I've given up on this series already, but since the second part of this story is coming out on Monday, I've decided to dive in again.
🟢 A wealthy, a bit eccentric Lord/a bricklayer (in disguise) 🔵 Age gap 27/32 🟣 Size difference (the younger Lord is taller and broader) 🟢 Both gay 🟡 An interesting start, but soon fizzles out 🟠 Timespan - 6 months 🌶️ Some sex on-page; short oral, one penetrative scene; t/b
This is a pretty short story that lays out the foundation for the big turnaround in the next installment.
Sam, the bricklayer on Grey's uncle's estate, is actually, apparently, a spy. Don't ask me why, it's pretty typical of this author to do the most unexpected and unwanted spin in a story that could've been just a simple, nice regency romance.
In this book we get a very promising beginning of Sam and Grey finding each other and somehow finding a way to live together, having an affair where we completely skip 6 months until the end where not much is said about them at all, so - so much for that foundation.
I really did expect more. Sam is presented as someone who's too educated or maybe even refined for physical labor, but then again he's also simple and emotional, so there's much more to him than whatever it is he's doing right now in Grey's home.
Not to mention Grey - a completely interesting, fascinating character, yet not much is said about him at all. He gets a couple of seconds of page time, just so you'll get your hopes up and then it's over and done with.
I expected more of their relationship development on-page, more moments together, more background on both, at least some feelings evolving, some domesticity? Sharing moments together on the estate? Nothing. Not a damn thing.
The story really did start out so, so promising.
I'm not expecting much going forward. My prediction is there'll be a lot of everything else but them on-page in the next book. Twists and turns we don't need. Or want.
I never/rarely give five stars for a cliffhanger, especially when I turn the page and fall off the cliff when I see ‘The End.’ I’m hooked! When does the book come out for which this novelette is a prequel, as the authors mention in the endnotes? This historical was super hot! The characters had depth and that made them more attractive. There are detailed descriptions of Greyson and Sam and of their lovemaking. All appreciated! The writing was clear with good word choices. The idea that Sam has a secret background was subtly written. The class distinctions are woven into the story very well, too. How can a Lord and a laborer have a HEA? I will be waiting to find out!
I read the blurb and there was no mention of this being a cliffhanger. So I was expecting a complete short story. It’s not. Sometimes I just want an easy quick read. Warn a sister.
That aside, it was nice, minus the cliffhanger. So I’ll just imagine a better ending.
Lord Greyson Montague’s father, Lord Flakenham had warned him, never get involved with those below your station.
Greyson was not only the biological heir of his father, but the heir of his Uncle also. The uncle had no children and as they had left Wiltshire and moved to Bath, Grey has taken as overseer of Longdale House.
Grey could not resist watching the “bricklayer”. He could see the man’s strength but also his intelligence in the way he worked. Grey went to the worksite everyday, not just to monitor the progress of the deteriorating bridge, that connected the estate to the island. He was in charge of his father’s upcoming marriage and hoped that the bridge would be done on time.
Sam Martin also, was well aware of the “Ghost”. He watched the gloomy young man that never smiled and had already given him a nickname “Ghost”. He would sneak looks at Ghost anytime he was in the vicinity of the worksite. He often wondered what this young man had been through that he never smiled. Sam at thirty-two, thought Ghost to be much younger even with his silver hair. The young Ghost was not overly attractive but worth being admired and Sam admired him often.
As he observed “his Ghost” talking with Foreman Adams, he could tell Ghost was not happy about the conversation. Sam worked his plan and approached the two men. He asked the foreman to check his area he’d been working on, but keeps his eyes on Ghost. Here was Greyson’s chance to enact his own plan. He consults Sam on the state of chimney repair. They make plans for Sam to come to the estate to check on the conditions of the chimney’s.
As Grey and Sam become involved, Sam is offered not only six months of work but an attic room that was accessible to Grey’s room. Sam could not be contented more with his situation and his lover. He even has a surprise for Greyson. But Sam worries at some of the vulnerable acts Grey offered. A special invitation had come from Greyson, to have Sam as server at the evening dinner. Sam is suspicious? Would Greyson deliver an ultimatum, want to know more of Sam, or forced to leave?
Stephanie Lake does it again and brings historical London in 1807 with “His Grey Lord” of “The Regency Lord” series. The author doesn’t waiver and continues with her mesmerizing writing and descriptions of the era. The two characters: Lord Greyson Montague and Samuel Martin come from different status, but they make a connection. Greyson is somewhat mysterious and Sam is more carefree. Together they share feelings and very steamy moments. But Sam will find time to become suspicious.
I highly recommend “His Grey Lord” of “The Regency Lord” series by Stephanie Lake. With this steamy love affair comes a mystery and it will continue with “The Grey Lord’s Man” coming soon.
I love to now and then go back to what used to read exclusively, historically set MM romance, sadly this one, as lovely and sexy as it was, proved very short, over just as it was becoming so very enjoyable. But, never fear, the author hints at this one being a kind of prequel and another tale is in the works, I very much look forward to it.
I have no clue what's happening here. Apparently, it's book 7 in some series (which makes sense, because I feel absolutely lost here), but I can't find the series page with all books properly lined up. Not only that, but this book just ends right in the middle of things. A mess.
Going to find the next installment and try to figure out what is going on. Will report back.
