Highland Rift Pack #2

Bitten by Frost

Rate this book
Amelia's Pack sent her north as a punishment for rejecting the Alpha's son as her mate. But for the first time, she feels free. Now, she’s never going to let anyone close, not even the frustrating scientist who’s testing her patience and self-control.

For years, Mitchel has hidden his Frost magic, protecting his family’s reputation. But when he goes north to investigate why the Highland Rift Scar has shrunk, the cold is making his magic slip. Or maybe it’s just the stubborn Shifter who is assigned as his escort.

As their investigation turns into a rescue mission, Amelia gets injured, and Mitchel finds himself on the edge of losing control of his magic. To give them a chance to heal, the Alpha benches the pair, but it's not long before more trouble arises, and only the two of them are left to help.

When Mitchel has already lost control once, and Amelia can barely stand, will they be able to learn to work together? Or will this new threat tear them apart?

Filled with suspense and romance, Bitten by Frost is a thrilling paranormal romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, Buried by Earth, then you’ll be sure to love what this book has to offer.

Come for the chaos. Stay for the heart.

While cats stalk phoenixes across the breakfast table and werewolves dig up the garden to torment her chihuahua, stories are already forming—layered with myth, emotion, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

Jemma Weir is a Scottish indie author of paranormal romance and urban fantasy with bite: magic is messy, love is fierce, and family means everything. Her characters are flawed, loyal, and unforgettable—shaped by legend and stitched with sass and suspense while the Scottish wind howls outside her writing room.

Her series include Highland Rift Pack, where protective shifters, tangled loyalties, and emotional stakes collide, and Death and Visions, a gritty urban fantasy detective saga set in Edinburgh, where solving murders means confronting psychic visions, buried trauma, and ghosts that won’t let go. Her stories explore loyalty, longing, and the kind of love that claws its way through darkness. Expect Scottish mist, fractured memories, and truths that refuse to stay buried.

Fantasy was her first love. Now she writes the kind of stories she always wanted to read—gritty, heartfelt, and just a little unhinged.

Amelia and Mitchel, both drawn to each other but both hurt recently from a bad relationship and refuse to get into another. I loved how Amelia and Mitchel overcame their vulnerabilities to trust each other. As in the first book with Sam, Mitchel has a secret about his magic that if exposed could hurt his family. Because of this, he has never trained in his magic and can’t control it. Should he use it to save his friends or continue to keep his abilities hidden? The choice is made when Oliver and Amelia get into trouble in the rift and Mitchel has to reveal his magic to save them. It wasn’t plain sailing for Amelia and Mitchel, especially with the arrival of both their exes causing trouble for them along with scientists to study the rift.
We do get some scenes that include Sam and Hale, especially with the ongoing politics between the Prime Alphas. Can’t wait for Oliver’s story and the fact that Luna, Amelia’s wolf, is desperate to help him find his mate. 😂

Book 2 of the Highland Rift Scar was just as good as Book 1, Buried By Earth. Please note that you will need to read book 1 as it’s an introduction to the characters, the area they live in and what they are dealing with. It was a fast read, but only because I didn’t want to put it down! The story reminds us that we all have “baggage” that time can’t seem to erase. It’s a must read for the true friendships, the love connections, the characters you instantly dislike and the danger you are immersed in.

OOO! This story is a excellent one. I laughed a lot when Amelia and Luna (her wolf) had things to say to the other. It was funny. I loved the wolf's attitude. A lot more action and danger in this story than the first one. I enjoyed it very much. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Mitchel was in the north because in over a hundred years the Rift had been steady. Then the report came in that it had shrunk. He's there with a few others to find out why. His friend Oliver is there to meet him. He's a shifter ranger guarding the rift. He's on edge cause most of the scientists coming seem to be shifters. Shifters don't take kindly to other shifters coming onto their territory.
Amelia was sent North because she attacked the alpha's son when he tried to get her to mate with him. She got angry with his antics and turned the lust he was trying to force on her into anger. She's made a place here for herself and her wolf.
Now Mitchel and Amelia are meeting. There is a jolt when they shake hands. The downside to being there, Mitchel's ex is there and there's no doubt she's there to cause trouble. Amelia is facing similiar with the alpha's son who is in the group there for the rift. Emotions on their part are running on high. Now the meeting of scientists has started and it's discovered that Mitchel wasn't suppose to make it up North. But the alpha's son who was an instigator who sent Amelia North is and he isn't a scientist. Amelia is fighting the mating call to Mitchel because she won't be boxed in again. Now she, Mitchel and Oliver on the way to the edge of the rift to take measurements. On the way to the rift a car goes off the road. So they stop to go help. Unfortunately one of the women is not alive but the other is. Amelia is stung by the scorpion from the rift. When they get back to base, Mitchel and Amelia are taken to the infirmary. Then when released they go home. After a dream of the two of them, Dylan shows up to try to convince her she's his. But she now knows who she wants. Dylan and Mitchel's ex are here and it's not to help. More like cause trouble. Will Amelia get her head straight before she loses everything?
A fantastic story but just talking about the snow and ice will get the reader chilly but so into the story!!.

Action and romance on a paranormal level!

Bitten by Frost is the second title in the Highland Rift Pack series. The series is set in a world about a century after the humans won the Fae War. During this battle the earth was ripped apart and today deadly creatures still escape from the scars left by these dark and deadly rifts. Bitten by Frost picks up where the previous book, Buried by Earth, left off. The long dead land around the Highland Rift Scar has started to show signs of life which the powers that be want investigating.
Amongst the scientists who travel north to look into these changes is Mitchel, an Elemantal whose best friend, Oliver, is a ranger at the Highland Rift Scar. Mitchel has spent his life hiding his frost magic but the snowy north of Scotland make it harder especially when faced with dangers and challenges that nothing has prepared him for. When he meets Oliver’s friend, and fellow ranger, Amelia, Mitchel feels an instant attraction to her and the feeling appears to be mutual. Both still carry anger and mistrust from previous relationships and neither wants to explore the connection between them. When both Amelia’s ex-boyfriend and Mitchel’s ex-girlfriend arrive with the main group of scientist trouble soon follows. Elsewhere bigger dangers are stirring that threaten the safety of the whole community and the stability of Amelia’s ranger pack.
Bitten by Frost is a well written, action packed romance with relatable characters, despite the fantasy world setting. The tension and attraction between Mitchel and Amelia is almost tangible and encourages the reader to want them to be together despite the many obstacles in their path. The narrative is easy to read and flows well. I’d have preferred a slightly stronger ending but I would definitely recommend Bitten by Frost and look forward to reading future titles by Jemma Weir.

Survival is Getting Difficult . . .

This story line takes us into the adventures to be experienced by wolf shifter Amelia and scientist Mitchel who will end up together in the North to investigate the unusual fact that the Highland Rift Scar, which previously hadn’t changed for the past 100 years, is suddenly shrinking. Two weeks previously, a report was submitted that new grass was growing where the Rift Scar had been and they needed to know what was going on. Mitchel, a secret Frost Elemental, is there as a scientist and is attempting to keep his secret hidden to protect his family. Amelia is there because she had rejected the Alpha’s son, for very valid reasons, and her refusal was punished by being sent North, tasked with escorting the scientist. Despite Amelia and Mitchel being drawn to each other, neither wants to act on it, preferring not to get too close to anyone for their own private reasons. When Amelia sustains a seriously injured leg from a scorpion and Mitchel is having trouble controlling his magic, will they be able to work together against the latest threat? There is plenty of action and suspense in this fast-paced story, and many characters to meet. Will Amelia and Mitchel finally accept each other as mates if they can get through this alive?

❄️Hunt better when slow. But too slow and lose prey
Real rating: 4.5/5

I don't know why it didn't cross my mind in the first book but in this one I gained a huge love for the wolves, especially for Amelia's Luna after this one:
Amelia: You don't know anything about him, he could be a serial killer, for all you know.
Luna: Not killer of cereal. Cereal already dead.

The only downside for me was Mitchel's ex... I understand the need for her to be like that but sadly it was just too much for my brain to process. Also at one point, it was a little hard for me to continue reading the book so I skipped a few chapters but I'm guessing it was mainly because I just love Sam too much so wanted to see her asap 😅 (after that I returned to reading to the part I skipped and continued but still did lose a half star from me)

The very last chapters did leave me very delighted which I wasn't waiting for so thank you for this book! Let's see what the next one will bring to this world with Oliver and Staci!

This is a continuation of the Highland Rift Scar and the pack that protects the surrounding areas. It is also about conspiracies from the outside. The pack is lead by Hale. His mate is Olivia . Her secret is guarded from the world. This is the place where others from various packs are sent by their Alphas as punishment. Oliver is there because he made a choice to protect his friend, Mitchell. Mitchell has his own secret that Oliver has protected as well. Amelia is there because she attacked an Alphas son. This also the love story about mates in the pack . There are so many secrets that come into play in this storyline. Hale makes a decision about the future of his pack that will change everything. It is really a good story from the start to the end. It is a combination of fantasy such as wolf shifters, people of the elements or elementals and humans coming together in the community. The creators are scary that the fight to keep from leaving the rift scar. This can be read as a standalone book but it made much more sense to me since I have read the first book in the series.

Amelia beat up the alpha’s son who wouldn’t take no as an answer her and her wolf didn’t want him so she was sent away after training went to help patrol the Rift Scar. Mitchel thought that he had gotten his water element powers one night instead was told that his element power was frost not water and the man that raised him wasn’t his father. But couldn’t tell anyone had to act like his water power was weak so his mother could keep her status in the community. When a research team was being sent to the rift he asked his father for help in getting on the team was sent a different ticket to make him late and get caught in the snowstorm but he took an earlier train. When he saw Amelia knew she was his, his best friend from college helped them save a person the scorpions tried to kill by using his frost power. Dylan the alpha’s son came after her still but that was a bust for him. They were offered a place in the pack and to live there. Good book!.

BITTEN BY FROST is the second book in the Highland Rift Scar series and we return to Hale's pack. This time, it's Amelia's turn with Mitchel, a visiting scientist.

Oh, boy! This was a good one! Amelia and Mitchel have so much in common, and yet neither of them will talk about it. They also have very dodgy exes who also turn up at the Rift Scar for reasons of their own. Plus, add in the prime alphas and the government, and you're in for a wild ride.

I was absolutely gripped by this story and read it in one sitting as I simply couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed Sam and Hale's story and didn't think this would top it, but it did.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED but I also recommend you read it as a series as it does follow on from the first and has an overarching story arc.

This book picks up pretty much where the last one left off. Amelia is on the side characters from book 1, a werewolf. Mitchel is a Frost Mage who is hiding his powers for family reasons. This book definitely advanced the overall arc. After the events of book 1, the rift scar is changing and the baddies inside it are acting strange. The other packs in Britain and the organization that monitors the rift scars are being even stranger. There is a lot of personal trauma for Amelia and Mitchel that gets addressed in this book so it is very emotionally satisfying and their relationship was unexpected and enjoyable. I was a little irritated that I didn't get more answers about the larger arc. Book 1 showed symptoms of something big happening and book 2 confirmed it but nothing was resolved. I need to know what the heck is going on!!!!

All that said, I really liked this book and am enjoying this series. I can't wait to read book 3.

I love Mitchel, he’s a powerful Frost elemental pretending to be water elemental from Glasgow. Oliver wolf shifter is a long standing friend of Mitchel, one of the very few to know his true nature. Mitchel has come to study the Rift Scar. That night they go to pub, Mitchel meets Amelia wolf shifter, he can’t take his eyes off her. Mitchel and Amelia are delightful together, they are sent to Rift Scar with Oliver. They will find great danger, desperate battles against poisonous scorpions, deadly imps and a monstrous wyvern. Mitchel is the fated mate of Amelia and they are amazing together. There’s a mystery to solve, why are there large nests of rift monsters outside the Rift scar, dangerously close people? They have been betrayed, the safety of the area has been sabotaged, rift monsters attacking humans. This is a spellbinding, action packed and powerful story mixed with a delightful, heartwarming romance 💕. I loved every second of this wonderful adventure, I can’t wait to read the next book.

Yet another fantastic dive into the world of the Highland Rift.

One thing, I noticed more in this book than in the first one was the interactions between all the characters. Hale and Sam still have their roles to play, and it doesn't feel like it was forced, just to prove a point. And let's face it... there are so many characters I want to have their own book.

The world building is just as amazing as it was in the first book, and you really get to know what makes Amelia tick.

It was also mind-blowing to see a new 'idea' for an old concept...

Definitely ready for book three now... and four, and five, and six?

I really enjoy the world this series is set in and I feel like this book does a good job expanding on what we learned in the first book regarding the Rift Scars. I did feel that the timeframe of the story was short almost all of the events happen in less than a week. This just makes everything feel super rushed and doesn't allow for character growth. It also makes it feel like a big part of the plot is missing because everything sets up a mystery and then boom all wrapped up in a nice bow and the book is over. More Excitement and More Magic
4-5* The second book in this series follows straight after the first, with a different, secret elemental and a female wolf. The same wonderful world with all its pitfalls and a political play that is still hidden but being revealed bit by bit. Strong men and women with some nasties on the side. Very good read, recommended. Waiting for the next.
Again, there is a free novella about their early days that gives some extra back ground information.

In this volume, we learn a little more about the characters we met in the first book and about the layouts/intrigues concerning the world in which the mysterious Rifts exist.
The main focus, however, was on the new couple—Amelia and Mitchel— who feel a strong attraction to each other upon their first encounter. Their personal struggles over previous toxic relationships allowed them to better understand each other and establish a bond that goes beyond the physical.

If you thought the first book was fantastic, this book will blow your socks off!!

Luna's attitude was so hysterical she had my belly juggling from all my laughter. Amelia held her own though. Amelia meets her mate, Mitchell who just so happens to have a secret. The complete d-bag Dylan shows up and we get Sam and Hale too throughout the book.

This book is filled with so much more action, passion, danger and intrigue. It's so captivating from beginning to end that you won't want to put it down.

The next book is Oliver's and I can't wait to read that installment!

Never a dull moment.
Things are not going well in the Highland Rift Scar. A research trip was put together very fast by IRS&D to see what is going on. This team is composed of one scientist, a human, and the rest are wolves. Mitchel, a scientist and human, is sent on a later train in the hopes he won't make to the gathering because of bad weather. That plan did not work.
The local pack and the researchers find that things now involve the death of civilians,
scorpions, imps, a wyvren. Mixed in with all of that is a little romance and the formation of a new pack.

Weir has created another awesome paranormal romance. This time it's Mitchel and Amelia's story. It is filled with action-packed adventures investigating the Highland Rift Scar that ends up as a rescue mission. They work together and get to know each other in the process. If you like paranormal romance, you're going to fall in love with the characters and this series. I definitely recommend this page-turner as your next read.

The second Highland Rift Pack book is the story of shifter Amelia and Elemental Mitchel. The plot picks up almost exactly where Book 1 left off. The over arching story continues. I enjoyed reading how this fated mate couple meets and falls in love. I enjoyed the author using a variety of paranormals, not just shifters, it gives this series a uniqueness. I am anxious to read book 3.

Honestly I enjoyed the first book and enjoyed this one even more. The growth in the world was wonderful to see. And another mated pair is just exciting. I think Oliver needs to keep an eye on Luna she has plans to settle him down (poor man). Mitchel is an excellent add to the group and getting rid of the problems releases hope into the area. I’m very sure based on the first 2 books that the third will be just as easy and entertaining to read.

This was another great entry in the Highland Rift Pack series, it had everything that I enjoyed from the first book. The characters were everything that I was looking for from the previous book. It had that element that I wanted and enjoyed the overall feel of this story. Jemma Weir has a great writing style and left me wanting to read more in this series.

"Definitely not what I expected, the plot was pretty intense that had me on the edge. Lesson learned, scorpions are not to be trusted. Ice is amazing. The only reason I'm giving it 4 is because I felt romance lack very much. Half book and they pretty much never talk to each other just brief moments. I needed more love, passion and connection."

This was a great read that I didn’t want to put down. It had me being anxious, hopeful, and also happy with the romance. What I love about shifter stories is it’s not the sugary type romances. It did make want read it fully with no speed reading that I sometimes can find me skimming over pages. Definitely recommend this book.
