Changing the Station: How One Stray Dog Found Its Purpose

Rate this book
Sometimes our strongest bonds are forged in the unlikeliest of places.

Big changes are coming to an old train station hotel that George Baxter converted into apartments fifty years ago. The catalyst is a stray dog named Gracie, searching for a place called heaven and a reunion with the mama who tragically left him orphaned and alone.

It isn’t easy finding your way in an unfamiliar world of humans. They hide their hearts, they don’t say what they mean, and they don’t sniff butts. Unconditional love apparently has certain conditions for all but the very young.

Grumpy old George reluctantly rescues the irresistible canine, and much to the dog’s dismay, names him Gracie. Dogs need a purpose in life. So, with an open heart and a touch of canine intuition, Gracie weaves a web of connections among the diverse cast of characters residing within the building.

Get your copy now and take a journey with Gracie to discover the transformative power of friendship and love, and the extraordinary ways in which a stray dog can become the heart and soul of a community.

After years of working in the banking industry in The Finger Lakes Region of Central New York, David Homick left his suits behind for a more casual gig as a freelance Web Designer. He loves the creative aspect of his work, which was not something that was encouraged growing up. Perhaps it’s all that pent up creative energy that has motivated him to express himself now between the covers of a book.

Homick weaves a touch of metaphysical wisdom and inspiration into intriguing, suspenseful, contemporary love stories and mysteries. He believes that fiction should do more than entertain. Good fiction causes us to see ourselves and our world in a different light, creating an emotional resonance that remains with us long after the final page has been read.

Many readers will in some way identify with his characters, whose outer circumstances and inner demons stand in the way of the love and sense of belonging that they seek. Their journeys have many twists and turns, and at times seems hopeless, but through perseverance they learn the key to building meaningful relationships and creating the life they ultimately deserve. Of course, we should never rule out a clever twist of fate or subtle divine intervention along the way.

One of the underlying themes of his writing, as well as his life, was inspired by a favorite quote from George Eliot. "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Every dog lover is sure to appreciate this heart-warming story told from the perspective of Gracie, a dog of undetermined breed, but clearly something special. Gracie steals the hearts (and an occasional cucumber) of most everyone he (yes, he- it’s part of the story) meets, including the psychic neighbor’s cat. It turns out that particularly open minded people (like small children) can communicate telepathically with animals. This ability proves to be invaluable in allowing Gracie to help people in important ways, while fulfilling his own purpose. From the first page, wild horses couldn’t stop me from reading more!

What a delightful story from the dog telling the story! Very loving, compassionate, just probably how hus dog really thinks’ and how cute too! Sadness in losing family and friends is part of growing, but it also gives lessons learned. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves dogs! A very happy ending is a positive thing that comes out of those story! Enjoy!
