The Captain and his Thief: A scarred-by-love meets commitment-phobe MM romance

Rate this book
Your enemy's enemy is your friend...Pirate Hakan's crew was scattered when they were all sold into slavery a year ago. Now, he'll do whatever it takes to reunite them. Steal a boat? That's nothing! Persuade its furious captain to help him? That's harder - until he discovers Ramorran's sworn enemy is also the man imprisoning Hakan's crew.

Never trust a pirate...Ramorran abandoned his family for the man he loved, only to be betrayed. Now, he can't return home without what his deceitful pirate lover stole. Hakan's offer to help is tempting - as is the man himself. But Ramorran is determined never to fall for a pirate again. He'll stick with Hakan until they've taken revenge and not a minute longer.

They're stronger together...Vengeance drives them both like an ocean current, but as enemies multiply, friends show their true colours, and secrets threaten to spill like a hold holed in battle, Hakan and Ramorran will need to trust each other to succeed.

And are they both so focused on past hurts that they’re missing out on something far more precious right in front of them?

a bi pirate who doesn't know a good thing when he sees it, a gay sailor with secrets who recognises a good thing but doesn't dare hope for it, inappropriate dice games, and an only-one-hammock situation.

Pirate Hakan has finally been released and knows the first thing he must do is recover his crew. They were sold into slavery one year ago and he will do whatever he takes to free them. First, he must find a boat and the one he finds he takes only to find its owner objects. Ramorran, the owner, fell in love with a pirate only to lose everything. He is not inclined to help another pirate but it turns out the two are headed to the same location. Both want to collect lost items. Ramorran wants a personal item stolen from while Hakan wants his crew back. Along the way, the two discover a mutual attraction, but neither one trusts that affection.

So much happens to these two. They are betrayed by more than one person. Secrets come out as well as friends and enemies. Hakan and Ramorran had a lot of chemistry together but were too caught up in the past to realize what they had. This book is populated by an amazing group of individuals. They can be snarky, sarcastic and quite sneaky. But they are family and family takes care of each other. The Captain and His Thief is set in the same world as The Prince’s Soulmate. There is more to come and we can be sure that there will be excellent reading ahead.

This is the first time I’ve read anything by Katy Haye. As a whole I adored this story. The beginning was really slow and it was hinted, and I mean hinted like there’s a fly on the wall. I would have taken a little more.

The story starts off with Hakan being set free from enslavement, and trying to find his way off the sultan’s land. He hears of an opportunity in the form of Ramorran’s small ship. What Hakan did not expect to happen was Ramorran to catch up with him by swimming to the boat. This lead to both of having a shaky alliance until the both get what they wanted. Both of them are building sexual tension until it becomes unbearable that ‘they must embrace.’ Personally,(nothing against the author’s method) I really would have loved more build up in the relationship and more banter between the two in the beginning. As they continue their journey they both make discoveries along the way. It eventually leads to them finding both love and family in one another.

Overall, the story was wonderful. I’m really looking forward to the next installment. Those two are going to be quite adorable.

*This book was given to me for free, but this is my own opinion.*
Can a pirate and a man who hates pirates have a relationship?
The beginning part of this book was awesome. The characters had wants, needs, and goals, which made them relatable. When you first start reading, you'll notice the flawless weaving of the plot throughout the story.
The main issue I had was at the "end". Stick around and I'll explain. There was a flawless plot and subplot, and I would think they'd end together, but no. The "end" marks the end of the plot, with a chunk of the book left to go.
The "end" disappointed me because the villain was reported to be eccentric, but not "deranged". I thought he was capable of more of a fight. And when presented with an opportunity to kill the main characters, he doesn't do it. And once the villain was gone, anticlimacticly, the stakes were gone.
Instead, the end is good, but it was like reading two short stories with the same characters.
Despite that, I loved this book. I had high hopes. If you like romance in the open seas, this one is for you.

Ramorran was searching for his most prized possession when he encountered a slippery, intriguing man. Hakan, pirate by trade, and a thief by nature, which had led him to steal Ramorran’s boat in his quest to find his enslaved friends and crew members. It’s a good plan, but he gets a bit sidetracked when he sets out to steal Ramorran’s heart, (he is a pirate after all).

This story is set in The Prince’s Soulmate universe. Hakan was engaging in those books and he is even more so with his very own story. I liked seeing him fall in love (even if it was very fast). I hadn’t seen him as vulnerable but he was in this book. I enjoyed the interactions with his crew mates. The bad guy was a disappointment though. I think his character just didn’t get enough page time.

I enjoyed the story even though it did seemed underdeveloped in places. I liked the supernatural aspect of this book. The author creates intriguing characters and I’m looking forward to Ozzo’s book next.

I received an arc of this book.

The story was really good

This story did not go where I thought it'd lead. I enjoyed the characters so much. Hakan is fun. Reminds me of a Capt Jack Sparrow, turns to acting to get out of danger. Rammoran was betrayed by someone he loved so I can see him hesitating to involve himself with Hakan.

The storyline didnt go where I thought it would and it was surprising and really entertaining. I just had a couple of issues with blanks where it would have helped to have more explanation. Maybe a flashback between Rammoran and Sixblades. Also maybe a bit more in the "great minds think alike" part. I feel that Sixblades part in the story was smaller than I thought he'd be.

All in all I really did enjoy the story I just think there might have been a better way to make it flow in some parts.

I felt like I was missing something at the beginning of this story. It seemed to be the middle of a story not the beginning. The writing was solid and the storyline had merit but I was lost. Is this part of a series or were we just supposed to go with it?? The relationship was a lot of fighting then suddenly in love and they both had communication issues galore. I think if I had some of the details of both of their previous circumstances I would have enjoyed this a lot more. Overall I was just lost..

Old wives tales expanded

This is the first book by Katy Haye that I have read but I will definitely be looking out for more if this book is anything to go by. Combining pirates with the old wives tales about selkies she has come up with a delightful story that I really enjoyed. Despite the adventures this tale takes these two males on I found the book fairly low angst and medium/low heat. The only negative thing that I could say is that it could use a bit more humor. There are some definite hints about future stories that sound interesting.

This story shares a world with The Prince’s Soulmate series, and weaves together some intriguing world building and interesting characters— a pirate, a man with very good reasons *not* to trust pirates, a strong connection, some exigent circumstances, a plot with plenty of potential that (mostly) comes to fruition in rewarding ways— there’s lots to appreciate here.

Hakan and Ramorran are looking for revenge on the same person, so despite the way they first meet, they warily agree to a temporary alliance. Turns out there isn't just a single foe for them to tackle, they have many enemies and the author never lets us rest secure in who is a friend and who isn't. I loved all the twists and turns in this one and watching the relationship between Hakan and Ramorran develop from antagonism/distrust to grudging respect to attraction and more.

This is a spin-off series set in the same world as the The Prince's Soulmate series. It's a great adventure story with some paranormal aspects. I liked the found family vibe in the pirate crew. The love story is very sweet with a moderate steam level. I'm looking forward to reading more about these pirates in the future.

Different but really good!

Katy is new to me author and I loved d the premise was of this story so I gave it a go. It was different from what I expected a pirate story to be but none the less, I really enjoyed it. It was actually a pretty sweet story with a twist I didn't see but loved anyways.

DNF, just not my thing, so slow and drawn out, no disrespect to the author intended.

I enjoyed this. A low angst, quick read. I thought it was going to go pretty dark for a bit in the middle with the Sixblades, but it was anticlimatic. I think that could have really been fleshed out, but it started and ended so soon. I think the story has good bones, but could use some muscle, if that makes sense. I liked the characters. I'm interested in seeing what's in store for these pirates in book 2.

Pirates an MM romance? This is a first for me and what a joy! There’s plenty of action and a few twists that kept my attention the entire time. I enjoyed the supernatural aspect as well! Ramorran and Hakan take some time to warm up to each other but when they do it beautiful! Many side characters are introduced as well that brought a lot of life to the story and opportunities for more stories set in this world. I can’t wait for the next one!
