Dear Eliza

Rate this book
Ten years after her mother’s death, Eliza Levinger never imagined she’d hear from her again. But then The Letter arrived.

Eliza’s world broke apart when she was sixteen and her mom died of cancer. Now, years later, she has rebuilt her life to include a director-of-development job at a nonprofit, a Manhattan apartment, and an easy-on-the-eyes bedroom buddy—just the kind of no-strings relationship she wants, even if it’s less than her best friend, Mo, thinks she deserves. But when Eliza’s dad dies unexpectedly, her beloved aunt Claude arrives at the shiva with a letter from her mom—to be opened only after her father’s death. Inside the letter? A bombshell.

Suddenly, all of Eliza’s relationships are upended. Her brother is angry, her stepmother is threatening to disinherit her, and Mo—who has always been her rock—doesn’t seem to understand what she’s going through. But as Eliza struggles to cope with the shocking news, she finds an unexpected ally—her brother’s best friend, Josh—her high school crush, whom she’s tried hard to forget. It’s not in Eliza’s nature to trust . . . but maybe it’s time for that to change. Perfect for fans of Emily Giffin, Katherine Center, and Jennifer Weiner, Dear Eliza explores the meaning of family, the complexities of grief, and the beauty in finding your way again.

After the death of her father, Eliza receives a letter from her long-deceased mother via her aunt. The envelope says "To be given to Eliza on the death of her father" In the letter Eliza learns some very shocking news, so not only does she have to deal with her father's passing she also has to deal with the emotional revelations of her mother's letter.

Eliza's Mother wasn't in the book a lot but I hated her with a passion. What she did to her daughter, right after losing the only parent she had left, made me so angry. Children aren't stupid and you should always be honest with them, especially where this secret is concerned. I also had a hard time liking Eliza's brother, Rory and his wife. Why weren't they concerned for Eliza? And why didn't they have her back? They didn't consider her feelings. Don't Eliza's feelings count for anything? It seemed to me they didn't care about what she was going through in the slightest. Eliza really lost out in the family lottery. Fortunately she she has great friends in Mo and Josh not to mention a wonderful aunt and support system in Claude.

Written so realistically I loved following Eliza on her journey of discovery and falling in love. If you find my review light on the details it's because I'm being purposely vague, I don't want to give any spoilers away. One thing I didn't like about the book was that Eliza kept calling her parents by their first name, even in her head and in her internal thoughts. It boggled my mind why the author would do that.

How many of us grieving daughters would give anything to hear from our late mothers one last time? What if that meant hearing news that upended everything we thought we knew about ourselves?

Eliza Levinger was only sixteen when her mother died of cancer. Ten years later, Eliza certainly never expected to hear from her late mother again in a mysterious letter she receives from her Aunt Claude shortly after her father, Jack, dies unexpectedly. The letter has explicit instructions for Eliza to read only after her father dies. However, as surprised as Eliza is to receive a letter from her mother ten years after her death at her father’s shiva, nothing can be more shocking than the revelations the letter contains. Suddenly, Eliza’s older brother is upset with her, her stepmother wants to disinherit her, and she’s finding herself growing closer to a former high school crush she’s fought hard to forget about.

Dear Eliza explores the complexities of grief, the various definitions of family, and the power of putting yourself first. I strongly connected to Eliza’s feelings of dissonance during shiva (the Jewish obligation for mourning certain family members such as parents), and highly suspect I would also be vulnerable to some of the self-sabotaging behaviors Eliza experiences if I were in my 20’s versus 41. One minor detail that resonated was Eliza lost her mother in May. Samesies, and can confirm that is a total crap month to lose your mom (spoiler: the other eleven months suck, too).

I truly loved watching Eliza’s growth and I’m a sucker for stories about found families.

What a journey this book was. The characters and their relationship dynamics pulled me into the story immediately. Eliza's character was so relatable, I could feel her grief and wanted to reach into the pages and hug her!

The heart of the storyline is centered around the grief of Eliza's parents passing, but it also explores many other themes. Friendships, sibling relationships, forgiveness and new love.

I am really going to miss these characters!!

This would make an excellent book club pick. There's so much to unpack and discuss. Can we get a book 2? :)

My thanks to the author herself and Flashpoint Books for this gifted copy! Dear Eliza hits shelves on October 8th!!

Dear Eliza is the second novel by American author. Andrea J. Stein. Eliza Levinger hasn’t finished grieving the loss of her mother at sixteen years of age. Her recovery wasn’t helped by a father who remarried less than a year after Laura Levinger died, and a stepmother who seemed to hate her. Still, Eliza has her apartment on the Upper East Side, a job she enjoys with a non-profit, and casual hook-ups that are satisfactory substitutes for romance.

But now Jack Levinger has suddenly died, and even though they had grown apart, it adds to her sense of loss. Then, her Aunt Claude, Laura’s younger sister, hands her a letter from her mom that contains a bombshell, something that throws everything she believed about her life into doubt.

When she accidentally broadcasts the shocking information wider than intended, her step-mother gets nasty, her older brother isn’t as supportive as she would have expected, and her best friend doesn’t seem to be taking it seriously. Surprisingly, it’s her brother’s best friend who steps up with understanding and practical help. But Eliza is wary of getting too close to Josh: her teen crush ended with his ghosting her just when she badly needed a friend.

It takes a while for her to realise that her reactions, and those of people close to her are, in part, justifiable anger that Laura would have directed this revelation to be dropped on her just when she has lost her father. She reluctantly has to rethink how she sees her beloved mother, even as she deals with her step-mother’s antics.

Stein gives the reader both topical and age-old themes: grief, family dynamics, friendship, infidelity, inheritance, step-parents, and new love: lots for book clubs to focus on, and the eventual romance was sweet. But revealing the contents of the letter would be a major spoiler, so… Very enjoyable.

As a woman who lost her mom- this book absolutely made me feel all the feels.

Grief, love, frustration, etc. Add in hard family dynamics and the struggle of sometimes prioritizing yourself.

I found so much of myself connected to Eliza. A super powerful story that is well written & thought out and can truly bring out every emotion in you.

An absolutely amazing story, 4 star worthy and absolutely worth the read.. publish date 10/8/24!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this super touching arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was a beautifully layered family drama that draws you right into the complexities of grief. After the passing of her father, Eliza receives a letter from her late mother holding a major bombshell, shaking the very foundation of her identity.

With her inheritance at risk and her relationship with her brother placed in the middle, I was so eager to see how everything would unfold. I loved seeing her navigate such a complex situation, with her already conflicted feelings of grief further tested. It’s an incredibly unfair position she’s placed in, and with no one to turn to for clear answers, I could truly feel Eliza’s isolation.

But it’s not all heavy—there’s a sweet, slow-burn romance with her brother’s best friend that I adored. He’s her comfort, always there to provide hope in the midst of all the chaos. It was such a heartwarming contrast to the rest of the drama, and it felt super natural and genuine.

This was an engaging story filled with wonderfully crafted characters who felt like real people. I’ve had this author’s first book, Typecast, on my TBR since its release, and I’m so glad I finally gave her writing a try. I'm definitely a fan!

(heat level: one open-door scene, mild details)

I voluntarily read and reviewed and advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Dear Eliza is an emotional read. I would describe it as contemporary women's fiction with some romance. I'd also consider it a family drama.

The story takes place in New York City. The narrator is 26 year old Eliza (3rd person POV).

This book has good Jewish rep. There are lots of Jewish references, including the book starting at Eliza's dad's shiva. I knew before reading Dear Eliza that the character's mother had passed away 10 years earlier. But I was not expecting this to be such a big part of the story. So between this and the dedication (to the author's mom) parts of this book were quite hard for me to read.

I definitely connected with Eliza. In this book she receives a letter from her mother. I would suspect that many readers (like myself) would do anything to be able to receive a letter from their mom. So I did find this main aspect of the book to be very relatable.

I liked the relationships that Eliza had with her brother Scott and her best friend (Mo). I thought that the relationship with her stepmother Carol made the book very interesting. I really liked the romantic lead a lot. However I definitely wish that the romance had been a bigger part of the story. Also, I found that the secret in the letter and how that played out was such a good plot point.

Overall, this was such a quick read. I was very invested in the story. It was a moving story and made me feel a lot. I just didn't realize how much of the book would focus on her mom's death.

Thanks to Flashpoint Books, the author and netgalley for allowing me to read this book.

I haven't read an entire book in one day in quite a while, so it was nice to have the chance to devour Andrea J. Stein's sophomore novel, Dear Eliza. It's a compelling story that is equal parts heartbreaking and uplifting.

I don't want to say too much as to not spoil anything, but from the moment Eliza reads the letter from her mom, you will feel like you're on a journey with her. There's a lot more to the story than just what is written in the letter, including a focus on Eliza's career and love life. Andrea handles the subject of grief in a sensitive and exploratory way, especially since Eliza has lost both her parents and is learning new things about herself as a result.

It would have helped to indicate the year that the story takes place. That lack of information had me doing mental math because I thought it was set in the present and things just weren't adding up. I also wish there had been more Jewish elements aside from just attending shivas and mentioning a Bar Mitzvah photo.

Side note: I had "Dead Mom" from Beetlejuice the musical in my head from reading this novel. It's actually a great song and it fits the premise in some ways.

Overall, this was a great novel and I look forward to reading more from Andrea in the future! Dear Eliza is releasing next month, so be sure to add it to your fall TBR! In the meantime, read Andrea's debut, Typecast.

I have never read an Andrea J Stein novel before, but I’m sure glad I read DEAR ELIZA! What a beautiful story! I’m very excited to read her previous book now. This absorbing story combines both the beautiful sensory details of heartfelt characters, a moving plot, and a story with so much depth. DEAR ELIZA is an emotional read with characters I rooted for, and some lovely details that brought the city of New York City to life. I highly recommend this story if you need a complete escape from life. It will also give you all the feels!

DEAR ELIZA explores family dynamics, loss, secrets, and a new romance! Andrea J Stein handles difficult topics and has the reader cheering for everyone to succeed. When I started reading DEAR ELIZA, I didn’t know I’d come to love it this much. Where to start? Eliza is such a great character, full of life and warmth. I loved how she didn’t let her past troubles destroy herself completely. Ten years after her mother died and her father just passing away, Eliza is struggling. She received a letter that her mother wrote to her from her aunt that wasnt to be opened until the death of her father, and Eliza’s world turns upside down. While all of this is going on she leans on her old friend, Josh. Oh and I have to mention that Eliza has a step mother, Carol who married her dad and never quite fit in with Eliza’s family! She has a very big part in this story!

I don’t want to say too much for fear of giving away too much of DEAR ELIZA but once I started reading this beautiful and heart breaking story, I could not stop! Everyone should have this unforgettable book on their fall reading list. After the letter is opened, Eliza’s older brother is mad at her and Carol was to disinherit her. The dialogue between Eliza and Josh is sometimes funny and other times frustrating! They both have secrets and without letting them out, they will not be able to move forward. I was instantly emotionally invested in all of the characters from page one and I can not wait to read more by this wonderful and heart tugging author.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.

4.25 ⭐️ What a delightful surprise! "Dear Eliza" takes us on a heartfelt journey through the many sides of grief, a feeling we all share yet experience in our own unique ways. Eliza discovers just how unpredictable grief can be. Some days feel overwhelmingly heavy, but she gets up, gets dressed, and moves forward as best as she can. Through her journey, she learns to lean on friends and family. “The people who are worth having in your life will stay.”

I absolutely love the romance between Josh and Eliza! It’s wonderfully subtle yet swoony. These two are destined to be together from the start - ”it's always been you” trope. Josh is not just patient and supportive; he’s an incredible listener who stands by Eliza as she navigates her journey through grief. Their connection is beautifully genuine and full of promise!

Other highlights: Jewish rep, evil stepmother, family drama, found family, brother’s best friend trope

Dear Eliza by Andrea J Stein. Thanks to the author for the gifted Arc ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Eliza’s father passes, her aunt gives her a letter from her mother, who passed when Eliza was sixteen. The letter rocks her world and changes all her relationships.

My favorite thing about this story is that it felt so real. There was nothing wild or too unexpected. It was real life and real emotion. There was conflict, growth, and a slow burn romance as a sub plot.

Dear Eliza comes out 10/8.

Eliza Levinger never got over losing her mother at a young age. Complicating matters is an estranged relationship she had with her father who in Eliza’s eyes, had no problem moving on-remarrying rather quickly. So when Eliza’s father dies, unresolved emotions begin to bubble to the surface. Suddenly Eliza finds herself processing not only the grief of losing a man she always assumed she’d have more time with, but the mother whose time she briefly shared which will never be enough.

But things go from macabre to messy rather quickly when Eliza receives a letter from her deceased mother. Written when she was alive, her aunt was instructed to give the letter to Eliza upon her father’s death. Only the letter reveals a bombshell- the man Eliza knew as her father was not actually her biological parent after all.

Left reeling, Eliza has important decisions to make. Should she find her biological dad? Will he want a relationship with her? And how will this impact the relationships she does have with her brother, stepmother, and the one that got away?

Dear Eliza is a heartfelt story of lost and found family. I especially loved the inclusion of Monk, a comfort show of mine as well. felt for Eliza and her situation and wanted the majority of the people in her life to be more supportive of her struggles. It’s a powerful tale of a strong woman who finds herself starting over in unexpected ways, and one worth adding to your TBR.

I just finished Dear Eliza and I'm going to miss these characters!

This novel skillfully examines how family ties unravel when the loss of a parent exposes a shocking secret that sends a young woman reeling. Timely and relatable, Dear Eliza is a perfectly-paced exploration of loss, love, and learning how to carry on when your world is turned upside down.

If I'd had more time, I'd have read it straight through. If you loved Andrea Stein's Typecast, a character makes a fun cameo appearance in this story.

Brimming with just the right mix of humor and heart, Dear Eliza is sure to be a book club favorite. Definitely lots to think about and discuss!

Thank you Girl Friday Productions -- Flashpoint for allowing me to read and review my choice from your catalog on NetGalley where I chose Dear Eliza by Andrea J. Stein making me a better person.

Published: 10/08/24

Stars: 4.5

The synopsis is clearly written. Dear Eliza is a touching story that evoked frustrations in myself and my ineptness at choosing a nice read for more than three-quarters of the book. Like a puzzle, out of no where the missing piece appeared. I suddenly saw different sides to all the characters. I braced myself for the Author's ending (not mine) and I'm glad I did.

The story seamlessly weaves young Eliza with almost thirty Eliza. She has both parents die, a bad step-mother relationship, a brother, sister-in-law, and brother's friend experiences. She receives a life changing letter from her deceased mom ten years after her death and right after her father's. This letter changes everything she thought she knew, and is given when there is no one to ask for details.

I loved the story once it was finished. As I was reading my head was not in line with Stein. The story made me look at myself. The devil is in the details (I still harbor letter resentment.) Eliza had a different life than I and Stein took me places with the stepmother I would have never thought about.

I do wish Stein would cease F in her works, zero tolerance is not 1 or 2.

I recommend this wholeheartedly. If a young reader is placed in Eliza's situations I pray they have a good listener around them.

Losing a parent is hard at any age. Losing a parent - especially one you have a close relationship with - as a child leaves you with scars you’re just not prepared to address or even acknowledge. DEAR ELIZA is a deeply emotional book dealing with grief and loss and the long, often painful, road to healing.

Eliza’s first experience with loss came at the age of 16 when her mother died after a battle with cancer. Eliza didn’t have time to process her profound grief before her dad remarried less than a year later. Her relationship with her father never recovered, leading to unresolved tension between them. When her dad dies unexpectedly a decade later, Eliza receives a letter from her long dead mother that upends her life as she knows it and threatens the few relationships she thought she could count on.

Eliza’s experience is not an easy one and Andrea Stein does not sugar coat the struggle. Eliza’s pain is raw and palpable. Ultimately this is a story of healing, acceptance, and forgiveness. Getting there is messy, but there’s an underlying theme of hope that propels Eliza - and the reader - forward. There is also a romance element to this story which is deftly integrated into Eliza’s journey.

Thank you to my partners, Kate Rock Book Tours and Flashpoint Books, and the author. I appreciate the gifted and signed paperback! I am leaving this review voluntarily!

1. 𝐆𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐟 - Eliza has so much grief in her life and we see her struggle to come to terms with all of it. It truly makes one consider just how much one can take.

2. 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡 - What an incredible bomb that is dropped on Eliza right away. Her father’s death brings about this enormous secret that completely upends her life.

3. 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 - Quite a look into the trials that many families encounter. From the realization that things may not have been sunshine and roses with her parents to the difficulties that come with her stepmother, the problems just didn’t let up for Eliza. And why stop there - add the stress put on her relationship with her brother.

4. 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 - This is evident in both friends and what ends up being blood relatives. Eliza’s best friend, Mo, is a godsend to her and her work family is always looking out for her. Then there is the one person she didn’t even know existed - and that is not always comfortable ride.

5. 𝐈𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 - Nothing better than a brother’s-best-friend trope thrown into the mix to give us some serious butterflies! Josh and Eliza were obviously meant for each other, and this is so obvious from the get-go that I don’t feel like I’m spoiling anything here!

Although the premise of Dear Eliza really drew me in, the execution fell quite flat. Between the writing style and the unlikeable characters, I couldn’t connect with the storyline. The conversations felt very unnatural and often made the characters feel more like caricatures than well-developed, believable people. It also struck me as odd that Eliza kept referring to her parents by their first names, and it kept taking me out of the story.

I did appreciate the journey Eliza needed to take- not only navigating grief, but also having to face the reality that her parents were fallible humans. However, I wish her journey had brought more emotion out of me. Even though I’m an easy crier, I somehow didn’t shed one tear while reading this story about a woman whose life has been turned upside down by the discovered secrets of her late mother.

Dear Eliza comes out October 8, 2024. Thank you to NetGalley and Girl Friday Productions for an early copy of Dear Eliza.

This is a lovely novel about a young woman coping with the death of a parent who is confronted by a letter left for her by her deceased mother. The information comes as a shock and starts Elizabeth on a journey of discovery that encompasses everything she believed and all of the people she loved.

I really loved this book and I’m so grateful that NETGALLEY provided the ARC.
I enjoyed going on Eliza’s journey. I enjoyed exploring the never ending relationship between mother and daughter, even after death.

This is a real winner!

This story shows the struggles of losing parents, of going through that grief and losing yourself amidst it. But it also shows healing and forgiveness!

I loved the characters. I loved Eliza and enjoyed watching her figure her life out. After losing her mom, and then her dad, she receives a letter her mother had written before her passing with a secret that changes everything- or maybe changes nothing at all. Does finding out her dad isn’t her biological father make the relationship they had any less? Or is the love, although rocky, they shared still as important?
I loved seeing her work through those feelings. I also loved that her and Josh eventually came together. It was definitely a slow burn but you know from the first kiss that they’re meant to be together and meant to help one another through everything life throws their way.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one. It was well written and full of emotion!

Can one letter change everything? Eliza is about to find out.

Ten years after her mother’s death, twenty-six-year-old Eliza has compartmentalized her grief. She has a cozy apartment in New York, a promising career at a non-profit, and a casual, purely physical relationship with a handsome man without strings attached.

When her father unexpectedly dies, she is blindsided, even more so when her Aunt Claude arrives at Shiva with an envelope addressed to Eliza—a letter from Eliza’s mother. The letter, in which Eliza’s mother reveals a shocking secret about her family, shakes the young woman to her core. Eliza suddenly questions everything about her life. To make matters worse, when she reveals the letter’s contents to her brother, he is angry and distant, causing palpable friction between the siblings. Then, her frigid stepmother wants to cut Eliza out of the will!

Eliza is grappling with mixed emotions—shock, rage, and despair. Despite her need to seek closure, she knows there is no going back once she starts digging. Overwhelmed about where to begin, her brother’s best friend, Josh (on whom Eliza harbored a childhood crush), offers to help. Between her family life unraveling, mounting work pressures, and trying to decode the mixed signals she’s getting from Josh, Eliza wonders how she will make it through.

“Dear Eliza” by Andrea J. Stein is an emotionally charged novel about grief, family, and finding your roots. Some families love one another unconditionally, and others keep secrets—the kind that upend your life. Set in bustling New York, the story follows Eliza as she navigates the loss of her father while digesting the secret unearthed. Her grief becomes complicated after the proverbial bomb has been dropped, and Eliza is left scrambling, trying to salvage the jigsaw puzzle that is her life.

Many of us can relate to some sort of startling revelation (maybe not to this extreme) that alters the trajectory of our lives. It changes how we see things—our past and current relationships. Dealing with her father’s death and uncovering new, life-altering information forced Eliza to see her late mother in a different light. For so long, she had placed her mother on a pedestal, but learning the truth meant Eliza’s acceptance that her mother wasn’t immune to making mistakes, nor was her father entirely at fault for their shaky relationship. Stein has done an excellent job of showing readers that things aren’t always what they seem, and sometimes secrets, painful as they might be, have a way of putting things in perspective.

Andrea J. Stein excels at tugging on readers’ heartstrings. There was no shortage of emotional scenes in “Dear Eliza.” While the poignant plot often had me swallowing the lump in my throat, Eliza’s journey had many uplifting moments, like heart-fluttering romance, root-worthy confrontations, and an array of quirky characters. What initially began as an impossibly painful situation evolved into something beautiful and validating. This book will appeal to readers drawn to books about resilience and self-discovery.

This is a beautiful story that touches on dealing with grief and family drama.

When Eliza’s dad passes, she receives a letter that her mom has written her before she passed away. This letter changes Eliza’s world.

I enjoyed following Eliza’s journey and it all felt very real. I also enjoyed the heartwarming romance that was included but not the sole focus.

It was very well-written and the pacing was good. Be sure to check it out!🩵

When I was about 10-years-old, I learned the same thing that Eliza did (and while I won't say what it is because I don't want to spoil anything) I connected with her on that shocking revelation.

And how it can sort of shift the way you see yourself.

I thought this book was a really beautiful navigation on grief, on how death can alter family dynamics, and on figuring out who you are.

While there's a little bit of romance in the story, I appreciated that it wasn't the main factor. Instead we got to move through Eliza's new world with her, and really focus on her healing journey. I loved the honest emotions the characters went through and how Stein didn't shy away from some of the heavier feelings.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read with realistic characters, a crummy step-mother, and important life lessons on grief, forgiveness, and self-discovery.

I did receive a copy of the book in exchange for a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own

Un-put-down-able

It usually takes me quite some time to finish a novel. I only read at the end of the day and usually sleep whisks me away fairly quickly. But Eliza‘s story captured my attention and I found myself turning to the book during the day to find out what had happened next. I found the characters human and relatable, and some of the themes explored were extremely thought-provoking for me.

Big thank you to Andrea J. Stein & Flashpoint for the advanced reading copy and the physical copy!

While this story took me a little bit to get into, I ended up hooked by the end! Such a heartwarming and unique plot, full of beautiful words and characters. This book had it all -- grief, secrecy, intimacy, complicated family dynamics, character development/coming of age, friendship and found family. There were some very heartbreaking moments, and some that made me tear up with contentedness, or even joy. My favorite part of this story was, perhaps, the found family and the ways that Eliza created the support system that she needed after such loss. This is a great book to read when you need to feel something (or everything).

"Dear Eliza" by Andrea J. Stein is a captivating novel that explores themes of identity, family, and resilience. The story follows Eliza, a young woman navigating her way through life's challenges. Stein's writing is engaging, and her characters are well-developed and relatable.

What sets this book apart is its thoughtful portrayal of complex issues and the way it weaves them into a compelling narrative. Stein's prose is lyrical, making it easy to become immersed in Eliza's world.

Overall, "Dear Eliza" is a moving and thought-provoking read that will resonate with fans of contemporary fiction and character-driven stories. If you're looking for a novel that will linger with you long after you finish reading, "Dear Eliza" is definitely worth checking out.

I found the characters and storyline to be very uninspired. It felt like the majority of the story was filler, and not the interesting kind. Super disappointed. Wish I hadn't wasted an audible credit on this.

I am horribly remiss in submitting my review for this ARC so late, but better late than never, right?

Dear Eliza is a wonderfully easy and fun read. I'm a sucker for stories that are premised on a Big Secret Reveal, and Eliza gets the reveal of a lifetime when her father passes. In the aftermath of the bombshell, Eliza navigates her life and memories of the past, dealing with issues of grief and family complexity along the way. And of course, there's her brother's best friend, with whom she reconnects and grows closer to as she struggles to get a handle on her life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read and really connected with the main character. I think it's a testament to the story and the author's writing that almost half a year after I read this book, I still remember and like it enough to now be writing a review for it. To the author and publisher, my apologies for this review coming so late in the game, but well done and congrats on an amazing book, and thank you for gifting me a copy of the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Eliza is going through life's paces after her mom dies when she was 16. Now that her dad is also gone, Eliza receives a long-held letter from her mother that floors her and turns everything upside down. The news is both curious and causing waves all around her. The only one who seems to stand by her side is Josh, her brother's best friend.
I love a good sibling's best friend romance. They feel a little forbidden but so natural. I don't know anyone who hasn't had a crush (or been crushed on) in this exact sort of scenario. I liked the backstory and little extras that Andrea fills in to bring her characters to life. And Josh? Such a sweetheart.
Thank you to the author and Netgalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
