Forty-five-year-old dad loses his wife. He is a mess. His daughter, Kit, though, reminds him so much of her every time he looks at her and has been pushing her away. When Kit catches him with her best friend, they have it out, and he makes promises to do better. Though things improve, Kit later walks in on her dad doing something else. There’s a bit of rejection, possession, and eventually acceptance.
I gave this book four stars and simply said: it was good, concise, and did what it needed to do.
Here’s the thing: this is a taboo story. It is taboo. You don’t need to overthink it. You go into it knowing it’s taboo—the synopsis tells you from the very beginning. So if you read it knowing that and still get angry… that’s on you. The author is very clear about the kind of stories she writes. She doesn’t write anything but taboo. If you enter this world, then rate it as a taboo book.
As a taboo story, I give it four stars. It was concise, it said what it needed to say, and it delivered exactly what it promised. That’s it.
Now, if you read this book through the lens of personal morality, then yes—it’s a terrible book. Absolutely awful. But if you read it as taboo fiction, it’s good. Period.
And one more thing—the books you read do not define you as a person. Reading something does not mean you want to live it, support it, or agree with it. It just means you read it. Fiction is fiction.
I read it, yes. Would I ever live it? Never. Would I want anyone else to live it? Absolutely not. Do I agree with this topic in real life? No.
But in fiction—depending on how it’s presented—if it intrigues me, I’ll read it.
Very, very taboo - maybe a bit over the top this one was, but still a well written, spicy read. Dad is a big old mess after his wife dies and I debated giving it three stars because I really disliked him in the beginning. His philandering and getting together with Kit's "best friend" will be too much for some readers - even if you normally read taboo. I'd suggest just sticking it out and continuing to read... it has a HE.
Wow, ok Rue 🤭 This was... wow 🫠 I have no words rn. Short and spicy- sometimes it's all you need. I made the mistake of reading this on break at work and worked myself up 😅 Daddy/ daughter relations born out of grief is all I can say ✌🏾
I need all of Rue's books and I need them to be full novels!!
