Another lovely read from Dilly Court, Christmas Eve and Rose finds a child asleep in the churches Nativity cradle near to death, he looks like he has been beaten and starved. The arrival of a handsome stranger brings lots of adventures to come for Rose My thanks as always to NetGalley and publishers Harper Collins Uk Harper Fiction for the early read
In the mood for historical fiction, I decided to try out an author new to me, Dilly Court, and a novel that is set in the 1850ies. What I got felt to be a mixture of Jane Austen fan fiction added with some 21st century readers' and author's needs and a heroine, that well, I didn't quite gel with, and who repeatedly made unbelievably stupid same decisions. The representation of female living conditions is due to the time period chosen very restrictive and in addition, Rose and her two sisters have grown up in a parsonage so they are very aware of the societal norms that rule their lives and the importance of preferably marrying up into a higher level of their society. At some point I lost interest in the story and the main character and her very unbelievable motivation of having got to care for this youth that showed up unexpectedly in the villages Christmas manger and just wanted to be done with this book. Everything felt mediocre, the story, the characters, the execution. The narrator I would like to say is very well chosen and her narration was very enjoyable.
Set in Dorset in the 1850’s, the story begins with Rose finding an injured young boy lying in the manger outside the vicarage. Alongside her sisters Emily and Marianne, they nurse him while trying to uncover his identity. What follows is months of kidnappings, secrets and cunning plans.
Rose is naive, brave and headstrong. Her determination to do good and help people comes with some questionable decisions and quick-thinking. Jago is wiser than his years, desperate to recover quickly and bring the bad guys to justice. Benedict is wealthy, intelligent and on a mission to clear his name. Together they need to work together to get to the bottom of things.
This book was well-written, full of action and humorous in parts. I thoroughly enjoyed Rose’s story.
Another delightful story from Dilly Court. Rose one of the main characters discovers a young boy lying in the manger of the church display he's been beaten, thin, and starving.
This is where the story unfolds. This charming book meets Dilly's wonderful standard of telling a story and keeping her readers interested.
Rose Northwood, a vicar's daughter is a formidable young lady who finds a young boy seriously ill near the vicarage where she lives and an epic tale begins. I thoroughly enjoyed this although I did feel that Rose was a bit silly at times. A brilliant tale from Dilly!
Book was absolutely fantastic. I loved how Dilly changing constantly action in this book. When you think everything settle down, then everything changing again. Fab 👌
Another fantastic book by Dilly Court. The traditional 1800’s village life and traditions is portrayed as Rose and Benedict Rivers become acquainted amid kidnapping, betrayal and love. Thanks to Dilly and her publisher.
It’s cold and snowing Rose finds a boy asleep in the nativity display, he is fast asleep with no shoes on, he would die if left where he is. Rose must save the boy and look after him and find out who he is.
Where has he come from and why is he covered in bruises?? So many questions and Rose is keen to find out!
And in the mean time a ship comes to dock in their village, is this linked to the poorly boy?
Great story by Dilly Court, enjoyable family saga with lots going on. Well worth a read!
