This absorbing book explores Israel and Israeli society through the lives of two childhood friends and their lives in the years 1968 through 2016. One Ashkenazic and one Mizrachi, each brilliant and talented in their own way, we explore their families, their psyches, and how their lives reflect Israeli society. The book succeeds as both a personal story and a societal exploration. It deals with how we absorb the culture of our parents and the society around us, and how those play out in our own lives and the decisions we make. Rubenstein accomplishes this through a beautiful book that drew me in from the first page and kept me engaged throughout.
