Michael Jordan is considered the best basketball player to ever play the game. Jordan won 6 NBA championships, 6 NBA finals most valuable player award, and made 14 all star appearances! That is truly a legacy! This biography of Michael Jordan, by Jeff Hawkins, looks at the life and legacy of the basketball superstar, from his youth in Wilmington. North Carolina to his NBA championships. Michael moved to Wilmington, North Carolina before his first birthday and spent the rest of his childhood in there. Jordan was cut from his high school boys varsity basketball team as a sophomore and briefly thought about quitting the game. He dramatically improved on the JV team and quickly emerged as the program's top point guard as long as a top college recruit. Jordan attended the University of North Carolina. As a sophomore at UNC, Guthridge said " we ran a drill in practice where players went one-on-one against each other. There was nobody who could stop Michael and Michael could stop everyone"(28). Jordan was so good by his sophomore year at one of the best college basketball programs in the nation which separates Jordan from the rest of other great players. He captured an NCAA championship with the tar heels in his three seasons at UNC. Jordan was drafted in 1984 by the Chicago Bulls with the third overall pick in the draft. This was the begging of his 15 year career in the NBA where he submitted his legacy into the game of basketball. A theme Jordan portrays is to never give up because Jordan having been cut himself in high school and on the brink of quitting now is a 6x NBA champion and one of the greatest to play the game. My favorite character was Michael Jordan for many reasons. First, he kept on working on his game after being cut from the varsity basketball team. This takes a lot of courage because if I was in his shoes during this time I would have given up for sure. Jordan demonstrates the theme of never give up perfectly after not giving up after being cut from varsity basketball. Also, Jordan was my favorite character because of his hall of fame induction speech. Jordan explained that he never forgot how some people, at different stages in his life, doubted his skill set. That is what motivated Jordan to succeed. This motivation led him to an amazing NBA career and defines his character which is something that is special about Jordan. These reactions to Jordan's legacy are more personal reactions rather than the authors intention. Michael Jordan will forever be considered one of the greatest to ever play the game we all love today because of his major achievements and life challenges he over came. Overall, this biography about Michael Jordan's career and life was a very interesting read! I learned so many new things about Jordan. Every good thing must come to an end though and when asked if Jordan would return after a press conference announcing his retirement Jordan said, " I just want to fulfill my year and enjoy it"(84). This was the ending of Jordan's career and legacy he made which was a sad day for the basketball world. I certainly recommend this book to anybody who likes basketball or has been around the game. It is a must read for all of Jordan's fans around the world!
This book was fabulous. It explained in great detail about Michael Jordan's life and career. Before i read this book, i didn't know that he retired three times and played for the Chicago White Sox AA team. I also didn't know that he played for the Washington Wizards. This book was written chronological order, from the beginning of his life to what he is doing right now.
Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York but then moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. Michael had 4 other siblings, Larry, James, Roslyn and Deloris. Michael was a great athlete, in fact he was named the best athlete in his school. Michael tried out for the varsity team but his coach cut him because he wanted Michael to work on his fundamentals and skills a little more. Michael then made the varsity team the next year and was named as one of the best basketball players in the country. Michael was then accepted to full ride to The University of North Carolina. After 3 years Michael declared for the 1984 NBA draft. Michael was selected 3rd overall to the Chicago Bulls where he became an instant star and won Rookie of the Yea. He stayed on the bulls for 9 years then retired and became a baseball player on the Chicago White Sox AA team because of his fathers death.
