Welcome to my Goodreads page.

I'm very fortunate to live in a writer's paradise on one of the small northern Gulf Islands off the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The rugged beaches and towering fir and arbutus trees that surround me often end up in my stories. When I'm not pouring my imagination into my computer, I'm futzing in gardens, making a mess of the kitchen or hiking local trails. I write stories that entice you to believe the impossible and escape the everyday for a while. Enjoy the read!

I keep thinking that author JP McLean can't ramp up the action any farther, but this third novel in the series takes Emelynn on another wild ride, involving arson, kidnapping, and even a mass murder attempt. Emelynn also has some hot sex, this time with an unexpected partner that left me wondering if he will be back in the next book! Note to readers: although these books are standalone, it will be somewhat easier to follow Emelynn's progress if the series is read in order.

As a reader, I stay away from sequels, but J.P. McLean’s series The Gift pulled me in. When I first read the story of Emelynn Taylor, and the gift she receives, one that I wouldn’t mind having, I was hooked. But would I read on? I did and book three continues to deliver. What surprised me, is how skillful the author is in not only reminding me of what happened before, but also in how many balls she continues to throw in the air, keeping me guessing as to how it’ll all end. This story has all the elements of an engrossing thriller—dynamic characters, secrets, suspense, sex, violence, and a believable and likeable protagonist. A very enjoyable read!

Secret Sky #1 – This is my first read by this author and I like it. The story’s beginning was slow where the author tried to make a mystery of what happened to Emelynn. The story is interesting, but too wordy, needs editing. The storylines are good with good characters, several of which were likeable. The author does well with her descriptions, adding to the interest of the story. There is infrequent usage of vulgar language. Ms. McLean shows a complete disregard for the proper usage of God and expressions concerning God, which shows me an intolerance and prejudice against Christians. There are plenty of inoffensive expressions that will work in place of God. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing what a book is about before I read it. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 3.5*

Lover Betrayed (Companion Book or #1.5) – I recommend reading this book after Secret Sky since there are parts that explain some things that were not discussed in detail in SS. Of course, there will be redundancies, which I skipped. I found this book too wordy with a good viewpoint from him, but not really a need to read book. It is largely about him, his father and his brother. The event of her kidnapping is detailed. Again, the author shows her prejudice against Christians with her word choices. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing what a book is about before I read it. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*

Hidden Enemy #2 – I find this is a better book than the previous two I have read so far. This will be a hard review to write without turning it into a book report. This story picks up three months after Secret Sky ends. I like that there is so much going on with the old and new storylines. While there is a lot of intrigue, Emeline is evolving. She has growth and changes in her makeup making her a more developed person. There are some mysteries to add even more interest and intrigue to the good storylines, with a good blend of the old and present storylines. Although I keep a good reading pace with the first two books, I had a hard time putting the book down. Hopefully, the rest of the books will increase or keep pace with the continued growth in characters and storylines. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*

Burning Lies #3 – This book begins one month after Hidden Enemy ends. OK, I am not bored yet with reading this series. Each book gets better and has quite a few twists and turns that bring back old storylines to mesh with the present and future plots. There is plenty of intrigue, action and other interests to keep the reader immersed in the pages. While the beginning is a bit slow with the author’s usual way of adding mystery before diving into the story. Emelynn has a new job and it is rather interesting, but not without strife and bother. There is an overview and glossary as with the other books. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*

Lethal Waters #4 – This book begins three months after Burning Lies ends. I am still not bored with reading this series; they are a bit wordy and start off with the author’s style of trying to be mysterious. The pace always picks up and there is a good blending of all storylines; past, present and future. Ms. McLean does not disappoint, she adds plenty of intrigue, twists and vivid descriptions. I have a problem with writing reviews for series since I want to write a book report of why this addition was a good read, too. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing about a book before I read it, and there is a glossary. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*

Deadly Deception #5 – This book picks up where Lethal Waters stops. What an interesting series this has been and I only have one book remaining: Wings of Prey #6. I found this book interesting and intriguing. The characters still run the gamut and since this is a series, only the new ones appear. The rest come and go as the storylines require, which the author does a good job blending all the storylines from book one to present. While a bit wordy, the author does well with her storylines, characters and descriptions, and she keeps the pace moving. There is an overview, which I appreciate knowing about a book before I read it, and there is a glossary. I found several books of this series in Booksprout. 4*

Wings of Prey #6 – This book picks up about three weeks after Deadly Deception ends. I have enjoyed this series by Ms. McLean. All her books have been wordy and a tad slow from the start with her writing style of trying to create a mysterious beginning. Then the stories kick into gear and the pace never slows down. There are plenty of twists and kinks added to the storylines started with the first book and added on to with each addition. There may be a storyline that appeared in one book only to conclude or build upon the present or future storylines. The characters run the gamut and none stand out as particularly stupid, but have depths of their own. Ms. McLean does a wonderful job with her storytelling, placing the reader in the midst of everything, big and small. I like the originality of the subject, flying people with unique skills. The author takes common subject matter and makes them her own. There are no repeats of someone else’s work or a Hollywood product. Intrigue, deception, romance, vengeance, honor, mystery, love and hate; this series has it all. 4*

The Review

This was a truly captivating and entertaining read. The author always does such an incredible job of crafting a narrative that allows readers to pick up on the important plot points and themes found in previous entries of the series without it feeling like a full recap of the series overall. It felt natural and flowed smoothly, and allowed for the character’s evolution and the mystery unfolding within the narrative to come alive.

The evolution of these characters was so mesmerizing. Emelynn’s journey from the previous book sees her recovering both physically and mentally from the abduction and torture she endured at the hands of a madman and his team, and her story of confronting that trauma and learning to take back the power that had been lost during that harrowing time was so important both to the story and to the overall theme of the violence women face far too often in today’s world. The gripping way that readers are on the edge of their seats trying to understand who can be trusted and who cannot is what makes this story shine, as you spend most of the time trying to figure out if you should hate or love a character, (except Manse, who everyone just hates).

The Verdict

A powerful, engaging, and character-driven narrative, author J.P. McLean’s “Burning Lies” is a must-read novel! The paranormal/fantasy-driven thriller is the perfect next chapter in this ever-growing series, and the twists and turns the narrative takes not only enhance the growing mythos of the Fliers and those around them but Em’s own past and her connection to the family she’s lost over time.

Emelynn lives in her beautiful cottage on the edge of the ocean, the home of her parents before her father died. Her mother moves her to Toronto as a child, and when she is old enough Emelynn returns to her old home. It becomes her sanctuary, a place she truly loves.

Having been given a special gift when she was a child, Emelynn only learns how to use it when she has grown up.

The first two books explain her flying capabilities, and at the end of Hidden Enemy, Emelynn discovers she has another skill, one that she doesn’t know how to use. It’s called Ghosting, and it is the ability to make herself invisible.

Emelynn belongs to a ‘covey’, of people who are also fliers. Each area has its own group, and they are all governed by the highly skilled fliers called the Tribunal Novem, who also possess other special skills.

This is a group who are exceptional and are greatly feared by the coveys. Burning Lies is about a common enemy to both the fliers and the Tribunal. The latter want to bring Emelynn into their fold. Something that she doesn’t want because their methods are violent, as she experienced first hand. Plus their secrets and methods make them untrustworthy.

This fantasy story turns into a sharp-tailed thriller. The tension ramps up and doesn’t stop. Just when you think Emelynn, can breathe again, something else happens and there’s never a good time to put it down.

Trust and Jeopardy

This book certainly adds more twists and turns to Em’s tale. She's only just recovering from the attack in the last book when this one starts. So much happens in this book. Em doesn't know who to trust, and that is probably a good thing because trust and relationships (both between individuals and with a group) definitely seem to be shifting sands in this series. Much going on with the Tribunal and the Redeemers. This book feels darker than the other two; I would say it contains several layers of darkness. The entire world of the Fliers is in jeopardy on several fronts. This is a long book, but it is a fast-paced read. I found Em’s evolving relationships with Mason and James to be fascinating to follow. A little bit of lightness is present when Em becomes a part of her best friend's bridal party. A gripping and page-turning thriller, but you should definitely read the books in order to get a sense of the scope of this just-off-normal series.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Emelynn is tiring to recover physical, emotionally a spiritually from the attack of the psychopathy and the complete invasion of her mind by James. She knows now more about the ugliness of her gift and the dangers it draws. Her abilities come with a high price. Just as she is coping with the recent event a new and more dangerous one comes. Who can she trust and how can she protect those closet to her.

This is the third instalment in The Gift Legacy series and the books just seem to be getting better. The characters are absolutely wonderful and fully of personality, drawing you into their world and keeping you invested in the outcome. The narrative is well done and further supports the storyline and the characters development. It is an exciting book full of action, danger, Polk cal intrigue, adventure, surprises and suspense. It is a page turner and very hard to put down as you want to know what happens. This is a gifted writer who has written an amazing thriller.

Burning Lies is the third and final book in The Gift Legacy series is as mesmerizing as book1 “Secret Sky” and book 2 “Hidden Sky”. This fast-paced suspense thriller is well-written with a smooth flow from complex fears of deceit, and hidden agendas to loyalty and friendship. “Burning Lies” is an action-packed thriller that answers as many questions as it creates within its pages. Lines are blurred; friends are tested while Emelynn navigates her way through conspiracies and learning more about her gifts as she becomes more resilient, even as her unknown terror grows. J.P. McLean has given us a nail-biting suspense thriller with a touch of romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first to the last page!

Burning Lies (The Gift Legacy, #3)
by J.P. McLean
Review for Creative Edge Publicity.
The emotional ride of finding a connection to the wider world and loosing that which marks our memories.
Emelynn is on a quest to control not only the gift she got from Jolene, but also the history that she did not quite grasp. Going to her half brothers grave, seeing Jolene's world, and the family influence is only the beginning. Its Jolene's enemies that will be her greatest threat. The stories and lies of the family that caused Jolene to escape the safety of the Tribunal, but also put at risk her own life, her family's life and all whom held her dear. This book uncovers those stories in the most heart wrenching and violent manner. A dramatic chapter in the story.

This was the best of the three in my opinion, even though there was still an inordinate amount of the beginning used to recap what happened to this point. At the end, I’m more convinced that this trio would have made a much better YA series than adult, but there would have been much editing needed (to remove the soft-core porn littered throughout). The focus on something ‘other-worldly’ and isolated value within a select group of people would have made more sense. As an adult novel series, I found it weak in depth and significance as well as thematically, very simple. Also, as previously mentioned, the excessive use of ‘said’ distanced the character for the reader as well as the strange naming patterns, which did not make sense.

Still, I am glad I read it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the third instalment in JP McLean’s “The Gift” series. McLean’s world-building and characterisation is impeccable, and her imagery is fresh and memorable. This is a book that I picked up whenever I had a spare moment, and, as the story built to its climactic end, I literally sat on the edge of my seat with anticipation.

I am completely sold into the series at this point, and I’m eager to read the next book!

Emelynn learns the truth behind her powers. But that doesn't help much when someone within the community is trying to expose those with the gift. Things get tense, more dangerous, and Emelynn must face some of this alone. Can she save the inner circle of her covert community? This is book 3 of The Gift Legacy. Redemption is not necessarily 'redeemed'
Aaaah! If I have given 5 stars to book 1 and 2 of the "Gift" series, this one deserves at least 6 stars! Thinking back on especially book 2, maybe I should have given it 4 stars in order to be able to do justice to book 3. It is absolutely incredible. J.P. McLean has outdone herself - she has written a book that easily could become a bestseller - if there wouldn't be so many questions left open at the end that make you want to read the next installment. "Harry Potter" became famous, many movies held the audiences captive, the story of "The Gift" could do the same. Book 1, 'Awakening' woke me up to this genre, book 2 was a bit easier to put down while reading it but book 3? Impossible. It was with me day and night, my blood pressure went up, I had breathing problems and headaches because I couldn't but should have stopped reading. I couldn't even function at times. As a writer myself I can tell a story, but I can only tell the stories I have lived through, as horrible as they were. I do not have the imagination to write a totally fictional story that would feel as real as what J.P. McLean is doing. Do I have to give the plot away? No, I will not do that. I would recommend to anyone to read the books "Awakening" and "Revelation" first - before you read book 3 of the series, "Redemption". If you start with this one you'll go back and read the previous ones and then you'll definitely read book 3 again. I had started out with book 4, "Penance" -and that one got me to start at number one and now I am reading "Penance" again. It feels "new" because I now know so much more about the heroine "Emelynn". I am almost afraid that J.P. McLean is going on to write more titles for this series (book 5 comes out in fall 2016) because she keeps me from reading about 15 other books I have on my Kindle and Kobo or on the book shelf. I also 'blame' her books for keeping me from working and finishing my sequel to "We Don't Talk About That" that so many of my readers keep asking for. However, "The Gift" series was to me and is a gift to many readers wanting to escape an ordinary life. Since 'Emelynn' introduced me to 'ghosting' I have started to "see" ghosts pop up...sometimes in my side vision, sometimes I feel them behind me. When I turn around - I see nothing. But I know something is there... I must admit that I have had this sensation since I was a child always expecting something terrible and aware of it - but now it has become a daily occurrence.

This book reunites the readers with Emelynn Taylor – still recovering from her abduction by a dangerous psychopath. Her life should be back to normal - yet she is again in the line of fire.

With The Gift: Redemption, J. P. McLean has once again created a thrilling combination of mystery, paranormal, urban fantasy and a touch of romance. It is a compelling read centred on Emelynn, drawing you in as you learn more about James and Mason and their respective motives. J. P. McLean paints a clear picture of the main characters' mindsets while the story evolves. I was drawn close to Em and her story – again an invisible friend and ally. The characters are of sufficient depth, believable with their flaws and virtues. The story is a very nicely woven combination of several genres, has a wonderful flow; it was easy to get hooked.

This is a book for you if you like mysteries or paranormal romance with a very urban touch and believable characters, some strewn in steamy situations, and some violent events.

The stunning third book in The Gift Legacy series!

Highly recommended!
