From the award-winning author of The Hunted comes a fast-paced, nailbiting outback thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Pushing fifty and reeling from an ugly divorce, Paul has decided it's time for an adventure. With the Bee Gees on the radio and the open road ahead, he sets out into the middle of nowhere, open to whatever comes. But things take a sinister turn when he impulsively decides to pick up a hitchhiker. Clutching a ragged backpack with his eyes locked on the rear-view mirror, it's clear this twitchy young man is running from something. But what? And when the truth is revealed, how far will he - and Paul - go to survive?

A twisted cat and mouse game set in the desolate expanse of the Australian outback, The Hitchhiker is an edge-of-your-set thriller that blends the contained tension of Saw with the sun beaten savagery of Wolf Creek.

His 2019 play, The Trial of Dorian Gray, sold out its entire season, was extended, then sold out again. Several of his plays have been published by Australian Plays.

In 2019 Gabriel signed a two book deal with Harper Collins, with the first, The Hunted, scheduled for publication in July 2020. The Hunted will be published in the UK by Faber with translation rights having sold to Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, Italy and France. This book started off slow for me and to be honest it wasn’t doing much for me. Then after about a hundred pages or so it started to get quite intriguing and I couldn’t put it down. The closer I got to finishing it the more intense I felt and I was thinking oh my how is this going to end. Well that ending had me yelling out WHAT! NO WAY! YOU CANT END IT LIKE THAT! I then had to reread the ending to make sure I’d read it correctly and yes I had. Whilst this was going on might I mention I was sitting in my car in a parking space with the window down with people walking past and when I looked up I was getting funny looks from those passing by my car. God knows what those people were thinking of the crazy woman (me) in the car yelling to herself 😂😂

Although this one was a bit slow for me at the start it sure made up for it with that ending. I’m just hoping there will be another book to follow sometime in the future. Highly recommended.

The wide open and desolate highways of Australia have already provided the backdrop to a couple of spine tingling thrillers from Gabriel Bergmoser. With The Hitchhiker, the danger and desperation is borne out again and, once again, Maggie (The Hunted and The Inheritance) finds herself involved.

Paul has hit the road after a divorce and is revelling in travelling through the Australian outback, listening to the Bee Gees on repeat. He’s feeling as free and carefree as he ever has and is loving experiencing the simple sights of the empty landscapes and skies simply filled with more stars than he ever imagined. He thought he might get bored but, thanks to the help of a series of self-help books about actualisation and self-improvement he’s actually bursting with expectations for what lies ahead.

Then he picks up the hitchhiker named Jesse, a brooding young man who’s not prone to doing much talking, constantly stares into the rearview mirror and becomes extremely irritated by the song ‘You Win Again’ on repeat. Jesse says he’s headed for Perth but it appears he’s also running from something. The trip through the wide open spaces suddenly becomes a little tense.

Nah, it actually becomes a lot tense. In fact, it takes a dark turn that resembles a hostage situation that’s definitely not going to end well.

As things progress we start to get taken back in time to learn more about each of the main characters. This serves to adequately provide us with a handy point of reference so that we can understand what each of them is capable of and what their motivations are for being out in the middle of nowhere travelling to goodness knows where.

This is a solid story of suspense set in the harsh and unforgiving backdrop of the Australian outback. The growing tension between the travelling “buddies” is made even more stark by the isolation through which they’re moving. The tiny towns and rest-stops through which they stop only adds to the sense of danger that grows between the pair.

The pace ramps up extremely quickly in the second half of the book thanks largely to the appearance of Maggie. Throw in some clever twists in between a few gruesome acts that might make the squeamish squirm a little and you’ve got yourself an engrossing thriller that could head in just about any direction you’re not expecting.

And I just loved the possibilities created by the ending.

This story was first created as an Audible Original and Bergmoser explains that the brief was to provide a ‘Wolf Creek meets Locke’ story. He’s well and truly done and has managed to create one of the creepiest bad guys you’d ever have the misfortune of running into on the open road into the bargain. It has clearly been given a freshen up for the hardcopy version and integrates quite nicely into the ongoing Hunted series expanding the theme of mayhem on the open roads of Australia’s outback.

My thanks to Harper Collins Australia and NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC that has allowed me to read, enjoy and review this book.

I havent been able to get the Bee Gee's song you win again out of my head since reading this book. Loved the mention of Bruce Springsteen as well. This book is told by 3 POV. Paul ( Driver) , Jesse (hitchhiker) and Maggie (fugitive) . This book was full of unlikeable characters. What I enjoyed the most about this book was the authors writing style. I got the exact same feeling I got when I read The Caretaker. The tension is intense and I couldnt stop reading having to know what was going on. Highly recommend.

**Thank you to HarperCollins Australia for sending me a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review; published 31 July 2024**

I loved this high tension quick read. It started its life as an audiobook but has thankfully made it to print. This intense cat-and-mouse type thriller will keep you on the edge of your seats, biting your nails at the same time. It's well-written, has clever twists and is completely engrossing. Readers who have read previous novels from the author will spot a familiar face; I personally didn't know that was coming and was thrilled.
Overall: I devoured this one, absolutely loved it - definitively one of my favourite thriller reads of 2024.

The Hitchhiker by Gabriel Bergmoser is a violent, terrifying and well paced twisted cat and mouse game thriller set in the Aussie outback, I easily devoured it!

Paul is almost fifty, he’s boring, divorced and is on an adventure road trip when things get sinister after picking up hitchhiker Steve, a young man who appears to be on the run.

Maggie is a fugitive and is running from her past, she’s heading west when she stops at an outback pub and attracts the attention of Paul and Steve.

This story is not for the faint hearted! I loved the plot twist and the interesting back stories of the characters as well as the psychological suspense.

The Hitchhiker was originally released as an audiobook, thankfully now it’s been released in a printed edition. I hope I never hear that song from the Bee Gees, ‘You Win Again!

I listened to this on audiobook format.
Was not a fan of this book. It started off well enough, with a nice twist but as the book progressed, it fell into some thriller cliches and was dangerously veering into torture porn. And there was one part that just didn’t make sense but was obviously used for convenience for the author to move the story along.

A suspenseful story of three people who meet in seemingly normal circumstances that ends up being much less than normal. Some of the story is a little far-fetched but nevertheless it made for interesting reading. An Australian author.

When I saw that this was Audible's free September audiobook, I paused my current audiobook and downloaded this one stat!!
I'm so glad I did because it was a beauty! I knew it would be of course, after having read The Hunted by the same author, as well as another short story of his, both terrific!

This fast-paced thriller grabbed me straight away. It was eerie and suspenseful and I had no idea where it was going. Another top notch tale from this fantastic author.

Listening to this book was also a timely reminder to get onto The Inheritance with a few of my reading pals ☺️

The Hitchhiker is an Audible Original psychological thriller set in the Australian Outback, about three disparate people on the run from the disappointments and trauma of the past, by an author who is new to me. It came free with our subscription and, being shorter than standard audiobooks, seemed like a good choice on a recent journey. Well, after about an hour my husband asked if we could listen to something else. Anything else. I obliged him, and decided to come back to it on my own, as I was intrigued as to where the story was going. After a second hour, I had to listen to something else - anything else - the monotonous tone of the narrator was doing my head in… So I’ve ended up listening to it in short chunks, and finally finished it today, with some relief. It’s not a bad story, but much darker than I was expected.

Paul has set off across the desert on a road trip to escape the pain of a broken heart. His marriage has ended, he doesn’t really understand why, so he’s set off alone, with no set destination, on a voyage of discovery. Seeing a hitchhiker, he decides some company would be fun, but the young man is taciturn, nervy, and reluctant to engage. What danger has Paul brought into his new life?

I think I would’ve liked this more if I had read rather than listened to it. The claustrophobia of the car journey through the baking desert heat, the tension between the two men, and the mystery of exactly what each was leaving behind were well done, but all three narrators were frankly painful to listen to. There’s an excellent twist a couple of hours in, and I was interested in the three main characters’ back stories, but then it got more graphically violent and unpleasant, and I was a bit disappointed by the ending. The constant references to a dreadful BeeGees song also got very tiresome. 2.5 rounded up for the suspense.

Not for me. I started it and found it quite boring and weird. It just wasn't the thriller of a book I thought it might be and I seriously could not finish it.

Life is too short to read books you are not enjoying!

A suspense that will have you guessing until the very end.

This one won’t be easy to be easy to describe without giving anything away, but here goes…..

The story starts with the Driver and his new found freedom of the open road and his love of the Bee Gees song ‘You Win Again’, and it’s not long before he picks up the Hitchhiker.

This book really sucked me in, and proved itself to be a fabulous psychological thriller, with so many twists and turns, and events that shocked me.

As the story unfolds there are glimpses of events that take place leading up to the present day, and in doing so the personalities and motivations of the characters are brought front and centre. There were quite a few chilling moments that had the hairs standing on edge.

Gabriel sets the locations perfectly, describing the isolation and vastness in a balance way that didn’t overtake the story but enhanced it. He also nails it with the characters, and the way the story is seen from the point of view of three of these characters. Yes, that’s correct, there are three major players, and you will just have to wait and see who the third is. This one is a pleasant surprise.

A captivating thriller that had me turning the pages and wanting to see for myself where it was all going to end up, experiencing a fabulously entertaining story as I went. I would recommend grabbing a copy and taking a trip with The Hitchhiker.

Wanted to love this and there were so many elements that gave it potential, but I just didn't. I wasn't connected to any of the characters and their stories and just didn't care enough. While the writing was good, something was missing and so this will be doomed to be a forgettable read.

Paul is recently divorced and pushing 50. He has thrown caution to the wind and hopped into his car for an adventure, not knowing what his destination is. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker, Steve. Steve is not very communicative and Paul wonders what he might be running away from. However, things are not what they seem when it comes to either of them.

Suspension of disbelief is a tricky beast. Some outlandish thing in a book might be too much for me to get past. Other times, if I'm having a great time, I will let it slide. The latter applied in this case. I've been burnt this year by far too many slow-as-molasses thrillers with wishy-washy utter dumbasses for protagonists, so to finally get a fast-paced, exciting story was quite the welcome change! The Hitchhiker hits the ground running and barely lets up.

The characterisation wasn't exactly deep. I wondered who, in this day and age, would actually pick up a hitchhiker. It wasn't explained why none of these people had a mobile phone. We got too much detail about Maggie's past that, while perhaps offering some insight into her actions, didn't really need to be there.

However, I was more than happy to go with the flow. This story moved when so many thrillers these days just spin their wheels endlessly until they can throw in the big "twist" that frequently disappoints. No dual timelines. No hand-wringing simpering morons for main characters. Adapted from an Audible original, this is short and to the point. It's more Wolf Creek than your standard domestic noir, so take that how you will. I really enjoyed myself. I'll keep an eye out for other books by this author.

a lot darker than I was expecting. It is also quite graphic in the descriptions. These are a bit hard at times. This all said, it was a good story. It was a very authentic feeling progression between the three main contenders and I liked that it didn't constantly switch. It was a better than expected conclusion and I will be reading more by the author. I liked the Australian feel without being to overt. It was a good pace and a great unfold

A fast-paced, enjoyable listen. I picked the killer pretty early on so I was happy with the introduction of a new character two thirds of the way through to keep it interesting. The bad guy monologue was pretty good too.

Torture pr0n for teenagers. I nearly quit very early on but it somehow became much more entertaining than expected. It does have one of the stupidest/sentimental/Hollywood endings ever though. Still, not bad for a freebie.

In the wake of a messy divorce, Paul decides it’s time for an adventure, so he heads out on the open road with no plan and no destination. On impulse he picks up a young hitchhiker and that’s when things take a terrifying turn.

With plenty of chilling surprises, The Hitchhiker is an outrageously grisly and psychologically disturbing thriller, that’s not for the faint hearted. Beginning as an average road trip, the tension ratchets up to full heart in mouth levels, as the action packed twists kick in.

If you have yet to read one of Gabriel’s novels, then prepare for a wild and wicked ride that you will not want to get off. After finishing, I am full of anticipation for whatever @gobergmoser writes next!

Still trying to decide how I felt about this book. Especially given how much I loved GB’s The Hunted.

The Hitchhiker was relatively tame by comparison, which is either good or bad, depending on what you’re after. Some things I loved were:

- In my opinion, the Driver was a particularly well written character, and enjoyed listening to him. Especially as the story progressed.

- The big twist somewhere in the middle was completely out of nowhere, in the best possible way!

Some things I thought needed work…:

- I thought there could have been more action. I understand slow burn tension building, but for a relatively short book, I thought things would happen at a slightly faster pace?

- As I said, it was fairly tame, especially compared to The Hunted. I was expecting more of the latter’s dark, gritty atmosphere. Many reviews are calling it torture porn, which makes me wonder what I missed? There were a couple of acts of moderate violence, but nothing nearly as graphic as The Hunted?!

- As with most audiobooks, I found it a little difficult, and therefore confusing, to separate the various voices/viewpoints. Which I think may have contributed to minimising the impact of some scenes/events/etc. Not necessarily the authors fault - maybe a second listen would clear things up??

Overall, an entertaining and suspenseful story, and certainly not bad. I want to say 3.5/5 stars, but 4 seems too generous…
