Wolf's Gambit

Rate this book
My whole life, I’ve been the outsider. The wolves of the Anterrio Pack took my brother and me into their pack after our parents died.

To the pack, I remained the wild, untamed misfit despite my efforts to belong.

My first heat loomed ahead of the Luna Ball, and once again, I found myself attracting unwelcome attention, not just from my pack but also from the visiting Blackridge Peak Pack.

When my brother suspected their new alpha might hold answers about our past, he refused to put me at risk while he searched for the truth. Instead, he set me free from a pack that never truly accepted me.

Running from the only home I’d ever known, I longed for a fresh start. But in an unfamiliar human world, finding my place proved to be another challenge, as trouble followed me relentlessly.

Until I realized it was not just misfortune that was dogging my heels.

It’s an alpha.

4 super entertaining ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A feral young fmc with a sense of humor and a bad attitude. This was so fun and amusing.

I did not think I was going to like this as much as I did. I saw the author mentioned this morning, and I got curious. And wow am I happy I did.

Kezia( I think, I did the Audio) and her brother were taken in, by a pack, as children. Their parents were killed, and Zelia went feral from grief and spent 6 years in her wolf form.
Her brother needed help with her😂 and sought out a pack to help. The pack however is always weary of her.
When she is 18 years old, she meets Cannon, the alpha from another pack. He arrives at their camp and she goes into heat for the first time. It does not go well. 😁 and disruption happens to the whole camp. Chris, her brother sends her away to protect her in the long run. However she is left to fend for herself in the human world always hiding her true nature and without a pack. She manages to survive as a fighter until things unravel. No spoilers so I am keeping it vague. That is all you should know.

Honestly this was such a good time, she had so much attitude but in a fun way, because she knows it, and her inner dialogue is packed with self irony and self awareness.
It’s a slow burn romance and ends on a cliffhanger.
The writer’s humorous undertone to develop the fmc is 🫶
It has all the Romantasy “tropes”but not in the word for word “ who did this to you” way, but phrased in more subtle ways, which I applaud!

Spice level lowish the first 80% and then picks up, however the fun level is constantly high.
Does it lean Ya, a little, but if you like adventures and can enjoy something completely unserious, you will probably like this. I will definitely continue this series.

Should you read it? Yes it’s an excellent palate cleanser and a great time.

Odd choices for this one

It's not that the storyline was bad. For the most part, this moved pretty well.
At first, this was reading as YA given the main character is a teen and behaved like one a lot. I almost dropped it because of that.
This shouldn't have been about a teen. This should've been about an adult. It would've worked better.
I'm going to have a hard time accepting the bullshit from our dark main male character just because of her age, let alone the fact that he shot her, kept her in a cell, and practically forces himself on her. Add on her age, and these issues are too much to overcome.

A little bit of research might have helped here. One, a puddle does not ruin a plastic ID. Two, an exit wound from a bullet is always bigger than the entrance wound, not the other way around.

The focus on female equality in a werewolf world always throws me. This one has a better reason for Kezia outshining some males, but even so, the rest of the book doesn't show this being a typical thing, regardless of some packs letting their women fight. Their structure calls for the strongest being on top. And while a female werewolf might wipe the floor with a human male, it wouldn't be like that with all of the males of their species. So the feminist angle just doesn't belong here, especially because they always end up with a domineering Alpha.

Otherwise, it's an easy read. I've been having terrible luck with books, and I could stand this, so I'll read the next one and see if it improves, even though the plot devices are repetitive.

cannon is evil and not good for her

I absolutely love the heroine, but I don’t like anyone else in this book except her human friends and maybe the shaman.

Cannon enslaved his own mate and is evil… I don’t care what excuse he gives what he did to her in the cage he put her in was pure evil

I will continue this story to see what happens though

Wolf’s Gambit by Eve L. Mitchell is the first book in The Blackridge Peak Series which is a paranormal shifter romance.

Kezia’s life isn’t easy, not from childhood and not now. But through every challenge life has thrown at her, she’s overcome it the best she can. The growth, independence and personal development of Kezia’s character is fantastic to read.

The emotional hits, as well as the physical ones, just kept coming and this built the character connection with Kezia.

And Cannon, well he’s a whole other wolf. However, his presence immediately stands out. He’s dominating, in control and truly an alpha.

His initial power and control shown towards Kezia in her first heat, was just wow and that scene was my favourite from the whole story. This moment was what I felt created the lead up to every situation following it.

I loved that this story was primarily told from Kezia’s POV and the added Cannon chapters really tied this story together. I’m definitely hoping for a little more from Cannon in the next books, but with Kezia still being the main character throughout, as there’s something about her character that hooks you.

Every time I turned the page I had no idea what was coming next, and to me that shows that this story was captivating and intriguing and has me wanting book 2 ASAP! Especially with that cliffhanger - but who doesn’t love a good cliffhanger!

Side note: I loved that this story transitioned from a few bonus newsletter chapters that Eve L. Mitchell shared with her readers, to being a complete series of books. There was something that hooked me when I first read the chapters and to now having more of that world is an even better “bonus” story!

wow, I genuinely think I’ve never disliked so many characters in one book. Not only were they badly written, but they were just straight up bad. I have more empathy for tamlin than I do for cannon, first of all bro is actually a fucking weirdo who is also a hypocrite and contradicts himself every other sentence. He sucks. He held her prisoner for weeks, shot her, but also tries to act like he’s a good guy bc he won’t force her to answer his questions. Holy shit I actually hate this guy. It’s currently 1am and I am rage reviewing this book because it was a quick read and the whole time I was holding on to hope that it would get better. Hoping that the plot would go somewhere (spoiler alert, it doesn’t!) I picked up this book because I needed something quick that I knew I would devour, but in return I ate too fast and it poisoned me and now I’m going to die a slow painful death.

I fear I may have to read the second book because I just need to know what happens and see if there is some way that the author can redeem this character (DOUBTFUL VERY DOUBTFUL). But maybe I’ll give it a try 👹.

If I had a gun I would shoot the MMC. That’s all thanks for listening.

UPDATE!!

I slept on this book and my thoughts have not changed slightly. Not only did this man, shoot her, starve her, kidnap her, throw her in a cell for over a month, and manipulate her, he also make her out to be some sort of villain for protecting herself against men who were going to rape her and kill her. He is constantly trying to guilt her for “killing humans” like bro are we so serious rn.

I have made the hard decision to read the second book. I doubt this character is salvageable but alas my curiosity is getting the better of me. so here we go.

4.5 page turning stars.

This is my first read from this author and I really enjoyed this one. Its a great start to this series and i am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Kezia's life has not been easy since she was little. She has only really had her brother to rely on and despite being a member of a pack they are not that good to her, restricting her wolf and making her pretty much an outcast within the pack. Honestly she is amazingly strong and resilient with everything she is put through.

Cannon is the Alpha of a visiting pack and he is completely dominant and there is something about Kezia that calls to him. Could he be a friend or foe? There are so many questions and I can't wait to see how their relationship plays out.

I was gifted a copy of this book by the Author and this is my honest opinion

I really enjoyed this book. As soon as I read the first page I was sucked in.
Kezia is a strong, feisty, sassy, says what she thinks regardless young woman/shifter and I loved her journey in book 1.

There is a good mixture of spice, humour, action and mystery!! I knew there would be a cliffhanger but thankfully we don't have to wait months.... I eagerly await the next chapter to see what happens next

I've decided that I absolutely hate writing reviews!!! Why? Because I honestly don't know how to explain how I feel about this book! I first started reading this series, which was originally started in a newsletter, many many months ago and I was gutted when they stopped appearing but I got the reason why, Eve was busy producing other amazing books. So when this suddenly became a book, to be honest I was nervous, I wasn't sure how it would work out but oh my days Eve has not disappointed in any way!!! Its got me simply gripped and I can not wait until the next book comes out.....the complex relationship between Kezia and Cannon is just intriguing and I seriously what to slap both of them. There are soooooo many unanswered questions and mystery that I just can't wait !!! Unique, mysterious, exciting, heart pounding because you just don't know whats going to happen next ,.....why are you still reading this review? Go.....go get it, get reading and then you'll see exactly what I'm trying to say!! The best read for a long time ....you're welcome by the way !!!

This is book one of The Blackridge Pack series and Kezia and her brother Kris (Kristoff) lost their parents when they were very young, after they were murdered in front of them and their mother told them to run. Kezia had been in her wolf form at the time and stayed in it for years, as her brother tried to keep them safe. He finally brought her to the Anterrio Pack, who allowed them to be part of their pack, but had a lot of conditions for Kezia, since she had spent so many years in her wolf form. She was not allowed to shift for some eight years and had to learn to live as a human, but didn’t really make any friends in the pack, other than the Pack Leader Bale’s twins Cass and Landon. Kris worked his way up to being Beta of the pack and involved in its security and secretly taught Kezia how to fight, something this pack did not allow their females to do. Kezia is still thought of as being wild and untamed, almost feral or rogue if she shifted and has to have her blood tested by the pack’s shaman every time she goes out to hunt or into the nearby town the pack runs. The Luna Ball is approaching and her friend Cass is overly excited about going and what they will both wear, whilst she has no interest in it at all! The ball will bring in wolves from other packs, hoping to find mates or fated mates amongst the packs on that night.

Kezia has been exceedingly short tempered and her brother thinks her first heat is coming and it could happen during the ball, which would be a disaster, as it would drive all the single males insane with need for her. Bale and Kris have already discussed what will have to happen to her if this is the case, without her input as usual. He will be needed to work as security for the ball, especially with so many other packs around. He wants her to stay in the house, but she has to get supplies alone when he is called away. A wolf from the Blackridge Pack starts talking to her and is quite friendly which she didn’t expect, but she was told to interact with no one by Kris, so she has broken his rules already. She meets another wolf, Cannon, outside as he surprises her by sneaking up on her unheard. He calls her pup and seems to be able to push her buttons easily. Kris isn’t happy, but then she couldn’t exactly be rude to one of their guests, not knowing it was the pack alpha’s younger brother and the alpha himself! Her heat starts just as she tries to start making the dinner, and Kris has to hurry her to the cells below the hall, to lock her away securely, away from all the other males. The other alpha, Cannon, is there as well as Kris and Pack Leader Bale, which makes it all the worse for Kezia, as her heat explodes.

She is brought a fresh deer to feed upon, but then her wolf will need to run and do one more thing to stop the heat, which she isn’t up to discussing with Cannon. Kris is wary of the Blackridge Alpha, he needs to protect his sister in any way he can, but he can’t leave the pack for reasons of his own. He lets her out for the second part of her need during her heat, but once they are far away, he tells her to keep on running and not to come back until he finds her. He needs to find out more information and search for the truth about what happened to their parents and why, while she will be free from a pack who didn’t trust her! She has no idea how the human world works and has to slowly figure out how to find somewhere to stay for a few weeks at a time, whilst also earn enough money to keep herself going. She gets mixed up in human illegal fight nights, but that brings its own trouble to her. She could sense she was being watched but could never see who it was, or if there was even someone there. She finds acceptance of a kind from two women in one town, but trouble finds her and she ends up as a victim of evil, which she only just manages to escape, only to be found in a weakened state by Cannon and his Beta Royce. He is not happy of the news she is being hunted for a triple murder and was posted as a missing person by the two ladies in the last town.

Cannon and his men had been tracking her since she ran away and now this alpha has a special interest in finding out the truth about what happened and what she did. Has she turned from the wild and untamed misfit, into being a rogue wolf, one that has killed humans and cold have put them all in danger of being discovered by the human world? If so, she is too dangerous to be released and Cannon will have to call in the Council. However reluctant she is to tell him exactly what happened, especially since she can’t remember huge parts of it, she is not the only one hiding secrets! Cannon has his own issues with Kezia and can’t keep away from her, but he does find out one very important fact about the humans who attacked her and how she reacted to what they used. He carries out his own experiments and forces Kezia into a situation as he needed her to, so he could control her with his alpha Will, rather than force it upon her in his wolf form. The two of them continue to buck heads, with her human side refusing to bow down to his alpha status, but also unable to refuse what he tells her to do when he is using his alpha voice to command her. A few surprises about her former pack and her brother, as well as the whole who gets a true fated mate scenario is played out, as Kezia refuses to bow down to Cannon’s demands and finds another who fakes a fated mate bond to get what they think they need. All very confusing for Kezia as her heat continues when a certain wolf gets near, whilst the discord between her and her wolf grow ever more pronounced as the reality of that bond is tested and shown to be highly unusual. Her very early childhood and whatever happened back then, has clearly affected the usual knitting together of her bond to her wolf and I can’t wait to see what it will bring up next for her and her brother, as well as to the whole fated mate scenario.

I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

He's an alphahole and I hate him, but her story is good on her own so I'm sticking with this series. I don't get how you can be so progressive in so many ways, yet do the trickery he's doing in addition to not trusting her when she had a very good reason for what she did. I'm just not feeling it with the MMC or Landon, tbh.

It also bugs me that her brother never checked in with her, but acts all worried when she comes back. Bro, save that fake care. You send her away with NOTHING because of your mate, say you were worried but never try to track her down until you hear she may be dead, and then play caring brother when she comes back? Nah.

Basically, the FMC, shaman, and the MMC's Beta and brother are the only characters I like in this book. Hopefully Book 2 makes me like the others better.

You know, I prefer that when the FMC reveals that she was previously shot with silver bullets that her mate says “who did this to you” etc etc instead of shooting her AGAIN with a silver bullet as an experiment to see what would happen. Also that maybe he lets her out of the cage he’s been holding her in because she killed some humans (who shot her with silver bullets!) instead of insisting that she’s bad and needs to be locked up. That doesn’t scream romance to me, but idk just personal preference I guess.

Also her brother kind of sucks??? Sure he cared for her for 15 years or whatever, but then he just sends her off into the woods with no money or resources or place to go???

one of the best reads

I’ve been reading ONLY Werewolf fiction for 6-7 years, across so many platforms. Some are good, most fair and then there’s the occasional Great story… New plot, not drawn out. This is a GREAT STORY… It’s been a long time since I read a book and didn’t realize it ended… I don’t want to break from reading, like most books lately.. I’m excited to read the next book in this series!

The story so far is great. It has ALL the elements that I love to read.

Action, fighting and sometimes fighting between the love interest. There is a possibility that the bad guy is right there in front of their faces... Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Are you looking for a fresh angle for a paranormal romance? Look no further than this book by Mitchell has a storyline driven by a tough from the-beginning main female lead who is not afraid to challenge those who constantly try to break her! If you are looking for a storyline that takes on a lift of its own with a romance between two characters whose chemistry burns up the pages, this book is definitely for you!

Kezia has always known she is different and is not afraid to go against the grain even when everyone has told her to back down. She is constantly being challenged to submit by others who try to break her will. I love how she is written in a way that doesn't she doesn't ask for forgiveness for who she is unless it's for someone she loves.

Cannon is described as a man I would love to meet in real life. He is protective, supportive, and a team player. He is also one of the toughest Alphas in the territory. Even when trying to suppress his feelings/attraction to Kezia, he can't help but care for her. Mitchell wrote him with a vulnerable side that Kezia seems to bring out just by being in his vicinity.

The storyline itself is not easy to guess, with plot twists around every corner, and when I think I'm beginning to grasp what is going on, Mitchell throws in a curve that takes me down another possibility. This is where Mitchell is most vital in her ability to wield the words that keep the reader guessing at what is happening next, along with the will they or won't they, and when the heck will they story that kept me enthralled in the two sittings it took me to read this book. Let's face it: kids and work got in the way of finishing it in a sitting.

WOLF’S GAMIBT is the first instalment in Eve L Mitchell’s contemporary, adult THE BLACKRIDGE PACK erotic, paranormal romance series. This is thirty-two year old, Blackridge Pack alpha Cannon and eighteen year old Kezia’s story line.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kezia and Cannon) WOLF’S GAMBIT follows in the years after the death of Kezia and Kris’ parents. Wolf shifters, without a pack, Kezia and Kris were taken in by the Anterrio Pack but Kezia never felt welcomed and with the approach of her first ‘heat’ Kris forces his sister to run in an effort to save herself from what was to come. Months by herself on the road ended when Kezia found herself imprisoned by the Alpha of the Blackridge Pack, an Alpha who is determined to claim Kezia as his own but Kezia knows all is not well, and there is more to her story than she could possible know. As Kezia continues to fight her attraction to Cannon, someone else is forcing his claim against our story line heroine.

WOLF’S GAMBIT is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance. The fast paced premise is intriguing and entertaining; the characters are powerful and determine. The relationship between Cannon and Kezia is fated but Cannon also struggles with his need for a woman he does not want. Kezia is unlike any female shifter in recent history, and in this, she has become a target for every shifter male. WOLF’S GAMBIT ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

{paranormal romance; m/f; dual pov; open door scene}

The Plot
------------

I am tired of fight clubs. I am tired of a teenager posing as an adult. The plot, however, is nice. There are two werewolf bands, and Kezia is coming into her first heat when the two are supposed to gather together. To protect his sister, the pack enforcer asks her to leave. For an 18-year-old, this seems like the perfect way to explore the world before going to college (ha ha).

Leave it up to Kezia to ruin my mood. 18 and obnoxious. I like her. I don’t like her. She is belligerent and apparently really great at breaking noses. I cannot relate to her.

She does find a new family home-away-from-home, and I hope she can return to it. But Fated Mate and her own accidental murder of her attackers gets in the way. Did I mention murder? Yeah, Kezia escapes rape and torture to find herself the center of a bloody mess. Does she contact the authorities? No, she hides the evidence and runs.

I liked the plot, and I liked the paranormal aspects. The wolf shifters have a bit of politics and rank, nothing special and that is what I wanted: a shifter society that matches my expectations.

I see a bit of fated mate, rejected mate, and pining.

Kezia, however, as the anchor, didn’t appeal to me. While I see the need to prove women’s equality right now, since our rights are being attacked in America, this isn’t the story.

The writing is too fast and direct to make a poetic or political statement.

3.5 ⭐️

There’s so many standalone shifter books and not enough shifter series with a solid plot. This series has potential and the author leaves you very curious about where the series will go.

What I enjoyed:
- Kezia is an absolute badass. It’s not often you get a female main character that is mouthy, opinionated, a true warrior with proof she’s actually good at fighting and not just “strong for a girl”, as well as in a fighting ring. She gets softer through the series and I am concerned some of her spunky attitude is whittling away, but I still really enjoy her.
- Unique character names
- Plot that keeps you guessing
- Somewhat slowburn. They’re definitely enemies to lovers and he does some fucked up shit, but also there’s some spice in this book already.
- Royce & Nikan…I can’t wait to see both of their and Kezia’s relationship build, as I can tell that both of the guys will be great friends
- Lottie & Maggie…this author really makes you like the side characters!

What I didn’t enjoy:
- Female white wolf and male black wolf 🙄 This shit is so overdone. Give them different coloring, some markings, really ANYTHING other than this. It’s so bland.
- I know Kris means well, but I continue to be disappointed in him throughout the book.
- The “cliffhanger” was a bit dull

Overall, the book was great and I read it in one sitting! There’s a lot of potential, which warrants the rating it got. Now, here’s to hoping book 2 doesn’t disappoint!

Wolf's Gambit by Eve L Mitchell Book 1 in The Blackridge Peak Shifters series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶💀💀
As soon as I finished the book, I wanted to reread it. The draw in these characters are magnetic. The mystery is alluring. Not to mention the fierceness and absolute sarcasm of Kezia. As feisty as she is, she's also her worst enemy. Her mouth gets her in so much trouble that I actually pity her brother Kristoph and her unwanted mate Cannon. The slow burn is of the scale and their resistance breaking. However with all this, there is unlining mystery, unanswered questions and uncertainty to the past and future. It's generally what you expect from shifter romance, intrigue and shifter politics but Eve L Mitchell story rings a uniqueness plus it drew me in. I should know better not to start a book in the middle of the night. Lol.
Tropes:
Shifters. Unique wolf. Forced Proximity. Found family. Rejected mate. Slow burn. Triggers.
Quotes:
“She beat you because she’s better, not because she shifted. You don’t need to taste her blood, old man. Any shifter worth his salt knows that girl’s been away from her wolf form for too long.”

“Let them see you, pup,” he told me.

“Can we please stop talking about anyone’s balls and my mate in the same sentence?” He was such a grump. Wait. What? My eyes opened in alarm. Pushing myself into a sitting position, I looked at three very guilty faces. I locked eyes with Cannon. “What did you just say?”

When Kezia and Kris’s parents were killed she stayed in her wolf form for about 6 years until Kris found a pack to take them in. She wasn’t allowed to shift until after she was in her teens because she had been feral and was forced into being a female again. Made friends with the pack leaders twins, Kris was one of the betas. Kezia was put in a cell for a problem that she got but the visiting alpha’s wolf wanted her but she totally hated him. Kris took her out running then told her to run for good, got to a place she felt somewhat comfortable but then Bullet chased her. Got to another place Bullet found her took her but her wolf took care of them, went running ended back at the first person’s house that helped her. Cannon found her there, Bullet had shot her with silver bullets Cannon put her in a cell. Kezia was told that she was his mate she waited until they made a mistake and left the cell dorm unlocked. Kris found her in the cave where they had first lived took her back to the pack Cannon found her again. The shaman gave her herbs to cover her scent and Kris gave her money she left again hoping Cannon wouldn’t find her. Good book!.

Trying to Fit In . . .

Kezia and her brother, Kris, did not have an easy time of things. Their parents were dead and they had to find a pack to take them in. Although the Anterrio Pack accepted them, Kezia was uncomfortable being there. As her “heat” was coming on, her brother told her to run in case something unpleasant was being planned for her. When she was captured by Cannon, the Alpha of the Blackridge Pack, she tries to resist that attraction. But there are others who want to claim her as things get complicated. Landon, her best friend Cass’ brother, is one who will probably try to insist that he is her mate. Kris knew Landon was not her mate. But Kezia is not safe and her brother wants her to again leave and go into hiding. The shaman could stop her heat and mask her scent. Kris will come for her where she is hiding to bring her back when she will be safe. She can’t even tell her best friend Cass because Landon is her brother. How will it work out? And how long will she be forced to wait for the Council’s intervention? Will she still continue to push Cannon away? There is much more to come, so stay with the series!

It's been a while since I've read, and been totally entranced by, a shifter romance but Wolf's Gambit has grabbed hold of me and who knows when I'll be released from it's clutches.

Eve L Mitchell is very clear from the foreward that this will end in a cliffhanger. I know, l know, it's frustrating but knowing in advance definitely makes the pill a bit easier to swallow.

The initial story of Kezia, her brother Kris and their pack, develops quickly into something with more twists, turns and intrigue that you'll be reluctant to set it down.

I love Kezia's smart mouth and fighting spirit and cheer her on throughout Wolf's Gambit, the first part of her story.

However, the anticipation of what book 2 could or will bring is very real and I will be waiting somewhat impatiently for it to publish.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I literally could not put it down. This book had me hooked from the first chapter. I’m such a sucker for a kick butt FMC, slow burn shifter romance. I’m normally one of those dreaded readers that doesn’t like to start a series unless it’s complete (I can’t handle the suspense) BUT I don’t regret starting this one. It does end on a cliff hanger, but not a terrible one. Start this series with me so we can live in suspense together! You won’t be disappointed. Don’t start this book on a day where you have plans to do anything other than curl up with this fantastic read!!

Black ridge pack

Definitely different from the genre. This wolf shifter story is deep and intelligently written. The plot keeps evolving and mysteries abound. There is some deep secret that some characters seem to know or suspect, but our heroine doesn't seem to know it. This volume describes Kazia's and her brother's life in her adopted pack, then her turmoil as she lives alone on the run in the human world. Apparently she has a mate who is torn between wanting her and hating who she is, and locks her up as a rogue. She and her wolf are different from other shifters in that they are separate entities. She really can't seem to catch a break. I'm hoping a lot of these mysteries are clarified in the next book, because, as is this book just leaves me unsatisfied.
