Falcon Club #3

Cómo casarse con un granuja

Rate this book

First 80%—5 stars

Fully realized characters, especially a very likeable heroine and a hero with a past and a problem. An engrossing plot with unfolding layers. Authentic emotion and a refreshing lack of artifice between the two main characters. I absolutely loved it.

Last 20%—1 star

“I will save you by hurting you.”
“I will save you by leaving you.”
Stupid fake highwayman ploy
The end.

Grrrrrr.

Wyn Yale has been making appearances in Ashe's books for a while now and I have been looking forward to getting to know the charming, drunk spy. I will warn you, this was not what I expected.

For those that discount the story and believe that everything was cured by love obviously haven't read it. In her Acknowledgments section, Katharine recognizes many doctors and others who prefer to remain anonymous that she spoke to about alcoholism and treatment. In this story, we see Wyn's struggle with alcoholism. We see the guilt and pain that drive him to drink. We see the horrible toll of alcohol detoxification that almost kills him. And we see the daily fight to stay clean thereafter.

Wyn's true character was very real, very damaged, and not at all what he showed to the rest of the world. To be honest, he even had me fooled.

We also meet Diantha in other stories, but she does not really stand out until now. In some respects, she is unbelievably silly. She is unfailingly optimistic and blind to the constrictions of society. This leads to situations where she finds herself in danger, compromising circumstances, and other various scrapes. However, she is also immensely kind, forgiving, and wholesome. In one instance, Wyn compares her to sunshine. And that is why their pairing works. She is light to his dark and he is practical to her dreamer. When the two are together, it is balance, peace, and contentment. It just works.

Most of this tale takes place on the road with Diantha trying to get to Calais and Wyn trying to delay her so he can get her back to her family. They are put in numerous intimate situations, they encounter various interesting people, and they steadily shed the masks they have been wearing and show their true selves to each other.

It was a grueling, but rewarding read. Wyn says some very hurtful things to Diantha to push her away and there is a time when I wonder how they will ever end up together. I probably won't read this again because it was so intense, but I am glad I read it. The themes of alcoholism, abuse, guilt, and self-loathing are all there in abundance. However, slowly the darkness gives way to laughter, joy, unexpected friendships, love, and redemption. This is why I keep reading Ashe's books. She weaves so many things together and creates a tale so riveting it feels real.

12% of the way in.

So far, Diantha is TSTL to the nth degree. I do not find über-naive and earnest heroines charming. I find them to be nincompoops. And I wonder why anyone wants to spend their time and/or money reading about their festivals of stupidity. Let's review Diantha's goal as stated so far: she wants to find her long-lost mother, who Diantha believes is running a brothel in Calais. And then have a season in London and settle down to a respectable marriage.

Yeah, because showing up at a brothel in Calais and claiming a relationship with the madame makes one such a hot commodity on the early 19th century marriage market. :rolleyes There isn't even a hint of pretense at making Diantha's motives historically accurate.

Wyn, the hero, is not much better. We are told that he is the best there ever was, etc. etc. etc. A veritable Regency 007. He's introduced as someone who doesn't drink on the job, and then proceeds to do nothing but drink. He apparently has a humdinger of an ulcer that quiets down when he eats, and then he doesn't eat. He's on an urgent mission, yet has time to dicker around with über-naive girls. I have a feeling the book will resolve with Diantha's magical lovin' curing Wyn's propensity for drink (I'm not going to call it alcoholism as that does the disease a disservice as it is depicted here.)

Supposedly Katharine Ashe is the new rising star of Regency Romance.

I...just don't get it.

This is the 4th book in the Falcon Club series and also the start of it’s own series, The Devil’s Duke. As the beginning book in a series, it is an exciting start and I’m eager to read the next one. As the 4th book in the Falcon Club series, it is confusing and frustrating as it does not offer the reader any opportunity for recall but jumps right in as if the last book in that series was published months ago instead of over three years ago. Due to this fact, I not only found myself completely lost in the first half of the book but also due to the complexity of Ashe’s writing, which if you aren’t paying attention to every paragraph, you can miss an important detail that can be referenced throughout the book. I must have done this, as I had a hard time understanding what happened between Saint and Constance six years ago and it’s mentioned briefly in the earlier part of the book and then revealed in sprinkles as the story enfolds. When I went back and re-read the first half and found myself less lost at least. There were too many themes which were not connected well, so this contributed to it being hard to follow as well.

The story has a darker element to it as well that is a bit of a surprise as readers who have been reading the Falcon Club have seen Constance as a strong and solid character and eagerly awaiting her story. I won’t spoil the storyline but it does add an edge to an already edgy story. I think Ashe treats this storyline very well, however, it makes the already complex relationship between Constance and Saint even more complex and I think this element did not need to be included in the story.

All that being said, this is a good story with a very compelling, mysterious and hot hero who just smolders off the page. He is an enigma yet his desire and love for Constance cannot be denied. He wants to protect her and others who come into his life and that makes him the perfect hero in my mind. Plus, he fences which makes him even sexier. I enjoyed the chemistry between Constance and Saint in the fencing lesson scenes.

Definitely a good read and enjoyable, just know that you should be alert when reading it and expect a darker story than that from Ashe’s earlier works. Ashe writes so beautifully and I so prefer eloquent prose over elementary. I am eager for the next in the series and reading more from one of my favorite authors.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC.

DNFed at 11%. The author can turn a phrase beautifully. But I have zero interest in silly, virginal young misses who secretly thrill dark-spirited rogues. And in fact, I hate that kind of gender role play where womanly sweetness and warmth cures masculine cold-heartedness.

Also, two crappy mothers (his is dead and hers ran away and became a brothel madam in France.) And the hero is an alcoholic who hasn’t eaten in three days.

Meh.

I gave this an A+ (my only one!) at All About Romance.

I first read How a Lady Weds a Rogue years ago and I loved it. After reading it again this past week, I think I loved it even more. The third novel in Katharine Ashe’s Falcon Club series, it features Wyn Yale, aka The Raven, whose specialty is retrieving lost girls. Charming, handsome, clever and kind, Wyn is the consummate gentleman; he’s only ever failed one of the women in his charge… but the loss has haunted him ever since. For the past five years he’s sought solace at the bottom of a bottle, but when How a Lady Weds a Rogue opens, Wyn has a new sense of purpose. Revenge. Tasked by the Falcon Club with retrieving and returning Lady Priscilla, a prized horse, to the same evil duke who murdered the girl Wyn was sworn to protect, Wyn vows to kill him and face the consequences. But his plans go awry when, shortly after he recovers Lady Priscilla, he finds himself traveling on the Mail Coach with Lady Diantha Lucas, who’s embarked on a life-altering mission of her own.

Lady Diantha Lucas is in need of a hero when she spots Wyn Yale asleep in the crowded Mail Coach. Days into their journey, her maid, Annie, absconded with a local farm boy, and Diantha is wary of the man in the corner of the coach leering at her. Trying and failing to come up with a new travel plan, she decides she needs a hero. If she can find such a man to escort and accompany her on a quest to locate her absent mother in Calais, she can still complete the journey and return home with her family none the wiser. Canvassing the other men in the coach – pointedly ignoring the man staring at her from the corner, she notices a gentleman in a top hat napping on the bench across from her. Bending closer to see his face, she’s convinced her prayers have been answered. It’s Wyn Yale, who rescued her once long ago. When the Mail Coach next stops, she approaches him and asks for help.

Unfortunately for Diantha, Wyn has no desire to accompany her to Calais, or return her to the mother who abandoned her family three years ago under a cloud of rumor and scandal.

Unfortunately for Wyn, Diantha is determined to go to Calais – with or without him.

Unfortunately for both of them, nothing about the journey – she thinks they’re going to Calais, he’s secretly trying (albeit by a circuitous route) to return her home – goes according to plan.

I don’t want to dwell on or spoil Ms. Ashe’s take on the traditional road trip trope except to say this trip is alternately hilarious and heartbreaking. The author masterfully juxtaposes it against the developing romance between Wyn and Diantha and several other completing plotlines: Wyn’s association with the Falcon Club, two potentially villainous men following them, and the reasons each has for undertaking the road trip that finds them meeting on the Mail Coach. What elevates HALWAR from other similarly good road trip romances (including the two Falcon Club novels that precede it) is the personal journey Diantha and Wyn undertake that unfolds in parallel with their literal journey. Ms. Ashe introduces two outwardly charming, funny, kind and good individuals, peels back their layers to reveal their deepest, darkest secrets, and then magnificently renders a moving and redemptive love story. Her characterization of these two principal characters is absolutely marvelous.

When Wyn’s travels intersect with Diantha’s, he’s barely keeping his alcohol addiction at bay. Handsome, charming, and strictly committed to his personal set of “Rules a Man is Well Advised to Follow in Order to Be a True Gentleman,” Wyn is something of a chameleon – always able to do and say the right thing. But his failure to save a girl in his care destroyed his fragile equilibrium. His murderous plan for revenge is the only thing that gives him purpose – until he meets Diantha. Ms. Ashe brilliantly depicts his struggles with alcohol addiction, never shying away from the reality of his craving or the effect of his drinking on his life and the lives of those around him. It’s a moving and harrowing characterization, and it’s difficult to witness his struggles to cope, detox and ultimately overcome his addiction. The promise of Diantha – her love, her affection, her peace – is a solace when Wyn is in his darkest place, striving to be worthy of her love. Oh it’s lovely and moving and wonderful to witness. Ms. Ashe doesn’t pull any punches, and her pacing in this section of the novel is superb.

Although Wyn is attracted to Diantha almost from the moment they meet on the coach, I wasn’t as quickly enamored of her. She’s initially portrayed as a slightly silly, self-deprecating, kind to a fault saint of sorts, but as their journey – literally and figuratively – progresses, I also fell under her spell. A pimply, awkward, and plump teenager bullied by her peers and verbally abused by her mother, Diantha somehow emerged with an innate goodness and beauty that ensures all who meet her love her – including Wyn. She’s curious and resourceful, honest and determined, passionate – and frequently cursed with self-doubt. She’s hidden her insecurities behind a charming and happy façade, but she aches to find love and companionship. Curious, determined and overwhelmingly attracted to Wyn, Diantha never gives up on him, even when he’s nearly given up on himself.

Although the best parts of this novel feature Wyn and Diantha, there’s quite a bit of other ‘stuff’ going on, too. We learn more details about the secret Falcon Club and its members, and the author teases us with letters between Lady Justice and Peregrine. We also meet the enigmatic Mr. Eads – is he a good guy or a bad guy? And why is he following Wyn? It’s a lot – but it all works. Friends, this is not your standard road trip romance. It’s so much more. And it’s all great.

THIS is the gold standard in happily ever afters: Romantic. Passionate. Funny. Sad. Tender. Heartbreaking. Hopeful. Frustrating. Special. Featuring two of my favorite principal characters, Wyn Yale and Diantha Lucas, How a Lady Weds a Rogue will engage and engross you from start to finish.

Place(s) Traveled to: Shropshire, England // Shewsbury, England // London, England // Knighton, Wales (1820)

First Line: Fellow subjects of Britain, Scandal!

So I don't normally read books out of order when I know that they are part of a series and yet this seems to be something doing a bit more of when it comes to romances. Though a big difference with romance series and non-romance series is that romance series books tend to be more companion novels. Therefore, its a little easier to read out of order as the overall plot doesn't depend on knowing what happened in the previous books. Even knowing all that though I do still like to read books in the order written. Looking at Katharine Ashe's books they are all connected in some way so I really should have started with her debut and then worked my way up to How a Lady Weds a Rogue but I didn't. Because when I asked a fellow blogger and twitter friend for the romances she enjoyed most recently How a Lady Weds a Rogue was in the top portion of that list. Since this friend is a big romance reader I knew I could trust her opinion and so dove right in.

One way to describe How a Lady Weds a Rogue is to call it a road trip novel...19th century style. And we all know just how much I adore road trip books and it doesn't matter if they involve horse and carriages and not cars on the open highway. This book was no exception. Especially since it was filled with a smart, sassy heroine and the poor man who crossed her path and was enlisted to her aid. As is typical in most historical romances our hero, Wyn Yale, was not looking for love and would really do everything to avoid it but he just didn't plan on feisty Diantha Lucas getting under his skin. Oh how I loved watching him fall. It wasn't as gleeful as some historical romances that I've read but it was still fun to watch.

Wyn and Diantha's relationship progressed in a very real and believe fashion and it wasn't without its ups and downs. Both characters are extremely stubborn and filled with determination that only they know what is best for those around them. If they just communicated some of there thoughts a bit more then there wouldn't have been as much angst. But then there also wouldn't have been as much fun for the reader either. Its a catch 22 situation. Its a romance book cliche really but oh how I do love this formula sometimes. How a Lady Weds a Rogue was a delightful read and I finished it in no time at all. It was quickly paced and well plotted and it made my heart ache throughout the story. Especially at the end where there were some really romantic lines said by Wyn and just some of his actions in general. He was a broken character like so many in romance books and I just love when they find that one special someone to help them heal.

How a Lady Weds a Rogue is the first book that I've read by Katharine Ashe and now I am eager to go and read the other books that she's written. Her characters are strong and well developed and they all feel like real people. I loved seeing that characters from her previous book all make appearances in this one and I can't wait to read how they found their HEA's. How a Lady Weds a Rogue is one of those books that I know that I will be re-reading during those times when I am sick or in a reading slump. This is how hard I fell for the world and characters that Ashe has created. I'm glad that I read this story and I don't even mind too much that I didn't read the other books in the series first. Though that is something that I am going to correct as soon as I possibly can. I think it will be fun to see Wyn and Diantha again knowing what I know now in how their story ends up.

Miss Diantha Lucas has set upon a quest to find the mother that abandoned her when she was a child, she has two weeks to get to France before her family realise she has gone and come after her. However, it soon becomes apparent on the road that she needs a hero, someone to protect her from untoward advances and to guide her safely on her journey and when she recognises Mr Wyn Yale, she knows she has found her hero. But Wyn is no ones hero, drowning his guilt over a past deed in drink, when he sees the much changed and beautiful Diantha, he has some rather ungentlemanly and unheroic feelings indeed...

I admit after the rather lacklustre opinion I had of How to be a Proper Lady I wasn't really that eager to start this book. Boy, was I wrong, if I had known how much I was going to enjoy this book I would have dived right in the second after I had finished the previous book!

The main this I loved about this book was the heroine, Diantha Lucas, there are two main reasons for this:

1. She was charming. Funny, spirited and very direct, I immediately fell under her spell. Ms Ashe seems to excel at writing really likable heroines, giving them great inner strength and vivacious personalities, it is hardly surprising the heroes fall in love with them.

2. She has been through an ugly duckling transformation, going from an over weight, spotty teen to a beautiful young lady BUT rather then her suddenly having a perfect body with nipple pointing to the ceiling and smooth unmarked skin, she instead still held a normal woman's body, stretch marks and all. It may seem a little shallow to like her more for this reason but I did, it made her more relatable, and although she may have had a few faint scars from her spots and stretch marks like a normal woman, that don't make her any less beautiful.

But what is a great heroine without her hero? I really liked Wyn, I wasn't sure what I expected from him, as although he has popped up in previous books he still remains rather mysterious. He won me over though, beneath his dashing and gentlemanly exterior and underneath the constant alcohol he drowned himself with he had a tortured past and what girl can resist that?

The mixture of two fantastic characters, a bucketful of wit and humour as well as some self discovery and a little anguish created a fabulous read and I can't wait to read the next one in the series

Ashe has given readers two completely engaging characters in Diantha and Wyn. Most readers will recognize that the innocent beauty with a kind heart, and an underappreciated intelligence whose naïveté adds to her charm as a romance heroine who perhaps made her first appearance in novels by Georgette Heyer. Diantha is a delightful example, true to type and yet appealing as an individual. Despite some grim elements in her history, she possesses a contagious joy that lightens Wyn’s darkness and touches the reader. The silver-eyed Wyn with his formidable intelligence is a tortured hero par excellence, and his Welsh background is a bonus. My favorite part of the book was the time they spent in Wyn’s home in Wales.

For all its lightness (and there are some deliciously humorous moments), the story deals with substantive issues such as alcoholism, the nature of heroism, and the self-sacrificial element in love.

How a Lady Weds a Rogue can be read as a standalone. Readers new to Ashe should have no difficulty following Diantha and Wyn’s story, but fans of the series will be pleased to see characters from earlier books make brief appearances. The continued exchange of letters between Lady Justice and Peregrine is almost interesting enough to distract one from the main plot, and Lady Constance grows more intriguing in this book. I’m eager to see where Ashe goes next with this series.

Sexy Rogue, December 5, 2012
This review is from: How a Lady Weds a Rogue: A Falcon Club Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
When reading How a Lady Weds a Rogue, I was astonished with the witty and seductive writing by the author. She has done it again with her Falcon Club series. I like reading about fellow club members who have made love matches. Now it's Wyn Yale's turn and he doesn't disappoint. I remember him from the recent books and was so glad to read about him again. Wyn has been a secret agent of the crown for many years and has done very bad things in doing his job. Even though others have tried to him help, he refuses to let his guard down. His only comfort is drinking to numb the pain that he wakes up to everyday. Wyn is a gentleman in all ways in dealing with the opposite sex. He will do any and all to protect the weak who can't. Then one day Wyn is tempted in his duty by a pretty face with dimples.
Lady Diantha Lucas is traveling by mail coach with no chaperone. She's going to see her estranged Mother who lives out on the continent. She wants to face her parent and find out why she left her family. Diantha is determined that no one will distract her from her goal. Until she is rescued by one handsome man who has eyes of silver and body of apollo. Wyn and Diantha have an instant attraction and can't keep their hands off each other. How can a hardened spy and a country miss come together when things like secrets might tear their love apart.

There were some issues that came up in this book more prominently than in the others—namely, the issue of consent. There is also the ongoing theme that a man can’t stop himself past a certain point during sex, which is a myth that is commonly used in romances, and is troubling to me.

Wyn is a complicated character. Not that the main characters in all the books aren’t. Diantha is a complicated character and certainly his match. The scene after the dungeon near the end of the book disturbed me, however. I think it brought up issues of consent and the fact that regardless of her actions (and she did push him away) Wyn didn’t listen to Diantha when she asked him to stop. So he was angry she was there. That wasn’t a good reason. There’s never a good reason. I almost dropped my rating to three stars solely for that.

Part of the reason is because it seemed out of character for Wyn. He just realizes what he wants with his life so he just takes it? It just doesn’t really fit. Yes, he’s always been in control so he might lose it at some point, but like that?

I do like that his alcoholism was addressed more fully and that he decided to quit—also that in the end notes the author mentions that quitting is dangerous and should be done under the supervision of a doctor, and what Wyn experiences was mild.

I suppose I was especially frustrated that Wyn exhibited the behaviors that he abhorred in others.

After consideration, I am dropping it to three stars. I should probably give it less considering how much time I spent thinking about those issues in the book and the fact that authors do have responsibility when they are writing not to perpetuate bad behavior. A lot of readers gloss over things like that, but it still enters their subconscious. Readers sometimes aren’t even phased by objectionable content and give books five stars without having even thought about the wrongness of a scene, and that’s not right either. I’m sort of calling out all books in which that happens here, not just this one—I was just really disappointed here.

If romance wants to be treated as a serious genre and not some embarrassing fiction that people don’t admit to reading, it needs to hold itself to the same standards as other literary fiction in some senses. The genre doesn’t give certain behaviors a free pass simply because “it’s okay for the genre.” At that point, the writing needs to rise above that.

I’m not saying that bad things don’t happen and should be ignored. If there’s a reason for them to be there, fine. I didn’t feel there was a reason for these to be there.

**Additional addendum. I was a little surprised, when looking over the reviews, how many people really disliked Diantha. Just a comment on that. All heroines do not need to be feisty, use a knife, or climb rigging. Diantha is just who she is—she genuinely likes and is interested in people. She wants to help them. She does have her plans and her schemes, and is very naive at the beginning of the book, but she tends to help people without ulterior motive (or because she might be in love with them) because she tries to see the best in people. There really are people like that out there, and they are likely to go unnoticed because they tend to do those things because they don’t scream out, “Look at me and what I am doing to be a good person!”

Incidentally, a dianthus is a very stubborn plant, also known as a pink, with not very showy foliage, that can exist in some not very hospitable conditions. The flowers, however, are beautiful.

Neste terceiro livro,da série Clube Falcon. Vamos conhecer a história, trajetória e o desfecho, desses personagens tão únicos e especiais.

Heroine too stupid, too manic pixie dream girl, except imperfect because she’s not skinny and has acne scars, but then also has EXCESSIVE self confidence and NO insecurity to the point of sexually harassing the male protagonist repeatedly. She’s praised for always thinking of others/collecting strays, but she never cares or even wonders about what he wants. Not even in a self-centered way of wanting him to want her! She only wants to kiss/be kissed by him!!! What if he ***wasn’t*** secretly attracted to her?!? What would it take or have taken for her to learn that (even if she was gorgeous and practically perfect in every way) sometimes People Don’t Want You and that No Means No.

My only objection to the male MC is the unfathomable nature of his attraction to this predatory, spoiled, overgrown child.

Always knew I’d love this book, have always enjoyed the character of the H, and the h had been interesting in the prior book. They did not disappoint. He is a very damaged man, with a sad childhood and a tragic incident in his professional career, she’s been hurt by her own mother, and has self esteem issues. Together they’re both better people and passion is inevitable. It was somewhat painful getting to the happy ending, but well worth the journey. I’m still not overfond of the entire Falcons Club theme, but I do like all the main characters, initially the first book was overwhelming in it’s many characters and it was difficult to keep straight.

A narrativa é leve e fluída.

I think this was my favorite in the series (so far).

I love that the characters aren't perfect. Both Wyn and Diantha have very real, very relatable issues. I was drawn into their relationship and loved every aspect of the story. It is funny and filled with emotion that pulled me in and held me until the very end.
