Dead Men Tell No Tales

Embalmer’s assistant Imogene Lynch may or may not get the final sensations of the dead when she touches their hair. She used to, but something strange is going on.

Her sixth sense disappears when the body of a local treasure hunter shows up at Greener Pastures Mortuary. But that doesn’t keep her from becoming embroiled in two bone-chilling mysteries.

Her boss’s lover is awol, and a tipsy ghost is giving her the hiccups. Someone’s been murdered. She dearly hopes it’s not the missing woman.

All clues lead to Catalina Island where rumors of a pirate’s buried treasure seem to have incited a gold rush. When Imogene stumbles into a viper’s nest, she discovers the dead aren’t the only ones with secrets.

If you can imagine Agatha Raisin as a twenty-something, rockabilly, ex-hairstylist with a weird connection to the dead, this book is for you.

It's another day at the Greener Pastures Mortuary except Alphonso is out of it. His mind is not on his work and he wants Imogene to take over except she in not trained. Somehow they get into a little pushing and Im touches the deceased mans hair without protection on. Oh no, she starts hiccupping. Why is this happening? You need to read to find out this next adventure of Im and El along with others over in Catalina. It was a fun read and I was very surprised by the ending. I enjoy this series and as always await the next installment.

Splitting Hairs, part of the Mortician Murders series, is another great read from Greta Boris. It is a perfect balance of being lighthearted but with a serious page turning mystery. The characters are entertaining, especially Imogene and Alphonso’s interactions which had me laughing out loud. The story is fast-paced and thrilling with all its twists and turns. I look forward to the next book in this incredible series. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

This one is so different from all the preceding novels in the series. A new experience for Imogene and a closer bonding with some of the other characters. Loved it. The best part from my perspective was that there is still an ongoing mystery to solve which means more novels to come.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins with Alphonso down in the dumps since his girlfriend Fredericka has gone missing. Omogene on arriving at Green Pastures wound up stopping Alphonso from embalming the wrong person. The person that Alphonso was supposed to do was still in the refrigerator. Alphonso got up and left Imogene handling things. As iy yurnrf out Hip, the man on the table, was still alive so they called for an ambulance. Since this incident happened, Alphonso left still leaving a body to be embalmed. Imogene asked who was going to do the embalming and was told she would. Imogene decided to talk to Alphonso to hve him come back.

Imogene was able to talk to Alphonso, but she had to promise to look for Fredericka. She agreed to this task. At the same time she was beginning to start her search, she discovered that El would not be able to help. He had been accepted to the police academy and would be starting the following Monday. In addition to this information Hap, the body that was still alive, returned back to the funeral home the following day. Because of the effect that Imogene got from touching Hap's hair, she also needed to discover who killed Hap.

Read along and discover how she and her cousin, Chelsea, searched with no luck on Catalina finding Fredericka. because that is the last place she went. In addition to Fredericka, her neice Isabelle was also missing. Imogene and Chelsa left, but both returned later. Chellsea along with her dog George on a search and rescue mission, while Imogine went to look for Fredericka and Isabelle. Discover why the two were in hiding as well as who killed Hap. The ending will reveal all.

Mortician's assistant interprets a message from a dead guy - 4 stars

Imogene Lynch has been leery of touching the hair of her customers -- she has been haunted by the spirits of the recently dead about their demise. This time, Imogene has to deal with her boss's girlfriend's disappearance, an almost dead, almost corpse, and her squeamishness about performing her first embalming job.

There were plenty of puns and sayings that her grandparents were fond of. The story moves quickly and is helped along by a sinister element lurking just below the surface. While Imogene tries to calm her instincts to intervene in what seems to be a crime, she still acts impetuously displaying much more curiosity than her cat.

Hip Buchard wasn't quite dead when he arrived at the Greener Pastures Funeral Home. Hip was related to a famous pirate who worked in Southern California. Because pirates are noted for burying some of their treasure, Hip was involved with some "detectorists" who were trying to find buried treasure using modern technology and a bit of digging.

This time Hip's spirit causes Imogene to appear to be drunk -- a comedy for the reader but not pleasant for Imogene. Many humorous incidents were combined with the desperados who wanted to liberate the treasure. Imogene's boyfriend, El, was a great source of information from the local sheriff's office. El still rates as a top marriage prospect, providing a break from the day-to-day tasks of mortician school and a missing person or two.

Splitting Hairs is a humorous detective story that is nicely intertwined with a thin cover of romance. Enjoy!

The remarkably well-behaved corpse didn't emit a spectral vibe, leaving mortician's assistant Imogene Lynch somewhat relieved. Then the corpse came back to life, and that was the start of her problems...

Opening a book in the excellent Mortician Murders series is like slipping through the front door after coming home from a long holiday. Greeting the main characters after a lengthy absence is just a wonderfully comforting feeling. (Though, to be fair, it hasn't been that long since the last book, but I missed Im!) One of the fantastic aspects of this series is that the characters are not static. Rather than stagnating, they develop and evolve.

The bones of the book -the mystery- is as delicious as always. Not to give anything away, but this particular plot had me rigid with tension. For readers who tend to bite their nails, a word of advice - don't get a manicure in advance.

Finally, a word about the cover: so hauntingly beautiful! I was able to see it in full colour the other day, and it left me blown away. They say "Don't Read a Book by its Cover" and while that's true, I urge the readers to drink in the detail of the artwork. It truly does the story proud.

Highly recommended for cosy readers, especially those who love a sprinkle of the paranormal.

Thank you to Greta Boris and Bookfunnel for the chance to read this eARC. As always, my opinions are my own, honest and true.

In this episode, Imogene, who is already busy with work and school, has to fill in for her boss, Alphonso, by performing his mortician duties, because he has suffered a moderate breakdown. His girlfriend, Fredericka, has disappeared without a trace, so of course, Imogene promises to do everything she can to find her. El, Imogene’s boyfriend and normal companion sleuth in their murder mystery adventures, is away at police training, so she enlists her cousin Chelsea to help in the search. Additionally, Imogene is conflicted with a different sort of psychic contact with her present deceased client. He had been a heavy drinker, so of course Imogene displayed his drunken condition at inopportune moments, even without drinking. The man had been a treasure hunter, who had tried for years to find the rumored buried treasure of a legendary local pirate, so he led the ladies on a tour of his digs around Catalina Island. The dangerous search included dodging possible threats from other treasure hunters and avoiding the cause of Fredericka’s disappearance. This is another well-written story with ordinary people performing outside their comfort zones because they care for each other. I have enjoyed this series more with each book and it just keeps getting better, watching the characters grow as each adventure builds their confidence and comradery. I hope there are many more episodes in Imogene’s future!

Ahoy, me hearties!

Greta Boris has outdone herself with this suspenseful whodunit adventure in which Imogene is haunted by a descendant of an actual pirate. Much to her dismay and embarrassment, his presence manifests by causing her to be inebriated at the worst possible times. If that weren’t enough to keep our swing dancing mortuary science student busy, her boss’ girlfriend has disappeared and she has promised to look into that mystery as well. She can’t count on too much help from her boyfriend because he will be spending some time away training for his new job. At least her cousin is available to lend a hand, but they are not prepared for the dangers they will encounter. I was immediately drawn into this story and it kept me intrigued all the way to the finish. There is mystery, danger, humor, romance, treasure and a bit of high seas adventure. Avast ye matey, you’ll not want to be missing out on this one.

I was provided with an advance copy of this book, for which I thank the author, but I am sharing my honest and unbiased review on a completely voluntary basis.

Imogene is involved in another mystery. This book has it all a pirates treasure and murder. Imogene is at work and sees her boss who is distracted because is girlfriend is missing is about to embalm the wrong corpse. She runs over to stop him and ends up falling onto the body. This time she doesn't feel the usual sensations from touching him. Then she sees he person is alive. He is taken back to the hospital. Her boss gets so upset he leaves and the mortuary owner wants her to embalm one of the clients. She just can't bring herself to do it. So she ends up going to her boss's house and agreeing to find his missing girlfriend if he will go back to work.

This as with all the other books in the series is a fun book to read. There is a pirate funeral at which and the ghost make Imogene feel drunk. These are only a few things that happen in this book. I think you will enjoy it and want to read more.

A thoroughly enjoyable and amusing murder mystery. Once again our favourite psychic sleuth finds herself the conduit for a spirit seeking justice in a plot that involves pirate's treasure, a missing girlfriend, a secret sect, snakes and spiritual inebriation. The wannabe horror actor Alphonso will make the reader smile with his usual crucifixion of the English language. Look for gems such as maladore, helicoptering, insatiable and halitosis used incorrectly among others too numerous to mention. Not that I can say anything as my command of foreign languages is enough to make native speakers cringe or burst out laughing.

In addition to spirits invading her life Imogen has to cope with her boyfriend going to police college, Alphonso's depressing moods, kidnapping and an attempt on her life. All in all an enjoyable novel that will make time pass faster.

I received an ARC edition but the views are my own.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, there is something strangely compelling about our crime-solving mortician's apprentice. Imogene Lynch is a Lindy-bopping former hairdresser with an unusual link to the dead. She can sense them when she touches their hair, especially if there has been something off about how they died.

Splitting Hairs sees Imogene having to deal with two separate mysteries ~ firstly Alphonso (Imogene's boss at Greener Pastures) asks her to find his girlfriend, who is missing ~ along with her niece. And then she has to deal with a spirit who makes her hiccup and acts as though she's drunk. The clues lead Imogene to Catalina Island where rumours of a buried treasure belonging to a notorious local pirate have led to a free-for-all all to discover it.

My only disappointment is that the gorgeous El didn't play a larger part. I appreciate he's busy now that he's training at the police academy but it felt strange that Imogene didn't have him there to bounce ideas off.

Another mortician story with lots of laughs. Laughs because the lead embalmer doesn't speak English well and constantly misspeaks. I'd read these books just to see what ridiculous thing he says next.
Imogene and El are back, with a paranormal twist that differs from previous books. Imogene's cousin, the vet, is back too and has a larger part in this book.
El continues his pursuit of becoming a cop and is unavailable most of the time because he's at the police academy. He makes more friends in high places who will undoubtedly become valued additions in the future as crime solving continues to be a way of life for El and Imogene.
It was interesting learning what 'setting' ones facial features means to a mortician. And how squeamish Imogene can be about that and embalming a person.

Imogene Lynch has gotten herself into another exciting investigation in the latest Mortician Murder series by Greta Boris. This series keeps getting better with each new book. This is the first one she has to solve without El, the love of her life, but her cousin Chelsea joins in with her faithful dog, George. There is a lot of adventure and mystery that will keep you guessing, plus biting your nails. I really enjoyed all of the language mess-up’s that Alphonse has. They definitely add some humor to the story. Imogene is developing into a pretty good detective with each new story. All of the main characters are likable, and their personalities keep expanding more with each new story in this series.
Splitting Hairs needs to be on your reading list. If you haven’t read any of the Mortician Murder series stories, you are missing some very exciting reading.

Yo Ho Ho and a bottle of formaldehyde
For some unknown reason, we still glorify the bad ole days of piracy with kids’ costumes, amusement park rides, themed snacks, and romance novels. And who hasn’t ever hunted for pirate treasure? Unfortunately for the deceased, his addiction for old gold sent him to Davy Jones’s Locker instead of to the bank and The Bahamas.

While I love where I live, I do sometimes miss parts of coastal So Cal. Cool breezes, salty air, whale-watching, cruise to Catalina Island…I spend as much time on Google Maps as I do in reading this series! 😊 And the bartender at The Rusty Scupper has some yummy-sounding nautical cocktails that I’m looking forward to trying out. Good things I already own an absinthe spoon for ‘The Green Marine’.

I love the cameos from previous books and other series … should we expect another one in the upcoming ‘Fringe Benefits’?

A hidden pirates treasure sounds so romantic until it involves a murder! This is another enjoyable and engaging read in the creative mortician murders series. With each story Imogene learns even more about her unusual psychic gift (and about cadavers) and is still working to come to terms with it - which isn’t easy and is understandable as not all spirits communicate clearly and the same way! I like that Chelsea, Imogene’s cousin, and her dog George being trained as a volunteer search and rescue dog were both featured in this story. And omg!! My favorite character - Alphonso!! I giggled so much as I read his funny way of expressing the English language. A very original and entertaining storyline.

I love the Mortician Murders series. It makes the mortuary business fun. This case is a little different for Imogene. She doesn't touch the victim's hair. She literally falls on him face first. Then he opens his eyes. Also El has gotten into the police academy and he is busy during the week, so Imogene goes it alone (with her cousin's help) on this one. It involves a victim named for a famous pirate, a pirate themed funeral described oh so well by the author, treasure hunters, and missing persons. As usual Imogene gets herself into plenty of trouble but by channeling El (WWED-What Would El Do), she makes it out alive. This plot is unique. These characters are wonderful. I have become good friends with them throughout this series and I can't wait for the next book.

On this latest installment of the series, Imogene needs to fill in for her boss Alphonso because he’s out of his mind and behaving completely out character since his girlfriend Fredericka disappeared.
Topping Imogene reticence to embalming with a hit from a corpse that makes her suddenly and out of the blue drunk, she also promised to find Fredericka in exchange to Alphonso coming back to work, we have some very funny situations in the book.
With every book I am more and more invested in the stories and there I said deadly eagerly waiting to read each book in it. I love the characters, I laugh out loud with Alphonso and his way of talking, the writing is very good and the stories very entertaining.
I love this series and this book was not an exception, can’t wait for the next one.

Another great entry in this series of books. Imogene is on her own most of the time during this adventure. A body is brought to the funeral home but it turns out that he is not dead after all. They take him to a hospital only for him to really die and return to the funeral home the next day. Imogene touches his hair the first time he is brought to the funeral home and then when he really dies, he starts to possess her and she begins to be drunk when he possesses her and hiccups and stumbles. El starts at the Police Academy and isn’t around during the week. Imogene is looking for Fredericka for Alphonso because she has disappeared and enlists her cousin, Chelsea for help. Trouble strikes but they are rescued by Fredericka and her cousin, Isabel. Fredericka and Alphonso get married in the cemetery where he and Imogene work. Looking forward to the next book in this

Who would think that a story set mostly in a mortuary could be so entertaining? Imogene promised her boss, Alphonso, that she would do everything she could to locate his missing girlfriend.  Even though she doesn't have the faintest idea where to start, she feels obligated to try.  Usually her boyfriend El would team up with her to help solve the mystery, but he's busy with other obligations, so Imogene is on her own.

And she has more than one mystery to solve this time. Not only is she looking for Fredericka, Alphonso's girlfriend, but she's trying to solve the mystery of a body that came to the mortuary, but wasn't really dead, but then ends up back at the mortuary again.  It's a real mystery for sure.
You'll enjoy this light-hearted story.  It's a fun read and will keep you engaged as you follow along to solve these mysteries.  Another well-written book by Greta Boris!

Wow!!!!! Once again I am amazed at how well this story was written. The entire series for that matter.
I loved seeing how the characters grew throughout that entire series. I can't say enough how much I loved reading this series.
In this book I loved how the story picked up on what had happened in the previous books but also how there was a new mystery to solve. I also loved how Imogene started to express her feelings and thoughts more throughout the entire story.
I would like to thank the author for giving me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. If you haven't read this series I highly recommend reading it.

Alphonso is inconsolable as his girlfriend has gone missing. He pleads with Im to search for her. Im boyfriend El isn’t around much as he is at the police academy. However, Im’s cousin steps in to help search. Plus a body is brought in but Im’s gift doesn’t work. Before she can do anything he wakes up. Seems somebody made a mistake. The man is taken to the hospital but is returned the next day, definitely dead. Can Im and her cousin solve both cases? A fun mystery with plenty of questions to answer and plenty of suspense.

Imogene is busy with school, work, and her boyfriend El when everything suddenly changes on her. Her boss has a slight breakdown and she is asked to step up and do the embalming and she finds that she can't do it and that's what she is going to school for! Her boyfriend gets accepted into the police academy and isn't around to talk to for everything. Her boss's girlfriend disappears and Im and her cousin Chelsea go looking and find a lot more then they intended. This is a fast reading, fun story.

mogene has two mysteries to solve, one, the death of Hip Bohchard, and finding Frederika, Alphonso's girlfriend. Frederika and her niece Isabel went to Catalina Island for the weekend and didn't return. Alphonso has been worried about her and ask Imogene for help, threatening to quit and leave her to do the embalming. Imogene asks her cousin Chelsea, and her dog Charlie, to go along with her since Charlie was going to rescue school. Hip seems to be visiting Imogene wanting her to find his killer. This a great book, as are the others in the series.

Splitting Hairs: A Ghostly Mortician Murder Mystery (The Mortician Murders Book 6), my fifteenth read from author Greta Boris. Another enjoyable, well-written ghost mystery, perhaps the best in the series to date. “I received a courtesy Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Fringe Benefits : A Ghostly Mortician Murder Mystery (The Mortician Murders Book 7) high on my TBR list. I love this series. The main characters are wonderful and Chelsea is fitting in quite well. With El being admitted into the Police Academy earlier than expected, Imogene is feeling a bit put out, but I think they can weather it. I hope Imogene is wrong about that Cult she helped bring down as they were really bad news. Unfortunately, I think she may be correct.

I think this is my favourite book so far in the Mortician Murder Series.   Imogene has to solve this one without El done he has finally been accepted into the police academy. This time Imogene is on the hunt for who killed the treasure hunter. At the same time Alfonso's girlfriend appears to have gone missing and she has promised him to look for her.  This is the launching point to a wild ride.  Lots of twists and turns make this book very hard to put down.

Imogene gets no sensation from a dead man's hair. Has she lost her gift? Then it appears that the man was mistakenly reported as dead. Alphonso resigns when he is reprimanded. Imogene begs him to come back. Alphonso has a condition. Imogene must find his missing fiancee. A page turner which had me in splits in addition to being suspenseful. Alphonso's dialogue and Imogene's dance with death are the icing on the cake. I recommend the whole series.

A Twisty Conclusion

Do not begin reading The Morrison Murder Mystery here, start with To Die For and pay attention. Wonderful storyline, great plot and good conclusion. the characters are life like, have regular every day foibles, Boris writes delightful dialogue, and wonderful twist. And I love that she doesn't vote up all the loose ends, it give a reader hope for more Imogene and El.

Frederika has gone missing and Alphonso is inconsolable (or is it "inconstructible"? ;) Another brilliant piece of writing from Greta Boris, much much enjoyed as always. I love Alphonso and his malapropisms, they really make me laugh and cheers me up no end. An intriguing mystery thrown in - who can say anything less than 5 stars for this?
