Was overall a good book. Enjoying that it was about knitting and didn't just have knitting as a background thought. The second half is were the story really picks up.
I did find dialogue between characters to be a little stiff, like they were just meeting for the first time instead of being family members.

This was a quick and enjoyable read! I’m a fiber artist & this is a book that was chosen for a fiber artist book club.

THE GOOD:
Being a fiber artist myself, I love the detail about knitting and crochet in this book! I laughed out loud about the second sock syndrome & I could very much relate to the characters through fiber art. The author did a great job conveying the coziness of yarn shops and the camaraderie of the fiber art community, too.

The plot is very unique! I was intrigued by the story and how a few plot lines intersected. I loved the connection to the main character’s own family, too.

I appreciate the diversity! The book talks about African & Caribbean cultures, which are not my own, so it was interesting to learn about.

THE COULD-BE-BETTER:
My main issue with this book is that there are a lot of spelling and grammar errors, so much so that it was distracting and took me out of the story. I often had to pause and re-read to make sure I wasn’t missing something.

I noticed a few times that quotations would either not be added, or they would be at one end or the other, and so I didn’t know if it was a thought or who was talking. One of the character’s names were spelled completely different, just pages from each other, and I had to go back and look. When talking about Bessie, she says late 1900s, which I would think is meant to be late 1800s, since everything is supposed to be very old.

This seems to be her first fiction book and self published, so I think some extra editing would make a big difference in the flow of reading.

Something else that I think just comes with time is showing instead of telling. The author uses beautiful words, but it’s said in a matter-of-fact way. I would prefer the sentiment to be shown through the storytelling. I think that’s just a skill that is acquired with practice.

I think this book could have been a little longer, and it could have tied up more loose ends. I am overall satisfied with the ending, but I still have some lingering questions. It did end with a cliffhanger though, which teases another book! That’s exciting!

Tian, keep writing! I can see a lot of potential in this book. I’m excited for you to continue to shed light on underrepresented people and also the fiber art community.

I had such high hopes for this book, but I struggled so hard with it. The author described the story rather than let the reader make discoveries or even see any of the action.

In the most interesting part of the book, the author writes "Mrs Anderson painted a vivid picture of Bessie's knitting circle", but then we as readers didn't get to read any details about the knitting circle that was anything close to a "vivid picture".

The romance between the characters was forced and unbelievable..the only basis for the relationship was that they were spending time together.

I probably should've DNF'ed

As a crochetter of over 2 decades, I desperately wanted to like this book. I wanted to enjoy it so badly but it was just so badly written. I could tell the author cared but the purple prose and unnatural dialogue made the book a painful read. If it had been cleaned up, the novella would have been a fantastic 40 page short story. It's a good example of when an author tells, instead of showing and it was done with EVERYTHING! We, the audience, weren't allowed for a second to just see the story play out.

Fantastic concept, bad execution.

The characters and story are intriguing. I try to imbue my crocheting with love for whoever might receive a piece, so it wasn’t hard to imagine magic in knitting. Structurally the writing is a little uneven, but I was so wrapped up in what was happening I lost sight of the writing structure issues. It’s a lovely book!

A Crafty cozy mystery story. Fast paste and just enough adventure to keep you turning the page. Love it.
