Awash with conflict and a building war, the known stars align against Van and his wing of the Guild in a fight for the ultimate control. But Van and his crew suspect there’s more to the Equal Grasp than just a band of thieves, and they begin their campaign at Bopul Station, a lonely outpost where corruption rules and Peacemakers are feared. To continue the fight, and the case, the crew and friends need more than just contacts. They need money. To that end, Van begins exploring an old mystery about his grandfather, which leads to the shocking discovery—the Earth is being stripped of her history, one object at a time, but that’s not the main purpose of the criminals. For their goals are bigger than just stealing art. Much bigger. One of their targets is nothing less than the end of the Fafnir, and Van, and everything he represents. Along the way, Icky learns about motherhood, and Funboy learns about grief, and everyone agrees that cheese is good and pants are bad—--sort of. There’s a time and place for everything. And Van will lead his crew for as long as he can. If he can stay alive. And that’s a pretty big if.
I WISH I COULD GIVE THIS BOOK AND SERIES A 10 STAR RATING...IT DESERVES A HIGHER RATING THAN 5 STARS
Point of Impact (Backyard Starship Book 20) by J.N. Chaney and Terry Maggert will definitely be a book that be on the top 10 Sci-Fi books of all times as well as the whole series. If you haven't read the previous books in this series, you need to. You will most definitely be glad you did.
This book and series is very well written, full of action, intriguing, suspenseful, and even mind-blowing, and at times, it will make you laugh, while other times it will leave you feeling sad. The characters are well defined, and J.N. Chaney and Terri Maggert will have feeling you right their with Van, Torrina, Perry, Netty-P, Icky, Rab, Funboy, Gabby, and the rest of the gang while they fight to save not only Earth but the known galaxy form the Equal Grasp.
Quote; "There is a difference between knowing the path you must walk, and how exactly to place your feet along every step of the way."
I really have enjoyed this book and series and hope you will too.
This book has all of the characters I like. The story moves forward in small but significant steps. The other side continues to out maneuver van and the guild. Van continues to win every battle, building up to a huge climax.
It’s an inflection point in the whole story arc. You won’t just enjoy time with your friends. You’ll witness history in the making.
Sucked. Lots of words, little action, instant resolution to the Netty issue with Calamity and the destruction of the Iowa and multiple long term characters. Holy shit this was a bomb in what has been a great series. If your tired of writing it you should have ended it a few books ago.

Wow! This was a doozy!! So many things happen in this book. I’m still reeling.😳 I simply love ❤️this series! Even at book 20 these two authors bring new adventures, action, subterfuge, drama and so much more. It’s really rather amazing! But… one of their very really gifts is how they bring the characters and the story to life, even making it feel current (if we really had aliens and a police force from space landing on Earth, that is 😉)😂 If you’re new to this series, looking at whether you want to read this book? I’d say do it because it’s really great, but what I’d really suggest (with sincerity exclamation points) is starting at book 1. This one has a ton happening in reaction to many of the things that have occurred throughout the books, so you’d miss out on all that backstory and build up to this book and that would just be a tragedy, a missed opportunity of untold entertainment. The beginning is usually the best place to start, anyways, but especially with this series. It’s a stack of stories—one adding to the next, & introductions of the characters, their lives, relationships and all the dramatics of the storylines. Hopefully you’ll start while on vacation because you won’t want to stop until you’ve reached the latest release. Guaranteed! Enjoy!👍😉 I can’t wait for book 21, bring the wrath!!
Wow, talk about ruining a book with a crappy ending! This book was great, I actually considered giving it a five star rating, up until the really, really crappy ending.
It has all the good stuff in it. Van and his merry band kicking ass. Putting some of the pompous bureaucrats and military asshats on Earth in their place. Lot of banter and finally we get a resolution of the stupid , way too long lasting, crap with Netty.
Sure , that part became painfully predictable once the author started to drop some not so subtle clues but at least that nonsense is over with.
Then literally in the last few chapters the authors pulls a really really crappy twist out of the hat. The typical lazy Hollywood writer hack style, out of the blue, destroy everything and make the hero, suddenly, completely stupid kind of twist.
Seriously, that shit completely ruined the book for me. I do not think I have ever had a book going from potentially being a five star one to having to decide whether it give it one or two stars before.
Since I have much enjoyed the series so far I settled for two stars.
Master Peacemaker Van Tudor and his crew aboard the *Fafnir* have been busy. They have a lot on their plate since Van has decided not to sit behind a desk at Anvil Dark, but pursue the bad guys like he has always done. This suited his crew just fine except they had to change some of their long-standing operating procedures. No long was Master Tudor doing to go charing out of the *Fafnir*, or *Frankie* when they under went a boarding action. As a Master, his crew considered him way too valuable to be exposed to the bad guys that way. So, Van was having to adjust to somethings which he didn’t really like.
Additionally, anytime some Guild action required the presence of a Master, guess who was called to handle the job. Van didn’t mind, but some of these taskings were minor and just not worth his time. Yet, he did them since he was usually available or could be made available if necessary. But, his real problems were back on Earth where the Equal Grasp was stirring up a lot of problems. There also seemed to be a lot of Earthly artifacts floating around in space and Van wanted to know where this stuff was coming from and why.
He was directed to a floating space station called Bopul which was similar to Crossroads in scale, but seemed to have been built by bits and pieces of other ships and space stations over a short period of time. It was operating as a trade center of sorts with the unusual idea of having created their own currency. There was nothing unusual about this nor was most of it illegal, but Van still wanted to know where the stuff from Earth was being acquired, how and why.
There are a number of things going on in this book that take from the previous books. Gabby is recuperating at Point Alus Kyr, a major medical facility in space which had recently found a new Director that was doing her best to stay on Van’s and the Guild’s good-side. Gabby appeared to be physically ready to rejoin the *Fafnir* crew and was more than ready to rejoin with Funboy. Then there was the new mother, Icky, who really didn’t know how to be a mother since her’s had up and left the family while she was just a baby herself. So, Van decided that Icky and Paxomar with their children needed to spend some time with the P’nosk. These were strongly aliens a matronly bent where every P’nosk had several Mothers to care for them. A little time in this environment could teach Icky and Pax a lot about parenthood.
Back to his problems with Earth and the Equal Grasp. These bad guys wanted to do nothing but exploit Earth and their naïve population. The introduction of high-powered off-world weapons was one thing that Van Tudor was not going to allow. How to solve the problem of the Equal Grasp was suddenly interrupted by the information that Miryam had been abducted by none other than Colonel Mandeville! This now put Van on a war-footing against this Colonel who had no idea who he was messing with. Heads were going to roll over this and Miryam was going to be freed or something very drastic would take place in the United States.
In addition to this major problem, the Twist network was being sabotaged by some unknowns and for some unknown reason. This also required a Master to start the investigation because it crossed numerous jurisdictional boundaries. The Twist net work was vital to all commerce within the galaxy and made day-to-day conversation over vast distances possible. Someone couldn’t just go blowing up this Twist stations without some repercussions.
All this is leading to a very surprising and unexpected end. Van has got a lot of things going on and he’s not necessarily looking at everything he should before he acts. And then there’s the possibility that Netty’s work containing Calamity could be coming to a catastrophic end. The story doesn’t end with this book, but takes a major change in direction. Unfortunately, book 21 isn’t mentioned on Amazon so we’ll have to wait to find out how this ends.
This book does not contain a lot of upside for Van and the gang - something big this way cometh
Oh dear Van, it's all going a bit Pete Tong in book 20.
The entirety of space is going down the toilet, everyone is gunning for Van: Yotov, the Equal Grasp, True Direction (not an extraterrestrial boy band), GKU, the Ferals, the Tsarina and Kiki. Oof.
And it gets worse when Van realises what the Equal Grasp are after - spoiler redacted here - "No, they’re on Earth for XXXXXXXX. They are the XXXXXXXX the Grasp wants. They’re going to hand over trinkets and pretty things, and they’re going to quietly take XXXXXXXX in payment.”
But amongst all this doom and gloom, there is still time for some trendy and relevant green stuff "Perry nodded. “Good idea, boss. And environmentally friendly, too, recycling like that. I mean, do you know how many slabs of gravity- bending alien alloy just end up in landfills? And those things take forever to compost.”
And of course, quality humour: obligatory quote - “What the hell does everyone have against mimes, anyway? They’re highly skilled performers,” Perry said. “Oh, they know— they’re just not saying.”
Can you guess who they are talking about here - "He walked off to speak with Urnak and Icky. Torina and I just watched him go. Torina crossed her arms. “You know, if I ever had to pick the member of this crew most likely to grow up and become a serial killer—” “Uh- huh.”
This series just gives and gives. I'm so looking forward to the final five.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the series up to this point. Other than a few recent weird decisions by the main character they could be overlooked. But this book was a complete clusterfuck. It was a like reading a new character, making decisions totally out of character and making mistakes he would have never made.
It's almost like the authors wanted to go a certain way and they just did anything to get it in that direction. In one breath he would talk about the antagonist "playing chess and having to match her" and in the next breath going "oh well, I cant think of that stuff let's just do this!". Like WTF? Too much out of character shit in this book.
The ending was extremely bad. Not just the conclusion of the final "thing" but leading up to it, the decisions that were made were insane. He had prior knowledge of many things but for some reason he and the people around him never thought of those things that had happened earlier in the book. This is with TWO AI characters that can run through possible situations super fast. I won't say anything more but I am seriously thinking of stopping this series. I MAY give it one more book to see if they can get back on track, otherwise I am done.
I equate this to The Last of Us 2. Ellie's character was doing shit the ENTIRE game that was so out of character, I ended up stopping halfway through and just watching the cutscenes on youtube.
I truly don't know what happened with this particular book...someone missed the mark completely.
I have enjoyed this series since I first picked it up. It just keeps getting better and better. This was book 20, so there’s really WAY too much to get into with a review.
Let me just say, WOW! What an awesome ending! No spoilers, but heck, if you've made it this far get ready for a world, no, a universe of change.
What do you do when you have no idea who to trust? When you can't tell friend from foe?
Luckily for Van he has built up his own core cadre of family that can support him. He's going to need them!
This book actually put me on the point of crying. The losses here give the main character and his crew even more incentive and direction. Also, this author shows that even in the mist of tragedy, there is hope and opportunity. I look forward to the next book. My only reason that this book gets 4 stars is because the book is still pretty short to me (used to reading books like Lord of the Rings). I wish it was longer.
This is a great series, and the author ties in our current human culture extremely well with the changing times and galaxy. This helps to mold the main character and his motivations as well as who he is.
I felt the series had been going off the boil the last couple of books, however wanted to stick with it, as it was still a good story Thankfully I did, As this time round things are looking up, not wanting to give too much away, but Van and the crew struggle and the end of book cliff hanger is surprising Hopefully the next few are of the same quality, it seems as though things maybe coming to a conclusion and I hope the author does not feel the need to drag it out unnecessarily
This series continues to be amazing. I especially enjoyed a major laugh-out-loud meeting between Van, Grove, Icky, and Perry. There are several problems with long series like Backyard Starship: buying the series is expensive (because, of course, you want to own it to reread many times), and you grow to love all the characters, so that any loss is heartbreaking. What an author gives, an author can take away at any time.
What can I say but wow, Van and the crew have enemies coming at them from all angles. But I think that they forgot a little of earth history. If you poke the bear, you may end up waking the giant. It will be interesting to see if any of the other peachmakers have the guts to come and support Van and his group.
Is it possible to find a series that gets better with each release of a book? Yes, it this case it it certainly is. I don't give away plot,or information about the characters, I'd rather you find that on your own. I just encourage you to pick up this series, from the first to the latest episode, it's all terrific, I hope you find it so!
This story has lots of adventure, action, suspense, romance and humor.
The story is unique and engaging and the characters are familiar and engaging. Van and his crew continue their pursuit of very bad criminals while trying to keep Earth protected and allowed to carefully enter commerce with space.
The are always more evil and greedy criminals seeking power and influence over everyone else and their money. Governments get sold out frequently. Banks and finance get cheated and robbed daily. Transportation and communication is always used to cheat and trick others. But sometimes an AI knows best.
Another great installment in the BYSS saga! Wasn’t expecting the plot twists but really set things up for what comes next. Great story, great character development and awesome combat. I highly recommend!
The end of a relationship brings about a new adventure. Van and the crew face overwhelming odds as they attempt to save Earth and the Guild territory from the evil that surrounds them.
The writers continue to do a great job of keeping the characters and the situations realistic, for science fiction purposes anyway. I look forward to reading more stories about the adventures of Van and his crew.
This is a good read and a great setup to go beyond what Channey and Maggert have written so far. Tying up the previous books and setting up for more development towards a solution. Bringing back a major character only helps.
Always some new twist wrecking their plans or threatening Earth. But Van is on to them. The evil that plots to plunder Earth's resources and people. I look forward to the next installment of their heroic fight.
As always a great read. I do have to say if you haven't picked up 1 of these books you need to go back to book 1 and start reading. You'll love the characters. The camaraderie between the Characters in the books will pull you in. I can't wait for the next book !!!
This issue did not disappoint. It's just keep getting better and better. I like the way more characters from different issues have been included into the current line. Can't wait for the next one!!!
One of the best sci-fi series out there. Action and passion with extraordinary character development told in a deceptively brilliant writing style. Just get the first book and the addiction begins…
Excellent series. Frustration always challenges Van and his crew. A major page in their saga was turned at the conclusion of this book. Can't wait to see how they evolve.
Another solid book in the series. . The author continues to evolve the story and not let it go stale. So many loose threads that are starting to get tied up but others start. I look forward to the next book.
Absolutely love this series and have never been disappointed in the story line. This one has to be the most gut wrenching and shocking one yet. The author has just opened up a whole new story direction for Van and his crew and I hope this is the beginning of many more books to be added.
I CAN’T WAIT for the next book……. I’m Sooo involved with this crew and these stories that i hereby solemnly request to be placed in stasis until the next volume is published……..
