3 Haziran 1981'de İstanbul - Eminönü'nde doğdu. Öğretmen birer anne babası ve kendinden dört yaş büyük bir ablası vardır. Bayrampaşa ilköğretim okulunu ve Vatan Anadolu Lisesi'ni bitirdi. 16 yaşında ilk karikatürü, Pişmiş Kelle dergisinde yer buldu. Daha sonra çizdiği köşeler yayınlanmaya başladı. Bir Süre Gırgır ve Ördek dergilerinde de çizdi. Mimar Sinan Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Grafik bölümüne girdi. İkinci sınıfta Lombak dergisinde ve daha sonra da Penguen dergisinde çizmeye başladı.

2007 Ağustosunda, Yiğit Özgür ve Memo Tembelçizer gibi bir grup çizerle birlikte, yeni bir dergi çıkartmak üzere Penguen'den ayrılmış ve 5 Eylül 2007' de Uykusuz adlı dergiyi çıkarmaya başlamışlardır.


Uykusuz'da çizgi öykü tarzındaki Sandık İçi isimli köşeyi çiziyor. Ayrıca, Sandık İçi ve Sandık İçi 2 adlı iki kitabı bulunmaktadır.

A Powerful Autobiography

This book offers deep insights into Turkey and its evolution over the past few decades. It vividly explores the country's societal divides, such as the tension between those advocating for a secular state versus a more religious, Muslim-leaning government. Themes like freedom of speech and the rise of authoritarianism are woven throughout, providing a compelling backdrop.

Amidst these broader cultural and political shifts, we follow Ersin's personal journey as he tries to persuade his parents to let him pursue his passion for cartooning.

This is the second book I've read by this author, and once again, I’m captivated by his art. His style is striking, but what really sets him apart is his mastery of color. I consider him one of the best colorists I've ever encountered—his use of color is simply exceptional and serves as a reference for others.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys autobiographies, especially those with a focus on art and culture.

Drawing on the Edge is a memoir, a true story of Ersin, a Turkish author of comics. Through this graphic novel, he tells us about his childhood enthusiasm and desire to be an artist. It is about his beginnings, his work for newspapers, and how his father warned him not to get involved with politics.

Ersin uses a distinguished style in his color illustrations that I soon got used to, and in the end, I loved it.

Thanks to Europe Comics for the ARC and this opportunity! This is a voluntary review, and all opinions are my own.

#czytamszeroko - 3 kwartał komiksy akcja Krysi z Kanału o książkach

Nie spodziewałam się tak pasjonującej i wciągającej opowieści sięgając po ten komiks. Losy jednostki wplecione są tutaj w losy kraju. Opowieść ma dużą dynamikę. Mam poczucie, że to trochę taka lekcja w pigułce o Turcji dla czytelnika zza granicy, który nie wie za dużo o historii tego kraju. Autor podaje tę wiedzę lekko i bez nadęcia że "powinnam wiedzieć" I też nie ma tutaj ideologicznej indoktrynacji choć wiemy z jakiej strony politycznej autor się wywodzi, nie ukrywa też tego jakie ma poglądy Przeczytałam ten tekst w drodze do pracy - 3/4 w jedną stronę i dokończyłam wracając z pracy. Raz że to komiks, dwa naprawdę ciężko było się oderwać. Czekam na drugi tom. Polecam

Досить швиденько прочитала новиночку від Nasha Idea - автобіографічний комікс

"Тривожний вісник Стамбула"
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🎄Його автор, Ерсін Карабулут у доволі впізнаваному стилі по суті розказав, як він дійшов до життя такого, а саме — став одним з відомих турецьких коміксистів, що працює в місцевому сатирично-політичному журналі.

🎄Але все було б просто і нецікаво, якби це була банальна історія "ну от я хотів малювати, тому малював, малював й домалювався". Автору "пощастило" жити у країні, яку як і багато інших, роздирає внутрішня напруга й протистояння між світським та релігійним, азійським та європейським, тоталітарним та демократичним.

🎄Ерсін дорослішав у бурхливий час, коли в Туреччині мінялася влада, по вулицях їздили танки (і ні, це були їхні власні танки, а не когось з окупантськими намірами), коли навіть форма вус щось та означала. Якщо ви трішки розбираєтесь в новітній історії країни, то розумієте, про які це роки йдеться, зокрема, приблизно на середні тому Ердоган стає мером Стамбула, а ближче до кінця - прем'єр-міністром. Мені ж довелося погуглити ці дати, але від того історія стала тільки об'ємнішою.

🎄Бо так її можна запросто розглядати не просто як історію дорослішання на тлі суспільно-політичних подій, а як історію народження нового героя. Адже скочування до тоталітаризму із новим (на той час прем'єром) вимагало від художників-сатириків неабиякої відваги. Ризик опинитися за гратами чисто за малюнок став реальним.

Що сподобалося?

❄️По-друге, те як міркував малий Ерсін щодо базових потреб людства: в його дитячій уяві малювали свої комікси всі люди навколо.

Що не сподобалося?
В нього на старті є цікавий зачин: він розповідає, що любить давать волю фантазіям, начебто 8-річний він спостерігає за сучасним світом через його очі. Але ця гілка нікуди не привела, просто обірвалася ⛄️

🔥Комікс має уточнення "Том 1", то можна розраховувати на продовження історії, сподіваюсь.

Przeczytałam pierwszy komiks, który znalazł się w finale Nagrody Kapuścińskiego, bo w moim odczuciu to zupełnie nie jest komiks reporterski, tylko memoir, a ja bardzo nie lubię takiego poszerzania kategorii, bo zaraz się okaże, że w nagrodzie na najlepszy reportaż literacki będzie można wyróżnić połowę rynku książki. Mogę wymienić 10 innych komiksów z ostatnich lat, które pasują do specyfiki nagrody dużo bardziej, a jurorzy je pominęli.
Nie zmienia to jednak faktu, że „Kroniki ze Stambułu” to rzecz świetna i warta docenienia.
Ersin Karabulut, dziś 43-latek, opisuje swoje dorastanie w Turcji i drogę, którą przeżył do spełnienia marzenia o zostaniu słynnym komiksiarzem. Teoretycznie jego historia, nie różni się niczym od tych opisanych przez innych komiksiarzy - trochę specyficzny chłopiec, który kocha komiksy o superbohaterach, zaczyna ich rysować; połączona z zazdrością fascynacja innymi rysownikami; rodzina, która niekoniecznie wyobraża sobie dla niego taką przyszłość, bo to żaden zawód; dojrzewanie i chęć zaimponowania dziewczynom; odbijanie się od drzwi wielu redakcji przed pierwszą publikacją - możemy zrobić listę i odhaczać. W praktyce, różni się wszystkim, właśnie dlatego, że dzieje się w Turcji, której historia i bieżąca polityka odciskają wyraźny ślad na codziennym życiu zwykłych obywateli. Jak w soczewce pokazuje lęk, który towarzyszy mniejszości, w czasie kiedy większość się radykalizuje, a politycy temu przyklaskują. Jak trudno jest pamiętać o własnych wartościach i być wiernym przekonaniom, kiedy czujesz się zagrożony. Jak krótka jest droga od „fajnopolityka” do dyktatora. Jak rozwijają się mechanizmy opresji - te odgórne i te oddolne. Dlaczego ograniczanie wolności prasy zawsze powinno być wielkim 🚩. Jak miłość i troska najbliższych może zamienić się w kulę u nogi. To wszystko zawsze jest gdzieś z tyłu głowy i zaważa na wyborach, które podejmuje osoba, szczególnie, jeśli tak jak bohater zajmuje się rysowaniem satyry politycznej, a to się władzom przestaje podobać.
Karabulutowi udaje się świetnie zachować proporcje między tym co osobiste, a polityczne, przez co komiks pomimo poważnych tematów jest lekki i świetnie się go czyta. Pomaga w tym na pewno poczucie humoru autora i doświadczenie jako satyryka, ale też charakterystyczna kreska, która różnicuje te dwie warstwy komiksu. Kiedy mówi o życiu bohatera jest komiksowa i karykaturalna, kiedy dotyka spraw poważnych jest bardzo realistyczna, niemal fotograficzna.
Bardzo fajny jest ten album, od konceptu, po realizację. Czekam na kolejne tomy!

I've been reading Ersin Karabulut's comics and stories ever since he started the humor magazine "Uykusuz" with other artists. I also read his collection albums of "Sandık İçi", as well as other graphic novels he created. So, when I saw that his new graphic novels started to be published in French, I was utterly curious. I couldn't really buy the French versions from Canada, nor the Turkish versions (of the ones that were translated), so when I saw this book in English on Netgalley, I got very excited.

If you read Ersin's comics and stories in humor magazines like Penguen and Uykusuz before, you'll remember some of the parts of the story he tells to his reader in this book. I was fairly familiar with the story of how his parents didn't initially want him to become a comic book/humor magazine artist, how he couldn't help himself because of his love and passion for comics, the hardships and the labor he had to go through, and how he finally found a way to do what he loves the most. Since Turkey is my home country too, I also witnessed some of the political events (I'm younger than Ersin by 8 years, so some of these events were either before my time or I was too little to remember them now) he mentions in this book and I, unfortunately, know what happens after where this book ends. But I think this was my first time reading him weaving his journey to become an artist with the political events and personas that hindered and/or threatened his professional as well as personal life this effectively. Maybe writing for a foreign audience in a foreign language helped him to reflect and tell more than he ever did in his own language since the foreign language offered him more freedom than his mother tongue -which is possibly something only the ones who lived under an oppressive regime can understand. And I loved this book, and the honesty, the emotion, the openness of it. It's a sad, bittersweet feeling to see that someone else also went through similar hardships as you did, and grew up with the same traditions, values, notions, and confusions as you did. I found that it must also be very hard, painful, and very close to the heart to tell about the dark history of your country as Ersin did in this book. Me, I start to tell my Canadian friends about the current situation my country is in and I find myself tongue-tied, flustered, and flabbergasted after two sentences. My eight-year-old self's mind would be blown in the worst way possible if she were to see the future from my eyes, I guess.

"Drawing on the Edge: Chronicles from Istanbul" is a great graphic novel for both Turkish and foreign readers who know or are curious about growing up and living in a country that is both a bridge between and a clashing point of East and West and having a dream at the same time.

It says this is Volume 1, so I'll be looking forward to Volume 2.

Les BD autobiographiques sont légions, Riad Sattouf et Guy Delisle sont deux auteurs qui ont acquis une grande renommée en se livrant à cet exercice. Ersin Karabulut est un auteur turc méconnu – ou jusqu’à présent quasiment inconnu – en France. Son Journal inquiet d’Istanbul nous parle classiquement de sa vocation de dessinateur et plus particulièrement d’auteur de bande dessinée et de son parcours d’étudiant et de jeune professionnel. Ce cheminement se déroule dans un pays qui a connu de nombreux bouleversements, la Turquie. Ce pays, il nous le rappelle, se situe à la confluence de l��Orient et de l’Occident, géographiquement, mais aussi politiquement et historiquement.

Notre pays est une sorte de pont jeté entre l’Orient et l’Occident, les enfants

Ce pays est tiraillé entre la laïcité qui est une valeur cardinale de l’Occident et l’influence de la religion dans la société. Cette dichotomie se traduit sur le plan politique, depuis la fin de l’Empire ottoman et la proclamation de la république par Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, par des affrontements entre ses partisans, les kemalistes, et les islamistes conservateurs. Ce conflit a pris un autre tournant avec l’arrivée au pouvoir de Recep Tayyip Erdoğan qui défend une vision impérialiste et religieuse de la Turquie.

Cette inquiétude qui qualifie son journal vient de cette instabilité et de ce conflit permanent, elle n’est pas une vue de l’esprit, mais a été nourrie par des faits puisqu’il a été confronté à la répression lorsqu’il était enfant, mais aussi lorsqu’il a commencé à travailler pour des journaux politique satirique. Ce combat pour la liberté d’expression raisonne très fort dans un pays comme la France qui est attaché à ces valeurs et a connu les attentats de Charlie Hebdo.

[…] Il nous appartient, à nous, de lutter contre ces gens [Erdogan et consort]. Voilà pourquoi nous dessinons. Pas pour épater les filles. Evidemment, si tu ne t’en sens pas capable, alors oui, laisse tomber.

La particularité de la Turquie est que cette lutte est intestine, elle déchire ses habitants. Enfin, l’auteur nous fournit des preuves de son honnêteté en nous dévoilant des épisodes moins glorieux de sa vie. Un mot sur les dessins qui sont très soignés bien que je n’apprécie pas particulièrement leur style et encore moins la mise en couleur – mais c’est une question de goût qui ne remet nullement en cause leur qualité. Ce n’est qu’un premier tome, je lirai la suite avec un vif intérêt.

This is the story of a little boy from Turkey, whose dream is to become a professional comic artist. But it's easier dreamt than done. The little boy is forced to abandon his goal and focus on fulfilling his parents wishes and the society's demands. But as he evolves, so does his country. Both the little boy and Turkey are facing challenges, that push them back. Yet both fight for what they want, to keep their dreams and democracy alive.

Ersin intricately weaves his story along with the tumultuous development of Turkey, giving us a candid picture of both. His sense of humor and vivid imagination is reflected in the dynamic comic strips. They reflect the bittersweet journey of the author and Turkey with honesty. Ersin seamlessly blends his art and storytelling in this novel. Drawing scenes from his life, Ersin lucidly captures characters. Like his father's distress, when faced with extremists, keeping the family safe and supporting Ersin's dream while also wanting to keep his son safe. It is an amalgam of his memoir, political satire and history. Ersin also gives a bird's eye view of the complex and layered society, its varied factions and their constant power play over each other. Just like heroes in comic novels, Ersin throws limelight on the real life heroes who stood for democracy while also portraying the ones who used power to control.

With lush art and dramatic storytelling packed with history and characters that are deep and emotive, Drawings on the Edge is a compelling and thought-provoking Graphic novel.

Le pas est mal assuré, même plutôt tremblant, quand le jeune Ersin, à peine entré dans l'adolescence, ose pousser pour la première fois la porte de la rédaction d'un des journaux satiriques du quartier branché d’Istanbul. Auto-abreuvé des héros BD, le garçon s'exerçait au dessin dans l'espoir d'atteindre l'unique objectif de sa vie : devenir dessinateur de presse.
Quelle ne fut pas sa joie quand, pour la première fois, un de ses dessins drôles est accepté et paraît dans les pages d'un hebdomadaire stambouliote. On était encore dans la Turquie de tous les possibles où il était autorisé de rire de ses dirigeants. Mais ça, c'était avant la prise du pouvoir des militaires et des extrémistes politiques ou religieux ou les deux à la fois.
Son père l'avait pourtant prévenu et lui intima à maintes reprises de mettre un terme précocement à cette carrière devenue d'autant plus dangereuse que Erdoğan est arrivé au pouvoir.
Les pressions s'amplifient, les menaces se multiplient sur ceux qui, tout en critiquant honnêtement un gouvernement de plus en plus autoritaire, ne veulent, par leur plume, qu'en rire et faire des blagues.
Ersin a peur. Que doit-il faire ? Poursuivre son engagement ? Ou suivre les sages conseils de son père ? Et il y a ce dessin de trop ? Celui qui fait basculer un destin… On en connait trop bien quelques exemples….

Nous suivons dans ce premier volume autobiographique, Ersin Karabulut qui nous raconte son parcours d’auteur de bande dessinée tout en dressant le portrait d’un pays en mutation, la Turquie. Très bon. Hâte de lire la suite.

Relat autobiogràfic d’Ersin Karabulut, autor turc reconegut internacionalment. De la seua ma coneixerem el seu amor infantil pels tebeos i com va arribar a convertir-se en un dibuixant professional, a pesar de la falta de suport dels seus pares, que no ho veien amb bons ulls. En paral·lel Karabulut ens conta la història recent del seu país, sota la influència aclaparadora de la figura política d’Erdogan, i el gir autoritari i de retallada de llibertats que el polític va acabar aplicant. La història acaba en un punt determinat, però l’autor adverteix de la seua intenció de continuar contant la seua vida en obres posteriors.

Una lectura molt interessant, una manera de conèixer la realitat d’un país tant desconegut com pot ser per a nosaltres Turquia. El dibuix te un estil molt personal, entre detallista i undergraund, molt expressiu. Pel que fa a la manera de contar la història, he notat algun sotrac en la continuïtat narrativa, ja que en alguns moments la historia es recolza merament en anècdotes personals puntuals.

Komiks do rozpatrywania na dwóch płaszczyznach. Z jednej strony historia o tym "jak zostałem rysownikiem", a z drugiej kontekst trudnych przemian społecznych i politycznych w Turcji na przestrzeni dekad, aż do ostatecznego dojścia do władzy Erdogana. Nie muszę chyba wspominać, że obie sfery są nierozerwalnie złączone. Nie jest to rzecz tak monumentalna jak choćby "Charlie Chan Hock Chye" i muszę przyznać, że momentami miałem głód większej ilości szczegółów tworzących tło dojrzewania bohatera, ale z drugiej strony zyskuje na tym komunikatywność, bo czyta się naprawdę dobrze. Myślę, że wszyscy, którzy ubolewają, że Riad Sattouf zakończył już cykl "Arab Przyszłości", mogą spokojnie przenieść swoją uwagę na "Kroniki ze Stambułu"

This lovely graphic memoir chronicles the political upheavals in Turkey from the late 70s onwards, seen through the eyes of Karabulut, a political cartoonist. Karabulut’s parents were government school teachers, and the violence between the left-wing and right-wing extremists directly affected them, since they weren’t insulated by their privilege. I loved his chapters on his early adolescence-he moves to a larger school that’s academically very rigorous, and he captures that feeling really well; when you’re the smartest kid in your little school, and suddenly you’re in a place where everyone’s smarter, and as hardworking, and in his case, a different social class who chose to ignore him. He finds a friend though, who shares his love of comics, and it’s lovely when that happens, and you find your tribe! ( well, or at least one fellow tribesman!) There are charming panels where these teenagers make their way to hipster Beyoglu, to submit their entries to a satirical magazine, and their awe and attempts at appearing cool and unaffected are adorable! I didn’t know of Turkey’s long-standing tradition of publishing satirical comic magazines, dating all the way back to the 19th Century. Karabulut goes on to trace his life, his changing ambitions to pursuing art, juxtaposed against the slow creep of rising religiosity, that were easy to ignore when it didn’t materially change your life. His parents seem absolutely lovely people, supporting his decision to take up something that wasn’t necessarily as economically stable and lucrative, as, say, pursuing engineering. Looking back at his life from where Turkey’s at in 2021, he finds that he can barely believe how it all seemed to drastically change in a relatively short timespan of a couple of decades. It’s excellently written-I love the vivid picture he draws of his life, the importance of comics to it ( some deeply moving panels have an entire panoply of iconic comic characters, that serve as his muses), class differences, ideological differences, and of course, the gorgeous illustrations of Istanbul, the rooftops , the BOsphorus, the neighbourhoods. The memoir’s titled Volume 1, and ends at a significant victory of sorts for the community of satirical cartoonists in Turkey, and for him personally. Throughout the comic, Karabulut emphasizes just how personal the political always is, and how you might think your position or privilege will protect you, but it really won’t.
I really hope there’s a Volume 2 in the works, and I’ll definitely buy that immediately. I can’t recommend this enough.

I was this close to stop reading right at the beginning because I really didn't like the art style, but I am very happy I decided to give it a go.

This is an autobiographical graphic novel about the artist's life and early years of his career. It is also an interesting look into Turkey in the 80s-90s. I have to admit I am quite ignorant about contemporary Turkish history, so I found the story quite interesting and informative.
Young Ersin's view of things are very relatable, and you can clearly feel the love and fear for his safety in how his parents behaved towards him.

I also really liked the use of different styles, more realistic or cartoonish depending on the mood of the scene.

Autobiografia z historią w tle. Jak zostać rysownikiem w kraju, który przechodził tyle przemian ustrojowych i społecznych - w Turcji. Na dodatek rysownikiem w lewicowych gazetach satyrycznych

Doceniam, że autor jest gotów przedstawić się z negatywnej strony. Na przykład, gdy porzucił dziewczynę, która pomogła mu w karierze i kochała go bezinteresownie, dla adoracji innych dziewczyn, które interesowały się nim ze względu na sławę. Albo gdy narażał bezpieczeństwo rodziców i przez długi czas nie wyprowadzał się od nich, mimo otrzymywanych pogróżek. Trzeba nabrać dystansu, by tak otwarcie mówić o błędach młodości.

Komiks ciekawy, głównie przez pryzmat opisywanych okoliczności.

Якогось багато досвіду читання автобіографічних коміксів у мене немає. На думку спадають лише «Персеполіс» Маржам Сатрапі та «Батьківщина» Ніни Бунєвац. Звісно, у цьому жанрі є ще інші перекладені українською мовою комікси, але руки до них ще поки не дійшли. Бандесіне «Тривожний вісник Стамбула» Ерсіна Карабулута, мабуть, зацікавив більше своїм малюнком, аніж біографією автора, про якого узагалі не чув. Все виявилося цікавішим, аніж гадав. А тепер розповідаю про нього й вам.

Ерсін Карабулут завжди захоплювався коміксами, особливо такими, герої яких були частиною його повсякденного життя, як турецького підлітка. Батьки сподівалися, що син стане інженером, але він мріяв лише про малювання. Його батько, вчитель, як і його мати, час від часу малював невеликі малюнки на замовлення, щоб допомогти родині звести кінці з кінцями. Тож Ерсін ріс в оточенні батькових фарб та олівців. У підлітковому віці його віддали до престижної школи в Стамбулі, яка знаходилася далеко від дому. Він ненавидів усе в ній: віддаленість, поведінку інших учнів, суворість й жорстокість вчителів. Але саме там він зустрів Тейлана, хлопчика, який поділяв його пристрасть до коміксів. Разом вони малювали і мріяли про публікацію своїх робіт.

Уже в дорослішому віці Ерсіну вдалося нав’язати батькам свій вибір професії: він буде художником, а не інженером. Батько неохоче погодився, але змусив його пообіцяти, що він ніколи не малюватиме для політичних журналів. Ерсін не розумів занепокоєння батька, адже в Туреччині карикатуристів і художників не переслідували за їхні роботи. Ерсін Карабулут розповідає нам про свою юність і перші кроки у світі турецьких коміксів. У цей же час країна стає жертвою екстремістів і поступово тоне в обмеженні прав і свобод людей. А через кілька років, коли до влади прийшов Ердоґан, усе узагалі докорінно змінилося. Бути художником або продовжувати ним бути в тогочасних журналах стало не просто вибором кар’єри, а політичним вибором. А за свободу слова тепер постійно потрібно боротися.

Як уже зрозуміло, бандесіне є також цікавим своїм соціально-політичним контекстом. Українці мало що знають про кар’єру Ердоґана та події, які відбувалися в той час. І ця автобіографія трішки привідкриє нам деталей про це. Бандесіне розповідає про специфіку економічної столиці країни, де є "вестернізована" частина та частина зі старими звичаями. Це також історія про боротьбу консервативної та релігійної частини населення, про порушення балансу, який дозволяв нації вистояти після падіння Османської імперії.

Ми бачимо, як юний Ерсін поступово відокремлює себе від стурбованої ментальності своїх батьків, світських вчителів, травмованих першими днями спілкування з ісламістською мафією і переконаних у тому, що вони не повинні піднімати шум, щоб не накликати на себе гнів поганих хлопців. Навпаки, автор буде емансипувати себе через малювання, засіб, який дозволить йому відкрити для себе інший турецький світ, той, який більше відповідає йому і якого він не знав.

Художній стиль автора може вас насторожити через зображення обличь героїв. Але не дивно чому він саме такий, адже Ерсін малював для журналів саме карикатури. Як результат, такий стиль персонажів переїхав у мальовані історії створені ним. Водночас художник уважний до навколишніх деталей, що формує досить цікавий досвід читання. І постійно виникає бажання зупинятися на сторінках та розглядати малюнок більш уважніше.

Альбом вийшов досить збалансованим на мою думку. Маємо драму, історію Туреччини, автобіографію, гарний малюнок, що зробило цю історію, яка сподобається широкій аудиторії.

Тривожний вісник Стамбула Ерсіна Карабулута був доволі цікавий автобіографічний комікс. Як і коміксно, так і історично.

Дуже сподобалось як Ерсін зробив цей комікс. Перша історія розказує про маленького хлопчика, який живе з батьками, та поступово торує свій шлях до мрії бути коміксистом. По ранній підробіток в журналах та в роботі над саркастичним журналом Penguen. Особливо сподобались моменти з пробиванням четвертої стіни.

Друга ж історія розказує паралельно про історію Туреччини від 70х до 2007? Неймовірно цікаво було читати про боротьбу лівих та правих сил. Прихід до влади Ердогана. Загалом мало знав та й знаю про цю тему. І, як не дивно, як вона місцями зараз рефлексує.

І синергія цих двох історій і складає захоплюючий комікс. Ерсін як карикатурист вдало контрастує між гумором та серйозністю. Через що комікс читається дуже легко.

Але після коміксу одразу поліз дивитись що ще є цікавого в автора. Щоб може потім якось собі придивитись та можливо почитати/послухати більше інтерв'ю про автора.

je trouve le dessin hyper déroutant. les personnages posés l'un à côté de l'autre peuvent être assez réalistes comme complètement caricaturés, avec une appétence particulière pour les dents qui dépassent, avec une mise en couleur extrêmement quali qui a beaucoup de profondeur. je suis assez perturbé par les catégories de personnages qu'il dessine beaux (son père, les femmes qu'il fréquente, les personnages qui représentent une autorité dépeinte comme respectable) ou moches (ses amis et lui, les passants, les extrémistes)
c'est en tout cas un témoignage de première main très précieux par sa précision et sa sincérité, tout en étant assez drôle dans son rapport à l'imaginaire. j'apprécie particulièrement la façon dont il parle de sa politisation et son parcours pour devenir dessinateur de presse.

Une BD longueur de bain sans mousse, un genre d’univers Charlie Hebdo version turque sur fond de montée d’Erdogan. Bien hâte de lire la suite, et de voir ce qui se passera en Turquie dans les prochaines semaines / mois avec les manifs et l’arrestation du maire d’Instanbul, hâte / apeurée de voir jusqu’où ça ira 😳

Je m'attendais à un nouveau "Arabe du futur" mais je dois admettre que c'est pas du tout la même chose. Dans journal inquiet d'Instanbul on suit la jeunesse jusqu'à la vie adulte d'Ersin. Ersin a sa vie très influencée par les régimes politiques de son pays et par la culture de sa famille. Jusqu'au moment où il décide d'être l'heros qu'il a toujours vu dans BD's et de prendre en main son futur.

Décembre 2023. Je ne connaissais rien de la Turquie. C’est une incursion franchement enrichissante de le faire par le biais de ce récit autobiographique.
Ça remet en perspective les aléas de ma vie professionnelle (et de ma vie tout court dans une certaine mesure). Beaucoup de passages m’ont ébranlée.
Le travail artistique m’a plu. Les choix scénaristiques et le découpage aussi. Je mets Ersin dans les bédéistes à suivre.

Частину свого життя я провела у Стамбулі, і це чудова частина. Я дуже полюбила місто. Таке величне, таке гарне!.. Зі своїм фірмовим повітрям. Таке, як тільки там. Виходиш з літака, робиш вдих — і ось воно, стамбульське. Таке легке-легке. З нотками моря і мийних засобів.

Ось я після робочого дня виходжу з офісу, і мені треба йти до зупинки. Вона на самому березі Босфору, і у ресторанчиках поруч смажать щойно виловлену з Босфору рибу, і так смачно пахне — рибою, морем і трошки цибулею, що можна захлинутися слиною. Я знаю, що у трамваї буде багато людей, бо це година пік, і якщо на мені сукня і підбори, то хтось із чоловіків обов’язково поступиться місцем. А якщо балетки і штани, то ні.

Страшенна спека, але вона мене не зупинить, і я у свої вихідні встигну побувати у всіх-всіх-всіх музеях і інших туристичних місцях.

Страшні затори, і буває, що подорож містом триває три години у один бік, але це теж нікого не зупиняє. Після роботи я часто бачуся з друзями. Всі втомлені, але ми знаходимо час одне для одного. Бо спілкування і оце “бути разом” тут має значення.

Мені не завжди зрозуміло, що відбувається. Час від часу я потрапляю у незручні ситуації, але вони закінчуються тим, що мені хтось допомагає, а потім я переповідаю історію друзям і ми сміємося. Ще мені зовсім нічого не зрозуміло про політику, але я помічаю, що усі-усі-усі люди дуже нею переймаються і уважно слідкують за новинами, газетами, законами, змінами у владі.

Люди тут дуже працьовиті. Дуже охайні. Вони інколи з ностальгією говорять про “старі часи”, але тут складно зрозуміти, про наскільки старі часи йдеться. Незручно перепитувати.

Це було давно, я ще була студенткою. Потім життя закрутилось у мене в інший бік, але Стамбул і свої спогади про нього я все ще дуже люблю.

І тут я заходжу у книгарню у Львові і раптом бачу скарб!

“Тривожний вісник Стамбула. Том 1”, Ерсін Карабулут.

Комікс про Стамбул. Про ті самі старі, але не дуже старі часи. Ось ця вся атмосфера, вулички, квартали, їжа, люди, спілкування… Як намальовано! Душа співає! Схопила, купила! А яка цікава історія! Якраз пояснює, чому турки так уважно ставляться до політики, які події змінили Туреччину, як велося інтелігенції... Про боротьбу з авторитаризмом. Дуже цікаво, дуже важливо. Купа відповідей на питання, які крутилися у мене в голові ще зі студентських часів.

На книжці написано, що це том перший. А де ж другий? Перевернула догори дригом увесь Інтернет, переконалась, що ще немає, не видавали, не перекладали. Але планується, буде. Як чемна фанатка, сиджу, чекаю на продовження.

І тут автор узяв і зашкварився. Попри свої демократичні цінності. Тепер у нас його видавати не будуть.

Він щось таке нібито пояснював, що мистецтво поза політикою... Але ж його книжка (і вся діяльність загалом) якраз про взаємозв'язок мистецтва і політики.

Складно зрозуміти… Дуже складно…

Interesting that Turkey had a comic culture and political comics culture. Or at least had one 10-20 years ago I don't know how strong it is now. This book is a great little exploration of Turkey from the point of view of a kid who becomes a semi-famous artist mainly interested in getting with women and even dumps his girlfriend once a hotter chick hits on him yet we never see him hook up with anyone else. I like the story, I adore the political stuff, I love the history lessons, drawings are strong, colors vivid, storytelling on point. And it's seemingly a true story?

It revolves around Turkey and how the left and right clashed and then Erdogan became mayor of Istanbul as people were tired of both the political sides. He also got a 4 month prison sentence for being a radical Muslim reading a poem about conducting an Islamic war. Which made him extremely popular. Initially claimed he was reformed then over time became more extremist as everyone knew he was.

Only issue is that it stops in the past. He just finishes the story and doesn't really write about who Erdogan fully became. We just see him lose a lawsuit against the comic book and then nothing else is shown. So it feels unfinished as Erdogan is still in power. It's a curious book that gives me hope for these liberal pro democracy writers in Turkey. I have some issues with how the writer was radically protesting pro radical Muslims rights yet now they are in power so what? How are you going to get rid of them after allowing them to speak, take power, and abuse power? In theory these moral concepts are nice. But unless Erdogan loses some election and leaves power how are you going to tell me your political concepts of unlimited free speech are correct? The author was mainly protesting pro Muslims. He never once here protested pro secularists. Not a single Muhammed drawing or mocking of Islam in any way so is he truly free speech in every way? I highly doubt that. But since he never fully explores his own politics, and claims he's ignorant on this, it becomes acceptable. It's just weird how many times he defended Islamists here. Maybe he's afraid of them and Erdogan today? The free speech issue became a thing when they drew Erdogan as a cat and he sued them. It's highly illegal in Turkey today. Yet the comic book doesn't show us more we only have this issue. I would love a comic book telling us how Erdogan got all his power and how he abused it.

I would have loved it to be longer and contain more politics. It's only 2 books. And a third book would be too early right now as Erdogan is still in power. But with the new mass protests maybe something can change. Frankly, it's a very short read. But everything is cleverly set up and the story is enticing.

3.75 stars: Drawing on the Edge is an absorbing memoir, retelling the author's childhood and early years as a cartoonist. What I really like about comics and graphic novels is the fact that they are an excellent way for readers to learn about topics they might otherwise not go for, the visual form fortunately making unfamiliar subjects and/or difficult matters a lot more accessible. Such is definitely the case here with Karabulut's book, delving into the author's early life while also shedding light on the larger political and social context of the Turkish backdrop, the personal and political inexplicably intertwined, impossible to exist without affecting the other.

I like that the book manages to retain its humorous voice despite the heavy, high-stakes atmosphere of its setting, one with intimidation, censorship, religious zealotry, and historical unbridled violence. Karabulut's dreams and everyday life can be a respite from the political backdrop of Turkey, despite also being inevitably impacted by it in turn. The joy from being completely absorbed in a personal passion like art, excitement over the most meager interactions with his cartoonist idols, spontaneity of school shenanigans that are depiected are relatable and oft humorous.

Aside from being able to talk about Turkish political and social happenings in a flowing and easily comprehensible way without info-dumping, what I most like about the book is its emotional core, especially scenes with the author and his comics characters, deeply touching in its illustration of dreams let go and achieved, the power of the latter in not only inspiring Karabulut but also allowing him to inspire others, which the last chapter superbly demonstrates.

The art is great, with the author slightly modifying the style to best fit each scene. Scenic illustrations can be stunning, especially those of Beyoglu, and characters move seamlessly. I have nothing much to say because the art works really well with the story without ever being a distraction. All in all, this is a great, informational and even touching autobiographical book, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the next volume.

Graphic Memoirs are my jam. I love a good graphic novel that is a true story about the author's life. I I especially love it when they are about people that I don't know, history that I don't know, and countries or cultures that I don't know much about.

This graphic memoir is about Ersin Karabulut and his life growing up in Istanbul, Turkey. Growing up, he was a big fan of comics. His parents were teachers. On the side, his Dad was an artist so that he could make extra money. Life was not easy for Ersin's family. It was made more difficult by the political/religious unrest that was happening at that time. The political climate in Turkey is the background for the entire book and plays a big role in the decisions that Ersin made throughout the book. Ersin had always wanted to be an artist that made comics. The road was not easy. Since we are reading his book in comic form, we know that he makes it as a comic artist. I was not familiar with Ersin or his comics prior to reading this so the content was all new. You don't need any prior knowledge of him to get into the book.

What I really liked about this graphic novel was the opportunity to learn a lot about Turkey and what was going on during the time that Ersin was growing up (Erdogan's rise to power and before). We meet Ersin when he is in grade school. The book takes us through age 23. I also liked how honest and open Ersin was about himself. Sometimes people only write about themselves in positive ways. Ersin was truthful about things and it didn't always put himself in a positive light. I like that he was real. The feelings he had and the choices he made were relatable because they were real.

I highly recommend this to anyone that wants to know more about life from a different perspective. I think it's acceptable for older high school students, young adults, and adults. One thing I love about graphic novels as an art form is that I do a first read for content. I want to know what is going to happen. I do a second read for all of the things I missed. I am eager to read this a second time.
