Born in Croydon in 1938, he was educated at Sunderland Technical College. Although he dreamed of becoming a writer since the age of twelve, his route to that goal was somewhat circuitous. Other jobs along the way included postman (not an especially jolly one, he recalls), gravedigger, plumber, and teacher.
Ahlberg wrote his first book when he was thirty-seven, after a decade of teaching - a profession that he maintains is "much harder" than being a writer. He says that if he hadn't become a writer, he would have loved to be a soccer player. He was married for many years to fellow children's author Janet Ahlberg, with whom he often worked. Their daughter, Jessica Ahlberg, is also a children's author.

This is a sturdy book made to stand up to the hands of its young target audience. The interactiveness of the book in that it enables readers to 'slot' characters where they belong will add to the reader's experience. The characters are quite flimsy and, though the one I have has all characters in relatively good condition, will not stand up to the test of time. The copy I'm reviewing is from a university library where the target audience has no access.
I was surprised that other reviewers had given four stars considering the first page of the story has 'swop babies'. Spelling mistake anyone? Not a great start to a beginner book that's introducing children to reading! Other than that, the pictures are great with a lot of white space that will draw the young reader's eye to the colourful illustrations. A great first reader to be read with Mum and Dad (though, hopefully they'll fix the spelling error) so that care can be taken with the characters.
