Salvation Pack #1

Wolf at the Door

Rate this book
Gwendolyn Jones is working on an article about werewolves, not that she believes they exist. But there are people out there who do, like the nervous man who slips her a flash drive with information he claims will prove to the world shifters are out there. Gwen starts questioning just what to believe when two very real werewolves come knocking on her cabin door later that night.

Someone has a flash drive with pictures that could endanger his pack, and alpha Jacque LaForge will do whatever it takes to destroy it. But something deep inside him ignites when he knocks on the door of that “someone”. He didn’t think he’d find a mate, or that when he did, she’d be human. But now that he has found Gwen, he knows he has a fight on his hands to protect her from his former vengeful pack who are out to hurt him by any means necessary.

Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.

One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same.

N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.

I'm a huge fan of this author but I just couldn't get into this story. I tried reading and then switched to audio and I was still not interested. I finished it because it was part of a group challenge, but I was bored with it the whole time.

Typical wolf shifter meets human mate storyline...
Wolf shifter kidnaps human for her own safety, old wolf pack wants revenge and will hurt human mate.
Mating issues because he has a long life span as a shifter and she's just human.
Turning humans is dangerous and most don't survive.
Old pack attacks

I think I've just read too many shifter romances and it's all become blase.

This book just didn't work for me on any level. I spent most the time rolling my eyes and groaning. I didn't particularly like the characters and the romance was instant and a bit ridiculous. He kidnaps her but hey no biggy because she is his mate and so naturally she wants him so much that she's willing to look past the fact that werewolves are real and he kidnapped her and won't let her go or return to her life. But hey, it wasn't that great of life anyway so why should it matter right?

DNF at about 50%

I read one of Ms Walters other works and loved it, but I just could not stomach this one. I have a very strong dislike for Kidnapping victims that are "kissed" into submission, and end up enjoying it. Really? Are we now ok with women being that pitiful? Needy? and plain pathetic?
Some handsome hunk scares you into nearly killing yourself in a car accident, leaving you concussed, bruised and battered and all he needs to do is kiss you and wham... instant ok with everything? He and his brother's ripped into her life, tore her out of her home, terrorized her, then laughed at her fear, but it's ok cause y'a know... mate and all.
Yeah no... sorry half way through that book I absolutely loathed Jaques and his brother, to the extent that I knew no matter what he did after this to win Gwen over it would not be enough for me to ever be ok with him.

50% in and I had to finally stop. There's only so many times one can read how often the heroine "gasps" at his touch; or how hard the hero's "cock" is. Your "cock" "cock" "cock" is hard. I get it. What I didn't get was the story. Awful. Just plain awful.

I loved how we are just thrust right into the story and the action begins right away! There are a lot of questions, but they come to be answered as the story unfolds for our heroine, Gwen. We are beside her as her world shifts and changes, and the things she thought were fantasy and lore, come true. It was so easy to fall in love with all these characters, to feel their pain, their hope, their happiness, their bonds with each other. I’ve had this on my TBR for a while now, but now see a binge for the entire series in my immediate future <3

N.J. Walters’ is one of my favorite authors from the paranormal/shifter genre, reason being, she has never disappointed me yet! Wolf at the Door is a fantastic new beginning to her Salvation Series; it is packed with intense romance, climatic fights and alpha wolves with a score to settle!
Gwen has a career as a writer for various sources with her focus on the paranormal. Does she believe it? Not until it kicks her door down…literally! After making life-altering decisions Gwen has found herself in a rural town miles away from the nearest person, and on the hunt for her next article diving into the world of werewolves. Now armed with information about werewolves, Gwens’ wildest dreams may become true.
Jacque, alpha of the Salvation pack is doing what any typical alpha does; protects the pack at all costs; even if it means breaking in doors and kidnapping writers intent on exposing them. Jacque and the members of the Salvation pack have found how information got out about werewolves and are now striving to keep a lid on it, before it boils over.
Walters’ characters first meet with a bang, and the action only increases from there. Jacque feels an emotional pull within minutes of seeing Gwens’ face, problems arise when Jacque’s brother, Louis is feeling the same pull. Word has gotten around that the Salvation pack has an “outsider” with information about their pack, and now sees her as a threat, one that needs to be eliminated. Now they are trying to solve two problems, whom will Gwen choose to accept as her mate? And how can they protect her from other packs that see her as a weak leak? It doesn’t take long for packs to start sniffing around, searching for Gwen. And who should be the one looking for Gwen? A member from their former pack, one who enjoys stalking his prey; with his arrival Jacque is looking to protect Gwen, protect the pack, and settle the score. Can he settle the score and protect his possible future mate?
I love reading N.J.s’ work; she has the ability to draw a reader in until the last page. Her character development is fantastic; every one has unique qualities some that make you hope and pray they can survive against the odds and some that make you want to read their demise. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book, needless to say I’ve pre-ordered book 2, Wolf in Her Bed.

What would you do if the things that went bump in the night knocked on your door? Better yet they broke it down and gave you a sniff? Well our heroine in Wolf At The Door was faced with these very same decisions. What would a tabloid writer of extreme non-fiction do? I mean really if she wanted to write a paranormal romance she has all the material she needs standing on her door step.
I enjoyed the first book in the Salvation Pack series by N.J. it was a fun read that allowed me to take a break from my own reality and wish for my very own Alpha Wolf. I must say no one can write an endearingly clueless- about -females alpha male like N.J. I had several LOL moments as well as the “oh shit” moments and I must say our heroine Gwen is pretty kick ass!
In Wolf At the Door we see the beginning of the Salvation Pack in a rural town in North Carolina. Jacque LaForge (our sexy Cajun Alpha Wolf) has formed the pack to get away from his father’s tyrannical rule in Louisiana. The pack includes his brother Louis, cousin Armand friends Gator and Cole. When they encounter Gwen it is to prevent her from spilling the hidden secrets of the werewolves and their existence, little do they know she doesn’t believe in the stuff she writes.
Instantly there is a fierce attraction between Jacque and Gwen but there is a twist Louis wants her too! I love how the characters are developed and we get to see a glimpse inside their hearts. They are honorable, loyal and damn sexy too boot. They will fight for the right to mate with whomever they choose protect the innocents regardless if they are human or wolf yet they will not hesitate to protect what they deem as theirs by any means necessary.
For those that are fans of the Legacy Series by N.J. yes there are similarities in that these wolves are honorable, sexy and lethal. I love being able to pick up a paranormal read and think to myself hey this could happen to me, because the story is so well written and in the here and now. As always another N.J. Walker read that I have thoroughly enjoyed and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Gwen makes her living freelancing stories debunking the paranormal world and it’s legends and lore. Sure, she’s inherited a cabin in the back of nowhere and she now has the time to write that great story she’s always dreamed of… but a girl’s gotta pay the grocery bills. She might have the cabin, but she’s still gotta live. She doesn’t believe in things that she cannot see, so when she got an offer of information on real live werewolves she jumped on it. Meeting in a cemetery was probably not her greatest moment, but the guy wanted privacy and where better than among the dead. Flash drive securely in hand she returns home, a touch spooked by the encounter but determined to start reading as soon as possible.

Imagine her surprise when later that night two men show up at her door demanding the flash drive. Two honest to freaking reality werewolves. She did what any sane person would do, she fought and tried to escape – only that didn’t work out too well for she crashed her car and ended up in the wolves den anyway.

Jacque and his brother, cousin and two friends had escaped from the oppressive cruelty of his father’s Louisiana pack. The Alpha was mad with power and ruled with an iron claw that was quick to punish, usually with death. That his sons had defied him and dared to leave without his permission to set up their own pack pushed his madness even further over the edge. Now Jacque and his Salvation pack were constantly on the lookout for trouble heading their way for they knew they would be found and there would be a battle that not everyone would survive.

So when he discovered that Gwen had been given information that could not only oust them to the world, but to his father as well, Jacque did the only thing he could do – retrieve the information and learn how much the woman actually now knew. It took only a few minutes to discover that she’d opened the files and had started reading the truth, a major misstep on her part for now her future was guaranteed – and not how she’d expected.

To complicate matters both he and his brother recognized Gwen as a possible mate. While he suspected his brother only wanted her because Jacque did, still it would cause even more trouble in his new small pack. When she tried to escape he stopped her, that she crashed her car and ended up with a concussion was an unfortunate side effect. But it did make it easier to bundle her up and take her back to their compound. Her life as she had known it was now over.

Wolf At The Door paints such a picture of desperation – the men’s determination to escape from a life of cruelty and Gwen’s panic at finding out that those things she didn’t believe in actually did exist, and that she was falling in love with one of them. As the first story in the series,, the world building was tight and it was easy to picture their new home in the forest, as well as the utter single mindedness of remaining free to live within their own pack, a pack with rules that made sense and where every person has a say, is listened to and respected. Even if the Alpha, Jacque, had the final say. The secondary characters are well defined and each has the beginnings of their own unique personality. It’s a given that we’ll learn more about everyone in the rest of the series – but there was enough given now to make them real, with honest emotions and needs. We also get a taste of the viciousness of their former Alpha – and the lengths he will go to in order to not be defied by his own kin.

Gwen and Jacque’s romance was such fun to watch. From total confusion and defiance to grudging acceptance to absolute devotion – their journey hits all the right buttons. Gwen will turn out to be this Alpha’s best asset as life changes for them both in so many ways.

I completely enjoyed Wolf at the Door and would recommend it to any lover of Shifter Romance. At this time there are seven (7) stories in the Salvation Pack series. Please don’t let that number stop you from starting this – I’ve read them all on a binge week and am writing up the reviews now – they are all so worth your time and effort to get to know these amazing wolves and their mates.

4.5 stars. First book by this author and clearly I've been missing out. Had this book for quite awhile and just.....squirrel. So now I have read and look forward to reading the rest of the series, because I really like this group of characters. Oh and I'm already calling dibs on Gator....I know, I know this is not his book, but that guy cooks all the time.....DIBS.

I really liked the storyline of this book. Gwen's a writer, yes of paranormal books *smiles*. She meets with an "informant" for information and proof of werewolves, naturally Gwen thinks he's a bit crazy. When she gets home, she also gets a couple of visitors. Jacque and his brother Louis pay her a visit. Gwen is tough as nails, she is something else. She is a potential mate for both brothers, which rarely happens in their world, but she only has eyes for Jacque.

They take her home with them, to save her from their dads pack. Their dad is something else, which I not a compliment. He and his pack come for her, but luckily she is so damn tough because if she wasn't I don't think this outcome would have been one I liked. But Jacque was so great during this entire time, I adored how he treated Gwen....relationship goals.

Great book & storyline....and now I get to stalk...err follow N.J. Walters *winks*.

No plot, characterization, world building. What you'll find here is sex between stranger, an idiot and an other with fangs. And yes, I still wish that so called writers would understand that no one wants to read about fake reactions nor fake people just because we like paranormal settings.

And please romance lovers love romance, we don't want the easy way out, the mystical, fake bond. Groan.

DNF @23% (for now maybe)

I didn’t like how the hero treated the heroine. I don’t like how it was so okay and not out of the ordinary to take choice away from someone. To decide everything for them. To violate their privacy to such an extent is unforgivable.

I’ve read a lot of shifter books and I’m ok with the whole alpha male routine - I actually love it but there is always a clear emphasis on how much they respect their respective mates and how alpha behaviour only crosses lines which can be crossed in an eventual grovel/redemption arc later in the book. This hero gave me the ICK so bad. I would hate him from the start. He only thinks of himself clearly.

Maybe I should have given this more of a chance and read further but I just can’t at the moment - I dislike and hate him too much.

Shifter Scepticism!

Gwen is an aspiring paranormal romance writer but is sceptical at best that they really exist. She is given information about wolf shifters that changes her world.
Jacques & his brother find her but then discover she could be their mate - yes both want her!
Gwen despite not believing they’re real finds herself kidnapped by the brothers to keep her safe & then finds out not only are they real but that she is now trapped in their world as others come looking for her.
A great start to this series & I’ll be reading the rest for sure.

Another Enthralling Fantasy by N.J. Walters

One of the many things I love about this author’s writing style is the care the heroes take with the heroine (who are always strong enough to stand on their own). This book pulls the reader, and the heroine, Gwen, into a new world of uncharted territory where she’ll find the love and companionship she’s always dreamed of.

Gwen has been interviewing people for the paranormal type articles she's been writing. So when someone asks to meet her in a cemetery and tells her he has proof that werewolves exist, she reluctantly meets him and gets handed a flash drive. Unfortunately the werewolves can't allow her to keep the flash drive and that's when interesting things start happening.

Louis and Jacque LaForge are brothers and werewolves. Jacque is the alpha of the pack that split off from their father's pack and he's been keeping their secret from the humans. But now he and his brother must get a flash drive that was given to a human female that proves werewolves really do exist.

From the very start these two brothers did things wrong and they scared Gwen to death in the process. If they had snuck into her house and stolen the flash drive from her, things would have been so much simpler. Instead they confronted her, scared her, caused her to wreck her car and then kidnapped her. If that wasn't enough for them to handle it turns out that Jacque realizes that she is his mate and also a possible mate for his brother Louis, which makes things really awkward for a while.

Things are going pretty good until their evil father comes with a bunch of minions from his own pack to try and kill Gwen because she's human and their father is just plain mean as hell, which is one of the reasons they split from his pack.

There's some great action, bloody fight scenes and a few emotional tear jerking scenes where I needed to take a minute just to let it all sink in. The sex was hot, erotic and just what this story needed to make it even better than it already was.

LOVED it.

Gwen, a writer for tabloids is meeting a contact for an interview about "real werewolves". He gives her a flash drive then runs off. Later that night two werewolves show up at her door to try to find out what information she was given and she is injured when she tries to escape from them.

The wolves (brothers Jacque and Louis) take her to their home. They've formed a small pack of their own with their cousin and two friends and both Jacque & Louis recognize Gwen as their potential mate but it's Jacque she is drawn to.

The lore is well plotted and the characters are developed very well. I LOVE Jacque, he is everything you could want in an alpha hero. Tender, sexy, protective, the whole package. Gwen is a terrific heroine, not immediately falling into his arms but unable to resist their attraction.

This was also a longer story than I'm used to from this author and the extra length really allowed the romance to develop. Just a terrific read and I loved all the characters. Anxious to get started on the next in the series.

I feel like I have wanted to read this book forever and I was honestly a little disappointed by it.

Gwen is a paranormal writer and she meets a contact in a graveyard and then two men show up at her house wanting to know what the contact gave/told her. But oh they smell her and shocker both brothers smell her as a mate. Gwen freaks out, runs away in her car, Jacque jumps on her car to get her to stop again Gwen freaks out and crashes the car. So Jacque kidnaps her, drives her hours away and tells her she can never go home. So naturally Gwen jumps his bones. Then the rest of the book is a lot of their old pack trying to attack them and Jacque trying to convince Gwen that it's a good thing that he kidnapped her and took away her life.

Besides the story being a bit weak, I felt like the writing was extremely simple. This usually doesn't bother me.. ok let me rephrase, I usually don't notice it. So for it to bother me it's got to be pretty bad.

Ill read the next book just because I want to know about Armand. He was a freaking sweetie.

4 stars!

Cover: 3*
Hero: 5*
Heroine: 4*
Story: 4*

This is my first book by this author, and I was not disappointed! It's a great shifter/fated mates love story which I am a sucker for! Great story and character development. I felt like I had a good sense of not just the main characters but also the secondary characters. The secondary characters all get their own books in the series, and I can't wait to read them!

Thankfully the relationship between the H/h was somewhat slow to build which made it more believable. Too many times, fated mates stories end up "wham bam" and that's it. The author took a fated mates story, added in danger due to the H's father, which actually help the h believe and trust H and his pack. The background story of the war between the Salvation pack and the H's father's pack is not over and will continue in the subsequent books.

Can't wait to start the next book!

Small Pack, Big Hearts

I was thinking to myself what sets this book apart from the many shifter romances I have read. I love this genre. I never get tired of it. But I do hope for something unique in each book. In Wolf at the Door, a reporter finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and gets kidnapped by 2 werewolves. She is taken out of state to their small pack. And that is what I found unique about the book. Not that it was a small pack, comprised of just 5 male werewolves, but the author lets us get to know each of the 6 major players in this book. I felt like I knew them all and I lived the story with them. This is a romance, so the primary players were the alpha and the reporter. But now I want a story on each of the other 4 male werewolves. This hopefully is the start of a new series.

When it comes to trying out new authors I am a bit wary unless they come highly recommended. N. J. Walters is relatively new to me; however, my decision to read and review Wolf at the Door was based on the following:

1. Wolf at the Door is a paranormal romance and anyone who knows me knows that I absolutely love this genre.
2. The cover is soooo hot.
3. And last, but not least, I found he synopsis to be intriguing.

Based on the above, I was expecting a story that would keep me engaged from start to finish. Unfortunately, it did not live up to my expectations. It was not a bad story, but for me it was just a bit bland. I was hoping for a story that was different from the typical shifter romances, however this was not the case.

Wolf at the Door, which is the first book in the Salvation pack series, tells the story of human freelance journalist Gwendolyn Jones. She writes stories about paranormal activities and beings, but alas, she does not believe that they are for real. I found this strange, but then who am I to question a person’s opinion and actions no matter how unusual it may appear. Gwen had relocated to Tennessee with the intent to focus on writing her first novel. While there she received information from an informant that would completely change her life.

Jacque LaForge , pack leader for the salvation pack was intent on retrieving the information that had been passed to Gwen in a bid to prevent her from exposing his kind. However, when he laid eyes on her he knew without a doubt that he had to do all in his power to protect as she is his mate. What followed as a result is a story that is filled with action, steamy sex and suspense.

Gwen is the type of heroine who does not break under pressure. She is a fighter and not one who gives up easily. She had a hard life growing up and does not know what it’s like to be loved and to be a part of a family. She kept herself from experiencing true friendship and love as she feared rejection.

Jacque, tired of his father’s tyranny left home and started his own pack. He is strong, loyal and honorable and is willing to lay down his life to protect Gwen. What I liked about the members of this pack is that they are loyal and honorable just like their leader and they would go to any means necessary to protect their legacy.

I was disappointed with how the conflict with his father was dealt with. The story ended without it being resolved. I am hoping that it will be addressed in the next book in the series.

Overall, I found this to an ok read. Although this was not I expected, I was intrigued by the secondary characters and I am willing to continue the series so I can get to read their stories.

I hoped.

Some Spoilers!!! When I read the blurb I was concerned but I have not read a PRN in a long time and wanted to read something with wolves. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Jacque and Gwen are each trying to find their place in life. Wondering where they fit in. Jacque starting his own pack away from his tyrant father and Gwen moving to a new town on her own. From the first page I knew it was going to be cheesy. Why would you meet someone in a cemetery and you don’t know them, just to get information for a story? A story for a tabloid? A story about werewolves? Can you meet during the day at the cemetery? I know she was trying to make a living but come on! Right then I knew this was not going to be the best. Jacque was a little overly alpha and Gwen ,bless her heart, had no will power or backbone even though Jacque continually said she did. But after kidnapping and ruining her life, Gwen was able to kiss Jacque after trying to escape and crashing her car. Had sex with him after two days, still he and his friends have ruined your life and kidnaped you. You almost died and now other werewolves are trying to kill you. It’s okay. I will still have sex with you. Lots of secondary characters that you know will have their own story. One thing I will say, most first books are not the best and they get better as the series goes on. I may try the second book because I do like the other characters. Not now though. Maybe later.

Steamy and suspenseful romance that keeps you enthralled

I loved Jacque and Gwen’s fated mates shifter romance with a side of danger. The story will give you all the feels - laughing, crying, swooning, cringing, teeth gritting, and cheering. Jacque is a werewolf who left his former pack due to their violent and backward culture. He now is the alpha of a small pack. Gwen writes articles for magazines about paranormal creatures but she believes they are fiction. Until she gets a thumb drive with photos of partially shifted werewolves and she’s kidnapped by them. Jacque instantly recognizes Gwen as his mate and takes her to his home to protect her as well as protect his pack. Despite Gwen being taken, this is not a dubcon or noncon situation. Their relationship develops organically without forced intimacy. A relationship for them is complicated even if there was not imminent danger from Jacque’s old pack and they will have to work through many things to get to their HEA. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline with all the good elements that you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, fated mates, loyal friends, painful pasts, drama, plot twists, and laughs. I will definitely be reading more of this series.

This is my first paranormal romance book. I know shifters constitute a prominent part of this genre, and I feel like this book helped give me insight as to what readers might find appealing about them, especially werewolves.

I found this book to be filled with danger and fight scenes that were thrilling, but I didn't like the "and now our heroine is grievously injured and fighting for her life" aspect of things, which happened more than once. Werewolf men as powerful and loyal and extremely loving pack-people was interesting, especially because the hero was one of several werewolves we meet who embody this wholesome, non-toxic masculinity.

For now, I prefer my historical romances. I'm interested in exploring other types of paranormal romance, but I'm also interested in reading more Salvation Pack stories to see how future books play out. Will all the female protagonists be mortally wounded at least once per book while the males are utterly unscathed and nurse them back to health? That would not be my jam. How different is a story where the hero isn't the "alpha" werewolf?

It’s a solid 3.5. I was intrigued enough to stay up past my bedtime (I have work in the morning and get very cranky without a good nights sleep) but I don’t know yet if that means I actually enjoyed it. Certain parts of it I loved, others ... not sure. I wish the book had taken the time to develop the relationship rather than just “alright less than 24 hours in and they’re falling in love that’s cool”. It is a little explained but not in the amount of detail I wish it had been.
That’s the other thing: so much detail is left out. I would love to have seen more backstory regarding Jacque’s (sp?) parents, how the Salvation Pack began. I think that would have helped develop the characters a little more as well.
