Book Review: The Rancher in Stilettos: Part 3 by Marcia Williams Cromer

We often hear the classic writing advice, “show, don’t tell.” In this installment, Cromer leans heavily into telling—but what she does tell is one wildly entertaining story. This book is pure drama in the best way: messy, chaotic, unpredictable, and absolutely designed for readers who enjoy a good, juicy storyline.

Plot & Structure:
While the plot had plenty of dramatic elements, it lacked the clear cause-and-effect progression that gives a story momentum. Some events unfolded without obstacles or buildup, which made the overall arc feel less cohesive. Characters appeared, disappeared, and reappeared with little narrative setup. For example, we open with Cory, yet he doesn’t return to the page until Chapter 16. Lane is consistently referenced but not developed, and Zaide ultimately ends up with Carmelo—a character who only receives brief attention earlier in the story. Additionally, chapters centered on side characters like Delores, Charmaine, and her sugar daddy were amusing, but didn’t clearly advance the main storyline.
Character Development:
There are essentially three heroes—Cory, Lane, and Carmelo—but each of them felt underdeveloped. Their motivations and emotional arcs were not explored deeply enough to create strong connection or payoff.
Point of View (POV):
The story shifts through every character’s perspective, resulting in an omniscient style that tells us what is happening rather than immersing us in the moment. This broad POV created distance instead of enhancing the emotional dynamics.
Editing & Grammar:
There are noticeable grammatical and spelling errors (“Time Square” instead of Times Square, “first” instead of fist, “fir” instead of for, etc.). A thorough proofreading pass would strengthen the final read.
Final Thoughts:
Despite structural and craft challenges, Cromer knows how to tell a story packed with drama, conflict, and personality. If you enjoy fast-moving, soap-style storytelling where the drama never stops, this series offers exactly that. With tighter editing, clearer character arcs, and more focused POV, the emotional impact could be even stronger.
