An award-winning, best-selling novelist of over a dozen books, J. P. Barnaby is a proud member of the GLBT community both online and in her small town on the outskirts of Chicago. A member of Mensa, she is often described as brilliant but troubled, sweet but introverted and talented but deviant. She spends her days writing software and her nights writing erotica which is, of course, far more interesting. The spare time that she carves out between her career and her novels is spent reading about the concept of love, which, like some of her characters, she has never quite figured out for herself.

Gah! Where was the rest of the story?? I could have used another 100 pages!! I'll be honest, at first I didn't think I was going to like this one. The entire first chapter I kept thinking that Andy was a complete douche nozzle. My opinion changed once we got to know more of his past and his struggles. Andy is an ex-Marine that watched his best friend/lover get blown up by a roadside IED. After four years of one-night stands and gym hookups, he meets Stefan at the club where he dances. I enjoyed them together and want more of their story!! I hope we see them in future installments of this series.

Andy is a big and strong ex-marine who dances to support himself while he dreams of earning more by breaking into porn. Broken and sad and only existing, not living his life. He wasn't an easy character to like, not until his story came to light and his interactions with Stefan, showed him for the man he truly is inside.

This is a story of how one man sees himself a monster..."He should save this boy from the darkness in him." and of the quiet man who shows him that there is hope.

This is a short story - short but sexy with a nice message - and I always have a soft spot for a broken man getting his second chance.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

This story wasn’t nearly long enough! I wanted so much more but feel like I only got the appetizer. Andy is a former marine with quite a few issues. He is dancing and hoping to make it into porn in order to pay the bills. He appears to be surrounded by other former marines who all share the same understanding of what each other has been and is still going through. He goes to work one night, hoping to catch the eye of a porn producer, but he doesn’t count on meeting Stefan.

Stefan is a really sweet college guy who has been a bit mesmerized by Andy. But, he sees right through Andy’s façade. He sees the trouble and loneliness and wants to learn more about the causes of it. When circumstances cause Andy to lose his temper and his job, Stefan is there standing by his side.

We learn a bit about Andy and his struggles, most involving his time in the military, but it felt like it only scratched the surface. Unfortunately, we really don’t get to learn too much about Stefan. As I said at the beginning, this really felt like an appetizer. What we do get is well written and interesting, but I really wish this was more of a full story.

I really enjoyed this addition to the Working Boys series and this is just that bit better than Charlie, Rentboy Always good for me when each one gets a little better in a series. The e-book is a hybrid between erotica and romance, so I call it romantica. Sexy, interesting and well drawn in the page count given. I liked the characters, I could definitely go for more on this pair. NSFW review http://ontopdownunderbookreviews.com/...

I greatly did not like Andy in this one. He was obnoxiously cocky, and he really needed to get over himself. I know he clearly had issues due to his traumatic past in the Marines, but that didn't excuse his behavior for me. I'm glad he opened up to Stefan, so we got to know him a little, but I feel like I don't know anything about Stefan, so I couldn't see them as a couple, and I didn't feel any chemistry between them. The ending was kind of abrupt too even though I know this was a short story.

I read and really enjoyed Charlie, Rentboy the first book in the ‘Working Boys’ series so I knew I wanted to read the next book too. They are standalone books though.
Andy is an ex-Marine, making his living as a go-go dancer and trying to break in to porn films.
Not only because he likes no-strings attached sex, but he also wants to be able to pay rent and eat too.
Now the first part of this books shows Andy in a very poor light. He comes across as an arrogant superficial asshat.
But when he sees Stefan his walls start to crumble and then we get more of his history and understand what his troubles really are. He redeems himself or maybe more accurately reveals himself.
“How can you be so beautiful and hate yourself so much?”
Stefan doesn’t get enough page time, I really wanted more of him and I would have loved to see Andy’s future. I loved this story and just wanted more of everything.

I received my copy from the author for an honest review.

They say size isn’t everything and this story certainly confirms the truth in that statement. This may not be a very long novella but it sure packs a punch. And the same can be said for our main character.

Andy Finnegan is one angry and closed off hulk of a man. Ever since he left the Marines, Andy has kept his distance from others. He keeps his body in shape and does his job as a dancer in a gay club. Any hook up with another man is short, a one-off and completely on his terms. Determined to never be vulnerable again, Andy has his future planned. He wants to become a porn star. It’s the easiest way to make the money he needs and have the casual sexual encounters he craves. Tonight is the night. A porn producer will be in the club to watch him dance. If Andy plays his cards right, he might end up with exactly what he wants.

Two men seem determined to put a spanner in the works. The first is a former Marine buddy who can’t believe Andy has ended up where he did and offers him a ‘proper’ job. The other is a young man with dark hair. A young man who reminds him of somebody he has lost. A young man named Stefan who should be afraid of Andy and run away but does the opposite and stays, even after the Marine has shown him his worst.

Like I stated above, this is one short but powerful novella. When the story started I wasn’t sure I would be able to like Andy or even connect to him as a character. He came across as selfish, rough and mean. It is only as the story unfolds and we learn more about Andy, his past and his present that my feelings towards him started changing. By the time the story was over I had done a turn-around and developed a soft spot for this man who had only done what he felt he needed to do in order to keep his feelings locked up, deep inside, where he didn’t need to deal with them.

Stefan is just a sweetheart. Not nearly as well developed as Andy’s character he does manage to play a pivotal role in this story.

“How can you be so beautiful and hate yourself so much?”

I have a thing about stories in which the strong, seemingly untouchable man finds his redemption in the eyes and arms of someone who appears to be much weaker but turns out to have the ability to see beyond the obvious and the inner strength to persevere where stronger men would crumble.

This was a well written, hot and ultimately sweet story. It is also a clear indication that I’ve once again managed to find myself an author I need to further investigate. I seriously need more hours in my days.

I almost cried when the book ended, because damn - it was so good, but at least a couple dosen pages maybe? Just to see how Andy and Stefan are doing together and how Andy's new job prospect panned out?
Still loved this story, though!

My Review:
This is the second book in the working boys series. I read book #1 and expected more of the same type of in-depth story. This one (and book #3) didn't quite live up to that level of depth, but it was an interesting story.

Andy is a burly, beefy go-go dancer. He's a former marine suffering from PTSD after his lover died alongside him in Afghanistan. He's barely making it as a dancer and is hoping to break into porn...where the good money is. He has his shot the night that Stefan catches his eye in the club. Stefan is distracting in that he looks like Andy's dead lover, something he was already having an issue with on this night with flashbacks.

The story is very short. It covers a very short amount in time and I wish that it had gone on a bit longer so that there was more than just the happily for now ending. But what was there was entertaining for an hour's read.

I do have to say though that the big burly marine persona of Andy just doesn't fit my idea of a go-go dancer. When I imagine go-go dancer, I think twink or lean, not burly. I could be totally wrong here because let's face it I'm a hetero woman not a gay man hitting up the clubs, but it just seemed slightly off... although I could totally see him as a porn bear.

And speaking of visuals...can we take a moment to ogle that cover? Gor.Geous!!

This book was really too short. I would love to read a longer expanded version to see Andy's back story and see if he had a future with Stefan.

Andy Finnegan, of 'Andy, Go-Go Boy' by JP Barnaby, pushes himself harder than any man should to keep in shape for his job as a dancer in a gay bar and also to try to exorcise the demons that invade his mind. Andy is gorgeous to look at, but, inside, he feels empty and disillusioned; life has let him down. Everything he's ever had has turned to dust, so he has simply stopped trying. Andy lets nothing or nobody inside. He thinks he's safe in his self-imposed prison, until he meets Stefan, who stops him in his tracks and makes his plans to be a porn star seem a lot less important.

Andy has a huge chip on his shoulder and a temper to match it. He was discharged from the Marines, but they couldn't erase the hellish experience serving gave him. Eight years later, he's still having nightmares, flashbacks, and mourning his dead lover's passing. The Marines didn't prepare him for a life outside the Corps. All the Marines taught him was how to kill; not a real useful skill to put on his resume. With his opportunities so limited, he feels that his body is all he has going for him; so that's what he uses. Being a dancer isn’t too bad, but Andy knows he can’t do it forever. Going into porn was an option, but isn't something he particularly aspired to be, just an opportunity to make more money. He feels pretty much dead inside until a young man named Stefan catches his eye. Meeting Stefan is the first thing that engenders any hope for years and Andy is determined to explore it. When a bad situation arises at the club, most people would have run, but Stefan stays with him, even taking him home to care for him afterward. Andy is astounded that even though Stefan is scared, he doesn't abandon him like everyone else. Andy respects Stefan even more than before. He knows that this man is worth his trust and admiration.

Stefan had been coming every week to watch Andy dance; hoping to meet him, but too shy to make it happen. Stefan can see beyond Andy's beautiful body and into his sadness. Yes, he wants sex with him, but Stefan wants to get closer to Andy in order to understand how someone so handsome, who seems to be enjoying his job, could look so sad and lonely. He wants to listen to this man who is being torn apart, hoping that if Andy can get it out once and for all, he'd begin to heal. Even when he sees Andy at his worst, Stefan, although frightened, stands by him and even helps him go home. Stefan wants all of Andy, the good and the bad. When they do get together, the sex is unbelievably hot, but it is more. Stefan and Andy make love. They bonded rapidly and thoroughly. Stefan helps Andy see that, if they try, their lives will get better.

At first, this story seemed like it's was going to be a crude and gritty portrayal of an angry, bitter, dangerous man; but then it morphed into a touching love story which took Andy's locked tight heart and gave Stefan the key to their future. Well done, J.P.! I recommend this story to anyone who wants to read a different, but intense love story, with a touching ending. Sometimes, love is all you need.

A short (44ish page) story that is told from the perspective of Andy: a gym-rat ex-marine struggling to survive as a Go-Go Boy while waiting for the next break, his launch into the porn industry. Andy is callous, arrogant, selfish and oh so broken, with a hair-trigger temper and an internal dialogue that is all about locking away emotions and feelings to maintain his veneer of control.

It isn’t until we start to see Andy’s iron-gripped control on his emotions isn’t as infallible as he thought, and his real feelings of inadequacy and his low self-image starts to peek through that he becomes little more than a stereotype of all things bad.

An innocent question and a face that resembles the one that haunts his dreams start to fuel a fluttering hope, until his rage takes over and he loses control and his job with two punches. But, Stefan: curious, inquisitive and enamored engineering student doesn’t run: he’s watched Andy for months, seen potential and wants to see more.

And, like Stefan: I wanted more: more of their relationship as it starts to develop, more from Andy’s changes and learning to come to grips with his PTSD, anger and even his own low self-esteem. There is hope for Andy, it was apparent in two very different scenes: his encounter in the gym’s sauna with a near nameless and faceless man as another ‘watched the door’ more focused on Andy’s control and technique, and the first kiss with Stefan, and the emotions that ran through his head, the hope, the promise. And with Stefan, his emotions nearly consumed him, his ‘need’ to be in control warring with the trust, desire and lack of fear or rejection that Stefan showed: a whole new experience for him.

While this is the second in the series, Charlie (from the first book) does pop up for a cameo appearance, before Andy starts to see hope in something different. I did want to see more here: it is to the author’s credit that she took a character with so many difficult to like qualities, and had me, at the end, wondering if he does continue to grow and learn to trust.

I received an eBook copy from the publisher for purpose of honest review for The Jeep Diva. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Ohhh… Andy is a naughty boy at the gym! What a great start to a book. Hot sauna sex. Andy is beautiful, strong, athletic and confident! A former Marine, he seems to be floundering a bit looking for something to focus on. He starts out feeling very superficial, worrying about his looks, dancing in a gay club, and hoping to go in to porn. But underneath that is a damaged, scared man. Having served eight years as a Marine, he’s seen things no one should see, and survived to live with his memories.

His luck is about to change one night at the club he dances in, but not in the way he thinks. He’s hoping to be seen by the owner of a porn studio, and get his big break. Fate steps in, he sees Stefan, and that is all she wrote!

So this is a very good story, but waaaay to short! Just about the time I was getting in to Andy, and thinking he wasn’t the superficial jerk he appeared to be at the beginning, it’s over. We don’t get to know Stefan at all, other than that he has been stalking Andy for a month, he’s a student, and he’s small but fit. I liked what we did get, he seemed very sweet, but it was hard to really get in to him with so little to go on. They both seem like potentially really good characters, and I wanted more about them. We do get to know Andy and his issues, JP writes damaged characters so well, and Andy is certainly damaged.

The writing is great, as I would expect from a book written by JP, she has truly become one of my favorite authors in the genre. Strong characters, good plots, and hot sex. I mostly saw that here, at least with Andy, he is strong and damaged, the plot was basic but good, and the bit of sex was very yummy. I’d give this book more stars, but after recently rereading Aaron and then Spencer, which were truly five star books, I’m going to go with four stars here. Not because anything was wrong with it, I liked it very much, but it didn’t have the depth I’m used to seeing from JP. It was a very good book, in what will likely be a great series of books.

Short, Sexy and Steamy... my three favorite colors!

Andy is a former marine turned male stripper who has set his sights on the gay porn industry. The only thing he has to show for his time in the military are memories, some good and some not so good, and a severe anger management issue. On the night a hot shot from one of the biggest gay porn studios comes to see Andy dance, he loses his temper, job and dreams all in one fail swoop. But the lithe, sexy little half Italian he wakes up to the next morning just might make it all okay.

Stefan has been coming to the club to watch Andy dance for weeks now, but Andy hasn’t really noticed him until tonight. They dance, they kiss and they share an insane attraction. Is Stefan the guy to make Andy forget about everything that is wrong in his life and focus on something good for a change?

I loved this little novella. I felt very connected with Andy, what he lost in the military and how he feels worthless in his life now. There wasn’t a lot of story for Stefan, other than him seemingly having this instantaneous connection with Andy, enough to make Andy question where he wants his life to go going forward. Just the right mix of an intriguing storyline and some steamy guy on guy action to make this a fun, fast read!

I love JP Barnaby. She is a fantastic writer, with real, three-dimensional characters, believable situations, and hot sex. ☺
I really enjoyed Working Boys 1 and was looking forward to Working Boys 2 very much.

The story is very good. Andy is a complex character and intriguing. Stefan is a sweet and gentle soul, the perfect balm to Andy’s angst.

I totally get that an author needs to write the story she sees fit and that it needs to end where she feels it needs to end, but as the reader I really wanted this book to go on longer. I felt like I had just gotten to the meat of the story and suddenly *poof, it was over. In my perfect world I would have seen less of Andy with the stranger at the gym and more with Andy and Stefan, building their relationship.

This didn’t stop me from enjoying the story, but it did leave me feeling unsatisfied. Maybe that was her intention ☺.

It is definitely a HFN story, which are not my favorite types of books, but I did get the feeling things would work out, eventually. I hope, like we saw in this book, we get a glimpse of Andy and Stefan in a Book 3. I really enjoyed that brief conversation with Charlie at the bar, gave me a warm fuzzy!

I give this book a 3.5 of 5 hearts because JP is such a gifted writer and the story is a good one, but it felt incomplete to me.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Andy, Go-Go Boy is the second of J.P. Barnaby’s Working Boys series, and Andy himself is really the primary focus of the book. We see him early on, strutting around the gym and engaging in some anonymous sex. But as the story continues, we learn that there is a lot more to him, that he has a difficult past that affects his temper and his opinions of himself. I liked the way Barnaby slowly gives us a sense of what is going on behind the scenes with Andy. I also think she does a great job showing the difference between the random gym hookup that means nothing to him, versus the much more intimate and personal sex his has with Stefan. We don’t get to know Stefan very well in this short story, but he is a likable guy and we get some nice sexual tension and connection between the two men.

4.5*

Andy, himself, is loosely based on a the public persona of real-life porn star, Ryan Rose (that is him on the drool-worthy cover). He is loud. He is brash. He is unapologetic. He is sexy as fuck. He is also vulnerable and sweet and in need of love. He is find his pleasure through hook-ups and dancing. He has aspirations of a porn career. He just wants to pay his bills.

For a 14,000 word novella, there is an amazing depth to Andy. He has a dark side that makes him feel unlovable, unredeemable. He has a fun loving side that just wants to get laid. He has a hidden side that just wants to be loved. The story is told in third person from Andy’s perspective. You feel like you are in his mind. You feel his ego. You feel his strength. You feel his pain.

Seriously where is the story, I missed it? I know this is a short story but really there is nothing to this. We get an intro to Andy, the dick that is way to full of himself. We get a little more detail into his past where it mitigates a little of his douche bag attitude but not nearly enough. A fight, a one night stand that is still there in the morning, and we're done. Even if you want an extreme case of intsa-love there still really isn't a story here. Stefan really is just a stick figure of a character that does nothing but not leave in the night. I turned the page expecting another chapter and get The End. This makes a decent first part of a book but it total skipped the middle and end.

Really liked Andy, Go-Go Boy. Really, REALLY, liked the cover.

Seriously though, these little rentboy books are great. I love the small glimpses of happiness the characters are finding. A story does not always need to have an HEA to make a good impact. In this case, Andy finds something out about himself while finding someone who has the potential to become very important to him.

I'm excited for the next one as I wonder if there will be a time when all of these characters make another major appearance in another book down the road. I'd like to know how things turn out for Andy.

This book was ok, I'm not a huge fan of shorter books. They just feel really rushed and usually I feel like a lot is left out. This is the story of Andy, ex marine and stripper. Hes miserable in his life but he's abut to get his big break into porn. Until he meets Stefan, and Stefan makes him feel things he hasn't for years. Its a good story, but it was rushed. I wish there had been more detail, but I realize theyre short books.

Synopsis: Andy wants to be a porn star, because that is where he thinks he will make his money. Instead, he dances for money, but has an audition one night. While he is dancing, he spots someone in the crowd and is instantly drawn to him.

What I liked: the premise.

What I didn't like: well, this seemed more like a snapshot of a movie, rather than the whole thing. There wasn't really any story to this at all.

I didn't like Andy at the beginning of the story but by the end of the story he'd grown on me. Stefan's a cutie although I'm not sure whether he's brave or way too trusting going with Andy after that scene at the club. I do wish the story had been longer though.

Perhaps if I had read this series before I read The Survivor Stories I would have enjoyed this more. I was so impressed by the stories in those books that I think I was expecting more than I got here.

It was a good book but I think my expectations affected my reading. It is worth reading but it is very short and not as developed as most of Ms. Barnaby's books.
