The final book in Hannon’s Private Justice series is an intriguing thrill ride from start to finish. The story unfolds at the perfect pace to keep readers entertained, yet hungry for the next page. As unlikely as it seems for all of the Phoenix, Inc. employees to find love with clients, it’s easy to put that aside when the plot is so well-written. Three years ago, Kate Marshall lost her husband in a boating accident, and her four-year-old son disappeared. She has tried to move forward, but when she sees a little boy in a mall who looks and talks exactly like her son, Kate wonders if she is imagining things, or if it could really be true that her son is alive. She hires Connor Sullivan and the team from Phoenix, Inc. The more they discover, the more unbelievable the story’s twists become.
Its been three years since Kate lost her husband and young son to a boat accident.
Her grief is immense as you can imagine. But what if, you were out, and you seen your son? Would think it was wishful thinking? Grief? Would you follow through on what you saw?
Kate believes that was her son she saw, shes convinced of it, so much so she hires a private investigator.
But who and why wants her son hidden?
This is the bulk of this story line which keeps your glues, its a plot that thickens and thickens and you just have to dive right in the middle of it all.
I am so glad I got this from Net Galley for the publishers of Revell, brilliant mystery
Well then, that was a wild ride! And painful . . .
After reading and loving Vanished by this author, I was excited to finish the series. The characters from Phoenix Inc were such fun, deep characters, and I couldn't wait to read more about them.
I loved Kate. She was such a realistic and relatable character. Her story especially touched my heart. Connor, also, was fantastic. I really enjoyed getting to hear his story. I'm not sure if I like him or Cal better! Sanders was an amazing and terrible character. Even though he was the villain, because Hannon made him so realistic and relatable, you didn't want him to be the villain. You wanted him to have a happy ending. But unfortunately both Kate and Sanders couldn't have a happy ending, which was sad.
The story was a wild ride from beginning to end, and the romance was really sweet. It was also an intensely emotional story, which I loved even if it did hurt. Sometimes in suspense novels, the heart of the characters gets lost, but not so with this one. The chemistry between the characters, especially the Phoenix Inc characters was so awesome! Nikki and Dev will always crack me up . . . They're great comedic relief.
The ending was so sweet and heartwarming and definitely made me cry.
The reason I docked a star was because the romantic attraction between the characters got a little out of hand for my tastes. While it was very sweet, some of the physical attraction, along with a few mildly inappropriate comments\thoughts made me squirm.
All in all, I really enjoyed this novel! Hannon is a very talented author.
I've read and really enjoyed all of Irene Hannon's romantic suspense novels, so I was eager to finish up her latest series, Private Justice, with this final book. I loved it. The characters were wonderful -- I loved how they conversed with each other -- and my favorite character was probably Nikki (she made me laugh a lot!).
The suspense aspect was good. For the majority of Deceived the villain didn't seem that bad to me, but later on we started to see his darker side...still, he wasn't the worst villain in my opinion, even if the things he did were terrible. The story had a different feel from other suspense books, probably because of that, which I actually liked for a change.
Overall, a really good read and conclusion to this series. I look forward to reading Irene's next novel and recommend Deceived and the previous two books, if you like inspirational romantic suspense novels.

SUMMARY: A grieving mother. A mysterious child. And a dedicated PI who's determined to solve the puzzle. For three years, Kate Marshall has been mourning the loss of her husband and four-year-old son in a boating accident. But when she spots a familiar-looking child on a mall escalator, she's convinced it's her son. With police skeptical of her story, she turns to private investigator Connor Sullivan for help. As the former Secret Service agent digs into the case, the boating "accident" begins to look increasingly suspicious. But if Kate's son is alive, someone is intent on keeping him hidden--and may go to lethal lengths to protect a sinister secret. As Irene Hannon's many fans have come to expect, Deceived is filled with complex characters, unexpected twists, and a riveting plotline that accelerates to an explosive finish.
REVIEW: This third and final book in the Private Justice series brought the series to a great conclusion. The characters' interaction and slowly developing romance was well developed and realistic. The suspense was developed at a pace that kept the reader wondering if the villain was truly behind the mystery as he was presented as such a "nice guy." Definitely not the usual suspect.
The plot escalated with a piece by piece realistic grit that will definitely keep the reader turning pages as the suspense climbs. The story is told through the point-of-view of Kate, Connor, and the antagonist which adds to the interest.
Once again Irene Hannon has written a series that will definitely appeal to those who love romantic suspense.
FAVORITE QUOTES: "Some people feel more deeply than others. And I don't consider that a liability. In fact, those people tend to be even stronger. They have to be in order to survive."
"Coincidence is a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous."
Deceived is such a gripping and interesting story! It gets off to a wonderful start that grabs the reader and makes it impossible to not care about what happened to Kate Marshall’s family. It is book three in the Private Justice series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel if you haven’t read the other books in the series.
While this book deals with a woman who’s been widowed and who’s son was killed three years earlier, it is not at all a depressing read. I found Deceived to be riveting, with great suspense. I love the way this author lets the reader into the mind of the “bad guy” in the story, as well as the hero and heroine of the story.
I couldn’t help but like Kate Marshall and Connor Sullivan, two people who have made mistakes in their past, but have the desire to go forward with their lives in the best way possible. Kate was a very inspiring heroine, trying to rise above the grief that had incapacitated her three years earlier. Connor was professional and dependable. I really liked the way Connor went about his investigation of the claims that Kate brought to him regarding the possibility of spotting a boy that looks and talks just like the child she thought was dead. Very intense stuff!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Baker Publishing Group in exchange for an honest review, which I have given.
Typical to what we’ve come to expect from the talents of Irene Hannon, her final novel in her latest (aka my favorite!) series is no let down. Yet, somehow it’s creatively new and different.
STORY: Deceived is the story of grieving mother, Kate Marshal whose husband died three years ago. She also believes her four-year-old son died in the same boating accident, but Keith’s body was never found. When a chance encounter in a busy shopping mall leads her to believe that her son is still alive, Kate employs the help of Phoenix, INC. detective Connor Sullivan. This she does in the hope that she will finally have the answers that have plagued her for years. What neither one of them expected was the web of secrets they’d uncover.
Deceived, by Irene Hannon | Book Review
This trilogy has actually been one of my favorites from Irene or really, in this genre period. It’s been somehow, indescribably different which is what let it have a voice all its own. One of the funniest bits is the banter between the three partners (Dev, Cal and Connor). Getting back on task with the specifics of Deceived, what I appreciate most is this isn’t the same kind of edge-of-your-seat suspense as the norm. Hannon manages to find “new” devices to ensure the pages keep turning (no kidnapping the heroine here!). Instead, wonderfully the danger that does amp up the climax doesn’t overstay its welcome and does just what it sets out to!
Some readers may not enjoy this story as well because it’s more information gathering and conversations than car-chase-happy, but I like this missing element. One of my biggest pet peeves in suspense novels is the lack of “real” (or appropriate passage of time) one-on-one time with the leading couple who fall in love. By eliminating that high-action mentality, Irene allows the reader to revel and enjoy the burgeoning romance between Connor and Kate. She gives it more depth and emotional stability because of that – plus the ending is darling. Following in the good character traits is the interesting "villain" character; he's more conflicted than most and isn't the stereotypical evil person we've come to expect. Yet another way Irene Hannon's books are anything but ordinary.
If you like suspense novels and if you've been reading this series, you’ll enjoy reading Irene Hannon’s latest; the final book ends very well and does justice to the series.
Sincere thanks to the publisher for providing a complimentary copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
Kate Marshall lost her husband and four year old son to a tragic boating accident in New York state where they lived. The two were on their regular Wednesday morning fishing trip when someone found and reported that their boat was overturned and their life jackets were found. The cause was never really explained to suit Kate because her husband never removed their life jackets in the boat. Kate's husband's body was found but her son's never was found.
Three years later, Kate is now living in St. Louis working as a counselor to help women get back into the job market. This book grabbed me in the opening scene of the first chapter when Kate Marshall is at the mall running an errand during her lunch break for an older neighbor and hears a child say "poppysicle," an unusual word that her son used to say. When she looks at the boy, he evens looks like how her son would look at age seven. She tried to find the boy and the man that he was with but couldn't find them. She searched all over the mall to no avail. She feels so strong about the resemblance that she hires a detective agency to help her find him if possible. After all, her son's body was never found and she needs to get closure and maybe if she dare hope, her son.
Connor Sullivan, former Secret Service agent and now PI with his three friends, has great doubts on many levels that the boy is Kate's son but decides to help her with a look at the security tapes at the mall. Surprisingly, he sees the boy and man that she saw and decides to go a step farther to investigate the case.
This is another great Christian romantic suspense novel by Irene Hannon and an end to an excellent three book series, Private Justice.
Deceived grabs your attention from the first scenes and doesn’t let go. The author does an amazing job of weaving small details together. Three years ago Kate lost her husband and son in a boating accident. Kate sees a boy that looks like it could be her son; his body was never found. The police and mall security think she is just wishful thinking and do not take her seriously. She then reaches out to a PI; enters Phoenix and Connor. Connor is a retired Secret Service agent and is skeptical about her story but willing to do some research. Secondary characters add dimensions to the story that make it even more special. Pauline is a great friend and a wise woman to give her advice. You always need someone to talk you off the ledge Nikki is a continuing character from the series and is just hilarious. I was impressed how the author handled Kate’s reactions to the development of the case. I found the development of the case also fascinating as to how they track down the identity of the boy on the escalator. The author made both Kate and Connor human by revealing problems from their past and how they overcame them. Love the commradery between the guys in the Phoenix office. I was thrilled when they mention Nick and the raggedy ann doll from the St Louis FBI office; if you have read the other series. Deceived is part of the series but can be read alone. I recommend reading them all and reading then in order to follow the character development of some of the secondary characters from the PI firm

This is a Mystery/Romantic Suspense, and the third book in the Private Justice series. I am starting this review off by saying I have not read the first book in this series, but I have read and reviewed the second book in this series. This book is a fast pace with a ton of Mystery Suspense and a hit of Romance. I loved this book. The mystery was everything I wanted, and I loved it so much. I would not say there was a twist, but it was a mystery that slowly revealed what was going on. I loved the beginning of this book. I feel the beginning pulled you in and it made you what to figure out what was going on. I loved the characters. I also loved figuring out what was going on. The ending was cute, and it was a great ending to this book.
"Deceived" by Irene Hannon is the third enthralling book in the "Private Justice" series and begins three years after Kate Marshall loses her husband and son in a boating accident. Working at a new job in St. Louis, Kate never expects to spot a young boy in the mall who looks a lot like her son whose body was never recovered. With the help of Private Investigator (PI) Connor Sullivan clues begin to emerge that give credibility to Kate's belief that four year old Kevin may have survived the accident.
In a plot that combines mystery, romance and suspense Irene Hannon ramps up the intensity and intrigue as Connor pieces together a puzzle with few clues and only a mother's strong conviction that her husband John would have kept his long held promise to make sure he and Kevin wore life preservers when fishing. In this story you sense Kate's conviction to find out the truth, Connor's dedication to unravel the mystery, and a killer's commitment to protect the child he loves and calls son. It's fast-paced, the action never slowing as events unfold and Connor doggedly works to solve the case, and yet keep his ethical integrity as love between the two blossoms. With clever dexterity Irene Hannon has woven a tale of faith with twists and turns that keep the reader captivated until its explosive conclusion. She sends powerful messages throughout about learning from our experiences, not judging others, trusting in miracles and the power of God working in our lives.
Like the plot the characters are unforgettable, realistic and complex each one dealing with past mistakes and possibilities in an unpredictable future. Kate Marshall, the Director and counsellor at New Start is a kind, level-headed and caring woman who has survived heartbreak and addiction. Connor Sullivan a former Secret Service agent who works as a PI for Phoenix Inc. is assertive, competent, and a listener who instills trust and confidence in his clients. Haunted by guilt from his past, he's determined to be honest, principled and professional in his client-relationship with Kate even as their love grows. Greg Sanders a construction worker who's troubled by the tragic loss of his son and wife is deceptive and paranoid, his fear and bitterness steering his dark decisions. Kevin (aka Todd) a loveable and sweet-natured seven year old is reliant on, and trusts the man he calls father. All these characters and many more add to the power and drama of an exciting and fascinating story you can't put down.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Deceived" which I highly recommend to those that like an inspirational novel loaded with mystery and romance.
Three years ago, Kate Marshall lost both her husband and their four year old son in a boating accident. When she sees a child at the mall who looks like her son, her world is shaken. She wants answers. With her story dismissed by mall security and the local police, Kate turns to the PIs at Phoenix Inc. Connor Sullivan is a former Secret Service agent. When Kate lands in his office with her incredible story, Connor vows to do all that he can to determine the truth. As his investigation takes him deeper and deeper into the events at the mall, he soon realizes that the accident wasn't really an accident. Will Connor be able to identify the child before something else happens? And is there a chance for a relationship with Kate once everything is over and done?
I think that this was probably my favorite of the entire series. The day I received this one in the mail, I'd also received two others. But this was the one I was the most excited about.
I loved Connor. I've wanted to read his story since he appeared on the pages of Vanished. Of the three PIs, he is my favorite. I loved how he was determined to get to the truth. I also loved how he tried (unsuccessfully) to not fall for Kate. His relationship with his partners was one that captured my attention too. He showed mutual respect for the cases his partners were working and knew they would help him out as they needed to.
I thought that Kate was also really well developed. She's hurting. She's grieving. She really only wants answers. If she gets evidence that the child at the mall isn't her son, she'll let it rest. But if there is the slightest bit of hope, she latches onto it. I thought that her search for answers really showed her emotion. She loved her son. She was falling for Connor. She didn't want to get confused. I also thought that the way that she put her life back together after the accident shows just how strong she was.
I really enjoyed Todd. He's the child that Kate saw at the mall. He doesn't know why his dad has gotten protective of him all of a sudden, but he knows his father loves him. My heart broke a bit for him with all that he'd been through and was going through.
The suspense builds fast in this book. When the puzzle pieces started to fall into place, it really picked up. I found it to be a true page turner.
I received this book for free from Revell Books for the purpose of reviewing. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of romantic suspense, Irene Hannon, Dee Henderson, Lynette Eason
Disclaimers: I received an ebook of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
My Synopsis: Kate is still battling to overcome the grief of losing her husband and son. But when she believes she sees her son in a mall, everything she thought she knew starts unraveling at the seems.
She's hesitant to go to the PI to ask for help, but sees no other alternative. Connor is just as hesitant to accept the case but agrees to take it on. What neither of them expected to find was the undeniable chemistry between them or the secrets that somebody is determined to keep just that—a secret.
My Overall Thoughts/Impressions: I adore Irene Hannon. I think I own every suspense novel she has ever written. Hannon is an incredible author and so when I was given the opportunity to read this novel, I jumped at the chance.
This book does not disappoint. The characters are beautifully developed, the writing compelling, and of course the book well-researched. I found myself staying up way too late reading this book simply because I couldn't put the book down.
This book is amazing in one word. I would recommend this to anybody who loved romance or suspense. You won't be disappointed.
So why 4 stars? I always have such high expectations for Irene Hannon because like I said earlier I adore her. This book did not disappoint. It was, however, not my favorite one by her. I give it a solid 4 stars because it definitely stood above the crowd and I definitely want to go buy the book. It just missed that extra something to be a 5.
In Summary: Hannon's lastest novel Deceived is a spell-binding read that readers will not want to miss. A fast-paced novel that will leave you turning the pages faster and faster.
Warnings/Side-notes: No concerns. I would recommend this book to readers of any age.
The Wrap-up: I honestly am so excited to see what Hannon comes up with next. I for one will be buying it. I love this author so much.
Be ready for your heart in your throat type of adventure as you begin turning the pages of Deceived. Don’t know if I could survive all that happened to Kate in this story, and a chance of fate or faith brings her a full turn in recovering from her loss. What would bring Kate from New York State to St Louis Missouri? With so much that has happened to her, she is now in a job she is well qualified for, and is giving back to others. What a chance of circumstances are about to happen, and will she be able to trust those who offer help. I cannot imagine loosing both my husband and my four year old, and then thinking I’m seeing my child on the elevator. Hearing him use an unusual favorite word, and then you must feel like your dreaming. Could you trust what you think you’ve just seen? We all never want to be in Kate’s shoes, can’t even imagine, your worse nightmare. Love how she is led to the best PI agency, and the compassion of one particular agent, Connor Sullivan. I did have different scenarios running through my mind, with Todd and Greg. What a great Dad, Greg is, how could he be evil, must be someone different? You’re going to find you mind almost pulling for the bad guys in this story, but who are the bad guys? I kept trying to find the answers, and they do come, but boy did I have a time guessing! What a great read!
I received this book through Revell Publishers and was not required to give a positive review.
Nothing could have prepared Kate Marshall for her chance encounter on a mall escalator . . . . nothing. How could the young boy going up; be her son? Her son allegedly died in a boating accident which also claimed the life of her husband, but Kevin's body was never recovered. Three years later, new job, new city, Kate is thrown into a whirlwind of emotion as she frantically searches for answers.
Former Secret Service agent Connor Sullivan is intrigued by Kate's story when she secures the help of his private investigation firm. If the little boy on the mall escalator was indeed Kate's son, then a horrendous crime has been committed. Who? Why? How? Those are the questions that must be answered. As Connor and Kate work closely together to pursue even the slimmest of leads, they both realize that this investigation could be the beginning of a lot more than the reuniting of a mother and son.
Irene Hannon crafts wonderful suspense-filled tales and "Deceived" is no exception. But, in spite of a strong story thread and engaging, interesting characters, the subject matter echoes some of the author's previous novels. However, it won't prevent me from reading future books; I am quite the fan for life!
This is my first Irene Hannon book and first purchase in the Christian suspense genre. I couldn't resist a 50% off sale around Christmastime, though it took me awhile to get to it. I have since found book 2 on a good sale as well as one of her contemporary romances, and am currently partway through "Against All Odds", which I've got from the library. So you could say I enjoyed the writing in just a little bit!
Solid 4.5 stars. It caught my attention at once and drew in my sympathies not just for the searching mother, PI, and little boy, but surprisingly even making me pity the deep-dyed villain and his losing fight for a normal life. Even though he deserved every ounce of his desserts, he was a multifaceted character that shows just how easily the average human can become a monster when they give in to impulses. The story was very believable and very well written.
Irene Hannon's suspense novels are hazardous to my poor nails! Literally a nail-biter. This one is a bit different in that the crime had happened three years previously, so the suspense is more focused on how they are going to manage solving the seemingly impossible-to-solve mystery. The story is told from multiple perspectives, including the villain- who doesn't seem so villainous for the majority of the book. Great chemistry between the main characters and deep emotions make this a compelling story!
(Thank you to Baker Publishing and Revell Books for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review)
I love Irene Hannon's books. She writes the most wonderful suspenseful and romantic books. This one was no exception. It was the last in this series, but she is working on a new one.
She writes well and keeps the reader guessing until the very last. Her characters are well fleshed out and the reader can feel like they know them.
Her romance part of the books are great, too, as is the spiritual contest. Her books have pride of place on my shelves.
Definitely my favorite from this series! Romance, mystery, and characters all came out much stronger this time around. This villain was one of the strongest and most sympathetic that I've read from Irene Hannon. Also, for longtime Hannon readers, this one wasn't as twisted and sick in action as most of hers.
After finished book 2, Trapped, I thought that would be my favourite, but similar to most of the other reviews on this book, Deceived is probably my favourite and since it was the last book of the series, the author left the best for last.
Kate contacted a PI after seeing a boy who looks like her son she though was dead for 3 years and so the journey continues.
Both Kate and Connor had to heal from pasts which left them with some open wounds. I have liked Connor since the first book and think Kate was a great fit in challenging him.
There was quite a few "holding-my-breath-moments" in this suspense plot. As with most of Irene's books, the villain is revealed early on. But with this villain, I found myself wishing he didn't do what I think he did and that he would also have some sort of happy ending since he suffered a lot of losses which pushed him over the edge. He clearly loved Todd and he was not the typical bad guy. The author did a great job in making the reader question what would be the best outcome for all characters involved.
I just loved the interaction between the Phoenix guys and especially Dev and Nikki and Dev and Connor as well. There was a few humorous moments to lighten the suspense and I'm actually sad to say goodbye to them. There was even mention of a past character from one of Irene's early series.
The author delivers some of the worst of every parent's fear, a missing child. This plot-driven drama begins on page one and carries us breathlessly through to the bitter end. There's no letting down. It's a sad reminder of the horrors we hear of in everyday life.
Kate Marshall's husband John and their three-year-old son Kevin meet disaster on a fishing trip in Braddock Bay. Presumably their boat tipped over. Her husband's body was found. He had a gash in his head and had drowned. Her son's body Kevin was never found. A life jacket was found floating in the lake. Her husband had sworn to Kate that they would always wear their lifejackets.
Kate needed to get away. She settled in Saint Louis. Three years have gone by since the terrible incident. On one momentous day while she is in a shopping mall, riding in the down escalator, she hears the voice of a young boy with a man going in the up escalator who says aloud the word "popsicle". It's the same way her son had said the very word. She races to catch up with them but to no avail.
She decides to hire a private investigator, Connor Sullivan, to look into this. He comes with an impressive Secret Service background. They are immediately drawn to each other. Connor tried as best as he could to be the professional and leave his emotions in check but it was too late. It was love at first sight. And Kate felt the same way as well.
Connor returns to the mall and is able to procure security footage of of the boy and the man on the escalator as well as them leaving a 'bear party' store. Kate examines the photos and sees a stunningly close resemblance of her son, a few years older. Connor requests Kate to get some pictures of her son that he may have age progressed.
Connor returns to that store shown on the security footage and discovers that the boy had been part of a birthday party of another boy. This discovery leads him to a child daycare school. He sets up surveillance. After many hours, he's able to take some pictures of the young boy show on the security feed. He goes by the name of Todd.
Shortly thereafter, he requires the aged progressed pictures of Kate's son Kevin. And wouldn't you know it, they were a match. Now Kate realizes that she had not been imagining it. That was her son. This further fuels investigation.
It's discovered that the man claiming to be Todd's father, Greg, appears to be a loving parent. Greg has been seen in the company of a woman, Diane. They're not married. Since that incident at the escalator, he has been distancing his son and himself from her. Naturally she was confused by all this. She was never informed of the escalator incident.
Diane quite innocently comes into contact with Kate while searching for employment. Kate is a counselor of a facility called New Start. During a short break, Kate left the room to get them some tea. Diane accidentally knocked over a file which spilled out a picture of Greg's son Todd. She was totally confused by seeing his picture in her office.
Later she confronts Greg with this information. He passed it off to her as a mere coincidence. From what Diane could see, Greg appeared to becoming more paranoid by the moment. Now he knew that his secret's been blown.
Diane knows that something suspicious is happening with Greg and goes to see Kate. It's there that Diane discovers Kate's past about her husband and son's tragedy. Kate shows her Todd's photo enhanced picture. Now they can see the pieces have fit together. Greg is a murderer and kidnapper. Now all they have to do is prove it.
Deb’s Dozen: Missing child, a chance encounter—could it be? Poppysicles, blonde hair, love.
Saying good-bye to a wonderful series is always difficult, so reading Deceived, the third book in Irene Hannon’s Private Justice series was hard. I loved this premise and the characters—I only hope Irene brings them back in another series. One thing we can all count on, thank goodness, is that there is another wonderful series in the wings we can anticipate.
Kate Marshall has mourned the loss of her husband, John, and their son, Kevin, for three long years. A fishing trip gone bad and two empty life vests spelled the end to all her dreams. After a tough period of recovery and a move to St. Louis to start over, Kate has her life more or less back together. Then, running an errand at the mall for a friend, she hears a young voice ask for a poppysicle—Kevin’s word for the treat. Looking up at the sound, she sees a boy with wheat blond hair—just like hers and Kevin’s. Could it be? Is her son alive?
After fruitlessly searching the mall for the man and boy she saw, she decides to hire Phoenix, Inc., a private investigation firm. Connor Sullivan draws her case and is drawn to her. He agrees to help, even though the police don’t think she has any reason to hope. Will he uncover any clues? Will that attraction wax or wane?
Hannon has constructed another complex yarn, with complex characters, and lots of twists and turns that keep you turning pages hours on end. I loved this book as much as I loved the other two in the series, Vanished and Trapped. You will love Deceived, too! Five stars for the book and the series. Get them – now!
Irene Hannon has written more than forty-five novels and is the winner of a multitude of awards including two RITAs from the Romance Writers of America, a Carol Award, a Retailers’ Choice Award, and many more. She and her husband make their home in Missouri and, when not otherwise busy, enjoy coffee shops, traveling, and their family. To get all the skinny about Irene, visit www.IreneHannon.com.
Revell gave me a copy of Deceived for my candid review
I always enjoy a good suspense novel from Irene Hannon. Her style is quite intriguing to me. From the very beginning you know all the characters involved and you know the overall mystery. What you don't know is the motive, and that is what makes her stories zing.
I appreciate how Irene uses her characters to move the story-line along. She is masterful at tugging on all of your emotions, especially sympathy. I'm amazed that I almost felt sorry for the villain in this one. He was so loving . . . until he wasn't.
In Deceived we meet Kate Marshall three years after her husband and son were supposedly killed in a boating accident. She's finally got her feet back under her and is making a new life for herself in St. Louis. One chance encounter at the mall changes everything.
Before she can let the incident go she just has to investigate it a bit further. She seeks out Connor Sullivan with Phoenix, Inc., a private investigative firm that specializes in such cases. At first her situation seems like it will be a tragic incidence of mistaken identity, but after digging into it a bit the story gains traction.
Meanwhile we are introduced to Greg Sanders and his son Todd. They have also recently moved to St. Louis to start a new life. That same chance encounter at the mall has the potential to completely destroy everything he has so meticulously put together.
This very complex story is so tightly woven that you will be forced to continue reading just to understand why. From the beginning the questions just build and build until finally answers begin to be revealed. This was a stunning end to a great series.
I'll leave you with my favorite line of the book:
"Coincidence is a small miracle in which God chooses to remain anonymous" ~ Connor Sullivan in Deceived by Irene Hannon

A grieving mother.
DECEIVED is the third and final book in the Private Justice series by Ms. Hannon. While DECEIVED stands alone, fans will want to read Trapped and Vanished to get the stories of the other two PIs in the business.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading DECEIVED and getting to know Connor and Kate. It was a bit of a stretch of the imagination at the start of the book, but Ms. Hannon handled it well, and worked it out in a believable way.
I read this book through in a Sunday afternoon, between services and after the evening service, absolutely could not put it down. If you like romantic suspense, Irene Hannon is one of the absolute best and you’ll love DECEIVED. I can’t wait until her next book. $9.99 Kindle. $15.99 paperback. 416 pages.
Irene Hannon's final book in the "Private Justice" series, "Deceived", kept me on the edge of my seat from the opening chapter to the riveting conclusion! As a parent, I found it terribly easy to step into Kate's shoes and imagine how I would cope with the loss of my spouse and my son all in one day. Horrifying! I wanted to skip to the end of the novel to ensure myself that all would turn out well, yet I'm so glad that I didn't, but instead allowed myself to be drawn fully into the story.
The characters are expertly portrayed, and you will soon find yourself rooting for Kate and Connor, while fighting an odd hint of sympathy for the villain as well. I continue to be amazed at the skill with which Hannon writes both suspense novels and engaging contemporary novels as well. "Deceived" finds her at her best, with a mounting tension that made me want to lean into the pages and tell the characters to hurry up and act! And for those readers who enjoy a little romance in their books, they are going to love the almost forbidden relationship that sparks between Connor and Kate, adding for some humorous moments along with some tender ones too.
All in all, "Deceived" is an excellent conclusion to what has proven to be a thoroughly entertaining and satisfying series. Good, clean suspense, plenty of action-packed scenes, and lots of true love to go around - what more could you ask for?

From the prologue to the epilogue, Deceived was a novel that kept me guessing what would happen next.
The storyline was compelling. What would happen when a mother spotted her son 3 years after he was presumed dead from a boating accident? The characters made this story. Kate Marshall, who spots a child she believes is her son, has moved on with her life. Her character is well developed in this novel, with a complex backstory. The hero, Connor, is just as complex, and the pair make quite the duo as they sort out the mystery surrounding the boy she spotted.
There were characters I felt for, and even some that I was surprised about my own sympathy for, and in many ways, I think that is one of the strongest aspects of this novel. Having a compelling storyline with quite a few surprises in it didn’t hurt either.
While this is the third novel in Irene Hannon’s Private Justice series, I don’t think they need to be read in order. I haven’t read the first two, and I don’t feel like I missed out on anything. There were a few references to the cases that I presume were the first two books, but it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of this one. However, those two books are getting added to my list of books to read at some point, along with other novels by Irene Hannon. I’m excited to read some more novels from her in the future. I don’t think I will be disappointed.
**I received a free copy of this book from Revell in exchange for my honest review**
The storytelling in this novel swept me up from the very first page and didn't let go until the end. The premise kept me turning pages, eager to see how this situation would play out. I liked Kate a lot (she has a really cool name to start with!): her compassion and desire to help others in her profession as a counsellor made her easy to connect with. I could also tell (though it wasn't stated overtly) that she had a great faith and trust in God as well. Even though we've already had 2 previous books in the series about the partners at the Phoenix PI firm, I feel like I knew almost zilch about Connor going into this story. I think the more gregarious personalities of both Cal and Dev allowed his more subtle way of doing things to fade into the background a bit, which, as I think about his former life as a Secret Service agent, might not be too far off the mark. That said, he's obviously good at his job, and a compassionate man as well, who has chosen to learn from previous mistakes and realign his priorities with God at the top. As with the other 2 books in the series, we knew the identity of the 'bad guy' from the beginning, but to see their thought process, especially as things started to unravel, was pretty chilling. (I think this might have been my favourite of the series.)
