Published by pseudonym Jan Pfloog in 1963, “Animals On The Farm” is one of my childhood's ‘Little Golden Books’. As simple and short as every page's descriptions are, it is thoroughly educational. I did not know the word “poult”, identifying an infant turkey. I knew “ewe” but had not hitherto been clear on whether or not it was a synonym for sheep, or differing type. I have gleaned that “ewe” is a lady sheep and “ram” is a male . I know lambs are their infants. Only equestrians know the myriad of words for horses but I know “mare” is the lady and “colt” is her youngster. I don't know if “foal” is interchangeable, or if it it signifies a newborn “colt”.

It is easy to see that any of us at any stage, can hone and solidify our seldom used vocabulary. The beautiful portrayals of every page anchor the simple facts and terminology that are described, by depicting a little of what these animals naturally do and how they and their young look. Most impressive is the natural drawing and colouring of these animals, right to the movement of their tails and other body parts. The cats, kittens, cows, calves, turkeys, poults, ewes, lambs, mares, and colts are true to life.

Someone who draws and shows movements well enough for all of these natural details to be recognizable at once, is highly talented and knows animals very well too. I have heard of artists studying photos or scientific models. The bright vibrancy and love expressed through the eyes and stances of all these animals had to have been observed in life. Their demeanour and energy greets us through many pages and makes us smile, at their antics and grace. A vibrant five stars: this is very peaceful to read!
