Sunflowers by Sujata Parashar is the book of incredible journeys of Epic Women Artists from India. In this book, author has introduced us to twelve women artists of changing India. The book also highlights how the artists have excelled at their artistic endeavours, made it financially viable but also celebrated art as a profession that impacts and inspires. All of them represent different field of art in which they have made a name for themselves. This book is not only about art but also about the artists as individuals, believers, leaders and path breakers. It talks about their childhood, their dreams and aspirations in their youth, the hurdles they faced, their achievements and how they're impacting people and the planet through their work. I really loved the title of the book. Also the way author has divided the individual stories of the featured artists into three different parts, named according to the different stages of growth of a sunflower; Star Bud(Childhood), Ray Floret (Youth) and Full Bloom(Name and Fame). All of the stories are really inspiring but one of the story which inspired me the most is of Nida Mahmood. She is hailed as the "Queen of Kitsch" by the Indian media. She is a self taught artist and a trained designer from NIFT. Awarded 'Most creative Design Collection' award in 2002, she continued with trail blazing concepts through 10 plus years of fashion. She believes that clothes speak a language and they have the capability of delivering sophistication, humor, style and irony and that is why she is determined to bring her art-inspired whimsical ideas to the forefront and marry them off with old fashions designs to create the perfect blended fashion. Overall, it's an excellent book which will not let you down till the end!

Art and art forms are reflections of countries' elegance and hereditament. It’s a fact that we all should agree many of those forms are vanishing from the respective region/locality for ample reasons and one of those is the lack of torchbearers who can hand over to the future generations and lack of prospects to continue the legacy.

Artists follow an unconventional path. They're also fewer in number in society. So it's exciting to learn the BTS of their processes, be it an Odissi dancer whose family established the prestigious Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, or an object theatre artist (you may wonder, what even is it?), a straight-A student turned Bollywood scriptwriter (P.S. You might've seen and enjoyed a few of her recent movies), a singer who left home to continue the gurukul parampara, a journalist turned stand-up comedian, a madhubani painter, and a fashion designer.
A few commonalities exist in the lives of these women. One is that either they stayed with their partners for life or broke up immediately. Secondly, their parents or support system have always encouraged them to follow their calling. Third, they are all extremely well accomplished in the field of education, shattering the myth that only "dumb" kids take up art.
I'm fortunate to have learned about so many wonderful ladies through this book, and I'm walking away with renewed inspiration and appreciation for artists. The author has done a great job of condensing varied life stories into succinct chapters.
