When Liri's husband disappears shortly after she gives birth to their first child, she risks everything to find him. Strapping her newborn to her chest, she ventures into the Demon Wood armed only with a handful of magic spells she hasn't been trained to use and a determination to bring her family back together.
There are not many books that I will skip dinner for, but this is one of them. Liri gripped me from the beginning, and I needed to know if she would find her husband. So much so, that I told my family (more than once) to go on without me. Besides the gripping story, I love the archeological elements, and especially Liri's battle with post-partum depression. That is not the main point of the book. It's just something woven throughout. It was wonderful to watch her come to grips with it and to fight other demons as well. All around, a book teens and adults will love.
Mika's story telling is captivating and beautiful. While I longed for more world building at the beginning to set the stage and help me understand some of the folklore of magic and demons, the writing style and depth of emotion was enough to keep me reading. I usually have several books going at once and this was definitely my "go to book" this week.
From beginning to end this book was captivating! There are no dull moments. It is a book filled with love, adventure, despair, hope, and perseverance. Liri is brave, faithful, woman that will stop at nothing to get her stolen husband back. I can’t wait to read more of Myka’s books!
