Marvin A. "Marv" Wolfman is an award-winning American comic book writer. He is best known for lengthy runs on The Tomb of Dracula, creating Blade for Marvel Comics, and The New Teen Titans for DC Comics.
For years, Tomb of Dracula has been notoriously hard to find and even harder to collect due to its cost. Its reputation as one of Marvel's greatest comics didn't help any. So it's been a joy to see The House of Ideas finally reprint the series (and side stories related to it) in the Masterworks series.
Tomb of Dracula deserves its reputation. The storytelling is excellent--soap opera-y in the best sense with great characters, especially Dracula, who is at turns noble, vile, cowardly, and heroic. Sometimes, he acts without truly understanding why, but he is always true to his character.
And the art is fantastic. Gene Colan is a legend, and he's in top form in this series.
Marvel has been releasing a new volume every October, a real treat for the spooky season. If you love horror and great comic storytelling, this is for you.
This was never one of my favorite Marvel titles, except for the gorgeous Gene Colon artwork, because it's so predictable. The bad guy *has* to win, otherwise the series is over. So covers that promise the death of Dracula are clearly just so much hype. He can have his plans set back, of course, but he's going to be there till the series ends. Oh well, the artwork, as I said, is brilliant, so enjoy that!
