Rate this book
Though her heart longs for adventure, Elise strives to be a perfect English lady within the stifling confines of society for the sake of her impressionable young son. Her quiet world is shattered when she meets the impulsive and scandalous Jared Amesbury. His roguish charm awakens her yearning for adventure. But his irrepressible grin and sea-green eyes hide a secret. A gentleman by day, a pirate by night, Jared must complete one last assignment for the Secret Service before he can be truly free. I just finished the first book, The Stranger She Married, and immediately had to pick up this one. This was actually the first book I read by Donna Hatch and became an instant fan.

I really love this one, it was fun and adventurous. I really liked Elise and Jared. Elise is witty, brave and very ladylike. Jared brings out a different side in her and she does the same for him. He’s kind of a rake without really being a rake, which I liked. I really liked that he had a lot of respect for Elise and even though there was mutual attraction he was still a gentleman and I think it made their relationship stronger. There is a lot of chemistry between the two, and lots of kissing, but a really sweet romance.

I'm glad I decided to read it again (lost track how many times I've read it now), Hatch is a great writer, the story really flows, there are no lose ends and the characters are great. With both books in this series I was impressed with how Hatch portrayed marriage. It seems like sometimes in Regency novels marriage is almost looked on as a negative, in these books it shows that when you marry the right person how happy marriage can be.

I love the Amesbury family, they're always there for one another despite their differences. I like how over the course of the series they continue to grow closer. I look forward to reading Christian's book next and am trying to patiently wait for Grant's story as well as their two sisters.

Overall, a very fun regency!

Sigh. I haven't been this addicted to an author's writing since Marcia McClure. I've been sneaking downstairs after everyone's asleep and reading into the wee hours because I CANNOT STOP READING Donna Hatch. Even better? THIS ONE HAS PIRATES. I read Daphne Du Maurier's Frenchman's Creek as a teen and have been hooked on pirate stories ever since. And a clean Regency romance with steamy kisses AND pirates? Donna, it's like you read my mind.

More, Donna, please? How about Grant's and Christian's stories?

Ah, the Amesbury brothers. They are each lovable in their own way and make great romance heroes.

This is story features Jared and Elise. Jared is the second son who has lived the past three years as a pirate. There is a reason he was a pirate that makes sense as you read the book. He is a "noble" pirate of noble birth.

Elise is a widow who plans for her status to remain unchanged. She has an adorable son and is a devoted mother. Her life is turned upside down when Jared enters her social scene. He shows her that there is more life to be lead and the wonders of romance.

I loved the characters. They are good people with hopes and dreams. There path to finding happiness is rocky and there is some suspense. It makes for a fun and engaging book to read.

I had enjoyed Donna Hatch's debut historical romance, The Stranger She Married, so when she recently sent me a copy of the galley proofs for her brand new book, The Guise of a Gentleman, I was really looking forward to reading it. Now that I've finished it, I have to say that I liked it even more than the first book. In fact, I loved it. The Guise of a Gentleman sweeps the reader along in an almost epic journey that begins in the proper, quiet drawing rooms of country manor houses, then moves to a daring high-seas pirate adventure, and back to England for an intense, nail-biting climax followed by a sweet HEA. I was sucked right into the story in the first chapter when the heroine rescues the hero from certain death and he thanks her with a tender but searing kiss. Things slowed down a bit for me after that, with the plot following the couple around from one country party to the next as they get to know each other and their attraction builds. About a quarter of the way in though, I was hooked again, and by the time they set out to sea, I was utterly enthralled and at times reluctant to put the book down.

Jared has without a doubt earned a spot on my all-time favorite romance heroes list. From the moment he kissed Elise for the first time, I completely fell for him. Jared is an utterly charming, mischievous rogue, but at the same time, he plays the part of a proper gentleman to perfection. Underneath it all, he isn't quite the rake that he outwardly projects, which I loved. I thought this bit of his persona showed that in his heart he was looking for something special rather than just flitting from one ladies' bedchamber to another, although he certainly could have had his pick of female admirers if he'd wanted them. Jared was also a deeply tortured hero who was tormented by all the questionable things he'd done over the years as a pirate, even though they were for the greater good. At the same time, he showed a profound sense of honor by creating rules for his pirate crew that kept them in line and prevented even worse things from happening. He had also earned their complete trust and respect by being a strong leader, and even proved his loyalty to them unto death. Outwardly, Jared was strong and brave, but inwardly, he was lonely and broken, a man who wasn't even certain of who he was anymore. I adored how his real self naturally came out when he was in Elise's presence and he wasn't afraid to show her his vulnerabilities. The scene where he seeks out her comfort after a sad, upsetting event in his life was thoroughly beautiful. Jared was also great with kids, showing tender affection for Elise's young son, Colin and his cabin boy/tiger, Jose. I could very easily envision him being a fabulous father. Jared embodied all the qualities that I tend to love most in my romance heroes. I can't think of a thing about him that I didn't like, and he would be more than welcome to give me kissing lessons any day.;-)

Elise is a sweet, gentle heroine who can be brave and feisty when she needs to be. In many ways, she reminded me of the heroine from Lisa Kleypas' Where Dreams Begin. Elise was a widow who had barely come out of mourning for her late husband after five years, and was rather determined not to remarry. Her husband had been an extremely proper gentleman, not given to displays of affection and was actually downright prudish. Even after a few years of marriage and giving birth to a son, Elise is still pretty innocent. She had been content in her first marriage, but really didn't know what she was missing until an irrepressible rogue came along to steal her heart and teach her how to really live and love again. Elise was an intelligent, out-spoken woman with a repressed thirst for adventure. Jared really respected her for those things and his personality spoke to that hidden part of her. She is a wonderful, loving mother and a great friend. I liked Elise's courage and determination. She didn't allow fear and despair to overwhelm her and showed some backbone with her captors and even with Jared when she thought he'd duped her. However, she was a woman who simply couldn't ignore the cry of her heart and generously forgave Jared before she even knew the full truth about him, and was tenderhearted, offering him love and comfort when he needed it most. There were a few times in the early chapters when I thought that Elise protested her burgeoning feelings and mistrusted Jared's intentions toward her a bit too much, but overall, she was a well-rounded heroine who earned my respect and admiration.

Jared and Elise as a couple were absolutely wonderful. I really liked that they were both more average “middle class” type characters which is unusual for a historical romance. Jared was the second son of an earl, but his chosen profession made him equally, if not more, comfortable with the low-born as he was in higher social circles. I can't recall if it was specifically stated as to what Elise's first husband did for a living. They were wealthy enough to own a country estate and have servants, as well as have noble friends, but Elise was not of the nobility herself. The other thing I loved about Jared and Elise were their interactions. The author was able to create a thoroughly palpable and swoon-worthy connection between them with nothing more than looks, touches and passionate kisses, which is more than some authors can accomplish with pages of detailed love scenes. The Guise of a Gentleman is a very sweet romance that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend for mature teens and more sensitive readers, but at the same time, it contains some of the headiest non-explicit sensuality I've ever read. Even though I usually enjoy some steamy love scenes in my romances, Donna Hatch has definitely proven that a luscious, gratifying relationship can be built without them. If all sweet romances were written this beautifully, I'd probably read them more.

Believe it or not there were other things besides Jared and Elise that I enjoyed about this novel. From what I can tell, Ms. Hatch has done her research well and uses the historical details to really bring the setting to life. She is also very good at writing naturally flowing dialog punctuated with facial expression and gestures. I found some of the exchanges between the protagonists to be very lovely and poetic. In addition, there is a strong cast of secondary characters. Colin and Jose are both cute little boys who are rendered in a very age-appropriate way, and Jared and Elise's friends and Jared's crew members help to set the stage, and are appealing in their own way but never overpowering. The Guise of a Gentleman is the second book in the Rogue Hearts series, and readers get a visit with Jared's brother, Cole and his wife, Alicia from the first book, The Stranger She Married. More depth is added to their other two brothers, Grant and Christian, and I'm now officially intrigued by both and can't wait for their stories. The pace may have been a little slow in the beginning with a few rough edges that could have been smoothed out, and some repetition that hopefully will be cleaned up for the final copy, but nothing that particularly detracted from my enjoyment of the book. Overall, The Guise of a Gentleman was a swoon-worthy romance coupled with a thrilling adventure that has earned a spot on my keeper shelf.

Okay...book one was about one brother, book 2 is about another brother. There are two more brothers, so I'm hoping there are two more books.

This story is about Jared, who is/was a pirate. He rents a house for the summer and meets Elise, a widow who swears to remain single.

The romance is terrific, sweet, and clean, and the adventure is great fun--I was left hanging until almost the very end.

I really hope there are two more books in the Rogue Hearts series....

Oh my goodness, this book! I read it years ago, back when I was new to Goodreads and wasn't good at adding books here. This one definitely deserves 5 stars and a place in my ratings; the characters are still so clear in my mind today. Donna Hatch is a skilled romance writer, drawing the reader in as her lead characters triumph over real, relatable conflict. I plan to reread her Rogue Hearts novels, including her newest two I haven't read yet.

I generally don't rate a book if I DNFed it, but I managed to make it to 46% with this one, so I stand by my rating. This is definitely a me thing seeing as many other readers like this book. But I just couldn't any more. At least I found out early on that this author is not for me.

I just couldn't get past the storytelling style. The first half of this book has enough non-repetitive material for about two chapters. So by chapter 14, I was done. If you'd like a summary of the first half, click the spoiler below:

I came across Donna Hatch and her fabulous writing skills while browsing for new books on Goodreads. Once again, this website has done me proud.

I was immediately hooked like a fish when I read the synopsis of this book solely because I love pirates! There is something magical about the life of a pirate. Not that I approve of the raiding, pillaging, blundering, drinking, and wasting precious gold on sorted wenches but the freedom that comes with living on the open sea and being able to go wherever you please is something I think deep down everyone desires. Adventure constantly at your fingertips. Shall I list the reasons why this book was epic? I'm glad you agree. Here we go.

1. The Guise of a Gentleman is about 24 year old widow, Elise. She is the perfect English lady living within the confines of society for the sake of her young son who dreams of one day becoming a pirate. Elise is heartbroken over the loss of her husband and never plans to remarry, due to the fact that she feels doing so would be disrespectful to her former spouse. Perfect time to mention the one man who is going to throw her world completely upside down.

The impulsive and scandalous Jared Amesbury is a man on a mission, in more ways than one. The first time he comes across Elise, he is immediately captivated by her beauty and her fiery spirit. In the eyes of society Elise is everything a young woman should be, prim and proper. However, inside Jared can tell Elise is screaming for freedom and adventure. The more time Jared spends with Elise the more his affection grows and the more his affection grows the more Elise's life is in danger...

Jared Amesbury has a secret. He is a gentleman by day but a pirate by night. Jared is on one final mission before he is to renounce piracy forever. His mission is to infiltrate a band of pirates who've been haunting the seas for too long. Jared's job? To find out who's leading them and put an end to their tyranny. Can Jared keep Elise safe from the enemies in his past? Can Elise learn to open her heart again to another man? At the revelation of Jared's past, can Elise still love him when the truth is revealed?

I think the synopsis speaks for itself. It is a very unique and refreshing story that sucked me right in and didn't let go until I read the last sentence on the last page. Donna writes exceptionally well, giving just the right amount of detail and description so the whole story flows in my head like a movie. I know I've come across a great book when I can visualize everything so easily.

2. The characters are very VERY lovable. I loved Elise. She is a very strong spirited woman who, unfortunately, is trapped in a very domineering society. In the eyes of others she is very proper and knows her place. But secretly she wishes to just let her hair down. What I liked most about Elise is the fact that she was very mature and innocent. Even though she longed for freedom she didn't spend the entire book complaining about her life and how miserable it was. She fully understands and comes to terms with what is expected of her and she is very grateful for what she has. It's almost as if the reader recognizes in Elise this need for adventure before SHE does and it was a lot of fun to see her progress and finally obtain that freedom.

Jared...Oh....My....Word...Jared is like a warm cup of hot chocolate smothered with whipped cream and cinnamon along side a red velvet molten cake filled with cream cheese topped with vanilla ice cream under a hard chocolate shell. I love this man. He is unlike any character I have ever come across and I've come across many. Jared is mysterious, charming, romantic, witty, clever, caring, and sooooo handsome. I loved the whole concept of him being a gentleman by day but a pirate by night. I love this bad boy facade he's got going on but in reality he really is a good man. Jared definitely goes on my list of male characters in books that I wish on a star every night were real. Donna had me biting my nails with suspense just thinking about the drama that would unfold when Elise would eventually find out who Jared really was...She did not disappoint!

3. The romance was great and very clean which I applaud Donna for. I love me a good romance but I will never stoop so low as to read some trashy novel. The tension between Jared and Elise was so fun to read and you are cheering for them from page one. When the drama unfolds your heart breaks for them and when the drama is resolved you cry happy tears with them. Donna is not afraid to start the action right at chapter one and she never stops until the book is over.

In the end, the book was fantastic! Very unique, refreshing, and very enjoyable.

Enjoy and happy reading!

Wow. This book was fun to read. It was full of romance, adventure and suspense. Towards the end, I cried for both Jared and Elise, even though I knew the story would eventually end well. What a sappy person I am - I could not believe I cried so much, but I did.

Oh those Amesbury brothers!! I thought Cole was HOT in the first book in the series, "The Stranger She Married", but Jared in "The Guise of a Gentleman" was so HOT, he had my heart fluttering madly. He was so passionate and affectionate towards Elise (the lucky lady), yet so vulnerable and tortured at the same time. There was great chemistry between the two of them.

Elise was a young widow (with a 7 year old son), who was lonely but had convinced herself she'd be happier not to re-marry. Then she met Jared Amesbury, the second son of an earl who'd spent 12 years of his life working for the Government's secret service. He donned many guises, one being the notorious pirate "Black Jack". Elise fought against the attraction she felt towards Jared but his roguish/ playful personality both fascinated and frightened her. Just as she started to see his true gentleman-like nature and began to trust him, she was abducted by the notorious pirate (and Jared's enemy) Leandro. Elise then saw a side of Jared that confused and terrified her - a dangerous pirate.

The reason I gave this book a 4 star instead of a 5 star is that at times, it did drag on just a little. Even though some of the swash-buckling pirate scenes were entertaining, I preferred the romantic ones and wished there were more of them. Overall I loved the book and I will re-read it again in the future.

I am really looking forward to reading Christian's story next, in the third instalment of the series, "A Perfect Secret". I hope Ms Donna Hatch writes Grant's story too in the near future. I found him a fascinating character. Oh those Amesbury brothers! Sigh!

Highly implausible, but still somewhat enjoyable. I didn't like this one as much as the first book in the series. Also, I've never really cared for pirate stories all that much, and probably would have liked this better if it had remained on land.

Oh My Goodness -- Donna Hatch and the Amesbury brothers are totally addicting. I haven't been this wrapped up in a series since Stephanie Laurens and the Cynsters. I read the first book in the series, The Stranger She Married, and immediately bought the remaining books.

The second oldest Amesbury brother, Jared, is the hero in this book. You love him from first to last - and -- you better have a full box of tissues for the last few chapters because you will need all of them. Jared is the perfect irreverent foil to Elise. He brings out a whole different side of her. Jared is the most honorable man you'll meet - but he's between a rock and a hard place. He is an agent of the crown and has had to do some bad things because of that - and he's on his last mission. However, his past is catching up with him and threatening those he loves.

Elise thinks she's a happy widow and has absolutely no intention of ever remarrying because she thinks she could never find another man to equal her first husband. However, Jared makes her wonder if she was quite as happy in that marriage as she thought she was. She's pretty repressed -- very prim and proper. The way she and Jared meet shows you she has a bit of a non-conformist in her, but she keeps it pretty well restrained. You love her from beginning to end as well.

I had a couple of issues with the book (series) -- and you'll notice from my unusual 5-star rating that they didn't really bother me. First -- The oldest brother (Cole - from book one) is an earl and as such I would have thought that the brothers would have been referred to as Lord Jared, etc. rather than Mr. Amesbury and that the wives and sisters would be Lady xxxxx. Second -- the secret service folks refusing to help when Jared was about to be hanged. I can understand that they would not publicly acknowledge him, but why wouldn't they do anything behind the scenes to prevent the hanging. I didn't like that part at all!!! Thus -- the need for the tissues.

I love how the Amesbury brothers always come together to help each other even though they think they are not close. They protect and save each other all the time.

So, now it is on to the next book -- A Perfect Secret -- featuring perfectly, perfect Christian Amesbury. That is how the brothers always refer to him and I'm sure we'll learn why in this next book.

Book 2! I've been curious about this one especially since the hero, Jared, is an undercover pirate. I love pirates!

The story follows Elise who is recently a widow who wants adventure, but she is a mother and has responsibility. Jared who an undercover pirate by England. He has one big mission left to do before he can put up his bootstraps.

Ooo the beginning was super slow, but once you get to a certain point it hooks you in like a fish. I finished it in a couple of sittings after I got over the hump of slowness. I had no idea how everything was going to be fixed especially near the near. Ooo Jared. I was so worried.

I liked Jared and I did not fault him for not telling Elise the truth. The truth can get one killed in the spy/undercover world. However, at a certain point, I feel like he could've told her. But better to keep her out of the loop so she doesn't get him killed. I liked Elise too. She was sweet and kind.

Besides the slow beginning, I adored the story. Pirates, romance. All wonderful! I wouldn't want to be a pirate. It is a sad and short life for sure.

The ending was a little unlikely, to be honest, but it fit and I liked it a lot. I was honestly in shock and awe! HOW? WHAT? Oooo those brothers of his.

All-in-all this was an exciting read once you get past the slowness. You do not need to read book 1 to read this. It did well as a standalone. I'll give it 4 stars. Nearly a five.

Thrilling!

Seriously this book was so thrilling! There were pirates and gun fights, swordplay, and even some sadness. It was so much more exciting than I would have imagined.
Jared Amesbury seems like a gentleman, but Elise Berkeley can’t help but wonder what that roguish grin of his is really hiding. She finds him in a very questionable situation at the beginning of the book, but then his gentlemanly demeanor does not match. Elise has sworn to remain a widow for the rest of her days so she is undaunted by the suitors that seem to surround her. Jared does have something to hide, many things in fact, but as his life becomes entangled with Elise’s, he finds his past secrets tearing up to attack him. He must don a new persona and save the things that mean the most to him. But what is most important to him? Elise? His men? His family? His own life? He must decide and act and his action may prove him vulnerable.

Good clean read.

I love!!!! This author DONNA HATCH. The caracteres came to life, their chemistry were well developed as well. I recommend this read and all in the rogue heart series to anyone who enjoys romantic stories of loss and betrayal, forgiveness and redemption.

It will leave you laughing, crying, and swooning. Sprinkled liberally with suspense, mystery, and heart-melting kisses, this is not your ordinary historical tale of redeeming the rakes. Those seeking clean and wholesome romance with plenty of chemistry will love this story!

It was okay. 2.5 stars. Didn't love it but I didn't dislike it either. A few things bugged me which made my rating go down... In a nutshell, he was more of a jerk when they were together on the pirate ship than he needed to be, and I didn't find it attractive at all. The rest of the book was fine, albeit a little heavy on the kissing. He was over-the-top sensual, for my personal taste. And I didn't particularly want to hear about his "virility" or how she looked "ravished." Those two words should not be used more than once (if at all) in a book. :P And a few times they broke the strict code of conduct for the regency time period - the fact that she was a widow made it more believable but still a little unrealistic.
Too bad because I read tons of glowing reviews on it... and I bought the book.
Surprisingly the pirate plot was well executed and believable, which I appreciated. I have to say that the author certainly piqued my interest in side stories having to do with the brothers that I will probably read for fun.

I hate to bring down the ratings on this book because I really did enjoy it, but it was a little slow for me after the first chapter (and slow and long don't go together well). I had a hard time with how strict Elise was about the rules of society and what was and wasn't okay to do(even though she only follows the rules she likes anyway- riding off alone, etc...). I think that it would have given me more understanding into Elise's character if more was told about her husband and even better, if she had a reason for guarding her "freedom" so closely (maybe more detail about him censuring her for doing things that weren't "proper"). I also think that having Elise in a little more danger earlier on in the book and then having Jared torn between wanting to be near her and wanting to stay away thinking it would protect her would have also been beneficial. The last section was fairly exciting and I liked the way that the book ended up. Hooray for happy endings. All-in-all, I liked this book but am glad that I didn't end up buying it before I read it because it wouldn't get as much wear as some others.

I really enjoyed this book. It is so fun to be able to read a book that has adventure and romance, but stays clean! I really like how the author stays true to the time period she's set this series in. The most delightsome part to me, was as I was reading this book, the story was coming to the point where most romance novels would conclude, (i.e. the girls finds out his secret, but loves him so much that she forgives all and they blissfully live happily ever after!) there was still a good chunck of novel left to go! In a nice turn of events, upon learning his secret, she in a very real person sort of way, doesn't automatically decide all is right simply because she loves him. She has a hard time accepting him, and it's like you get another romance story, because he's got to woo her all over again! I love a two for one deal! I love meeting more members of this fictional family, and cannot wait for her to write their stories! I have been fully captivated by this fictional family and all their secrets.

This book. W~O~W. I experienced nearly every range of emotions possible as I read The Guise of a Gentleman. Jared is that playful, smoldering rogue-type hero who wields winks like weapons (say that last phrase ten times fast!) and leaves a trail of swooning females in his wake when he grins. The banter between Jared and Elise – right from the beginning – is just top notch and so entertaining! I grinned through nearly every scene they shared. And Jared and Colin? Oh be still my heart! So incredibly precious.

And then… I just cried for a while. And held my breath. While tears just kept streaming down my cheeks. Whew. This one tugged at all my emotions, y’all. In the best possible way.

The scenes in this novel are unique and full of action. The way that Elise and Jared meet is hilarious. They have an instant attraction to each other but as their friendship develops both fight it for different reasons. I liked the contrast of how Elise appreciated her independence as a widow while Jared was seeking freedom from the pressures of his adventurous life. I would consider this a clean romance, with characters full of passion. The Amesbury brothers reveal more of their complicated dynamics and family loyalty which made me pick up the next book in the series as soon as I finished this one :)

Wow, Hatch surpassed my expectations in this one! And she has found a new fan in me! If you are looking for a clean read, regency romance with shades of humor, action and suspense then look no further! This is a page turner, that will touch you on several different levels. The romance was sweet but thrilling, the characters very engaging, there was humor and even a time that brought me to tears. I love it when a book can take me by surprise! I cannot wait for Book 3, and I am hoping there is a Book 4 in the works for Grant (the remaining brother).

I love the stories that don't only keep me interested, but move me, make me hold my breath in anticipation, bring tear to my eyes, and bring joy and amusement to my heart.
The characters are so alive and engaging, the hero is amazing, has more than one personality ! I don't want to spoil the story for you, you just have to read and get to know this interesting man. The heroine is a strong, kind and brave woman, loved him even after knowing the truth about him.
Mrs. Hatch did a great job, I'm announcing myself a big fan.

I love this author!! This book was so good. I love a sweet romance and I love it when an author realizes that in order for me to buy into a love story the characters have to spend more than 5 seconds together. I love how much interaction there was between the two main characters. All I know is I would love to meet up with Jared, Cole and the rest of his hot brothers one day. I WISH WISH WISH that she will continue this series, with the next Brother. I can't wait to read about Christian!!

Another delicious read from Mrs.Hatch! I really liked this one, got totally "Swept" away. The romance was great and the tension was great between the characters. These books are adult romance without the explicit scenes. Her books are just a fun get away.

A Pirate pretending to be a gentleman, meets a woman who makes him want to find his true identity. Very clean, and fun. I liked the characters, and enjoy the writing style.
