The Blood of Patriots is the story of Captain Benjamin Merrell of North Carolina who was sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered by the Tory Court under Governor William Tryon. Capt. Merrell was head of the Rowan County Militia and became involved with the Regulators, a group that protested the unethical conduct of colonial officials and the exorbitant fees charged for official papers. Capt. Merrell and his wife Jemima moved from New Jersey to North Carolina in the mid-1750s and established a home near Salisbury. He was a planter and gunsmith, and he was executed as an example to anyone who disagreed with the colonial government. Capt. Merrell and his wife had 9 children and many Merrells throughout the United States are descendants of this couple. It is for them that this book is written.
Captain Benjamin Merrill was my several times removed Great Uncle. Hearing his story while researching our family tree, I wanted to learn more. I stumbled across this book written by one of his great grandsons. What a phenomenal job the writer did! It was engaging and informative without being dull like some history based books. I feel like I know my ancestor better after having read it and I’m proud to have him (albeit distantly) in my family line.
I am extremely grateful to be able to read about life for my 7th great grandfather. I am thankful for all he did to pave the way for liberty for his descendants. This is a great read. Lots of background and facts to help get to know better what these rebels were up against and trying to do.
