The journey in this story was much easier for me to cheer for than the previous book in this trilogy. I found both Tillie and Keondric to be root-for worthy leads, and their hopes and dreams were ones for which I wanted them to rise to the challenge of overcoming their sin (through forgiveness from God) and trials and obstacles. While I wish the emphasis had been on God’s love conquering all rather than human love doing so (because human love, while cherishable, will not always sustain us nor aid us in gaining Heaven), I did appreciate other aspects of the faith thread in the book.
The suspense was great and intriguing from the first chapter and kept me hooked throughout, and I even found myself enjoying the love-triangle romance, which is a tough sell for me. It wasn’t cheesy, and both options were good, worthy men I could see Tillie choosing. I liked this story and the fight for justice and freedom.

Looking for a historical romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat from page 1 until the very end? Tide and Tempest is the book for you. No, really. It is. This is one historical I wholeheartedly recommend and one you won't want to miss.
This is book 3 in the Edge of Freedom series, but don't worry if you haven't picked up the first 2 yet (you will, though, once you've finished this read). The story still makes sense and wraps up in a very satisfying ending.
My favorite character? Captain Keondric Morgan is a hubba-hubba kind of hero. Not that he's perfect, mind you, but that just makes him all the more real.
Author Elizabeth Ludwig's writing really shines in Tide and Tempest. Do yourself a favor and snatch up a copy today. You won't be sorry.

A thoroughly enjoyable novel, Tide and Tempest has a great blend of my favorite elements. Full of history, mystery, suspense, and a sincere romance, this read had a little bit of everything that my reading-heart could desire.
The characters were portrayed in a realistic way, and I related so much with their internal conflicts. Both Tillie and Captain Morgan carried burdens of guilt and responsibility inside, and while the external conflict swirled with danger and intrigue, the internal conflict made these characters come alive for me. I also liked that their problems weren’t solved by romance or “insta-love.” They had to deal with those internal struggles first before letting someone into their heart and move on with their lives.
I liked the pace of the plot too. It strikes a nice balance between character interaction and action scenes. I appreciated that the suspenseful moments made sense and flowed well. Sometimes I think that action sequences are a little jumbled and confusing, but here I didn’t find anything like that.
I loved the atmosphere of the setting, especially the boarding house where Tillie lived. The entire setting was well-done from the dress shop where Tillie worked, to the apothecary shop in a rather unsavory part of town. There was a distinctive quality to each place in the story.
Another sign of a great read is when the secondary characters come to life – for me, this character was Captain Morgan’s brother, Cass. In fact, I think he deserves his own story, and I am sort of hoping that some of the events that took place in this story are set up for him to have his own story one day!
I am a sucker for dashing captains, especially if they hail from Ireland, and a roguish brother is not too bad either (wink, wink). The ending wraps everything up nicely, though not without some tension and heartache getting there. I was happy to get a happily-ever-after.
This is my first read by Elizabeth Ludwig, and it definitely won’t be my last! I am going to start by saying that this is one of the best covers I have seen this year. The scene on the cover and the colors are beautiful. The picture of the hero is also accurate and fits the description that is in the novel. Next, I would like to add that I have not read the other books in this Edge of Freedom series, yet I had absolutely no problem following the storyline. In fact, this book has now opened my eyes to a new author and I plan to go read her other books as well. I love it when that happens!
Tide and Tempest is a fascinating story. It is full of very interesting characters, some of whom find themselves in imminent danger. The heroine, Tillie, carries quite a bit of guilt and has trouble believing that she could be deserving of anyone’s love. Captain Morgan and his younger brother, Cass, also have developing feelings toward Tillie. This is quite the enthralling love triangle.
I also loved the fact that this book is filled with men and women who have come over from Ireland. The author does a wonderful job of writing in that special Irish accent, without it being overdone. It is just enough that I could hear their Irish brogue but not be distracted by it. This was such a well-written book and I could tell that I was really going to enjoy the author’s writing style even as early as twenty-five pages into the story. I recommend this book to those who love historical fiction, romance and suspense.

This book was an interesting one about Irish immigrants and the Fenian movement in Ireland. Murders, conspiracies, romance, it had it all. I found it to be a very good read.

The suspense in this novel!
I never could guess where we were going next, who could be trusted, or how it would all end. Well, that's not exactly true--I knew Tillie and Morgan could be trusted, and I cheered for them to trust in their love for each other.
Besides that, I enjoyed that I was constantly guessing who the mysterious antagonist could be, whether friends who seemed trustworthy were true, and how the conflict between the determined Fenians could be resolved.
The love triangle was well-crafted, too, to never seem cheesy, forced, or overdone. In fact, I'll say (refraining from spoilers) that it makes for a very satisfying resolution of the conflict between Tillie and Morgan in the end.
What I Didn't Like As Much
At times the very suspense I loved confused me slightly; sometimes it took me a moment to remember who exactly certain people were. But these moments were few and really just drove home the reality of how broad a scope of a story this was!
Why I Recommend This Book
This is exactly the kind of book I love to read. Suspenseful and intriguing, with a dash of romance and a boatload of history to hold it all together! I heartily enjoyed learning more about the mysterious Fenians (an Irish faction I had never been introduced to before).
I just adore when I am granted an invitation to a new chapter of history that I haven't yet read. Tide and Tempest did that for me. I heartily recommend this book to those who love Ireland, history, and page-flying reads!

As always, Elizabeth did a fabulous job bringing us reader’s into the atmosphere and feeling of what she was writing about. I’ve loved that about this series.
The first book remains my favourite, but this one was still well written.
I wasn’t entirely fond of Morgan, as his personality just didn’t attract me, but that aside, I would definitely recommend to those who love romantic historical suspense.

A nice finish to this trilogy. While each can stand alone, I think I would have read them quicker to keep the plot and story going along. A great cast of characters.
A dashing Irish sea captain and his comic relief brother help solve the murder of one of his passengers and falls in love with the girlfriend who is supposed to hold the secret. Murder, mystery, and intrigue surround Tillie as they try to protect her and solve who's trying to murder her.

Two years ago, Captain Keondric Morgan delivered the grieving Tillie McGrath to the steps of a boardinghouse in New York. Yet, he's not been able to get her out of his mind. When a deathbed confession from a member of his crew reveals that the death of Tillie's fiance may not have been the illness she was led to believe but murder, Morgan decides to check up on Tillie. Tillie McGrath came to America from Ireland wanting a new life with the man she loved. Yet both his death and the death of her baby have shaken her to the core. The faith that she once claimed is now a bitter shell. When Captain Morgan appears on her doorstep with the startling news that her fiance was murdered, Tillie is of course shocked. Together the pair sets out to discover the truth behind the claims of murder. When they unknowingly stir up a hornet's nest, Tillie's safety becomes paramount for Morgan. This is by far my favorite one of this series! I'm so glad that I didn't let the lack of connection I had with the characters from the first book dampen my enjoyment of either books two or three!
I found that this book was very suspense filled. It was good to get answers to questions that arose from the first two books. I'm not sure if this is the conclusion of the series or not. I kinda hope it's not as I'd love to see Cass's story. I loved the way that Morgan went above and beyond to ensure the safety of his brother and Tillie. I also loved how he was willing to sacrifice his own happiness to ensure that the woman he loved was happy.
I loved Tillie's struggle to find herself worthy of others. She had to come to the point where she realized that the mistakes she made in her life were not a stopper on her future. Yet once she realized that the decisions she made in the past did not have to stop her future, she was free. She recognized the truth of needing to surrender.
Overall, while I'm glad I'd read the others first, I found this one to be truly enjoyable. It was by far my favorite of the series. That could be that the characters were more fleshed out.

Stories involving Fenians have always been of interest to me ever since I heard the Catalpa story (don't know it? Check it out - it's a fantastic story). When I learned of the Edge of Freedom series months ago I was so intrigued I was tempted to purchase book one. While debating that very important question for all those months along came the opportunity to read Tide and Tempest. Needless to say I jumped at it. The mouse couldn't click quick enough. So here we are. It's the end of the line....and sad to say I did not enjoy this book as much as I had hoped and really tried to. Ships, sailors, Irish immigration, mystery, Fenians -what more could a girl ask for? Apparently more. The story had some rip-roaring sections ranging from chases through dark alleys to deadly encounters with unidentified assailants (SPOILER ALERT: What's up with some of the bad guys and their need to identify themselves to Keondric as they prepare to kill him just before they bite the dust?), but I really wasn't drawn into the story. On the other hand I think I can recommend Tide and Tempest to friends with little hesitation. I know I will still be on the lookout for the first two books in the series.

The Captain of "Caitriona Marie" stands on deck remembering a young woman from two yrs ago that lost her husband and he helped her find a place to live in a New York boarding house. Now he hopes to find her after he finds out that the death of her man was not illness but murder. A deathbed confession has led to this knowlege and now the Dr that treated him has admitted to murder, asking forgivness.
Keondric Morgan has never forgotten the lass and feels a deep need to make sure she is alright. Could she be in danger too?
Tilly McGrath has fared well at the boardinghouse and even saved some monies and hopes she can start an orphanage with it. She feels she is not worthy to wed and have children of her own.... She is quite surprised to see the Captain again but likes that he has came to see her and see if she is ok. truth be known she has thought of him from time to time too.

This is the third book in the series, Edge of Freedom. Even though I did not read the first two books, I thought it was fine as a stand alone. I didn't feel I missed much other than the history of a few characters.
The story was good and moved along at a nice pace. I did, however, have a tough time believing the people were as ill prepared as they were when facing so many dangerous situations. None of them seemed to think things through before they would leap into action.
The characters were likeable enough and I enjoyed the novel. I think it could have been a lot better had it been more believable.

The story was good and moved along at a nice pace. I did, however, have a tough time believing the people were as ill prepared as they were when facing so many dangerous situations. None of them seemed to think things through before they would leap into action.
The characters were likeable enough and I enjoyed the novel. I think it could have been a lot better had it been more believable.

Again, this book should have been 500 pages!
The type of story is vastly different from the other two, somehow...perhaps because of the hero being a happy sea captain. It gives quite the flavor of sea salt to the tale...
I loved knowing more about young Tilly. She'd begun to come out of her shell in the second book, and now she really begins to blossom. Of course there are the usual elements of danger and suspense from the ongoing villain of the first two books, but now they come ever closer to him and make some truly shocking discoveries.
I would have loved getting to have at least a chapter of epilogue of when the characters from the other books return to the now-safe city after the end of the story. But that was my only complaint.

The cover is beautiful, and is, in all honesty, what made me buy this book.
A very sweet story with masterful storytelling and suspense. Each of the characters will win you over and have you cheering for them all the way.
There were a couple of "fast forward" parts, (kissing) but other than that it was a great story.

I just wanted the series to end by this point. And the heroine's struggle with feelings of worthiness because of past sins didn't connect with me. And the hero kept trying to sacrifice his own feelings for his brother. It all felt like these themes had been overdone.

The third book of the Edge of Freedom series kept my attention a bit more than the previous two. I struggled to keep reading through though so I had some kind of disconnect from the story. There were repeated themes from the previous books but the ongoing mystery was finally solved and you got your happy ending. Siblings loving the same woman, major moments of miscommunication, sacrificing your love for someone thinking you know "what is best" as you encourage them to love another, careless choices from those who typically seem intelligent, and some other elements of the story I struggled with. The time period and learning a bit about the Fenians and following the political maneuvering were the things that kept me reading. I have learned I need more of the historical part of my historical fiction books and less of the romantic drama.

What a great series ! I would have enjoyed all three couples gathering together at the end for Tillie and Keondric's wedding. The way the mystery was solved concerning the ring , and how that led to the revelation of what really happened to Rourke's father , was believable . It also would have been neat to see if Laverne and Giles finally get together . ;)

An amazing conclusion and my favorite in this series, Tide and Tempest was a fast-paced wide-eyed read. Tight with intrigue, fraught with tension, riddled with questions, and finally brimming with answers, you'll find it hard to put this one down! I look forward to reading more by this author. (Someone please let me know if she writes the rest of Cass's story!)

It took me a while to finish this, because I had to take a break from it for a few weeks. It was good, the idea of it was, but not amazing. I’m happy to have read it and be done with it now. I like that they were Irish, and it was a Christian historical romance, but don’t was very slow as far as the mystery in it. I’m not big on mysteries. But it was sweet.

Over all the I enjoyed the Edge of Freedom series from Elizabeth Ludwig, but sometimes I feel that series are purposely dragged out to make the needed number of books, and that is how I felt with this book. I never quite engaged with it as much as I did the earlier books.

Though the metal was worn with age, two clasped hands were clearly visible--one larger and obviously masculine, the other smaller and more delicate. Female. Twisting slightly, Tillie dislodged the two clasped hands, spreading the ring so it became two distinct bands, and beneath them a third band upon which a glittering ruby shaped like a heart lay hidden. The sight never failed to rob her of her breath. Where Braedon had come by the ring or how much it was worth, she didn't know, but it belonged to him, and she'd vowed never to part with it.

Realizing vacancies left from Breda, Deidre, Cara, and now Ana leaving the boardinghouse, empty rooms have left Mrs. Matheson low on funds. Tillie sets aside her plans so as not to cause an additional vacancy. Tillie designs hats for Mrs. Ferguson at her millinery shop. Successfully replicating society magazine styles from memory, she has brought added business to the shop and is given an overseeing position and raise in her wages. Along with serving with the nuns at the shelter for the evening meals, Tillie has settled in since her arrival to New York from Ireland two years earlier. Thankful to the captain of the Caitriona Marie for setting her in this good lodging in the city, amid her sorrow in the death of her fiancé, Braedon McKillop, aboard his ship in the crossing.
Captain Keondric Morgan has returned to New York hearing a deathbed confession on the ship revealing that passenger Braedon's death wasn't an accidental illness but planned and carried out slowly. With the intent of going to see Tillie to let her know of the truth he has newly learned, he is unable to deliver his message but instead asks to return her to Ireland to her family via his ship. She declines. Upon repairs needing to be accomplished before returning to his next voyage, he and his first mate and brother, Cass, rent rooms at the boardinghouse. Not only helping Mrs. Matheson, they both become further interested in spending time with Tillie with their nearness.
The further motive is to keep Tillie safe. While discussing repairs and the time it will take, the brothers talk about Tillie and a crew member is listening on the other side of the door. Sabotage from a trusted mate who has connections with The Celt?
Brilliant writing with in-depth detail!
Fully developed, Tide and Tempest reveals the heart of those trying to save Ireland's freedom from England, those trying to profit from it, and those trying to stay alive! Author Elizabeth Ludwig has brought this story full around concluding the Edge of Freedom series. I especially liked the relationship between the two brothers and Tillie. So respectful and friendship building, the three will be able to be friends for a long time. Very satisfactory ending for all three of them as their future lies before them. I was watching a couple of the characters, wondering if they were friend or foe? I trusted one and was uncertain of the other ~ they turned out to be reversed from what I thought they would be! A surprise to me was The Celt being an acquaintance in Ireland with an unsuspected character.

Adventure abounds in this final novel as the Edge of Freedom series concludes. Tide and Tempest may be read as a standalone but you will want to become further acquainted with those in the earlier Book 1, No Safe Harbor and Book 2, Dark Road Home.

Tide and Tempest
is the third book in the Edge of Freedom series. Book 1, No Safe Harbor, is about Cara Hamilton and Rourke Walsh and takes place mostly in America. Book 2, Dark Road Home, is about Ana Kavanagh and Eoghan Hamilton, Cara's brother. His desire was to join the Fenians organized in New York City.The three books share the time frame from the late 19th century and roots in Ireland. The presence of an underground revolutionary movement--a group called the Fenians--adds historical context, an element of danger, and suspense.
While there is mention of the above named characters of the first two books in the Tide and Tempest , the individual stories are only loosely associated with each other. I have not read the first two books of the series, but the third book seems to be able to stand alone very well.
For the back story, Tillie McGrath traveled overseas from Ireland with her fiance Braedon, who was a secret member of the Fenians. Unfortunately, Braedon didn't survive the voyage and once Tillie arrived in the city, she had been forced to fend for herself. She found lodging at Amelia Matheson's boardinghouse and work with a milliner making hats. In her spare time, she worked at a local church's homeless shelter. Some of her hard work was a means to work off a guilty conscience for a secret she never divulged to her friends in America.
At the opening of this tale, it is two years after her arrival in America and Captain Keondric Morgan, of the ship she crossed over on, had come to pay her a visit. Unfortunately it wasn't a social call. Captain Morgan had just discovered that the death of Tillie's fiance was not due to illness but a planned murder. Captain Morgan was determined to find the reason because not only had Braedon perished, but someone had killed the ship's doctor and a shipmate, Donal, as well. What if Tillie's life was also in danger by association?
In a sprint against time, the Captain and his brother Cass set out to protect Tillie's life just in time to prevent her death in several bizarre "accidents." Their intense investigations only led to more and more questions, until Tillie admitted that when she had visited her fiance in his final moments he had given her a ring with instructions to take it to a member of the Fenians and ask for help. The key to solving the mystery of the murders was in the finely crafted ring.
Before I read this book, I had never heard of the Fenians before. So I looked up their history and found it fascinating. I enjoy learning something new in historical fiction pieces like this. Another thing I enjoyed about the book is the way the author developed the relationship between Cass Morgan and his brother Keondric Morgan. As they faced the challenges of keeping Tillie McGrath safe and solving the mystery of the ring, their relationship grew as they gained respect for each other. Keondric realized his little brother was becoming a responsible man in his own right.
I also loved how the author created a slow burning relationship between Tillie and Keondric fraught with uncertainties. Theirs was a complex relationship, and the author fully develops moments of attraction and conflict between them. Eventually, the depth of feeling he has for her is demonstrated in a more powerful way than anything he could have said. Between the nail biting suspenseful moments and the tentative romance developing in the main characters, the author takes the reader for quite an emotional roller coaster ride, especially toward the end of the book. If you enjoy historical romantic suspense novels, then you will enjoy this book.

Sometimes the hardest thing to deal with besides the loss of love is trying to find a way to move forward and find a way just to get through the day. But for Tillie McGrath, she's still carrying the past around with her trying to find a way to make restitution for her unforgiven sin. When she arrived in America two years ago with her fiancè Braedon McKillop, she had hoped for a much different life than the one she received. Leaving Ireland against her parents wishes and running away with Braedon promised her a life of love and adventure. But life would rob her of all that happiness. Braedon died during their trip aboard Caitriona Marie leaving her alone and with their child. They never even had a chance to be married, but no one else knew that. It seemed that this life was due to be and she even lost her baby never having had the chance to get to know her.
Tillie now feels that looking back it was a series of bad mistakes that God is punishing her for and vows to do anything she can to get back into His good graces again, volunteering at the local church, and attempting to open a orphanage to help care for the cities children in an effort to earn her penance. But when Captain Keondric Morgan returns after two years to check on her welfare, she isn't quite sure what to make of concerns. But Captain Morgan has never forgotten Tillie and even he carries a guilt that he must now resolve. During a deathbed confession of the ship's doctor, he learns that Braedon's death wasn't an accident, he was murdered by the doctor. I must add the beginning of the book started out really slow for me and I struggled to find a rhythm to keep on going through the novel. However by the time you get through the first handful of chapters you get hooked. I haven't had the pleasure of reading the first two books in this series, but I was able to pick this one up and get an idea of what happened earlier thanks to Elizabeth's introduction in the beginning chapters of this novel. Perhaps that is why it was so hard at the beginning to get into. However, that being said I would rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars in my opinion.

Tide and Tempest is the third book is the Edge of Freedom series. Along with a gorgeous cover, Ludwig has written a gorgeous story that blends mystery, suspense, secrets being reveal with a touch of romance. This is story that you should have on your bookshelves or e-book reader shelves. It's an exquisite and wonderful read.
My Thoughts
I want to start off by mentioning what a beautiful cover. Plus, extra brownie points for the cover having the male protagonist instead of the female. Now there is nothing wrong with having a woman on the cover of the book, but sometimes it's just nice to gaze at the cover and sigh. (Oh goodness was that too much information? Haha. Continuing on.) Yes, the cover has this detailed background and the color choices just makes this cover just a little more flashier and caught my eye.
Story wise, I absolutely enjoy Ludwig's writing style. It has the perfect combination of everything that I listed above: mystery, suspense, secrets and romance. I just love it all! Give me more please! But yeah I flew through this book because I had to know the ending. The unending amount of intrigue had me gripping the book willing myself to read just a tiny bit faster. The pace of the book really started to kick in around page 50ish which was a little hard for me, but other than that it was really easy and fast to read plus enjoyable.
Romance wise I thought it had similar situations of books that I have read before. It was still a good read and the relationship forming from friendship to relationship-status was well written, but I still couldn't help but feel I had read in multiple stories the same type of set up where the young lady volunteers to find out the secrets, the man in love with her goes after her, she gets put in a bind and is held against her will, he gets injured trying to save her, etc, etc. Still, I find that with Ludwig's writing it didn't bother as much as if I was reading another author I might have just whizzed a little bit faster through those pages because I could probably figure it out. However, the romance still make my heart do a little flutter towards the end of the book and I hope it does for you too.
I highly recommend this book if you have read the previous two! I have a feeling there might be another one because there was one character I would love to read about (*cough* Cass *cough*). Definitely something you'll want to check out!

Now there is nothing wrong with having a woman on the cover of the book, but sometimes it's just nice to gaze at the cover and sigh. (Oh goodness was that too much information? Haha. Continuing on.) Yes, the cover has this detailed background and the color choices just makes this cover just a little more flashier and caught my eye.
Story wise, I absolutely enjoy Ludwig's writing style. It has the perfect combination of everything that I listed above: mystery, suspense, secrets and romance. I just love it all! Give me more please! But yeah I flew through this book because I had to know the ending. The unending amount of intrigue had me gripping the book willing myself to read just a tiny bit faster. The pace of the book really started to kick in around page 50ish which was a little hard for me, but other than that it was really easy and fast to read plus enjoyable.
Romance wise I thought it had similar situations of books that I have read before. It was still a good read and the relationship forming from friendship to relationship-status was well written, but I still couldn't help but feel I had read in multiple stories the same type of set up where the young lady volunteers to find out the secrets, the man in love with her goes after her, she gets put in a bind and is held against her will, he gets injured trying to save her, etc, etc. Still, I find that with Ludwig's writing it didn't bother as much as if I was reading another author I might have just whizzed a little bit faster through those pages because I could probably figure it out. However, the romance still make my heart do a little flutter towards the end of the book and I hope it does for you too.
I highly recommend this book if you have read the previous two! I have a feeling there might be another one because there was one character I would love to read about (*cough* Cass *cough*). Definitely something you'll want to check out!

Excellent end to the series - 4 ½ stars
Tide and Tempest is the final book in Elizabeth Ludwig’s Edge of Freedom series and I’m sorry to see it end! I loved Roarke, Cara, Eoghan, Ana, Tillie, and now Keondric! I became so attached to them! They were like great friends! But, the wonderful thing about books is that I can go back and “visit” them again.
I had loved Tillie’s character since the beginning and couldn’t wait to see where Elizabeth would take her story. I’m very happy to say that it was even better than I had imagined. The new members of the cast were interesting and everyone was well rounded. I hope Cass one day receives his own story! I loved him! (sorry if that is a spoiler)
Keondric may have been my favorite hero, I’m not sure. Though I did love Roarke and Eoghan, too. He was the prefect match for Tillie and brought out the best in her, which was fun to see, since she was rather quiet in the other books.
This is a book about forgiveness and surrendering our plans to God. Tillie had spent the last 10 months of her life feeling guilty and believing God would punish her for her past, or that she must pay penance for her sins. She had to learn that when God forgives, it is gone. He washes the sin away, never to be thought of again. She also had to learn how to forgive herself. I enjoyed watching her thoughts and actions go through a transformation as this knowledge finally sunk in. She was finally free of her past, free to dream of a future.
Keondric had to learn to surrender to God. He tried so hard to make everything work and to be responsible for everyone, but it wasn’t working. Only God can take a mess and untangle it. He alone knows the future and how everything will play out. Seeing Keondric finally surrender his control was fantastic!
I loved the strong spiritual themes. These are things so many of us need to learn, or perhaps simply remember.
Elizabeth’s writing was superb! The descriptions were so real, that I often felt as though I was actually there, running through the streets with them, or peering over someone’s shoulder as I add my two cents to the plan!
My only complaint is that the story seemed a bit slow at first, as I tried to keep up with shifting view points and directions changing as she sculpted the story. Though, after a couple chapters it began making more sense, as I caught up and I was quickly absorbed in it!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical romance and suspense! Though, I would suggest reading the others in the series first.

I am given opportunities to review books and was thrilled to read Elizabeth Ludwig’s newest novel, Tide and Tempest.
I knew I was getting a historical romantic suspense and was transported into the world of Irish immigrants and their struggle to fight for their country’s freedom as well as adapt to life in a the new world of America.
It’s been two years since Tillie McGrath left her Irish home, against the wishes of her parents, to travel with her fiancee to America. He died before they could arrive and Tillie has forged a new life for herself, moving past her grief and loss and personal shame over some of her own choices. She now lives in New York boardinghouse, has a steady job and plans to open an orphanage. Maybe she would never marry and have children of her own, but she would care for others. Living a life of hard work and service in an effort to purge her soul of her own sins, her life comes to an abrupt change.
Captain Keondrick Morgan had never forgotten the young Irish lass who had been heartbroken on his ship. Following a life of duty though, precludes marriage. When he discovers that Tillie’s fiancee had been murdered, he worries now that maybe whoever did it might also be after Tillie. Morgan will do everything in his power to keep the invisible threat from succeeding.
Accompanied by his younger brother, Cass, Morgan struggles with stronger feelings for Tillie, who he believes he can never have. At the same time he starts to unravel a threat more deadly than he ever expected. Now he will do everything in his power to keep Tillie safe, even if it means giving his own life or losing her to the affections of his charming brother.
This book starts out slow as it builds the characters and the rich picture of the evil that is simmering behind the scenes. There is a light touch given to the faith of the characters. It is most fun when things really start to move forward with the action and the complexity of the underground societies that exist and could eventually bring about the demise of them all.
With a beautiful ending this book qualifies as a happily-ever-after. If you love historicals and some suspense, this is a great read.

Having loved Ludwig's last two novels in this series, I knew I would love this one! The only thing disappointing was the NetGalley version was missing the letter f's in words such as 'stiffened' and 'difficult' and many others throughout, and still I managed to really enjoy the book. That is testament to a good story, people! I loved the setting where once again we are transported back in time to the old time New York where it seems Irishman are a dime a dozen. They are a mixture of good and evil, and you never knew who to trust when it comes to the Fenians.
Our heroine Tillie was a member of the boardinghouse in the last book when we met her as a grieving waif-like of a girl and Captain Morgan feels responsible for her loved one's death aboard his ship. He begins to realize that there are many mysteries that begin to twist around him that all lead back to that first death on his ship. Tillie is a target, and Morgan and his brother are determined to protect Tillie as she has no one else in New York to do so.
Though the previous characters are supporting of the big picture and we are focused on another set of new characters with this intriguing Irish in America tale there is a lot of a political slant with many different names to sort through. If you haven't read the first two in the series then this book may be a bit confusing to understand when it comes to the Fenians and their movement. If you have kept up with the series, this next installment won't disappoint as the writing style is fluid and fast paced. Though I would have liked a bit more details of the previous characters (Ana and Cara are simply mentioned), the story holds its own and makes reading it worthwhile. The faith theme is tiny and barely noticeable as it focuses on Morgan's sacrifice, and while there is a lot of love for our main characters I would have enjoyed a bit more on brother Cass and have to wonder if there is another book coming in the series. It seems that since the big picture of the Celt is finally cleared up this may be the last one but we can always hope!

A wonderful combination of setting, story and romantic suspense! "Tide and Tempest" lives up to every expectation; possibly being the best in Elizabeth Ludwig's very enjoyable "Edge of Freedom" series.
Tillie McGrath never expected to see Captain Keondric Morgan again; two years have passed since he transported her and her fiancé Braedon McKillop from Ireland to America. Only Tillie arrived alone; Braedon having died en route from a mysterious illness. Breaking ship protocol, the captain had kindly allowed Tillie to hear her fiancé's final words and then arranged lodging and respectable connections for her, upon arrival in New York City. But Captain Morgan returns to the once grief-stricken young woman with shocking news; Braedon's death was no accident; he had been murdered.
Keondric Morgan is just as entranced with Tillie McGrath upon meeting her for the second time. Determined to make amends for her loss upon his ship, he seeks her out and becomes adamant about protecting her while he investigates her fiancé's murder. Enlisting the assistance of his brother, Cass, the two men postpone their departure from New York and reside in the same boardinghouse as Tillie, in order to protect her from inevitable danger.
When Tillie and Keondric learn that the ring left in Tillie's possession might hold the key to Braedon's death, their inquiries set into motion a series of murderous events that eventually lead them to the person responsible for not only Braedon's death, but the death of many others within the revolutionary Fenian organization.
Subtly and softly a romance takes root within this action packed series of events. Tillie finds herself drawn to the intense and passionate ship captain, while befriending his charming, light hearted younger brother. When a love triangle ensues, all three must make life-changing decisions of the heart.
This is a well-written story, with many twist and turns; culminating with a satisfying conclusion. I thoroughly enjoyed being an early influencer and look forward to many more great books from Elizabeth Ludwig.
