Her first London Season has arrived, but Clare Compton is far from enthusiastic. In fact, she finds the experience positively nauseating, and when her first ball ends in disaster, the consequences threaten to upend her entire Season. She wants nothing more than to retreat to her country home away from Society’s judgmental stares. Instead, respite comes from a most unexpected source. Patrick Milton, Clare’s childhood enemy, offers a cunning he will serve as her escort for the final five weeks of festivities to help repair Clare’s reputation. The plan seems foolproof. But can she repair her reputation without forfeiting her heart?
Patrick has more than Clare’s welfare in mind when he proposes his ruse. He needs to stay close to the ballrooms of the ton, where he can keep an eye on his wayward twin brother—and serving as Clare’s escort offers the perfect pretense, with the added advantage of saving himself from matrimonial matchmakers. But as the weeks fly by in a whirlwind of candlelit ballrooms and dizzying dances, Patrick’s scheme takes on a life of its own, forcing the now friends to navigate feelings they never expected.
Rachel Kelley Stones grew up on a farm in Kentucky, and an infamous summer of no television solidified her love for the written word. Traveling to eras past became a favorite pastime and inspired her to pursue a degree in English from Brigham Young University. Fast-forward a decade (or more), and she finally put pen to paper to write her own romantic, historical tales. She now lives with her family in Idaho.
Similar to my experience with her beloved debut, this writing just clicks for me. Page 1, we’re in a glistening ballroom, click, click, click. And again, so unabashedly, fundamentally Regency but always a thing or two to make it distinctive. Like, for example, a cast taken right out of those Doublemint gum classic commercials (IYKWM then you know how egregiously I’ve just aged myself). But most of all for this particular book, I love the heart-pumping suspense of when a straightforward, externally low-stakes Regency tale asks my favorite follow-up to the universal question of “Will love conquer all?” Which is: “Including our own stupidity?”
Brace yourself for some exquisite second- hand embarassment because bookish Miss Clare Compton is Ballroom Murphy’s Law personified and needs a debutante mortification punch card. It’s brutal out there in the crush, especially if you have social anxiety and, either commit newbie blunder after blunder, or chaos finds you. It’s this bumpy start that gives an opening for childhood rival Patrick Milton to present a mutually beneficial arrangement. I do love a flimsy strategy that gets constantly sidetracked by pesky unacknowledged emotions. Because, you know, hanging out with the former hoyden that should be-is, ahem-of course she is, basically like a little sister to you, of course, what could transformatively happen? And, fun fact on this trope, I myself married my childhood harmless tormentor, so the sweet, sweet sense of justice when the teasing enemy ends up the love-addled pursuer is very near to my heart.
But we’ve got ourselves a particularly, stubbornly oblivious “Never Catch Feels” friend-zoner charmer here. The anticipation of seeing him choke on that “You and Me? Don’t Be Ridiculous!” guffaw kept me giddy the whole way through. Oh, how I loved this Mr. Milton, the elder twin. Effortlessly magnetic and endearingly protective to a fault, he’s not what you’d call a quick study in the art of love and self-awareness, but he makes up for it in well-intentioned attempts and mostly timely apologies. She did give him his Mr. Knightley “Badly done, Emma” moments, but Rachel Kelley Stones rubbed hands and made him pay dearly for the unrequited pining he’s unwittingly caused. And, all that it takes for me to sacrifice sleep and exultantly slow clap over a romance is that the stage is set for our hero to fall on his face and then be prostrate to grovel while he’s down there. I was so happy with it that I even was like “Throwing in a bit of love triangling? Sure, why not? This one needs all the jealousy nudges he can get.” Could not put it down.
Now, continue to brace for those third act reveals and antics because it gets bumpier and one has to hold on to hope that lessons will be learned and the grovel/gesture punishment will fit the unrequiting crime, our recurring theme of begging pardon crescendoing to a full “I’m an idiot” finale. All in all, I submit dues were paid and these two gingers satisfyingly get to have their happily ever after. Though you know decades down the line he’ll be joking like “Remember when you did this (insert embarassing moment) at that ball?” and Clare will then rub in his face “Remember how you had to bumble and get out of your own way to win me until I took pity on you?” and then the balance will be reestablished to marriage bliss. Now that’s HEA.
So grateful to the author for an ARC. This releases May 7th!
Content notes: Brief Kissing Only. Brief mention of toxic parents. *MIGHT SPOIL* On page non-graphic gun violence.
“Patrick Milton was a flirt. That did not mean he had any idea of making me his wife. All he did was fuel my mother’s overactive imagination.”
The Regency era is such a fairytale in my mind, but Clare brings it to a crashing reality with her social anxiety and blunder after mishap during her first season. It was fun to watch her childhood rival-turned-friend-turned-love-interest swoop in to rescue her time and time again.
The dual points-of-view between Clare and Patrick are absolutely necessary to make this story a smashing success. I love that they are both twins and it is fun that they are both red-headed (was I picturing the Weasley twins? Why, yes–yes, I was).
The journey to love is full of bumps and bruises through misunderstood eavesdropping, twin tricks, assumptions, flirtations, and more. With a beautiful cover and a lovely story within, this is a winner for any sweet Regency romance lover.
Content: mild romance; brief mention of difficult parents

Can l just say I love the way Rachel Kelley Stones writes? She has the best intros to the story that draw me in every time! This book was no different. I was interested and invested from page one!
I loved the character Clare and how she held out to the end for what she wanted. Though she had an unfortunate beginning to her season she triumphed in the end.
Patrick so charming and sweet with Clare. He helped to ground her and calm her fears. He was not without his faults though, which made him more human and lovable as well.
I love stories that have me guessing how they are going to get their happily ever afters in spite of all the obstacles. This was great with lots of witty banter, humor and heart. I highly recommend!
This book is amazing! I loved it so much! I am a fan of childhood rivals falling in love stories! I loved how both Clare and Patrick had twin brothers, that made it more of a unique story. Clare has bad social anxiety and I just loved how much Patrick looks after her and helps her through it. They go from a bantering rivalry to working together and in love. It was so fun to watch their relationship progress and I love how open they are with one another. I also really enjoyed the siblings of both main characters, and felt they were well developed and not just an afterthought. Another great character is Molly. She is a great friend and I just loved how she is with Patrick, it’s hilarious. Overall, this story is just a pure delight! There is romance, secrets, mystery, and I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Rachel has done it yet again! I’m still in awe at her exceptional writing! She has a way of writing characters with real flaws and life experiences. She makes you feel for them and sympathize with them like they were real friends. And she captured all those feelings with A Casualty of the Heart.
From the first chapter, I felt for Clare. She wasn’t comfortable in large crowds, and they tended to upset her to the point of sickness. After a disaster at her first ball, her reputation is in shambles. This broke my heart for her, but she still held her head high.
Patrick, her slightly older childhood nemesis, comes up with a scheme to help her reputation, while also keeping an eye on his twin, Miles, who he was worried about. He decides to accompany her on five outings as a family friend, claiming there is no danger of romance due to their age difference and his claim to bachelorhood. But what happens when his plan backfires and his feelings for Clare start to change into more than friends?
I adored Patrick and Clare! They were a match for each other from the beginning! Their battle of wits, flirty banter and sweet, tender moments had me rooting for their HEA. Poor Patrick, bless his heart…he was an utter dolt. I don’t think I’ve ever read a MMC who was so utterly lost and clueless when it comes to love. He makes several mistakes and when he finally realizes his true feelings, he fears it’s too late. But he doesn’t give up and seeing him try to win Clare back was precious.
I didn’t want this book to end! I savored every word and page, taking it all in. Such a beautiful love story that I can’t wait to go back and re-read!
Things I Loved: ❤️A battle of wits ❤️Frenemies ❤️Childhood teasing ❤️Scheming ❤️The winks ❤️All the twins ❤️The female orphan home ❤️She falls first ❤️Mystery and danger ❤️Molly! ❤️“When pigs fly” ❤️The cow catastrophe
Thank you to the author for the complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions were my own.
Claire Compton doesn't like being among crowds her stomach turns, and she is easily embarrassed her twin brother Calvin is usually close by in her distress. Claire is surprised by the appearance of another set of twins Patrick and Miles Milton were known for their teasing antics when they were younger, and Claire wants nothing to do with either one of them now that they are older. It seems as though fate has a different plan when Claire sees Patrick at every turn and tries to discourage any interest he might have. Patrick, however, has other ideas, and he wants Claire to be a part of them. This book was a delightful read. I loved it.
I really need to do better at reviewing directly after reading. My problem is that I usually finish at night as I am about to go to sleep. I don't feel like I can give a worthy review at that time. But now that I've waited a week to write a review, I am finding myself not remembering much about the book.
I do know that I purchased the audio with a credit because I enjoy the narrator, Noah Wall, very much and I liked the previous book by this author as well.
In reviewing the synopsis, I do remember that I liked the characters and the banter that they had with each other. Clare has social anxiety and that twist was refreshing to see discussed in light of the Regency Era.
Oh now I'm remembering some more of the plot. I did enjoy it. Redheads and twins! Two of my favorites.
Loved this one! It had the perfect balance of serious and humor. It was so fun and heartfelt at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed not only the writing but the story as well. These characters were just so good!! Another great book by Stone! I’m looking forward to whatever she comes up with next!
“He tilted his head to the side, and my traitorous heart beat faster. He looked like. Rogue, one whom I read about in novels. A handsome, devilish rogue.”
In an effort to help his childhood friend adjust to London Society, Patrick assists Clare. Clare starts to fall for Patrick but he only sees her as a friend.
I loved this book!! The cover, the characters, the writing, just everything about it. I read it in a day and a half! I had to see how these two perfectly imperfect people would finally figure out they belonged together. And when I found out there was a suspense subplot I was definitely hooked.
To say Clare Compton is not looking forward to the Season would be a major understatement. Navigating crowds of new faces and having to make small talk makes her nauseous and her twin brother, Calvin, isn't always there to help her feel anchored. Having inherited their father's red curls prevents Clare from blending it, which adds to her social anxiety. She'd much rather be at her family's country home than a London ballroom.
Enter Patrick Milton. Patrick is also a red-headed twin and doesn't approve of his brother's recent antics, so he proposes to escort Clare to the Season's events. He can help her and keep an eye on his brother at the same time--a two birds, one stone thing. Only Patrick didn't plan on developing feelings for Miss Compton.
I felt so bad for Clare and can only imagine how hard it must have been for those with anxiety or extreme shyness to deal with all the social requirements of a London Season. It's enough to give me anxiety. Patrick was so sweet and kind with Clare and I loved how she wasn't anxious around him. Can I say how much I loved their banter? That's one of the things I love about enemies or frenemies to more stories.
I loved the dual POV because we needed to know what each character was thinking and when their feelings started to change toward the other. Both main characters being twins added some extra fun to the story when some swapping occurs. Patrick really is a great guy--flaws and all. We can see that he truly cares for Clare and his brother even if it leads to some missteps along the way.
I definitely recommend this delightful, romantic, Regency romance and I can’t wait for more books from this author. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
Kind and empathetic Clare Compton is far from enthusiastic with her first London Season now here. In fact, Clare finds the experience positively nauseating, and when her first ball ends in disaster, the consequences threaten to demolish her entire Season. Clare desperately wants nothing more than to retreat to her country home away from Society’s harsh judgmental stares. Instead, great relief comes from a most unexpected source. Noble Patrick Milton, Clare’s childhood enemy, offers a cunning solution: he will serve as her escort for the final five weeks of festivities to help repair Clare’s reputation. The plan seems foolproof. But can she repair her reputation without forfeiting her heart?
Loyal and devoted Patrick has more than Clare’s welfare in mind when he proposes his ruse. He needs to stay close to the ballrooms of the ton, where he can keep an eye on his wayward twin brother—and serving as Clare’s escort offers the perfect pretense, with the added advantage of saving himself from matrimonial matchmakers. But as the weeks soar by, Patrick’s scheme takes on a life of its own, forcing the now friends to navigate feelings they never expected, especially when it comes to matters of the heart. There’s so much to risk and give…
@rachelkelleystones_author oh what a delightful, original, and captivating story you have so wonderfully weaved with lovely endearing characters, imagery, and delightful humor! I am such a fan of this story! Readers, this dear book is a treasure and is worth the read, anytime!
“Without a shadow of a doubt. You have invaded my heart, and I have no intention of extracting you from it.”
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I really enjoyed this book! I was lucky enough to receive an ARC from the publisher. It was a fun read and had a lot of fun aspects to it. Two sets of twins, redheads, childhood friends turned nemeses, turned lovers(?). While this was not so fun, a big aspect of the book included the FMC having social anxiety (mostly in big crowds). I loved that the author added that as a part of her character. It made Clare more realistic and relatable. Especially for myself! I felt her struggles on so many levels!
Patrick was a fun character as well! Without spoiling anything, he did make some dumb mistakes throughout the book, and kinda drove me crazy because he was so blind to his feelings, but I grew to love him too. He was so sweet to Clare and knew just how to calm her down whenever she had her panic attacks. I loved that about him.
There was even a bit of mystery and a suspenseful moment toward the end of the book. I could definitely see this becoming a series with both Miles and Calvin. (The other twins!) It would be fun to hear their stories as well.
It was a great book all-around. I’m looking forward to sharing this with my friends and recommending it to others! Thanks again to Covenant and Rachel Kelley Stones for giving me an ebook copy for early reading/enjoying/reviewing. ❤️
I truly am coming to love Rachel Kelley Stones writing. This story has equal hearts to real struggling characters that just make you feel connected. I mean who hasn't experienced a bout of the social anxiety of being accepted at least once in life. I feel for you Miss Clare Compton.
Then enter childhood rival, need I say more, Patrick Milton. Who just happens to propose a beneficial solution for them both? Hint...hint we all know how that's really going to go. Rivals to friends to love, yes please.
You shouldn't miss out on this wonderful regency tale that is brimming with heart. I enjoyed reading the author's notes and how her being a twin helped bring this story to life. And you can truly feel that in the writing.
Go pick up this delightful read today! You will not be disappointed!!!😁
More like 2.5 stars. Took a while to get into it, but then it got interesting, and then the ending dragged on and on. By the time it ended I felt like I had lost interest again and was tired of the main character.
I enjoyed this fun story. The characters are well developed and unique. Clare has social anxiety which results in some truly embarrassing scenes. Patrick is a good guy, if a little oblivious. The side story of Miles and Lady Snelling added intrigue and mystery.
Rachel Kelley Stones is such an amazing author! She has such talent and I absolutely love how she can take something that seems like a disability or a disadvantage and write about it in a way that truly inspires!
Whether it’s nerves or social anxiety, Clare does not do well in big social settings. When her first ball ends in a way that could possibly ruin her reputation her childhood friend Patrick has a solution! Unfortunately things aren’t quite so simple and straightforward when feelings and unseen complications arise!
With its charming connections, swoon worthy moments, and strong sibling bonds, this is a book I quickly fell in love with, and one I would definitely recommend!
Romance, sweet, period Clare and Patrick’s story was a lovely fall. From childhood friends, to more. Clare realized first, as they were going about town to try to foil Patrick’s brother’s romance, she realized her feelings had grown deeper. Patrick took longer to realize that what he was feeling wasn’t just friendship but more. The twin scenario was a fun part of this story. Told from alternating points of view, it was nice to see both perspectives. I missed Clare’s perspective at the end, but a perfect escape read.
Genre: Historical Romance - Regency Romance Level: Brief kisses only Release Date: Available now
My Favorite Parts: The carriage ride Patrick Milton The bargain Childhood Rivals to more Dances The soft, tender touches The musicale The flowers Fishing Storm Bit of mystery Unrequited love The animal scene
Parts I hated: Mrs Tolbert and her goonies 😭😡🤬 I wanted to punch them for Clare
Oh swoon! Be still my heart! This story is just exquisite. I am having trouble just typing out this review, because words cannot do it justice. But here goes... Clare and Patrick were childhood friends, with Patrick as an extreme tease. I loved the fact that they were friends and their feelings were more gradual than most friends to lovers books. Patrick is this man who feels Clare is too young for him and sees her only as a friend, until one day he realizes he does want more. I wanted to smack him over the head every time he said they were friends. UGH! But he was just so kind to her and tender, and oh just undeserving of her. Clare struggles with social anxiety, and Patrick and her brother help her survive those situations. He definitely makes up for it in the end and oh that ending, soooo good. Also, really hilarious! I definitely laughed out loud at the animal scene.
Calvin was probably my favorite character. He was such a good brother to Clare. So devoted and loyal and kind. I really really hope we get his story eventually.
The story overall was just amazing! I absolutely loved it! From the longing, pining, and unrequited love to the bit of action and mystery. That bit of mystery involving his brother added just the right amount of intrigue and suspense as the cherry on top of the amazing blend of tropes and scenes that is this book.
This book is definitely going on my favorites shelf and will be a reread for me for sure. I am looking forward to reading Love Unseen, because I am hooked on Rachel's style of writing! Beautiful prose with swoony moments, memorable characters, and just the right amount of mystery and action for this genre of book.
Witty, romantic, childhood enemies to lovers, and a bit of suspense too! Rachel Kelley Stones is quickly becoming a favorite, automatic read author. I love the way she crafts her characters, each with a unique edge. There’s nothing better than childhood rivals to lovers and I thoroughly enjoyed the way Clare & Patrick match wits in this clever Regency romance.
Clare Compton is not looking forward to her Season. Suffering from acute social anxiety, her disastrous, embarrassing forays into Society threaten to ruin her reputation. To the rescue comes her childhood friend/enemy Patrick Milton who offers her a bargain she can’t refuse. He’ll help repair her reputation while she gives him the necessary cover to spy on his twin brother who’s fallen in with the wrong woman. The more time she and Patrick spend together though, the more she’s in danger of losing her heart. But, does Patrick feel the same way?
I adored Clare & Patrick! Their banter was absolutely delicious. Though Clare is tongue tied and shy in public, she’s certainly not with Patrick. Their delightful reminiscing about their childhood escapades had me smiling and I loved watching their relationship change from reluctant admiration to love.
Patrick’s a handsome tease who despite his verbal sparing with Clare truly cares for her. He also loves his brother and is desperate to help him. Because they’re identical twins, you know there’s going to be mischief involved in swapping places and I loved every minute despite the havoc it causes.
I also loved the well developed side characters and thoroughly enjoyed this Regency world the author’s created. I’m hoping she’ll continue the story with Clare’s brother Calvin & Patrick’s brother Miles. The ending is filled with a bit of suspense, humor, and a grand gesture that’s definitely unique!
Highly recommend this delightful, romantic, must read Regency romance! I can’t wait for more books from this author. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
I’m giving all the stars to this fantastic Regency romance by Rachelle Kelley stones. With a vivacious and romantically incompetent MMC and a reserved yet still feisty FMC, this book truly swept me away from page one! It was a serious page turner that somehow gave off friends to more and enemies to lovers vibes at the same time.
The main character, Clare, deals with what she considers a bad case of nerves, but with what we would probably call social anxiety and/or claustrophobia. The “meet cute” (which technically wasn’t a meet cute since Clare and Patrick knew each other before, but still) is hilaaaarious. Seeing how Clare navigates this part of herself against the background of the cruel London ‘ton was interesting. I also loved seeing the layers of who she was get peeled back as she navigated different social circles and interacted with different people.
And then there’s Patrick. What I loved most about his character was how well-rounded he was. He had many redeeming qualities that made me fall in love with him, yet his flaws were also made obvious throughout the book in a way that made me love him more. There’s something powerful about looking into a character’s soul and seeing yourself reflected back at you, and something even more powerful about seeing a character’s development over time as an invitation to you to change.
A few more things I loved, bullet point style: ❤️ Two sets of twins! ❤️ Hint of suspense/intrigue ❤️ Anxiety rep ❤️ Clueless MMC ❤️ Laugh-out-loud moment at the end (iykyk) ❤️ Introverted book-loving Clare ❤️ The archery lesson
I loved the characters in this book, and I would love to see this become a stand-alone series where we get Calvin or Miles’ stories! I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book but all these thoughts are mine😊
Oh, this book was SO much fun! I was hooked from the very first page!
After a disastrous scene at her first ball, Clare's first London season is all but over until Patrick comes to her rescue. She doesn't completely understand why he is willing to be her escort and lend her his credibility for the rest of the season, but she decides there aren't many things worse than making a bargain with your childhood enemy...until she ends up falling for him.
Patrick is desperately worried about his twin brother and needs an excuse to be at the same events so he can keep an eye on him. Enter Clare. It's the perfect plan- Clare can find her footing among the ton, and Patrick can keep his brother from making a monumental mistake. Perfect until Patrick manages to mess up his friendship with Clare and realizes too late that he wants much more than friendship from her.
What you'll love: Regency era Dual POV Childhood frenemies The bargain Hidden/mixed identity Social anxiety rep Grand gestures gone wrong Touch of suspense Archery lessons Protective hero Farm animals The sweet romance!
I love the way this author writes her characters. They aren't cookie cutter characters - they are complex and real and make mistakes, and it makes them memorable and relatable. I loved the social anxiety rep with Clare - so well done - and oh, charming Patrick. He was a bit clueless at times but luckily the man figured it out before it was too late!
There were definitely some twists to the story and some I absolutely did NOT see coming. The touch of suspense made for such a great conclusion and that epilogue just about did me in with laughing and swooning.
An absolutely enjoyable sweet Regency romance from an auto-read author who is quickly becoming a favorite!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
This book has one of the most memorable meet cutes EVER. I mean, Clare and Patrick knew each other as children so it isn’t the first time they met, but it is still epic. If you pick this book up for no other reason than this scene, it is WORTH IT! (Well that and the other scene at the end...)
Clare suffers from social anxiety. I loved seeing her recognize that she could do more when she had support from others. She didn’t want to be limited, but figured out how to work within the boundaries she had.
Patrick is something else. He struggles with his twin brother who seems to be drawing away from him. He figures out a way to help Clare bolster her reputation, but does so while trying to figure out what his brother is up to. He is singularly focused. So focused that he doesn’t realize he’s falling in love and simultaneously pushing his love away. Of course, he decides on a grand gesture which results in ANOTHER epic and very memorable scene.
I liked the bit of mystery and intrigue in the book. I loved the references to the heart as well. I did like the hijinks that ensue when one twin impersonates another. And to see the different relationships between twins. I loved the little gestures that Patrick did that meant he cared (even if he didn’t know it himself). And of course, loved the slow burn.
I will admit to panicking a bit when nearing the end of the book and we still didn’t have a solid HEA in sight… For that reason, I would have loved an epilogue so we could see more of them together as a couple.
Thanks to the author and publisher for a review copy. All thoughts are my own.
I have twins- not identical- but twin shenanigans are a legit thing. I’ve got stories. Drawing on each others face with sharpies? Yep. Leaning down so her brother could cut off the top of her hair? Totally. I’ll stop there so you don’t question my lack of parenting skills any further.
Meet the Milton twins. Two hotties. And more than a bit of trouble. Clare is not a fan because Patrick has been annoying her since forever.
But Clare’s social anxiety has got her in a hot spot. I cringed for her while low key laughing at the entire scene. Patrick has an idea to help them both. Can you guess how this is going to go? And yes, Patrick is just adorable. And clueless. But so dang lovable. And his grand gesture folks. I. Was. Dying. Of laughter. Remember clueless?
I so enjoyed this couple and how they each grew together. It’s funny. Charming. Kind of twisty with a bit of suspense. And this author had me really stop and think about what anxiety looked like during that time period. And also grateful I didn’t have identical twins.
Clare may be seeing double, but is it a chance to also find love? And when things get dicey who will get the shove?
@rachelkelleystones_author writes about flawed characters who worm their way into my heart and stay. Her first novel Love Unseen should not be missed
If you are looking for a fresh new Regency romance, check out this book. After enjoying Stones debut and the way she crafted such original characters with so realistic realities, I was happy to find that the characters in A Casualty of the Heart were just as original and relatable. Clare's anxiety will resonate with many readers and I loved so much how Patrick saw her and navigated her anxiousness with her. It was super sweet and Patrick so charming even if he was oblivious at times. Something really fun about this book to me was that both MCs were twins. I liked the way that dynamic played out not only in the individual character's personal growth and relationship with their twin, but how it wove into the romance element too. It made me want to have a twin sibling. I loved the dual POV, the bit of childhood friends and enemies to lovers’ vibes. This book was a cute read and I recommend it. This is a clean Regency romance. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Did you have a childhood enemy? Clare Compton has one (Patrick Milton) and he is just as to her annoying now as he was all those years ago. When Clare has a terribly embarrassing thing happen to her that ruins a ball, Patrick is there to help her rebuild her reputation among Society. I wasn’t sure of his willingness to come to her aid, but that is one of the intriguing parts of the story.
I thought Patrick was a bit clueless when it came to Clare and her feelings. At times he seemed to be one to be able to get his way, regardless of Clare’s plans. For this reason, he wasn’t my favorite, until the end! His grand gesture was hilarious and very original.
Things to enjoy: Twins Redheads Molly- childhood friend archery competition secret mission farmyard animals Regency era Clean and wholesome romance
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of the book that was provided to me. All opinions are my own.
One of my most favorite proper romances last year was Love Unseen. After I realized it was a debut novel and the author didn’t have a backlist I could voraciously devour I was so sad. So I stalked Rachel’s IG watching for her next book. I was giddy when she announced publication of this beauty.
When the opening intro to both characters starts with one puking on the other you know it’s going to be an enjoyable book.
This book is the picture perfect reason Dual POV is the superior perspective to use. We most definitely needed both thoughts from Patrick and Clare making this exemplary.
I loved the childhood rivals turned lovers only after many bumps and twists. It was a perfect journey.
Well done Rachel. Please keep writing. Please keep telling stories that make us smile, laugh, and leave us wanting more.
I received a complimentary copy from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
The author does a fantastic job of pulling you right into the story. I felt as if I’d known Clare and Patrick for years. And I loved the mentions of backstory told throughout. Even with the first chapter I could already tell I was going to enjoy this childhood friends to lovers storyline. It was a lovely slow burn with some surprising twists and some very funny moments.
I loved Patrick’s sneaky way with Clare’s parents to get her places. His scheme was very clever to get Clare out in society to help her situation. Patrick had his own motivations and I enjoyed the path the story took from that. I appreciated the storyline of the MFC having social anxiety.
There were many wonderfully charming (and often funny) moments in the story and one character particularly was a lovely addition to the book. And of course the dual POV was my favorite.
I received an eARC from the author. All views and opinions expressed are my own.
I loved this book! The writing style of this book is so fantastically engrossing! The wit, schemes, and actions motivated by love kept me reading long past the time I should’ve gone to bed.
Socially anxious Clare Compton does not love London, but is trying to make the best of her first season.
Charismatic and socially adored Patrick Milton is trying to untangle the frustratingly uncommunicative knot that is his twin.
When Clare’s first social soirée ends in disaster and Patrick proposes a clever plan to make things right, can she go through with it without losing her heart?

A fun novel indeed! I love the childhood friends/enemies background and the reconnection right at the beginning of this story.
Patrick and Clare really challenged each other and made each other grow. And Patrick certainly learned a thing or two along the way! I loved seeing the moment everything finally clicked for him. And you can’t help but love Clare and feel for her circumstances and emotional turmoil. It was a roller coaster of a ride for her but the ending was sweet. I so enjoyed their journey and where they ended up together!
This was a really enjoyable, quick read that you won’t want to miss! I’m loving this author and can’t wait for her next book!

“When pigs fly, Patrick Milton”
I loved 'A Casualty of the Heart' - it was a delightful romance with just the right balance of humor and heartfelt moments. The journey of Clare and Patrick was entertaining, complex, and authentic. I appreciated Clare's growth in the face of social anxiety, and Patrick's obliviousness to her feelings made for a tension-filled dynamic that kept me hooked. The mystery and intrigue surrounding the twins' relationship added another layer of complexity that made the story even more engaging. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a feel-good read with plenty of twists and turns.
