మూగవాని పిల్లనగ్రోవి [Moogavani Pillanangrovi]
Moogavani Pillanagrovi (1993) is woven around the near-suicidal death of a farmer who loses his land. While the period of the plot is around the 1950s, the story revolves around the farmer's ties with his land and his inability to visualize a life without it-an issue relevant even today. The farmer's death could have been forgotten by the village, except for several puzzling incidents that crop up. Myth and reality intertwine to create a folklore around the land and the farmer.
This Telugu novella was first published in 1993, during a period when Andhra Pradesh's farmers had begun committing suicide in droves. Many surprising parallels can be drawn to the pressures in agriculture and the farmer in real life and in the novel. This novella introduced what is called (in Telugu literary criticism) as magic realism-mirroring real life and yet making wide departures into the world of lore, mythic representation, and strongly rooted cultural beliefs. Kesava Reddy writes with a strong inflection of his native Rayalaseema dialect. Breaking the tradition of writing in the standard Telugu form as it is spoken and written by people from the coastal districts of Krishna and Guntur, Kesava Reddy along with several other writers began writing in his native dialect-a bold step at that time. The detail in the novel is striking. Kesava Reddy also broke with Telugu literature (which was didactic at that time) to build on detail and cut down on dialogue. His dialogues are sparse and never interfere with the tempo built up in the story.

In his writings, he addresses many of the important social problems in India like poverty, prejudices, and superstitions, and encourages people to be socially responsible. He successfully bridges the idealistic and popular styles of literature.
Kesava Reddy was born in Thalapula Palli, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh to Ranga Reddy P, a farmer. He did his early education at S.V University, Tirupathi. He obtained his MBBS degree from Pondicherry University, and his pg diploma in dermatology in CMC medical college, Vellore. Reddy worked as a medical officer in Victoria Hospital, Dichpally, Nizamabad. He later retired and settled in Nizamabad town.

నిన్న రాత్రి నిద్ర పట్టక , ఈ పుస్తకం చదవడం మొదలుపెట్టా. ఒక గంటలో అయిపోయింది. Short and Brilliant.
చిత్తూరు కడప రాష్ట్ర రహదారి మీద ఒంటిల్లు అనే ఐదొందల గడపలుండే గ్రామం ఉంది. ఊరికి తూర్పున పర్వత పంక్తి ఉంది కనుక మిగిలిన మూడు దిక్కుల నుండి ఊళ్ళోకి దారి ఉంది. ఉత్తరం దిక్కు నుంచి వస్తే చెరువు కట్ట మీద ఉన్న సినమ్మ గుడి ఒక వింత , దక్షిణం నుంచి వస్తే ఊరి మొగుదాల ఉండి పూజలందుకునే గుండు రాయి ఒక వింత. పడమట దిక్కు నుండి వస్తే రోడ్డు పక్కన ఒక దట్టమైన చిట్టడవి ఒక వింత. అసలు అక్కడ అడివి ఎలా వచ్చింది అనేదే అసలు కథ, రైతు బక్కిరెడ్డి కథ, మూగవాని పిల్లనగ్రోవి మూగపోయిన కథ.
పడమట వైపు నుండి గ్రామం లోకి ప్రవేశించే వాళ్ళు బక్కిరెడ్డి కానను సమీపించగానే తమకు తెలియకుండానే నెత్తి మీద తలపాగా తీసి వేస్తారు. తమకు తెలియకుండానే వాళ్ళ శిరస్సులు అవనతాలవుతాయి. ఈ నవల చదివిన పాఠకులకు కూడా ఆ బాటసారులు కి కలిగిన అనుభవమే కలుగుతుంది.తెలుగు భాష మాట్లాడే ప్రాంతం లో పుట్టి, తెలుగు భాష చదవడం వచ్చి, ఆ భాష లో నవలలు చదివిన వారికి మునుపెన్నడూ కలగని అనుభవం కేశవరెడ్డి నవలలు చదివితే కలుగుతుంది.
పద్నాలుగు ఎకరాల మాగాణి భూమి ఉన్న అగ్రకుల రైతు బక్కిరెడ్డి కథ ఇది. కథగా మొదలై గాధగా, పురాణ గాధగా ముగిసిన నవల ఇది. ఇందులో కుల వైరుధ్యం లేదు ఉన్నదల్లా వర్గ వైరుధ్యమే. అయినా వేలెత్తి చూపగల వర్గ శత్రువు లేడు. అప్పు కింద మణియం, భూములు జప్తు చేసుకున్నాక బక్కిరెడ్డి ఎదలో సుడులు తిరిగిన అంతర్మధనాన్ని పరిశీలిస్తే భూమికీ,రైతుకు మధ్య ఉన్న అన్యోన్యత ఎంత గాఢమైందో, ఆ ఎడబాటు రైతు అస్తిత్వాన్ని ఎంతగా కుంగదీస్తుందో తెలుస్తుంది.
P.S : ఇది చదివాక 'శ్మశానం దున్నేరు' by Dr.Keshav Reddy చదవండి. Its Raw, Violent and Realistic . వీలైతే ఈ రెండు నవలల్లో ముగింపు ని Analyze చేయండి.

A heart touching story of a framer told in its truest form. The real measure of a writer is how he can make the reader forget that he is reading a book. The reader should see,feel and live the story and forget that he is reading it. I think the writer here has succeeded in doing that.

In Ontillu, an arid rural region of Rayalaseema, there sprawls a forest-esque land on the western side of the village with trees spreading its eerie branches & boulders looking not less than mountains. This desolated land exuding its sinister existence, by glancing at it, one would recall a story narrated to them by their ancestors. Ask them whose story it is , they tell you without fumbling a bit with moist eyes, the story of Bakkireddy- a tale of agony & anguish.
This book written by Dr Kesava Reddy is an unapologetic account of state of mind of a farmer,Bakki Reddy who loses his land in a government auction. He, who recieves this land from his father as a part of family lineage is now reeling out of pathos left landless, abandoned like an orphan. This is not just a piece of land he had been farming for his livelihood but a promise of word, a pledge of protection & an oath of love that had been passed on to him as a progeny.
The author has done a brilliant job by encompassing Bakkireddy's stoic voices of sorrow reverberating his failure both as a farmer & a son and more than anything his immense endearing bond that was severed forever with his land. Bakkireddy keeps staring into oblivion for most of the time in the book contemplating his past, present & future. Not only with Bakkireddy's voice, the author made us listen the people of Ontillu glooming with fever of empathy witnessing the predicament of Bakkireddy.
This is for the first time I have read something about pathetic train of thoughts, a farmer undergoes with the deepest loss of his life ever with the prose very personal & intimate. This might be the reason it has been widely translated into English, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi, Assamese & Nepalese. Though the dialect used in the book is slightly difficult to catch up, the emotions with which the words are knotted together drenched me in the deluge of tears of Bakkireddy.
After reading this book, I was staring into nothingness for a couple of minutes co-relating this fictional story lying in my hand with the reality of farmers. Farmers like Bakkireddy are never inclined to labour others farms, never gives a thought to lease from others. They respect their land like their father, love like their mother, care & nurture like their children.
The mystical intrusion into the story is where I was left awestruck. The point where the title (Moogavani pillangrovi- means a dumb man's flute) starts getting justified is where magical realism takes charge of the book. Also the point where I started loving this book from merely liking it.

As always, Oxford novella series does not disappoint. A true gem of a story , a story etched in times immemorial.
How does it feel when a farmer loses his land to debt ?
Surely a man must be practical and look for other avenues.
For Bakkireddy, the fertile land is his family member. It’s gently growing saplings are his many sons , the water flowing through the canals is like the blood pulsing through his veins , the wells are his organs and so on ..
It seems analogies falls short for his endearment for the soil of the earth .. his birthright and his heritage ..
He wants to protect his land “ just like the eyelid protects the eye”.
Bakkireddy is rendered senseless with this loss. Suddenly his daily rituals and work schedule seem pointless - the watering , the ploughing , the digging.
It seems a blood bond has been snapped and everything else seems devoid of meaning..
On a stormy night, he lies buried by his own exhaustion and desperation in his own land..
A macabre spectre still farming his land with his plough and prod ..
The rest of the villagers are only spectators .. feeling and unfeeling in equal proportions to this tragedy.
In the introduction part, it seems the author seems to be Bakkireddy’s son himself and he’s here to write the story twenty nine years later. The translator says for this tragedy there’s only poetic justice to be delivered. Here the five elements of earth are called into notice
Many years later , another tragedy happens.
A veritable mix of lore and love come together to explain this. It seems the author also called the powers of the mythological texts like Ramayana and Mahabharata time to me leaving you in awe..
Read it for that ..
Balki Reddy’s thicket awaits your namaskara.

ప్రతీ ఊరికి ఒక చరిత్ర ఉంటాది. అది ముందుగా ఒక కథగా మొదలై, తర్వాత గాధగా, చివరిగా పురణంగా రూపాంతరం చెందుతాయి.. ఇలాంటి స్థల పురాణాలు ఎక్కువుగా రాయలసీమ ప్రాంతంలోనే ఉండటం గమనార్హం. అలా ఎందుకు ఉన్నాయో అనేది మనం తర్వాత విశ్లేషించాల్సిన విషయమైనా ప్రస్తుతానికి మనం ఒక ఊరు గాథని తెలుసుకొనే డా. కేశవరెడ్డి గారి " మూగవాని పిల్లనగోవి" ద్వారా ప్రయత్నం చేద్దాం..!!
ఒంటిల్లు అనే గ్రామంలో ఉంటున్న బక్కిరెడ్డి అనే 60ఏళ్ల రైతు కొన్ని అనుకోని కారణాలు వల్ల తనకి ఉన్న 16 ఎకరాల భూమిని అమ్మవాల్సి వచ్చింది.. ఆ తర్వాత బక్కిరెడ్డి కి ఏమైంది..!? తన సొంత భూమికి తర్వాత కాలంలో "బక్కిరెడ్డి కాన" అనే పేరు ఎలా వచ్చింది అనేది తెలుసుకోవాలి అంటే ఈ పుస్తకం తప్పకుండా చదవాల్సిందే.

ఈ కథలో ముఖ్యమైన ఆకర్షణ రచన అంతా రాయలసీమ గ్రామీణ మాండలికంలో ఉండటం.
కేశవ రెడ్డి గారి రచనలు పరిచయం చేసిన "" గారికి ధన్యవాదాలు.

ప్రతీ ఊరికి ఒక చరిత్ర ఉంటుంది. ఆ చరిత్రకు మొదటి మెట్టు ఒక కథ. ఒక కథగా మొదలై, తర్వాత గాధగా, చివరిగా పురణంగా రూపాంతరం చెంది చరిత్రగా నిలిచిపోతుంది.
అలానే ఈ పుస్తకంలో ఒంటిల్లు అనే ఐదొందల గడపలుండే ఒక ఊరు ఉంది. ఊరికి తూర్పువైపున పర్వత పంక్తి వుంది. కనుక మిగతా మూడువైపులు నుండి ఊరికి చేరుకునే దారి ఉంది. ఆ మూడువైపుల నుంచి వస్తే చిరో ఒక వింత కనిపిస్తాయి. దక్షిణం దిక్కు ఊరి మొగుదాల ఉండి పూజింపబడే గుండు రాయి కనిపిస్తుంది. ఉత్తరం దిక్కు చెరువు కట్ట మీద ఉన్న సినమ్మ గుడి కనిపిస్తుంది. పడమట దిక్కు రోడ్డు పక్కనే "బక్కిరెడ్డ��� కాన" అనే ఒక దట్టమైన చిట్టడవి కనిపిస్తుంది. అసలు అక్కడ అడివి ఎలా వచ్చింది, దాని పుట్టుపూర్వోత్తరాలేమిటి, అసలు ఆ అడవిని "బక్కిరెడ్డి కాన" అనే పేరు ఎలా వచ్చింది అనేదే ఈ పుస్తకంలోని కథ.
బక్కిరెడ్డి ఒక రైతు. ఒక సాధారణమైన రైతు. మట్టినే నమ్ముకున్న రైతు. అదే మట్టిలో కలిసిపోయిన రైతు. పుట్టుక నుంచి చావు వరకు తన జీవితంలో జరిగిన ఘట్టాలు సాధారమైనవే. అవి మట్టిని నమ్ముకున్న ప్రతీ రైతు జీవితంలో జరిగేవే. కానీ చదివే పాఠకుడికి అవి అసాధనమైన ఘట్టాలుగా అనిపిస్తాయి. దానికి కారణం కేశవ రెడ్డి గారి రచనాశైలి. కేశవ రెడ్డి గారు సృష్టించిన మాటలు, సన్నివేశాలు, వర్ణనలన్నీ కనిపించని భావాలన్నీ చూపిస్తాయి. చదివే పాఠకులకు రైతు దేహమైతే తాను దున్నే భూమి ఆత్మలా అనిపిస్తుంది. అదే భూమిని అమ్ముకున్నప్పుడు ఆత్మ నుంచి వేరైపోయిన దేహం పడిన క్షోభ కనిపిస్తుంది.
రైతు చావు రైతోక్కాడితే కాదు. ఆ చావుకి కారణాలు, ఆ చావు తర్వాతి పరిణామాలు ఆ రైతు చుట్టూవున్న ప్రతీ పాత్ర తాలూకు భావోద్వేగాల్ని ఎలా ప్రభావితం చేశాయో కేశవ రెడ్డి గారు చాల బాగా విశ్లేషించారు. కేశవరెడ్డి గారు రైతు చావు ఆత్మహత్య, ప్రాయోపవేశం మధ్య ఉండే గీతలో దాగివున్న రహస్యంలాగా చిత్రీకరించి, పాఠకుల ఊహలకు వదిలేసారు.
కథగా మొదలై, విషాద గాధగా మారి, ప్రజలు గుర్తుకుతెచ్చుకునే పురాణంగా మార్చేయడం కేశవ రెడ్డి గారికే సాధ్యం.
తెలుగు భాష మాట్లాడే ప్రాంతం లో పుట్టి, తెలుగు భాష చదవడం వచ్చి, ఆ భాష లో నవలలు చదివినవారు, తెలుగు పుస్తకాలు చదవాలి అనుకునే ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ ఈ నవల తప్పకుండా చదవాలి.
అలానే ఈ పుస్తకంలో ఒంటిల్లు అనే ఐదొందల గడపలుండే ఒక ఊరు ఉంది. ఊరికి తూర్పువైపున పర్వత పంక్తి వుంది. కనుక మిగతా మూడువైపులు నుండి ఊరికి చేరుకునే దారి ఉంది. ఆ మూడువైపుల నుంచి వస్తే చిరో ఒక వింత కనిపిస్తాయి. దక్షిణం దిక్కు ఊరి మొగుదాల ఉండి పూజింపబడే గుండు రాయి కనిపిస్తుంది. ఉత్తరం దిక్కు చెరువు కట్ట మీద ఉన్న సినమ్మ గుడి కనిపిస్తుంది. పడమట దిక్కు రోడ్డు పక్కనే "బక్కిరెడ్డ��� కాన" అనే ఒక దట్టమైన చిట్టడవి కనిపిస్తుంది. అసలు అక్కడ అడివి ఎలా వచ్చింది, దాని పుట్టుపూర్వోత్తరాలేమిటి, అసలు ఆ అడవిని "బక్కిరెడ్డి కాన" అనే పేరు ఎలా వచ్చింది అనేదే ఈ పుస్తకంలోని కథ.
బక్కిరెడ్డి ఒక రైతు. ఒక సాధారణమైన రైతు. మట్టినే నమ్ముకున్న రైతు. అదే మట్టిలో కలిసిపోయిన రైతు. పుట్టుక నుంచి చావు వరకు తన జీవితంలో జరిగిన ఘట్టాలు సాధారమైనవే. అవి మట్టిని నమ్ముకున్న ప్రతీ రైతు జీవితంలో జరిగేవే. కానీ చదివే పాఠకుడికి అవి అసాధనమైన ఘట్టాలుగా అనిపిస్తాయి. దానికి కారణం కేశవ రెడ్డి గారి రచనాశైలి. కేశవ రెడ్డి గారు సృష్టించిన మాటలు, సన్నివేశాలు, వర్ణనలన్నీ కనిపించని భావాలన్నీ చూపిస్తాయి. చదివే పాఠకులకు రైతు దేహమైతే తాను దున్నే భూమి ఆత్మలా అనిపిస్తుంది. అదే భూమిని అమ్ముకున్నప్పుడు ఆత్మ నుంచి వేరైపోయిన దేహం పడిన క్షోభ కనిపిస్తుంది.
రైతు చావు రైతోక్కాడితే కాదు. ఆ చావుకి కారణాలు, ఆ చావు తర్వాతి పరిణామాలు ఆ రైతు చుట్టూవున్న ప్రతీ పాత్ర తాలూకు భావోద్వేగాల్ని ఎలా ప్రభావితం చేశాయో కేశవ రెడ్డి గారు చాల బాగా విశ్లేషించారు. కేశవరెడ్డి గారు రైతు చావు ఆత్మహత్య, ప్రాయోపవేశం మధ్య ఉండే గీతలో దాగివున్న రహస్యంలాగా చిత్రీకరించి, పాఠకుల ఊహలకు వదిలేసారు.
కథగా మొదలై, విషాద గాధగా మారి, ప్రజలు గుర్తుకుతెచ్చుకునే పురాణంగా మార్చేయడం కేశవ రెడ్డి గారికే సాధ్యం.

Yet another powerful, moving, and gut-wrenching work by this remarkable author. This novella delves into the life of a farmer who is forced to give up his land to repay his loans, exploring the profound impact of this loss.
As I read, I found myself deeply moved, often on the verge of tears, experiencing the farmer's crisis alongside him. The emotional depth of this book reminded me of the intensity found in Fyodor Dostoevsky's works.
Sri Kesava Reddy has left an indelible mark on me. My writing, my visualization, my sensibility—everything consists of and is shaped by the emotionality and sentimental impact of the words evolved from the ink of his thoughts.
P.S. I read an edition published by 'Navachethana Publishing House,' which was one of the worst editions I've encountered. It was filled with repeated paragraphs, spelling errors, and grammar mistakes. If not for my admiration of the author, I would have returned it to the publisher in frustration.

ఇది కేశవ రెడ్డి గారి రచన లో నేను చదివిన రెండో పుస్తకం.. మొదటిది "అతడు అడవిని జయించాడు". అందులో లానే కథ లోని ముఖ్య పాత్ర పొందే గెలుపు చిత్త శుద్ధి తో కూడిన కర్మ దారా లభించేది తప్ప భౌతికమైన అంశం కాదు అనే thought ఇందులో కూడా ఓ undercurrent theme గా establish చేశారు..
అప్పులపాలైన రైతు ఎలా చనిపోయాడు? వినడానికి అతి సాధారణం గా ఉన్నా ఆ అంశాన్ని స్పృశించిన రెడ్డి గారి రచనా శైలి అసాధారణం.. ముఖ్య పాత్రధారి తానే కాకుండా తన చుట్టూ ఉన్న ప్రతి అణువు ఆ పాత్ర తాలూకు భావోద్వేగాల్ని ప్రతిబింబించేలా రాయడం ఒక్క కేశవ రెడ్డి గారికే సాధ్యం.. ఆత్మహత్య, ప్రాయోపవేశం..ఈ రెండిటి మధ్య ఉండే thin line మీద ఈ కథ నడవడం నన్ను ఎంత గానో ఆకట్టుకున్న మరో అంశం..

It's a reminder of how society is treating the farmers. It is still soo relevant to these times and remains for the future as well. It just goes to prove how earthly connected is the farmer to his piece of land. He doesn't want to build skyscrapers, nor would he want a highfive life. All he needs is a farm where he can rely upon and if he loses it, it costs him his own life. It really touched my heart.
