Out of options and on the run after her psychotic father’s released from prison, Kit Parson heads to the only place she might be safe from him, the Maw of Mayhem MC. The unexpected move buys her time, but also puts her at risk. Surrounded by shifters, her inner cat begs to be released, and after witnessing a brutal attack on her mother as a child, she refuses to let the monster out. Totally doable, provided no bodily fluids are ever exchanged.

That takes the MC’s hot-as-hell VP, Grimdarke James, officially off the table. Mourning the recent murder of the club’s alpha and struggling to control his inner cat, the tattooed Viking god is on thin ice. If he goes feral again, he’ll be put down. Which makes his cat’s insistence that Kit belongs to him problematic, upsetting the delicate balance of the MC’s internal politics, and the woman blackmailing Grim.

But when Kit’s father catches up with her, Grim has no choice but to trust his cat, and Kit can’t deny their chemistry. Can they hold on to each other when everything is trying to tear them apart? After a gruesome triple murder propels them deeper into the paranormal world, they find themselves with unlikely allies, even as their enemies threaten to destroy everything they hold dear.

Listen. I cracked this open not knowing what the hell I was getting into and next thing I knew, I was side-eyeing my Kindle like, wait… this is kinda… wtf is happening? Yea…. I’m invested.. 100% invested….

Now, it took a minute to get into the writing style—because we’re talking inner beast POV, and these shifters be out here like “the two-legs doesn’t understand” while having full-blown internal conversations with their human half. So yeah, it’s giving grr meets sass, and I wasn’t sure at first. But by chapter two? I was in.

What blew me away the most wasn’t even the spice (though we’ll get to that in a second). It was the communication. Like, big-kid convo. Feelings were felt. Secrets were shared. Nobody threw a tantrum or walked away in dramatic third-act fashion. They ADULTED. I about cried.

The pacing is fast as hell—in the best way. No long-winded worldbuilding, no 10 pages of flower descriptions. Just plot. Action. Mystery. MC drama. Paranormal chaos. And just when I was about to be like “ugh if we don’t get an answer soon…” BAM. Answered. Next.

And now… the smut.
While it’s not a full-on smutfest, the scenes that are here? Drool-worthy. Like… grab-a-towel delicious. The chemistry is on fire and the tension builds exactly right. If this book ever gets a duet audio version? Baby. Cancel my weekend plans. It would be phenomenal.

We’ve also got a big ol’ dose of political debauchery. Power struggles. Control grabs. Factions ready to burn shit down. Every species is out for themselves and you can feel the tension brewing. It’s setting up for something big, and I’m already picking sides like I’m at a supernatural Hunger Games.

We’ve got witches, shifters, vampires, and a motorcycle club all in one universe—and it works. It’s got fated mates, trauma, danger, and a twisty little cliffhanger that had me whispering “AYO WHAT.”

This isn’t the wettest book I’ve ever read, but it absolutely scratched the smutty itch I didn’t know needed scratching—with a damn good story to back it up.

Will I keep reading? Absolutely. Do I need to go sit in a corner and unpack that ending? Maybe.
This was a rock-solid 3.25-star read and a killer start to a series that clearly knows how to grip you and not let go.

I devoured this book, it took me a second to get the dialogue between the shifters but once I did it made it some much better. I could hear the banter and conversations and it just made the story more enjoyable in my opinion. I loved the merging of MC and shifter romance, it gave a sons of anarchy vibe that I want more of.

This first installment is a dark, and gritty shifter MC tale that was hard to get into. It takes reading a while before the essence of the story is revealed. Then comes the cliffhanger. It will be interesting to get into the next installment to follow the antics of Grim, Kit, and the MC.

Ugh

Ends on a cliffhanger, which I absolutely hate. This book sounded so good and I liked the characters. First book that I have read by this author. The book was pretty good, but no notice of a cliffhanger. Ugh!!

Could not put it down. Action packed in ALL OF THE WAYS 🧯🧯

AK Nevermore’s style of writing is so easy - you feel connected to the characrers, and it moves fast without skipping the details.

This is so good I finished it in one day. It ends not abruptly - it was actually a brilliant place to take a break in the story - but enough of a cliff hanger that I can’t wait for the next one!

Grimdarke by AK Nevermore is the first in their Maw of Mayhem MC paranormal romance series. This book combines two wildly popular romance subgenres, big cat shifter and motorcycle club romance. If you are a fan of Eva Chase’s The Blood Brotherhood, you will love the Maw of Mayhem. With vampires, witches, and cat shifters, Grimdarke will delight urban fantasy fans.

What I loved the most were the colorful characters in the motorcycle club. Each member of the cat-shifting club is vividly depicted with complex relationships and backstories. I loved Stitch’s fatherly nature, the banter between Wrench and Deuce, and the gullible prospects. The playful ribbing and camaraderie are my favorite parts of motorcycle club romances. Grimdarke shows the reader where the members stand in the club’s hierarchy through their interactions. It also shows the tension between the club bunnies and ol’ladies (also cat shifters). The tension comes from Grimdarke’s quasi-girlfriend Nikki who is the type of villain a reader loves to hate.

AK Nevermore’s shifters are full animal shifters. The characters are physically in cat form or human form. There isn’t partial shifting beyond the pupils of their eyes elongating. Mentally, the two personas share the shifter’s mind. While most of the shifters have a symbiosis with their inner cat and the two halves work together to survive, Grim’s cat, Darke, is at odds with his human counterpart. I loved their arguing and fighting for control of their physical body. I laughed out loud when Kit (the heroine) would call out Grim for arguing with Darke instead of paying attention to her. I’ve never read a character noticing the long pauses where a shifter mentally argues with themselves. As a longtime fan of shifter romance, I found this hilarious.

Kit’s an accountant by day and a stripper by night (a well-thought-out allegory to her shifter connection), living in the city as a human. She grew up adjacent to the shifter groups but is determined to live as a regular person. Kit is a down-to-earth heroine who I would want as a best friend. By the end of the book, you find that she has some connection to every paranormal sect, making her the hearthstone to the civil unrest. (No spoilers so you will have to figure out those relationships yourself.)

Overall, I highly recommend Grimdarke to urban fantasy fans or fans of motorcycle club romance who are looking for a spicy, gritty romance in a complex network of paranormal society. I would warn the reader of graphic language, blood violence, blazing hot spicy scenes, and an abrupt cliffhanger ending. I can’t wait for the next installment of this fantastic series.

My Rating: 5++ stars

I rarely read MF romance (and even more rarely read MF erotica), but this book by AK Nevermore was so good, I freaking devoured it.

Kit's desperate to find refuge after her POS father's release from jail. The guy is heinous--he beat the crap out of Kit's mother, and she's terrified he's coming after her. The only place she has left to go is the motorcycle club Maw of Mayhem. There, she meets Grimdarke, the "tall drink of Viking god" VP of the club who can't let his shifter cat out lest he go feral and be put down.

True to the author's style, there are layers upon layers of conflict, and the world building is top notch. Just when everything seemed to be resolved, another plot twist reared its head, and I'd mutter to myself, "oh crap," while reading. But my favorite part of all was the heroine, Kit--she's gritty, foul-mouthed, and a total bada**. Too many romance books IMO have female main characters who depend on their male counterpart after just a few pages, but, man, Kit can hold her own. I'd seriously want to be her friend just to sh*t-talk with her.

I cannot stress enough how the last few chapters kept me (literally) on the edge of my seat. Not to give anything away here, so in the vaguest terms, the last plot twist in the book had me freaking floored.

Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I received an ARC from the publisher, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The beginning of this book is very confusing. It just feels like it is abit all over the place, I feel like I've come into the story but missed the first few chapters or something.

Because of this, I almost stopped reading it, but decided to keep going since I bought it. It felt like there was a lot of information was missing that the reader needs to understand better to get into the story. This was my first MC story, so there was some lingo I didn't completely understand, but started to piece together, but that lack of character development made it difficult to get into the story.

With that said, this book contains some of the HOTTEST scenes I've ever read! Or maybe Grim just does it for me. ♨️🌶🔥 The connection feels like it goes from zero to 60 in a blink, which felt a bit odd, but I decided to attribute that to an animal thing. So I kept reading . . .

After reading this book, I discovered there is a .5 in the series. I was hoping might clear up some of the story character development for me, but the reviews of it have me questioning if that will be the case. I also see book 2 in the series is in the works, I really hope some the story line gets smoothed out. It feels like you need someone, your editor/publisher or a friend, to provide you with an assist in sorting out your thoughts. Maybe you have too much of the story in your head and it isn't translating onto the page as well as it could. I think there is a great story in here, just give us a little more plot/character information. Just don't change your hot sex scene writing parts. 😺🥵😼

Heat Factor: It’s got some very gritty, sloppy heat

Character Chemistry: Fated mates, insta-love

Plot: Grim’s dad/head of the motorcycle club is murdered and right on the cusp of Grim’s ascension to the head of their MC, Kit, daughter of their rival and under the protection of Grim’s father, appears, Grim decides she’s his mate, and everything is thrown into chaos

Overall: There’s a lot of complicated political dynamics thrown at you right off the bat and if you’re not into really gritty/dirty dynamics this won’t be for you, but if you like MC/paranormal/thriller vibes you may really enjoy this.

He’s not just alpha—he’s annihilation. And I loved every second of it.

Grimdarke is what happens when a feral lion shifter with rage issues meets the one woman who can survive the storm—and maybe burn down the whole damn MC doing it.

Kit is on the run, hiding scars and secrets. Grim? He’s the VP of a shifter motorcycle club and one growl away from snapping the leash on his inner beast. The second his cat smells her? It’s mate or mayhem. (Spoiler: it's both.)

This book is pure dark romance chaos in the best possible way:
🖤 Growly, possessive, alpha male with a tragic backstory? Check.
🔥 A heroine who’s been broken but never bowed? Check.
🐾 Shifter heat, MC danger, brutal loyalty, and just enough tenderness to make you sob between the spice? Yes please.

Also: the tension?? The biting?? The unapologetic claiming??? This man does not ask for permission, and I respect that level of emotional damage.

She was his. Not because she wanted to be. Not because she asked. Because the wild in him knew—and wouldn’t let her go.

"If you don't hurry up and f*ck me, I'm gonna beat the shit out of you, Grimdarke
James."
"As my queen commands."

If you like your romance with teeth, your men a little unhinged, and your plots full of blackmail, murder, and found-family biker bonds—Grimdarke will absolutely wreck you

Thank you so much to AK Nevermore for giving me a review copy of Grimdarke, I absolutely loved it!

I haven’t read a shifter paranormal romance in a while and I love them so when this popped up I couldn’t wait to get into it, and it fit every tick box for me within this category.

This is book 1 in a series where we follow Kit and Grim. Grim is a cat shifter who has to witness the murder of his MC club president, now leaving him in line to take over. Kit is looking for protection and doesn’t know anywhere else to go but the MC, she is running from her father, who happens to be the man who abused Grim.

This has all the elements of a paranormal romance that I love and need, insta lust/love, marking, breeding, mates and the jealous woman who wants the club crown.

I really enjoyed the paranormal creature elements to this, and how the shifter MCs are a part of the larger political paranormal picture.

The end of this has left me so excited to see what comes next!

Are you looking for that book that makes you think? That is different then anything you have read before? That leaves you asking yourself, what the hell did I just read ( In a good way)? Then you really need to read this story. The author has done an awe inspiring job of writing a shifter story unlike any you have read before. The characters are interesting and there will be times that you ask yourself, do I really like this character? Be patient it all comes together and you will fall in love with each of them.
From the start of the story you are asking yourself, did that really just happen? Kit and Grim are complicated, but enjoyable characters that from the beginning you know they belong together. Though it is a long, hard journey to get there.
If this has caught your attention, then go grab this story and enjoy the read!

I needed some Grim in my life and I cannot wait to read the rest of this series!! 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞 is Book 1 in the 𝐌𝐚𝐰 𝐨𝐟 𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐡𝐞𝐦 Series.

Kit and Grim sank their claws into me in chapter one and didn’t let go. They are fated but fucked up, Grimdarke is unapologetically morally grey, even though he has a soft side for Kit and she is a little firecracker who just needs some love (and a crown 👑). Their chemistry from the beginning was fire but the slow burn had me ready to slam both of their heads together 😂.

This is a dark, magnetic, magical tale full of shifters, vampires, and witches, but we don’t get to the vampires & witches til much later in the story. It’s a rival MC story but add magic - the writing was moody, immersive, and addictive.

If you love dark worlds, morally grey men, and feeling like you’ve been dragged through an emotional battle in the best way, this one is a must read.

Kit has been trying to avoid her past for so long and unfortunately that doesn’t always work out. She ends up having to go back to where she grew up to look for help. Her plan is to be there for as little time as possible and go back to her life in the city. She wants nothing to do with shifters and bikers in general. Wellllllllll Grim and his cat have other plans and throw a wrench right in hers. The banter in this between the two of them had me cackling at times. She gives it back to him like it’s as natural as breathing and I ate that up. There’s so much that goes on in this book that I feel like we’ve barely pulled that thread to unravel the real story behind why everything is happening.

Great start for this series: MC, shifters, witches, and vampires to keep everything at a constant battle. Kit is half human and half shifter: she’s very feisty, suspicious, and has no interest whatsoever in ever shifting. Grimdarke is so OTT sexy that he creates some doubt in Kit’s mind: he thinks she’s his mate, but there’s controversy with his MC not accepting her. Their banter is just as much fun as the banter between Grim and his cat. So much attitude! There’s drama, tragedy, and lots of unfinished business at the end so I can’t wait for the next book!.

This is a fab continuation of the prequel and is quite gritty and action packed. Kit and Grim are complicated characters and the author did a fab job layering a complex plot to fully suck you in. Grim and Kit have witty banter that's really fun, but he also has banter with his inner cat. So much catitude. Lol! Expect a wild reading ride as they deal with drama, tragedy, twists and steam. There's more to come, though, so you can also expect a cliffy ending that will have you panting for the next book. Thankfully, it's out already and I'm off to see how things continue to unfold. Good fun!

This is a full-length novel with a lot of twists and turns I didn't see coming. It kept me completely engrossed till the end. There is a lot of drama, but it makes the book great. Kit is looking for safety, and she turns to the Maw of Mayhem MC. She has many internal conflicts and has to work through incredible difficulties. Grim has a connection with her, and they are both shifters. I loved the shifter aspect of this book. I don't want to give away any spoilers. This book is intense. It does end on a cliffhanger. I do recommend it, and it's a great book!

Better the longer you read.

It took me a while to get into the story. I felt like I did not understand the back story and I was confused about the characters. It became clearer as the story progressed. The last few chapters were fun and more interesting characters were introduced at the Moot. Then just as I was interested in reading more, the book ended with a cliff hanger. I was not happy with that. We will see if I read the next book.

This is a new to me author, and I will definitely be reading more of her work! The characters were well developed in the storyline was intriguing, exciting and suspenseful. This book kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, and my heart pounding. The story pulls you into the world of Grim and Kit. The banter between the two is out of this world and the spice level too. There is danger, mystery, and lots of unfinished business surrounding these two. I can’t wait for the series to continue!!

Grimdarke is the first book I've read by A.K. Nevermore and now every book is on my TBR

I love urban fantasy so much and this one did not disappoint!

I've read a lot of shifter, fated mate, and urban fantasy books but this one is so much different than any other book I've read. I was sucked in from the beginning.

With so much drama, tragedy, twists, and spice this is a book a wish I could read for the first time again!

I cannot wait to read more from the Maw of Mayhem MC

The technical aspects of this author's writing was first class. The imagery was vivid and bold. There's a line -- not plot significant and yet it stays with me -- about how a slice of lasagna was thicker than a bible. (She didn't use the word "was"...) For the first book in a new series, it's definitely full of surprises to keep one reading.

What a wild ride! A gritty tale with a definite bad boy. The heroine kicked butt. So well written I devoured it in one sitting. The writing style is so descriptive you get a real sense of being there. I had a few "ick" moments, but overall I loved this story and can't wait to read another of this author's books.

This book is the start of the series after the prequel. Kit is given a bigger role in this one after meeting her in the Maw of Mayhem. I enjoyed her character as she flees the city in search of the MoM with a promise that MK will take care of her. Instead, she meets something awful that I won’t elaborate on or I’ll spoil it for the other readers.

I haven't read a lot of shifter books so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the characters and the plot drew me in from the start. It took a minute to understand the inner dialogue with the cat, but once I did and they got into tiffs and power struggles it was kind of hilarious. Grim is just... wow. Very hot sex scenes and great chemistry with Kit. Now I have to read the next one!
