A djinn with a wish unfulfilled. A human looking for love. And the meddlesome Mistvalers.
Kezan
Being a djinn without a master sucked.
After years of waiting, Fate had finally granted my wish for a mate. But what should I do when my mate tells me he's straight?
Ezra
Walking into Wish For It changed everything for me.
One minute I was looking for an outfit to impress the woman I liked, and the next moment I was thrust into a world of magic I never knew existed.
Make a Wish is a fluffy, Valentine's novella featuring a djinn who helps people find their 'perfect outfits,' a human who'd been clueless about more than just the supernatural world, and some covert meddling from the Mistvalers.
Note: Set in Stella Rainbow's fictional town of Mistvale, Make a Wish is a spin-off novella that chronologically falls after The Reclusive Dryad, but it can be read as a standalone. You can find a chronological reading order of the Mistvale books on the author's website!
Stella Rainbow is the pen name of a twenty something woman from India. Her heart is too full of rainbow colored stories to be limited by the lack of awareness in her home country.
Stella spends her days cuddling up with her cat, typing out new stories, daydreaming and reading all the books she can get her hands on.
She loves talking to her readers and other book lovers, so don't hesitate in contacting her on any of her socials or emailing her at authorstellarainbow@gmail.com
I would have classed this as a pleasant, forgettable read except for two major things.
1. This is magical gay for you.
Ezra is totally straight, until he gets hooked by the mate bond (which he doesn’t even know is a thing). He’s just all in on the attraction to the djinn, no real questions asked.
This bothers me a lot, I think the lack of effort put into processing it. He’s just…oh okay I am all in for this dude suddenly. I like GFY if its done well, but this was …no. Especially since the human guy spent a while repeating how he wasn’t attracted to any other men ever and still wasn’t. What was the point. To show how special the mate bond is? No reason a bi awakening would cheapen that.
2. The magically drugged cake.
Honestly a greater issue…the drugged cake. Which didn’t even matter ultimately so its even more ??? to me. They’re going on a picnic, before the human knows about the supernatural. The djinn goes to a witch’s bakery, and buys cake that has been magically altered to enhance positive feelings. He does not inform the human of this, even when the human is told about the supernatural. It ultimately is not discussed at all, but this falls under drugging someone to me. Can’t he have just bought normal excellent cake??
So, with these two things, it was exceptionally gross to me.
Plus, it was just sort of plotless? Nothing happened, no tension, not even for the alleged straightness (so what purpose did that serve? It wasn’t even a barrier for more than five minutes so the magical GFY is also pointless while being gross. Mostly we just met like 600 characters.
Overall, while this could ave been just another bland, pleasantly forgettable read, it managed to pull in two icky (to me) things that were wildly unnecessary. Especially the drug cake. I might have read more by this author, but now I will not.
2.5 stars - This can be read as a standalone, though the many side-characters mentioned may be confusing if one doesn't know them from previous books. I like this book universe, and even though all the author's books I've read so far are all mediocre, they are entertaining and perfect for a simple and easy read without any depth. I wouldn't pay very much for them, but also not shun them when available to me.
I enjoyed this free short story by one of my go to authors, especially if I feel like reading a no angst insta-love story. Kezan is a djinn and owns Wish For It Boutique in Mistvale. He’s really happy that his employee Micah is only 15 years old and has already found his mate in Cam but he’s also upset as he’s been waiting nearly 200 years for his mate and wonders when Fate will grant him a mate. Ezra is a human and has been recommended by his work colleague Jason to check out Wish For It, as they’ll find the perfect outfit he wants for his work Valentines Day Party. Little did he know that going shopping would change his life in unexpected ways. I thought Kenzan and Ezra were great together. I loved getting more of Micah and Cam as they grow so much after each book. I loved their match making efforts. I’m looking forward to reading more books in Mistvale universe as they’re released. I’d definitely recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.
3.5* A cute low-angst story of a low-level Djinn whose mate walks into his clothing store, only the mate is there to buy a suit to impress a lady he wants to ask out. Hmmm. With some intereference from well-meaning friends, Kezan asks Ezra out and to his own surprise Ezra agrees. He's mystified as to why he's so attracted to a guy but once he accepts it he decides to go for it. Of course as a human he has to be exposed to the supernatural which is done in a fun way much to Kezan's dismay.
My only thought was that Ezra takes to m/m sex like a duck to water. On the other hand, I suppose you can blame it on the mate thing. The history of Djinns and how if they have no one to mind their bottle for about 10 years they just pop out of existence was interesting. And of course going inside the bottle was cool. Very I dream of Jeannie but bigger. :-)
I finished the story, but it was disappointing. The characters had no personality, and the conflict was wrapped up at 30% completion. You've got a human male who thought he was straight, spoke a few words to a guy ringing up his purchases at a store, and a few days later he's in love with him. I was really hoping he would be harder to get.
On top of there being very little conflict, these guys had very little agency. Micah and Cam did most of the work to get them together.
There is a little romance happening here. The guys are thoughtful and respectful toward each other, they're just not particularly charming or snarky and they don't share any personal information about themselves or have family or good friends to introduce to each other. Even the dog is boring and mostly sleeps.
Wish For It is a magical romance where fate collides with identity and desire. Kezan, a djinn long without a master, finally finds his destined mate—only to discover Ezra believes he's straight. Meanwhile, Ezra stumbles into a mystical shop seeking a date-worthy outfit and instead finds a world of enchantment... and a connection that defies everything he thought he knew.
I enjoyed this novella where with the mischievous Mistvalers stirring the pot, this story explores longing, self-discovery, and the magic of unexpected love. I loved that this features a different supernatural meeting their mate and getting the HEA that he deserved. I liked that Ezra was suddenly attracted to a man but did feel that more discussion of their feelings and emotions would have been useful. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
Was a cute little, insta-love read. I know this was a short and I didn't know it was part of an already existing world but there is like zero world building in this story. I also didn't understand Cam and Micah being mates while they are underage. Like maybe it doesn't matter in this supernatural world but it should still matter to the author. They were only side characters so nothing happened with them but it was confusing to me because I've never read a story where people have found their mate at a young age. Ezra and Kezan were cute together. I liked that Ezra didn't have a big "but I can't like him because I'm straight" moment.
This left me feeling rather disappointed. I felt like I was reading a children’s story. The writing was simplistic, yet clumsy, and too many things made no sense, or were contradictory. While I appreciate an author’s own twist on a common trope, it’s wasted when you spend more time explaining things than telling the story. The characters were really not very interesting. I got tired of Kezan explaining his lack of, or low level of powers. And Ezra was not a very believable character. He starts as a straight man, unaware of supes, and in a matter of days, he’s an assertive gay top immersed and unphased by the supe world. And the dialogue….just Ugh!
This book is well written and has established characters, however there's no real conflict. It's just kinda boring. Ezra is supposidly straight but instead of Kezan building up a relationship, within the space of what seems half a dinner this is solved. Then there's the fact that he's human, again that's resolved super easy and quick. The most interesting thing is getting Ezra and Kezan to meet a second time and that's sorted by 20% in. A nice read, but not terribly absorbing.
Title: “Make A Wish” by Stella Rainbow Interconnected Series: Yes Standalone: Yes Cliffhanger: No HEA: Triggers: No Third Act Breakup: No Tags/Tropes: ➢ Fated Mates ➢ Gay For You ➢ Human x Djinn
Ezra isn't suspecting anything when he walks into a shoo to buy an outfit for a Valentine Day party. Little does he know but his life is going to change. When Ezra walks into Keazan's shop, Keazan knows that he has met his mate. Now, it's just getting Ezra to know that and to understand about supernaturals.
Perfectly sweet with no angst. You don’t need to have read the other Mistvale books but it would help with world building as there isn’t much in this story. Quick easy read though shorter than expected as it ended only 80% in with the rest being a teaser from one of the other books.
This story is quite short and a cute fated mates, insta-love. It's not as consistent as it could be for something so short. Also, the human character accepts not only that supes are real but also a shift in his own sexuality a little too quickly for my taste.
Supes live among the normals, who are totally unaware of this fact. Kezan is a djinn, Ezra is a normal, and they're fated mates. But will Ezra be worthy of becoming the holder of Kezan's bottle?
This was a fun story that's a quick read and has some interesting world building.
Ezra and Kazan were just adorable! This was a sweet short story set in the Mistvale universe. I have enjoyed reading these wonderful stories and this was a welcome addition to the series. Highly Recommended
Make a Wish was a super sweet story set in Stella Rainbow's magical town of Mistvale. I adored Kezan and Ezra, and seeing side-characters from the Mistvale books in the future was an added bonus.
I have read most of these set of series and I have enjoyed every one of them. This book was no different. It was sweet and sparked my imagination. Recommend reading.
Cute short story about a jinn who finds his fated mate. My favorite parts are his magical boutique (set up by his former keeper who sounds wonderful,) and the way he lives in his bottle.
