The sleepy town of Lordsland is rocked by a baffling storm, leaving the residents mystified to its origins. As the day progresses, an insidious evil leaves the entire town scrambling in a battle against the newly awakened dead. Part Necro, Part All Death and Destruction. Who will live, and who will join the shambling horde of undead?
Too many characters for my brain to keep up with but I liked the zombified animals (needed WAY more zombified raccoons though!) and the ending so there's that.
I really had no idea what this book was going to be about, but from the title I hoped it would be what I thought and it was. That made me so happy because this take on the beginning of the zombie apocalypse I don't think has been done before that I know of. Roles gives us a full cast of quirky characters that you can't help but adore. Even the not so nice characters, well all except one. The story takes off running from the first page and goes full speed ahead until the end.
Since I first really began my writing journey, RJ has been a constant companion. When we connected, he has always been nothing but kind and supportive and throughout this time, its been great to see his own journey from reader, to drabbler to short story writer to long fiction. His devotion to horror is well known, as the creator of the Books of Horror Facebook page and one of the current Admins and he’s even formed a small press and released a number of anthologies. Safe to say, RJ loves horror and whenever you read any of this stories, that love shines on every page.
When he announced his newest novel, ‘Necronado,’ I was stoked. Hot on the heels of reading Chris Sorensen’s ‘Bee Tornado,’ I was excited to see what type of crazy 80’s pulp Roles was going to deliver. Would we get a tornado of dead folks whipping through the town? Would we get demon wind? What would it be? Who would survive?
I dove in smiling as wide as a loon.
What I liked: The story takes place in a small town, something Roles always has a mastery of. Every character and place he sets his stories in feels alive, as though we’re walking with him through the dusty streets and saying hello to every neighbor. In this case, a goofy guy decides he wants to see what happens when a specific ritual is completed. So, him and his girlfriend head to the cemetery where they complete it and, as is ALWAYS the friggin’ case – all hell breaks loose.
From there, we arrive at a writer struggling to meet a deadline, with a wife and son. Unbeknownst to him, his wife has been sleeping with the guy who cuts the lawn. After a storm whips through, the secrets are revealed and he takes off. RJ sets things up really nicely, in preparation to knock everything back down. That storm brings with it the undead. And from that point on we get a really solid zombie novel, filled with plenty of gore, shredded skin and survival at all cost. The characters that RJ introduced us too are so well formed that you root for all of them, even that asshole neighbor that you initially want to see chomped.
Throughout, RJ weaves a well-created tale of characters banding together, the undead marching along without any thought but ‘kill,’ and it all leads to the finale where, like a match struck in the dark, Roles unleashes bloody chaos. It was a fitting ending and one that really closed off this cinematic narrative.
What I didn’t like: The epilogue. 100%. While I really enjoyed everything up to that point, even the volume of characters introduced, I felt everything that made this book feel like a familiar zombie movie you might’ve watched and loved fifty or twenty years ago was undone by the epilogue. I won’t say anything else about it, as I don’t want to spoil it, but it just didn’t work for me.
Why you should buy this: If you ever used to have a spinning magazine rack of books where you grew up, this book would be sitting on that rack and you would NEED to buy it because of that phenomenal cover. Then you’d read it and think ‘HOLY SHIT THAT WAS AMAZING!’ and tell all your buddies at school the next day. This novel is a true throwback to the 80’s horror that we all read or watched as kids. Roles nailed every aspect of this one and I think readers are gonna be raving about this one for years.
I mean, really. What did you really think would happen when you bring an oujia board to a cemetery. And one you got from goodwill, not a good mix. Freaking zombie chaos is what will happen. This was so fun and fast-paced. This was a new fresh twist on a zombie apocalypse. Great character development.
Do you like quirky characters, lots of zombies, and tornadoes? Well, come visit Lordsland for all your chaotic needs. The dead are walking, and they are hungry.
R.J.'s first full-length novel is an absolute winner. Fantastic blend of horror and comedy, a fast-paced, roller coaster ride from start to finish. There are some twists and turns that will knock your socks off. This is an excellent book. Do not miss it.
If you know me well, you know I love zombie books and movies!! And let me tell you, this was such a fun zombie apocalypse story!! 🙌
While there were lots of characters to keep track of, there still was great character development. I also listened to the audiobook while following along in the physical, and the narration was excellent!! Definitely pick this one up for a fun zombie read! 👏
This is RJs first full length novel, and what a novel it was. Im telling you now, there better be a lot more where this came from RJ, because this was an absolute breath of fresh air (ok, maybe not that fresh, it may have been a slightly rotten, decomposing and blood saturated breath) but it was an absolute blast to read, from start to finish!! Characters that you loved and loved to hate, a brilliant storyline, action-packed, with twists and turns, a smooth flowing narrative that hooks you in and keeps your every bit of attention throughout, and disgustingly divine descriptions seared onto your eyeballs, all this makes for one hell of a fun, addictive and completely immersive and insane read!! Hold on tight, it's gonna get wild!!
It all starts with Jerry and his girlfriend, Anna, when they head to the cemetery to perform a little ritual that Jerry found on the internet, I mean, what could possibly go wrong? It's a success….kinda…. but when all hell is unleashed in a brutal storm of mind blowing carnage and corruption, the town of Lordsland will never be the same again. Weird occurrences start to create chaos for the individuals and their families that reside in the small town, but what stems from this outbreak is far from small, it has a huge impact on the town and its residents, and they need to pull together and work as a team to stop the influx of townsfolk long gone, but not forgotten.
Alex and his friends are at school when things start to snowball out of control, including his teacher!! They may well have been safer outside with the walking dead then barricaded in a classroom whilst her mind snaps and she takes shockingly drastic steps to try and make things right. There is always one person who is prepared for this kind of thing though, they live for the day something like this happens and all the people that laughed behind their backs and thought they were crazy, come to them for help. In this case, that's where the standoff takes place and people show their true colours and fight to the death to protect their town. And yay for Chuck and his Hog!! I actually cheered out loud when I realised what he was going to do and it left a lasting impression in my mind for sure! 🤘😂🤘
All in all an absolute whirlwind of awesomeness, drenched in blood and littered with bones, with twists and turns that will leave you dizzy with satisfaction!! I LOVED IT!! 🖤🖤I also loved the familiarity of some of the names too, it was a nice touch and made you feel a bit more a part of the story!
I've lost count of how many zombie books I have read, but RJs story was definitely a great take on the genre. I loved the characters and all of their individual stories. The whole book was gory and fun with plenty of suspense and a few surprise incidences here and there. It didn't have my favorite epilogue, but it's one that I can see others enjoying tremendously. ( And I don't plan on expanding on that statement. You'll have to read the book and decide for yourself 🤷😁) This book is definitely worth a read.
Fun, gross, supernatural zombpoc fiction! I really enjoyed the story, however I didn’t feel that it brought anything overly unique to the genre. I was also left with a few questions: the significance of the tornado, why didn’t the older bodies (civil war) rise up, etc. Not sure how this is going to turn into a series, but it looks like that is the idea, so I’ll be interested in seeing how the next entries compare!
I am a huge fan of zombies. From “Evil Dead” to “Zombieland” to “iZombie,” I love all zombie. That being said, I completely devoured this book. When I tell you I thought about this book several times a day, just wanting to ignore adulting and read this book cover to cover… I’m barely touching the tip of the iceberg. I enjoyed this book so much that I would leave it’s kindle tab up on my phone all day long, to get to it quicker, even if I only had 5 minutes of free time, I was eating this book uuuuup. A couple of absolutely annoying characters get the brilliant idea to FAFO and they quickly find out… a crazy storm suddenly blows in and ultimately: goodbye, freaks… hello massive necro-sh!t-show. I felt like I was pulled into the story with the necronado’s assault on a small town, and with the skillful imagery and characterization, it is like a bad@ss zombie movie unfolding in your brain. I absolutely LOVED this zombie tale. Just the perfect blend of crazy and campy and bizarre… it’s written eerily realistically, like hey, it could totally have happened…. And with humor and gore and all of the best elements of a killer zombie tale, this book is one you Don’t want to miss out on.
So much fun! From the opening pages to the wrap up at the en, this was a great roller-coaster of gore, excitement, and harrowing character activities. Great first novel from a great author.
My first time reading a RJ Roles story. Definitely not my last. I wasn't sure what to expect but I have no regrets about purchasing this story.
There was never a dull mom, plot was engaging with a nice little twist. Characters are unique, believable and entertaining. The writing flows easily and makes it difficult to put the book down and do something productive. I stayed up until 0200 so I could finish this story. Well worth being tired the next day.
Writing a book about a zombie tornado is wild; RJ Roles did it though. This feels like a combo of Return of the Living Dead and The Mist; minus the completely pointless and bleak ending that… I’ll shut up. I’ve kind of gotten to a point where a zombie book has to either be hella inventive or hella fun, this was both. Roles makes his characters fun, his prose is solid, the gore feels straight out of a practical effects laden 80’s gem. I also want to mention I appreciate how West Virginian this book feels. If you’re from WV and know a storyteller, this feels just like that. It feels like some guy exaggerating everything in his own brand of weird. K thx.
This was such a fun read. It was a nice 80s horror-style story. If you know me, 80s horror has a special place in my heart. However, it mixes that with my first true love in horror, the zombie genre. There were plenty of characters to keep up with, but they were all interesting in their own way.
I found myself laughing at certain parts, which was a refreshing pace compared to what I've read lately. It had those Night of the Living Dead vibes for sure. Spoiler - There is one character who totally loses her mind and goes haywire on the religious aspect, but it wouldn't be a zombie book without that one person who snaps.
I know people will say zombies are played out, but RJ brought a fresh take to it using an Ouija board in a cemetery.
Overall, this is a fun 80s-horror romp that you will come to enjoy if you want something a bit more light-hearted.
Tornadoes, the undead- what more could you possibly want?! A fun, gory read that covers plenty of tropes but in the best way possible. RJ also gets extra points for using the word hellacious!
I went into this story cold. It's a witty yet creepy story. I love how the story unravels with a great cast of characters in a small town where everyone knows your name. I recommend this book to both Horror and non Horror readers.
My favorite book group on Facebook is Books of Horror. This group is owned by this author. It is a fabulous group.

This was a fun take on a zombie outbreak. My heart ached a few times during the struggles the characters went through. The humor in the story helped with any emotional trauma I was inflicted with. I'm excited for the next story from RJ!
Wait, why the hell aren’t we talking about this book more?! I know most people correlate RJ with BoH, but wtf, he’s also a phenomenal writer and I really feel like we need to be discussing it more often. 😅
This book was phenomenal and so fun to read. It had so many great horror elements and just totally unhinged in the best way possible. I audibly said “ow,” quite a few times, had quite a few chuckles, and of course asked myself “WTF,” every other page or so. 😂
After reading a couple other stories, I’ve realized rogue tornados and zombies are a favorite of mine. 🌪️💀 (I know, random AF) — That being said, I’m super willing to admit that this has been my favorite book to date to incorporate both at the same time in a horror book. 🤭 Oh, and the ending?! 🤯
I’ve read a couple short stories by RJ, but this is the first standalone and it certainly won’t be my last. My only regret is not reading this sooner and screaming for everyone to read it too. But better late than never. 🤷🏻♀️So now I’m yelling for everyone to run and grab this book asap and show RJ some love. Please and thanks.
If you play with Ouja Boards from Goodwill in an old cemetery, you’re gonna have a bad time. Shenanigans will ensue and they will not be cheeky or fun….unless you are the one reading about them. This book was a blast!
Necronado was one of the most fun books I’ve read this year. It starts off great and just keeps getting better. Action packed and a real page turner, you don’t want to miss out on Roles’ first full-length novel. 🧟 🌪️
Don't mess around with spells in cemetaries, it NEVER ends well. I don't want to give anything away, so just let that comment stay with you. Highly recommend 💀💀💀💀💀
I actually bought this book in both paperback and Kindle editions, because I was enjoying it so much I wanted to read it on the go, and didn't want to damage this perfect-sized little paperback and its glorious artwork. So when I saw the eBook was temporarily on sale for only 99 cents, I made sure to grab that too!
This was a fast-paced, heart-pounding novel that makes you want to keep reading. Every time I thought the story was winding down, another twist would develop, or another character would be introduced. It's the book that keeps on giving! The characters were engaging and easily likable (or hateable in the case of the schoolteacher.) Each had an interesting back story, and there were a couple I'd have loved to have learned more about such as Don, the ill-tempered neighbor, and L.T. the Doomsday Prepper. The best zombie stories are not necessarily all about the monsters, but also about the people involved, their problems and relationships, and their responses to the sudden disasters that fall upon them. This book delivers that on every level. The thing that struck me the most about the story was that it was a small town with a long history, a somewhat close-knit community where everyone knew everyone else so well that they could recognize a dead man by the clothes he was buried in. The fact that the dead rising and attacking them were friends, family members, longtime neighbors, and even one case, a beloved pet, was horrifying in a way I never thought of before reading this book. What if everyone you've ever known suddenly rose from the grave and was after you? RJ Roles created this absolutely spine-chilling imagery that kept me feeling uneasy from the first pages of the returned pet until the last page.
Now we need to talk about the Necronado! A tornado that rips through the living and reanimates the dead? I am living for this thing. I need to know more about it... everything, in fact. I am hoping for a sequel where we get some answers, or at least get to see it destroy another town or two! It says it is book one of the Cinema Obscura series, so I'm hoping that means we will be battening down for another storm in the near future.
I went into this with the mindset that this would be Twister with a tornado spitting out zombies...I wasn't far off 🤦♀️
Zombie stories aren't really my thing. I mean realistically there's only so much you can do with zombies and all of them have been to death a million times.
Fortunately, I don't really rate books based on whether or not I like them, but how much they keep me engaged. Believe it or not it's entirely possible to be held captive by a subgenre you're bored of; imagine that.
Anyway, the title leaves very little to the imagine and I imagine Roles got this ridiculous idea from watching something equally ridiculous on TV; like Sharknado.
The plus side? This is the first zombie apocalypse that starts from a tornado I think; it's the first I've read at any rate. The downside? That's about the only original thing in this story. Again, it's zombies; there's only so much that can be done with the walking dead that hasn't been done a million times. Oh, and the ending is definitely going to piss more than a few people off. It's another horror cliche that's been done a kajillion times. I swear it pissed me off because I should have expected it and I did not lol.
That being said, the book's as good as any zombie book can be. If zombies are your thing, you'll love this, I promise. If you're looking for a new way it gets started, you'll enjoy this. If you're tired of zombies, go find something else to read.
I will say, this might be a small spoiler, so skip this paragraph if you haven't read it yet: what was described was a Combine, not a Bush Hog. I live in farm country, tractors pulling Bush Hogs take up a whole lane doing 25, damn Combines take up both with their roller blades raised while doing 5 in a 65 every time I have drive the hour to go food shopping. It was an ingenuous use of the equipment though. Kudos.
The book is entertaining, the characters are likeable and very nicely built. I may be bored of the zombie trope, but I'll still give them a chance because they ARE classic horror at this point.
I really wanted to like this. This started so strong and the first chapter set up what could have been a fun different take on the zombie genre. Honestly they could remove the ‘Nado’ from the title because it was near non existent. When the book is called Necronado, you kind of expect ongoing tornadoes with dead people, just my thoughts. I mean, Sharknado didn’t hold back on that element. The characters were interesting, but could have been fleshed out a bit more. Back stories were implied but never really expanded on. Why did Marie have an affair? Why did the teacher go back shit crazy immediately? What happened between Lilly and LT? A bit frustrating. As the story went on, it felt like just another take on ‘Night of the Living Dead’, starting at a cemetery, undead rises, group of strangers end up boarding themselves up at a remote farmhouse fighting off the zombies. But my biggest issue by far was with the last chapter. I feel that the biggest cheat a reader (or viewer, because this happens in tv and movies all the time), is for the whole story was just a dream sequence and none of the had actually happened (in this case, the story that the main character was writing). This lost a whole rating star just because of this. I really wanted to like this, and by the end, I thought it was ok, but the last attached chapter just made me a bit mad.

Sleepy, creepy little town? Hell yes, this is going to be unhinged. A crazy storm washes in something, not quite right, and a little bit undead. Not to bad right, fighting the shambling undead, a breeze, but as all things in small towns, it cannot just be easy.
Also this is the reason I do not mess with ouija boards, I’m not saying I believe, but I am saying, I have read enough and seen enough bad things, to think, this might be a good idea to just not do.
I regret not picking this up sooner, its actually really good and that’s coming from a not so zombie obsessed reader, they are cool but, I see it a ton already, this though was fucked up and felt different from the normal stuff.
I said WTF so many times, and I freely admit I never once stopped to think what the title actually meant until I was neck deep in this, and it clicked, “oh..okay..” What the fuck??
Loved this, if you llike zombies, tornadoes, laughing, or you know just reading in general, check this out, its well worth the read.
