El reto de la debutante

Rate this book

Lady Diana Malbury is a bluestocking & would rather solve another one of the late Earl of Chestwick’s word puzzles than entertain potential suitors for the Season. The old earl presents her with the highest-stake challenge yet. If she remains unwed for the Season, she can return to his estate next summer and solve the latest puzzle by way of his extensive library, her favourite place in England. There's only one fly in the ointment Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from the war a decorated hero but also wounded and angry. His estate is off-limits to everyone. But Diana doesn’t give up easily, and when she meets the earl after trespassing on his land—the two share a brief but soul-awakening kiss. Suddenly Diana and Randal are forced to rethink their solitary ambitions.
The start of a new series & we’re introduced to the Malbury siblings, who all have different talents. I loved both Randal & Diana, he’s the grumpy Beast who wants to be left alone & she's determined to solve the puzzle his father gave her. Their attraction sizzles from their first meeting & only grows. Poor Randal finds his peace totally disrupted by the Malbury siblings & their friends but when they all eventually leave he finds that he misses them especially Diana. A very well written delightful novel with strong characters & a well paced story. I look forward to the rest of the series

“An Earl Unmasked” by Rachel Ann Smith is the first book in her series, Ladies of Risk. Originally I was attracted to this story because of the gorgeous purple cover then when I read the blurb I was eager to read the story. The MCs are Lady Diana Malbury and Randal Wilson, the Earl of Chestwick, there are also several Malbury siblings and a few other nobleman introduced. This story is a fluff romance—nothing too deep or emotional throughout the story. I think the book could have been much better if the author had just dug a little deeper. This is my first book I have read by Rachel Ann Smith so I am not sure if all of her books are so emotionless but this story definitely fits that description.

So what happens in the story is exactly what the blurb states no surprises at all. Lady Diana Malbury is known for her charm and intelligence, why else would she rather solve another one of the late Earl of Chestwick’s word puzzles than entertain potential suitors for the Season? The old earl presents her with the highest-stake challenge yet…If she remains unwed for the Season, she can return to his estate next summer and solve the latest puzzle by way of his extensive library, her favorite place in England…

But Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from the war a decorated hero but also wounded and angry. His estate is off-limits to everyone. Why would the Beast of Chestwick allow the mindless fools of society to infiltrate his private world when he has greater things to worry about, like getting back to the war front.

But Diana doesn’t give up easily, and when she meets the earl after trespassing on his land—the two share a brief but soul-awakening kiss. Suddenly Diana and Randal are forced to rethink their solitary ambitions...love is a riddle that only two hearts can solve together.

*****
So there were SEVERAL opportunities during the story to expand the plot and allow for character growth, but for some reason the author didn’t do it. There was an instance where Randal was found outside either passed out or sleeping (that was never clarified) and Diana becomes wrought with worry about the Earl. Then a couple times Randal feels as if someone is watching him … but that never gets resolved either. There is instant love between Diana and Randal yet they hardly have any conversations or interactions in which to get to know each other. At one point (through several chapters) Randal and Diana’s sister Minerva are playing a chess game with the outcome either being Randal & Diana will wed OR Randal and Minerva will wed. 🥴 The original riddle that Diana is attempting to solve through much of the story, is never solved. Finally Randal insists on carrying Diana everywhere because she injured her ankle falling of his library’s ladder; additionally, Randal insisted Diana stay at his home for 3-days to recuperate — I just can’t with all the silliness thrown together in this book. Too many things were left hanging, the relationship between Randal & Diana was so unrealistic and progressed WAY too fast, and none of the characters have any growth. Don’t even get me started on the lack of chemistry & passion in the story. Almost nonexistent.

I was disappointed.

Randal Wilson, known as the Beast of Chestwick, was a legend on the battlefield. Now a decorated war hero, he is wounded and angry and struggling to adjust to life as an Earl. His estate is off-limits to everyone, and he wants solitude. That is until he meets Lady Diana Malbury.

Diana is the youngest of six siblings and known for her charm, intellect, and love of puzzles. Diana adored the previous Earl and loved spending time in his massive library solving the puzzles and challenges he created for her. Before his death, he challenged her to a puzzle that she could begin if she remained unmarried for the season. Upon the season’s conclusion, Diana returns unmarried, but instead of the elderly Earl, Diana finds Randal, and when she injures herself, she is forced to stay at the Earl’s home until she is healed. Can these opposites solve the old Earl’s puzzle? And how will they deal with their growing feelings for each other?.

Diana and Randal are great protagonists, and they have a wonderful opposites-attract romance. Both characters have interesting stories, and the way they grow closer and fall in love is positively swoon-worthy. From the moment they meet, you can feel the connection between them. The kisses, the stolen looks, the conversations, it’s all fantastic, and the sexual tension is on point.

Diana is intelligent and charming, and she has an infectious optimism and zest for life. Independent and strong, Diana has no desire to marry and lose her freedom. Randal has no desire to marry and bind himself to another either, though for very different reasons. He lives in seclusion and doesn’t have family and friends to support him. It’s interesting to see both characters slowly change their views about love, commitment, and more.

Not only is Randal’s peace and solitude completely destroyed by Diana, but her family and friends also invade his estate. I love these characters! They are fun and witty. and they have the best banter when they are all together. You can totally tell they are a tight-knit group. Diana has such strong and loyal people around her, which contrasts with Randal’s rather solitary existence. The group is chaotic and boisterous, and each character is dynamic and interesting. And I really want to learn more about Minerva and Drake! There is so much chemistry between them, and you can cut their sexual tension and animosity with a knife. I have a feeling their enemies-to-lovers romance is going to be amazing!

I would definitely recommend An Earl Unmasked to readers that enjoy fun and romantic historical romances with entertaining characters and a swoon-worthy love story.

This highly entertaining and well-written novel came to a conclusion far too soon. The meeting between Lady Diana Malbury and the Earl of Chestwick is a surprise to both of them. The grumpy Earl, referred to as the Beast of Chestwick, can terrify most subordinates and his enemies by one look at his face, but the Malbury family are another breed altogether. Rather than adhering to the signs posted on his property to keep out, Diana bargains with Randal to spend time in his library to afford her the opportunity to work through the puzzle given to her by the Earl's late father. Before the poor man realizes what has happened, he is hosting a house party with guests who further complicate his life. Before long, Randal is pulled into the dynamics of the unconventional Malbury family, and it is only after they all depart, leaving him in peace, does he realize just how much he needs them. The novel comes to a successful conclusion but opens the way for Diana's siblings to find their own way. I received a copy of this romance as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

An entertaining story that took off right from the start. Diana had been solving puzzles her neighbor had constructed, for a while. His last challenge is that if she does not marry for the season, she can come and get her last puzzle.

Being her first season, she was more interested in solving the puzzle than anything else. But she finds her neighbor has passed away and his heir Randal has come home from war to take up his duties as the new Earl.

As these two come together, sparks fly and challenges begin. But he has been wounded by the war and she is a free spirit is seems. Can these two find romance?

A quick easy ready that starts the first in this new series!

Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy of this book for preview. This is my freely given opinion.

OK, maybe I was getting a bit picky, but there were a few editing issues I found with the book that were a bit annoyingly distracting. Could be my lack of sleep from this week's snow, and working night shifts making me more tetchy... whatever - but minor things such as using "alluding" when the term "eluding" should have been used, "banns" rather than "bans", ."counter plane" rather than counterpane, and "discrete" rather than "discreet". Also, when someone is lying on his back, he is not prone, he is supine - and that was referenced twice. Having spent many months putting ventilated patients in either prone or supine positioning, that one rather stuck out to me. OK - minor pickys out of the way.

The Malbury's are obviously a family of quite observant, and intelligent members of the aristocracy. Lady Diana is the youngest daughter of 6 children, and all the girls are "out". She loves literature and literary puzzles and has a friendly relationship with her neighbour, the widowed Earl of Chestwick. He owns an impressive library that she loves, and he loves to give her puzzles to fathom out. He challenges her to a puzzle that she may solve, if she remains unwed after her Season. Unfortunately, he passes on before she returns, and the heir, his son, is an injured veteran of the wars, who is less than willing to allow anyone onto his property, let alone a precocious young deb out to solve a puzzle left by his sire.

I found the description rather beguiling. It led me to think that this was a Beauty and the Beast type of story and it did have elements of that. But I felt that it did not have the depth of story I was hoping for, and there were a number of contradictions. The new Earl of Chestwick posted his property and left instructions for intruders to be shot, not wanting to socialize and to hide. But while I understand Lady Diana had the run of the property previously and the staff seem to have a soft spot for her, the place became overrun by Malburys and Chestwick really did not put up too much of a fight. There were allusions to his hazel eyes and their myriad colours, which enthralled Diana, even from a portrait... that seemed to be a significant detail, that was interesting as his father had brown eyes and his wife had blue, and some mention was made of Randal not feeling like it was his home, etc... but that really came to naught as a plot detail. But come on - some basic Mendelian genetics? How about how Diana found the Earl - SUPINE on the path, when he went for a walk. There was the allusion to a possible attack... but then again, after his injuries, he was prone to dizzy spells... but if he was prone to dizzy spells, why did he go all caveman male, and pick up Diana and carry her everywhere. If he was so concerned about her well being, then why would he not be concerned about having a dizzy spell and dropping or crushing her?

Also, why did the two assholes that the sisters hated suddenly show up at Chestwicks, despite not appearing to have any acquaintance with him, and intrude and stay at his home. Why did he not just plain old eject him - after all they were rude enough to invade his home uninvited.

I did however like that the siblings, while a bit competitive, did have an interesting and dynamic relationship, and Chestwick did seem intrigued by it. I also liked how he seemed to appreciate the intelligence of the sisters, rather than look down upon them. I am intrigued by the relationship of Drake and Minerva and the future of that. I quite like the opening and the relationship between Diana and the elderly Earl of Chestwick; it did seem very affectionate and paternal, and it was interesting that as such, he seemed to be matchmaking from the grave and there may have been some hints of salaciousness in his remaining puzzle for her - which made him a rather interesting, quirky character I would have liked to have known better; too bad he died so early on :(

So while I was not wowed by this story, and found some aspects of it falling rather flat, or not well defined, I did enjoy some aspects of it. So probably a 2.75 stars out of 5, and a willingness to see where the future goes, because of some of the groundwork laid.

“Regardless of how things appear, you have the power to choose your future for yourself.”

First I would like to thank Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read an arc of this book. I am honored to have been given the chance to read it and give an honest review.

An Earl Unmasked is a story following Lady Diana Malbury who is known for her charm and intelligence and her love for riddles and word puzzles. Often she would spend her time at the library at Chestwick estate with the late Earl who would give her many riddles and puzzles to solve much to her delight. Before his death the Earl left Diana with one last puzzle, though she must refrain from marrying during the season in order for the chance to solve it. Determined to return to Chestwick estate and solve the puzzle left for her, Diana avoided any and all suitors. There is nothing more Diana would love to do than spend the summer in the Earl’s extensive library, her favorite place in England.

Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from the war a decorated hero though he remains haunted by what he had seen on the battlefield and what he left behind, thus leaving him to recover from his wound and angry. The moment he returns to Chestiwick estate he becomes very secluded and is determined to make his estate off-limits to any and all visitors. He returned from war with the moniker the Beast of Chestwick and he had a certain reputation to uphold as the Beast and the Beast would not allow the mindless fools of society to infiltrate his private lands.

While isolated within his estate Randal was more than eager to get back to the war front until he met Diana--a charming and intelligent young woman who somehow found her way into his library and stole his heart as quickly as she appeared. Suddenly both Diana and Randal are forced to rethink their solitary ambitions as love becomes an option.

This book was such a fun and fast read, I enjoyed every single moment of it! The author really brought the world to life and I was easily able to picture the characters and their surroundings, it really helped me to be able to slip into the story and both these character’s lives with ease. I was taken with both Randal and Diana from the first chapter, both of them were so interesting and complex and yet so clear in what they both truly wanted. I also enjoyed the author’s way with words, I loved how she described their feelings for one another and the little stolen looks when they thought the other wasn’t looking.

The romance between Randal and Diana was so quick and easy and very enjoyable! They had the best chemistry and I loved their ability to surprise one another and keep the other one guessing. It was clear from the start that they were the perfect match for one another. I also really loved the sibling dynamic between all the Malbury siblings, it was chaotic in that perfect sibling way. I loved how eager they were to defend one another and how quickly they came to their siblings' aid when needed. Despite everything the Malbury siblings were close knit and loyal to one another and you could really see the bonds between them all so clearly!

As a huge lover of historical romance this book was an absolute delight for me to read! This is a book I would highly recommend to other historical romance lovers, especially if you’re looking for a book that is so easily loveable and very engaging! I am very much looking forward to reading more books from this author!

I had mixed feelings about this story. I loved the interactions between the Malbury siblings and Lady Minerva in particular came across as a fascinating individual. However I felt that the plot had too many loose ends that were never addressed to warrant more than a 3* rating from me.

Randal and Diana are simply adorable! Having been left a riddle to solve by the late Earl of Chestwick, Diana has no choice but invade Chestwick Manor to find the answers. It is quickly apparent that the riddle is love, or more specifically leading to her becoming the Countess of Chestwick. His father knew that Diana was exactly what his son needed and left this world knowing that he had done all he could to lead them together. I loved the magnetic pull between these two, it is impossible not to see that they were made to for each other. The family bond of the Malbury’s was written so beautifully. Each sibling is devoted to each other’s happiness. The fun and loving nature of the family as a whole fills an emptiness within Randal and you can see how quickly he steps into his own brotherly role. His need to protect Diana’s sisters is charming. The story flows from start to finish with heart and family support. I found myself drawn to the story more with each passing page. I can not wait to see Minerva finally bring Drake up to scratch as I’m sure that will be an amazing tale.

I think my expectations were too high. From the description and the opening chapters, I was expecting a recluse, puzzles, intrigue and insane chemistry. Instead we got: confusion, manipulation, and doormats? The puzzles weren’t puzzling or even solved. The heroine was both insecure and bland. I really wanted more depth. The sex scene confused me slightly but will applaud the useage of 69. The hero was said to be disfigured. Huh? No one mentions it except him and his valet like once. Was he actually attacked or did he faint? Why did the hero go off to war? He wanted his secrets but beech I wanna know! I need more detail and depth.

Lady Diana Malbury has a passion for word puzzles.  A neighbor left her one to solve after her first London season.  Unfortunately before her return there is a new Earl living next-door.

Randal Wilson the Earl of Chestwick has spent years at war.  Injured and now the only surviving member of his family, he has a different duty to uphold.

This historical romance is a lighthearted read that I thoroughly enjoyed.  A slight beauty and the beast vibe.  Our hero however is anything but the beast he's called.

The Malbury siblings are all fascinating characters each with a different talent.  I look forward to meeting them again in the following books in this series.

Great fun.

The first in a series, this love story between Randal and Diana was lovely.

The pacing of 'The Earl Unmasked' was fantastic, it was quick and kept me engaged the entire read. Randal, Earl of Chestwick, and Lady Diana have an instant love, however, the burn is slow. The chemistry between Randal and Diana was palpable with quick glances and longing touches.

The supporting characters and their dynamic between everyone were phenomenal, the banter had me laughing throughout the entire book. Diana and her siblings have a knack for creating shenanigans at every corner, it was endearing seeing Randal be both riled up and flexible with every instance. I appreciated the subplots between the supporting characters and look forward to reading more of their stories.

Between the lovable characters, quick pacing, and smart writing I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley and DragonBlade Publishing for the ARC in return for an honest review, the privilege was mine.

Very enjoyable read. This is my first from this author and I am excited to read more. A great sunshine and grump story. I love puzzles as much as the next. Diana must solve a puzzle left for her. Randal wilson the grumpy new Earl after his father dies must take over everything even if he didn't want to. The last puzzle was not to be opened unless she was unmarried and not betrothed during the season. After Diana finally gains access to the library to help her with her puzzle she falls and hurts herself. She begins to fall for Randal does he feel the same as she does? Very fast paced and steamy book. Highly recommend. For sure a 4.25 star in my eyes. I look forward to continuing this series. Thank you Net Galley for the e-copy of this book. This book was a confusing mess. There are so many people entering the story that don't need to be there. I could hardly keep up with who was who. Also, I was bored with all of the chess playing. Why would any adult play a chess game for marriage? This story was to far fetched for me.

Lady Diana Malbury is known for her charm and intelligence, why else would she rather solve another one of the late Earl of Chestwick’s word puzzles than entertain potential suitors for the Season?

The old earl presents her with the highest-stake challenge yet…

If she remains unwed for the Season, she can return to his estate next summer and solve the latest puzzle by way of his extensive library, her favorite place in England…

But Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from the war a decorated hero but also wounded and angry. His estate is off-limits to everyone. Suddenly Diana and Randal are forced to rethink their solitary ambitions...love is a riddle that only two hearts can solve together.

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will they let doubts and others prevent them from a shared happiness….

I was very curious about this new series by the author, one which does not involve spy nor long trip or dangerous situation.
It was so with surprise I read it in one sitting, so eager I was about knowing how Diana and Randal would resolve their conundrum as none looked like ready to lose ground nor concede they felt something deeper than mere attraction toward the other.

This fun fast paced story introduce a whole new set of characters, each with their own talents and flaws. Diana is the youngest daughter, and while there are all more or less scholars, she lives by her books and solving riddles. Why she entertained the idea of failing her first season just to be able to address her neighbor’s last puzzle. Alas, with his passing, his heir prevents her from sorting the enigma.
Randal is seen as a cold aloof soldier, gifted for strategy but awkward among people. His return, wounded, does not alleviate his feeling to be an outsider. So he pushes everyone away, and no one is to disturb this rest.
Except the tenacious neighbor’s daughter who wants access to his library to get her answers about his late father’s last game.

They were so sweet together, and while their personalities differed, they also complemented one another, her smile for his seriousness, his orderly side for her chaos, his scheme for her impulsivity. Their main problem being they are clumsy at expressing their sentiments, making at time a muddle of things but they are also right in their heart and do not give up.
4.5 stars

This is a new-to-me author, and I was frankly confused by some of her choices in this book. Maybe it can be chalked up to deadline pressure and the desire to lay the groundwork for future entries in the series by introducing various family members/issues in this first entry?

Unfortunately, although the "wounded warrior" trope is one of my faves, the MC's aren't given much depth, and the plot has glaring holes I just couldn't ignore.

The book begins with the h being obsessed with the H's eye color in a painting, which got things off to a strange start (I honestly wondered if h was on the spectrum at certain points in the storyline. I'm not kidding). The H is then presented as a psychologically and physically scarred man still dealing with the repercussions of his wartime injuries. He stubbornly insists that intruders to his property be shot before he leaves for a walk on his estate. Abruptly, at the beginning of the next chapter, the h finds him lying on the ground, unconscious. When he comes to, he's almost affectionate toward her, his gruffness conveniently abating (along with any dizziness or side effects from the war). So, there's no real dramatic tension or conflict. For her part, the h remains literal and naive (I didn't much care for how she kept thinking of him as a beast) and she doesn't really have any conversations of depth with him. Their chemistry suffers as a result.

Unlike in normal "beauty and the beast" retellings, most of the storyline has to do with a cast of characters parading through H's home. I wasn't all that taken with any of h's family members, as they all seemed a bit smug and too aware of their intellect. The conversation the H has with h's brother early on is odd--it's almost as if he doesn't want to get to know H, he just wants to goad him. Dialog is stilted and choppy in other places throughout the book.

Then, there are errors that should have been caught in editing. Misspellings, incorrect word choices, the like. And the scene where h's brother, who has a vague medical background, examines her ankle and proclaims the ligaments torn, was just awkward. You don't need to wait 3 days to determine if ligament tearing has occurred, but healing takes many weeks (speaking from personal experience), and ligament tears often require a splint for proper healing. A doctor should have been called, at least. The H, who has helped injured men on the battlefield, doesn't question anything the brother says.

Finally, the plot holes:
--Was the H attacked at the beginning of the book, and if so, by whom? Why does he feel that he's in danger at times? He uses this as an excuse early on for why he doesn't want h at his house, but it isn't brought up again. Is he merely suffering from PTSD? This subplot is completely dropped.
--Was there supposed to be a solution to the riddles? Again, this mystery is never solved. Are we supposed to gather that the puzzles were just H's father's desire to get H and h together?
--Why do two men the women dislike just randomly appear in the H's home, and why doesn't he just kick them out?
--What the heck was the chess match about? Was Minerva just testing H? There seemed to be a subtle flirtation between her and him early on, and I couldn't figure out if the author was trying to set up a love triangle or not.

Overall: This has a good basic premise but needed a strong editor.

An Earl Unmasked by Rachel Ann Smith is written by a new-to-me author and is the first in a new series called Ladies at Risk. Diana had become friends with the elderly Earl of Chestwick over the past two summers. Their love of literature and puzzles drew them together. At the end of a summer, the Earl gave her a sealed puzzle with the instruction to work on it next summer if she came back unbetrothed or unmarried. When she asked him what she should do if she were betrothed or married, he answered, "Burn it." Well, she was back, not betrothed, not married and anxious to sole the puzzle. The new earl, the son of the late earl, was home, wounded, and not wanting any visitors. That did not stop Diana, who believed she could sneak in and he would never know. Things didn't work out quite as she planned.

This was a very cute, and complicated, story, all about three sisters and two brothers who were not at all alike, but had managed to mold a working relationship amongst them. Diana loved the library, and loved the manor house for that reason. Her older sister, Minerva was shrewd and devious and had vowed not to marry until she met a man who could beat her at chess. Her mother was not happy. One of her brothers was a physician and the other, the heir. Randal was the newly minted Earl of Chestwick and planned to marry, but marry a stranger, in a marriage of convenience, rather than become involved. He needed an heir. The staff at the manor all loved Diana. Randal, not so much. They thought he needed her. There was plenty of plotting going on, and not all by Minerva. The plot was not a deep one, but it was satisfying. The characters were entertaining. The setting was marvelous. All in all, it was a decent book. Looking forward to more.

An Earl Unmasked is a cute story with no real conflicts in spite of what the description and early chapters suggest. The basic premise is the Beauty and the Beast trope, and Diana somewhat fits the bill: She's sweet and lovely, loves to read, and has a propensity for visiting a house she isn't invited to. Randal, however, makes a terrible Beast. True, he has scars, but it's also true that his scars are rarely mentioned and hardly grotesque. True, he posts "no trespassing" signs, yet he never once attempts to toss someone off his property, even the ones that deserve it. From the beginning, he's clearly presented as a softie with an immediate and honorable interest in Diana. An interest that Diana returns.

So pretty much from the first, the two are adorable together, and, essentially, they are willing victims of instalove. Randal has no family to encourage or discourage a match; Diana's brothers and sisters--a brilliant and somewhat chaotic menagerie--pretty much consider a match a done deal. A fair amount of the story is dedicated to setting up their novels.

A few plot points are presented that never pan out. Diana ostensibly comes to Randal's estate to solve a puzzle that Randal's father left for her. The two pursue and solve a handful of clues, but there is never a grand discovery. Also, when Diana first comes across Randal supine and seemingly unconscious, he awakens and states that someone attacked him. He also admits that he still suffers from dizzy spells from his war injury. However, that's the last we hear about either issue.

To be fair, I enjoyed this story and rooted for their HEA. But it wasn't a story that pulled me in and kept me reading into the night.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher, via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

After promising the old Earl of Chestwick that she would return from her first season unmarried, ready to solve the riddle he left her, Lady Diana Malbury is ready to seek out the clues in his library. However, the late Earl's son, Randal, has newly inherited the title, and has no intention of letting a debutante invade his privacy. Diana does not give up easily, and though Randal does just about everything to turn her away, neither can deny the urge to be together.

I honestly could not remember anything about this book when I decided to check by kindle TBR, and saw that I had this trilogy to read. Thinking it was probably easiest to go in blind, I started An Earl Unmasked and was drawn to Diana's story instantly. The youngest daughter of an Earl, Diana is about to embark on her debut season, but would rather be with her family, and her neighbour the Earl of Chestwick, than in a London ballroom. Her elder sisters are yet to marry, and she promised the earl she would return to solve his riddle. The relationship between Diana and the old earl was lovely, and I know he fully intended for her and Randal to meet and fall in love. Randal returned from the battlefield on the death of his father, and his injuries mean he wants solitude and to not be disturbed, particularly not by a bluestocking such as Diana. He orders that anyone on his land is to be shot on sight, and the house to be shut up, but Diana is tenacious, and when she comes across him on the estate injured, she won't stop returning. I enjoyed the way Diana and Randal grew on each other, and how they started by respecting the other's mind, and then acting on their feelings. The added plot line of Minerva's plan to only marry whoever bests her at chess has definitely set the series up for a fun tale, and the extended Malbury clan are a family I hope we see more of in the sequels.

Ms. Smith is one of my favorite authors and I was excited to start this new series of hers. This is the first installment of her new Ladies of Risk series and it is off to a splendid start! Lady Diana has no interest in suitors or society. Being a true bluestocking, her idea of a good time is solving one of the late Earl of Chestwick's word puzzles. Before his passing, the Earl's last challenge to her was that if she did not marry this Season she could come to the estate and solve the latest puzzle by way of his most impressive library. However when Randall, the new Earl, returns from the war, he doesn't allow anyone to intrude on his property. A decorated war hero, he is wounded and angry and wants nothing more than to be left alone. But Diana is not discouraged and before the grumpy Earl realizes what has happened, he is hosting a house party. Sparks undoubtedly fly between these two and it is not until Diana and her family leave, that he realizes how much he wants and needs her. This was a very entertaining and enjoyable story that captured my interest right from the start and kept it all the way through. A well-written story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Looking forward to the next installment!

The spoiler-free summary: After bonding with her elderly neighbor with riddles Lady Diana receives one last riddle from the late Earl of Chestwick. If she remains unwed she can solve the last puzzle he ever created. But Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from the war a decorated hero but also wounded and angry. His estate is off-limits to everyone. When she meets the earl after trespassing on his land she must convince him to let her solve this puzzle.

All the things I loved:

The pace- It's fun and fast! I finished it in one sitting.
I love it when someone has their world turned upside down and Diana definitely turned Randal's life upside down.
The families- Her charming family provides love and support and his father makes sure his son goes happily ever after he deserves.

The things I didn't love:

The beginning was sort of strange. They began to have an unusual public display of affection after about an hour of meeting. Which is strange in 2020 but very strange in England at the time.
The heroine is a bit of a ninny. Who the heck falls from a ladder twice?

I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.

Diana loves puzzles and is extremely good at them. She spends several months with Randals father and basically made a promise not to marry during the season and she would have an even bigger puzzle to solve!
Randal returns home after his father passes and attempts to take up the reins of managing an Earldom! He issues strict edicts to keep people away!
The staff are used to Lady Diana and let’s her in. Diana and Randal have odd chemistry to me!?
There is a scene where he lies injured and no more mention of it or how it came to be???
There are some steamy kisses and after Diana is injured Randal uses every excuse to carry her everywhere!
Minerva is Diana sister and has issued her own odd ultimatum that has you on pins and needles awaiting the outcome! That alone is worth the 4 stars.
Diana does issue a surprise at least a couple of her own that are nice but there is almost no interaction for 2 weeks before the surprise yes steamy ending?
Do they make a great couple? Yes. Is the HEA dreamy and sweet nope but it will make you think!
I did like how Diana points out her brothers behavior when he mentions hers!!

The old Earl of Chestwick, presents Lady Diana Malbury with a challenge before he dies. If she remains unwed for the Season, she can return to his estate next summer and solve the latest puzzle by way of his extensive library. Yet upon his death, she finds herself facing his son, Randal Wilson, who has returned from the war a decorated hero but also wounded and angry. Randal is determined to ensure that his estate is off-limits to everyone yet finds himself, facing a greater battle when Diana forcing her way into his privacy.
The first book in the season, introduces Diana and her sisters, who all appear to be avoiding marriage. Diana is so refreshing and determined in her manner, that Randal is not quite aware of what he is doing when he is with her. Both Randal and Diana were entertaining to read about, with Randal and his grumpy manner and Diana, doing all that she can to entwine herself into his life. An entertaining read, all bundled into a well-paced storyline.

Lady Diana Malbury
Randal Wilson, Earl of Chestwick

Lady Diana Malbury is known for her intelligence and charm, but she also loves puzzles. The late Earl of Chestwick left her with the highest stake challenge yet, if she remains unwed for the season and returns to his estate next summer to use his extensive library to solve the puzzle. Randal Wilson, the new Earl of Chestwick, has returned from war a decorated hero and has put his estate off limits to everyone so he can concentrate on healing and going back to the front. Lady Diana doesn’t give up easily and she meets the Earl after trespassing on his land, the two share a brief but soul-awakening kiss. Now The Earl and Lady Diana must solve another type of puzzle, love. This is a very good, fast reading book. I really liked both Randal and Diana. Diana brought Randal out of his shell and helped him heal. She gave him happiness and laughter. Randal gave Diana the power of being able to have a say in her future. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series.

I did enjoy this book. This is the first book I have read by this author and i look forward to the next book in the series.
Diana has been visiting her elderly neighbor who gives her riddles to solve. He offers her 1 more riddle if she doesn't not wed during her first season.
With the passing of his father, Randal has returned for the war to take up his new title. When Diana invades his lands, he is flabbergasted.
And so her entire family swarms his home.
Almost the entire book takes place over 3 days so there is definitely instalove which i usually hate but I didn't mind it so much in this book.
Randal and Diana were a cute couple even if there wasn't much conflict.
To be honest I think I was much more interested in Diana's older sister Minerva who has vowed to marry the man who beats her in chess even though she loves her childhood friend Drake.

Not a bad story but not much to it either. This author is new for me and her writing was good, storyline was an interesting premise but the execution fell a bit flat.
Beauty and the Beast is the troupe here, and Randal certainly fills the beast role and wants to be left alone. Diana intrudes on him and its insta-love. The rest of the book really is trying to start several stories, presumably for the series, but it just doesn't work well, it left the reader with more questions and unanswered things that happened. Like the clues Diana's father left for her that really go nowhere. So this book is mainly, Diana and Randal's love affair which in itself is really cute and sweet. But there is nothing to conquer or overcome and the characters are kinda flat. Overall I was disappointed in how it turned out and it doesn't make me want to read more. Still, I gave it 3 stars for a short sweet love story but that's about it.
