I bought this collection in Crow Bookshop in Burlington. I look for local poets on my travels, and I’m thrilled I chose this book. Exactly what I love: nature, emotion, a focus on details and feelings and meaning in our environment. I particularly love the parent poems and “The Sky Breaks ….”
This is a book to return to again and again. The crisp images, heartbeat cadences, and thoughtful examination of life’s moments all bring me back to earlier days and make me think of the time we have left. Such as in the opening poem, “Sleepwalker,” where she writes, “Silver sharp blade up against the inky night,/the crescent moon’s razor shaves a narrow swath”. Or in “Animal Stories: “How many heartbeats has it been/since we were last shepherded in/the same shared space together?” This book is a gem.
Exquisite and crisp poems about all the angles of humanity. Love. Death. Grief. Gratitude. Parenting. Nature. Art. Highly recommend! (Full disclosure: I am the publisher.)
If you follow my reviews, you are aware that I consider poetry an art, therefore an instant 5 stars. Art is subjective and I'm not one to critique it. I do enjoy reading poetry. It works as a palate cleanser when I've read too many horrors and/or thrillers or have stuck to reading the same genre far too long. This go about, I've been reading too many psych thrillers so this little books was my next go-to read. Also, when I read poetry, it sometimes helps me decompress my emotions, especially when life is beating me down. I think I've learned that I prefer dark poetry, but anyway. I received a paperback copy of StoneChat earlier than the official release date of Apr 9, 2024. I can't say that I connected with these poems emotionally, but that's probably on me. Currently my frame of mind is NOT the greatest, and its by no fault of this book... The paperback was lightweight and easy to hold, great for in the pool.
