Mecklenburg Monsters #5

No Bones About It

Rate this book
Fifer Ione is an asexual selkie. She likes sexual fantasy, and she wants to fall in love. Only, erm, without the touching parts. Without the fluids parts. Without the gross, real parts. Just the good stuff.

When Hollis Mac appears at open mic night at the Meck and reveals that his skeletal face means he lacks skin, so he lacks, you know, anything gross, she can’t help but feel as if he’s what she’s been waiting for her whole life.

Except Hollis is some ancient fae thing, exiled and odd, very wealthy, very aloof. He doesn’t think he’s quite capable of love, only desire, endless and aching and exploitive. His kind, he says, only want to devour things, especially pretty young things like her.

But she trusts him.

Or anyway, she’s curious enough to risk it.

Some things are worth the risk.

This book doesn’t depict a lot of actual, physical intercourse. But it does depict a lot of shared fantasy about intercourse, and since it’s a book, are we splitting hairs here? Content vampire blood play and biting, breeding, capture, spanking, and soothing during noncon.

Fifer is a musician who knows exactly who she is a bisexual, asexual selkie with no interest in the complications of love or sex. But when she crosses paths with Hollis, an ancient fae with a skeletal form and a mysterious past, who is drawn to Fifer for her strength and individuality, her life takes an unexpected turn. Despite his eerie appearance, Hollis and Fifer form a deep connection, bonding over music and their shared outsider status. As their relationship deepens, Hollis reveals his true nature as a fae exiled from Faerie for killing one of the Unseelie Queen's sons. Being exiled has left Hollis trapped in a skeletal form, unable to fully experience the world of mortals, and he will do whatever it takes to be with Fifer, and is willing to sacrifice anything to do so. Fifer and Hollis explore the dynamics of their complex relationship of asexuality, power, and love, even as they have to face their deepest fears and desires. With the help of an old friend, Ross, and a risky ancient ritual, they embark on a journey that will test the limits of love, identity, and sacrifice. But when Hollis is in danger, Fifer must risk everything to save the man she loves. Fantasy romance exploring love, sacrifice, and the power of choosing one's path, even when it defies societal norms, to build a unique style of life. An interesting read, I'm just not sure this one was for me.

Fifer and Hollis meet at open mic night and both like music and are intrigued and interested in each other but not in the usual expected way. Instead this is a more fantasy story in more ways then can expect and kind of makes you rethink what sex and partnership is and could be. But besides that, it was actually a bit funny at times with some trouble and danger and odd twists too I did not see coming. These two were a riot at times and other times made me shake my head but it did make for a fun and interesting read.

I couldn't finish the book. I felt all the talk about the heroine's asexuality was repetitive. She regularly masturbates, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. But she finds the idea of real sex with another person repulsive. She kissed a guy before and said it was awful.

She is surprised by her attraction to the hero. He tells her in one of their first conversations, that he does not have any genitals. He is an immortal fae and was exiled.

She is excited that he doesn't have genitals. He asks if he can taste her feelings while she touches herself. He has the ability to project images into her mind that he sees too. So it is a shared fantasy.

It just was not my cup of tea. The writing was good. I just wasn't interested in this idea.
