A power struggle back home threatens the fragile peace that their community enjoys while Sarah and her companions continue to work their way south in book 2 of Eve of Extinction. The 3-million-book bestselling author Mike Kraus, working with Stephanie Mylchreest, brings you a thriller that's sure to hit close to home and leave you wondering "what if" long after you finish reading. As of 2021, an estimated 97% of the world's financial transactions are digital. What would happen if that digital money - those 1's and 0's - vanished overnight? The world's major banks are in chaos as a disastrous software upgrade has wiped out their customer's records, resulting in the loss of dozens of trillions of dollars in the blink of an eye. Chaos quickly spreads as the general populace panics, resorting first to theft to obtain what they need to survive before turning to more violent measures. Caught in downtown New York at the reading of the will for her late mother, Sarah - an ER nurse - finds herself stranded in a burning Manhattan with her daughter Mia hundreds of miles away in North Carolina. Halfway across the globe, Mia's estranged father learns of the disaster while working as a wildlife photographer in the Amazon rain forest, and resolves to do whatever it takes to make it home. Meanwhile, in North Carolina, a group of Sarah's closest friends does their best to not only watch over Mia, but help guide the survivors of their community as they navigate the treacherous waters of their new reality, discovering along the way who their real friends - and enemies - truly are.
Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).
Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.
Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.
Really liking this series so far. Good story line and character development. But if they use the word tapestry one more time! It’s so weird that it’s used in early every chapter. At least with every character once than once. Otherwise good story. But maybe get a thesaurus.
Thank you for the "Previously" section; these recaps are always helpful, though it should mean there is less need for the recalling of a character's previously storyline in the prose. I like most of the characters and in particular, the journey of Sarah, Tony and Jeremy. The Asheville people provide the view of deteriorating society in a populated area. Again, Asheville is continually called a town when it is very definitely a city and we basically only see a neighborhood or two of folks there. I'm less keen on June than I was. She is a decent, strong female character, but she is a bit too stubborn about her rose-colored glasses view and not inclined to listened to other POVs. Lucas also needs to get over his angst a bit. I'm less excited about Nate as he does not add much to the story and I can't imagine his sudden appearance to a daughter who has never seen him changing that opinion much. Is the implication that Mia needs Dad to come to the rescue?
3 pages of navel gazing per half page of action, much of it tediously repetitive. And some really unbelievable character “developments.” Jeremy and Victor to be specific. I would never leave my kid with June: She keeps leaving her primary responsibility to put herself unnecessarily in danger. Firing “warning shots” is not a good idea; if you’re faced with a deadly threat, aim to stop the threat. If you’re not, you shouldn’t be firing at all. Also; you can’t siphon gas (or anything else) from an underground tank; the hose outlet must be lower than the inlet. And modern cars all have anti-siphon devices in the fuel filler pipe so siphoning with a garden hose is just not possible. Look it up.
ER Nurse Sarah is in Manhattan, which like the rest of America has been brought to its knees in the wake of a sudden banking crisis. Law and order soon break down and she's increasingly frantic to return home to her daughter Mia, back in North Carolina. Other characters' storylines are interspersed, as Sarah travels with Tony and his autistic son Jeremy towards Asheville. All have their personal agendas or inner demons to overcome, that make Abandon, (Book 2 of Stephanie Mylchreest and Mike Kraus's epic Eve of Extinction series), a gritty, realistic adventure with non-stop action to grip you firmly by the imagination throughout. Book two of this incredible series and it does not let up! Well written and action filled as we follow these awesome characters on their same but different journeys. The authors do a fantastic of intertwining the different threads and keeping us on our toes with the twists and turns and surprises thrown down in our paths as the danger and the drama intensifis. Thrilling, gripping and highly addictive, it’s a battle of survival and I look forward to book three!
This book is a slightly different take on the apocalypse - why it happens, but it is the same, society falls apart. I am really enjoying the series. The characters are realistic and relatable, and the scenarios are believable. I have read both the first and second book in the series will continue to read the read of the series.
It is a very enjoyable read, and I think if you like apocalyptic books, you would most likely like this book.
Sarah and friends are slowly making their way toward Asheville but keep running into roadblocks. Nate is alone and headed north from the Amazon on a treacherous journey to get to Mia. June and friends are doing what they can to survive and protect Mia and their neighborhood with mixed results.
Didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. Characters seemed to make all the wrong decisions. June not backing Lucas seemed to be the biggest one. Also, EVERY TIME they go to a stash point something bad happens. Will you folks NEVER LEARN? Nate's story did get interesting though. If I decide to continue, I might just read his parts.
A really great second part to this exciting, well written post apocalyptic series! I do really like the main character, great ideas, well thought out plot, I felt you experience the story with the people involved! A really enjoyable read! I can't wait for the next part!
Unbelievable, a disastrous, chaos How will people function with the problems with the banks. No money. Fast paced, who committed this crime and why. Well written as always to keep you gripped.
