Fate. Destiny. Is it truly written in the heavens? For siblings, Gabe and Mirah, the answer seems to be yes, to their painful realization. However, it’s not only the two of them that find themselves tested to their limits as they face their worst foe yet.
There’s the acquisitor who for all his efforts couldn’t keep safe the one person loved by the young man he considers as his own son. Then there’s the young man whose world becomes changed, seeing everything through the eyes of vengeance because of grief’s cruel blade. Then there’s the fire wielder that could end up extinguishing her own flame to defend friends after finally trusting enough to let in the one person she realizes she can’t do without. Then there’s the man who refuses to accept he lost his best friend but fights to keep alive that friend who he still sees before him. Then there’s the warrior, that though it be the death of him, will keep his promise to protect the one who has become his world. Finally, there’s the one who loved truly as deeply as he was capable of and still clings to that former image of himself to give a last gift to his love. Perhaps the only proper redemption for him with the cruel prison created for him.
At the front lines, stand Mirah and Gabe. And what is the final battlefield it takes them to? Mirah is no longer the girl that needs to be protected, to be bailed out of danger. Rather, she becomes the protector, committed to standing between the shadow beast and those dearest to her. Likewise, Gabe has surrendered to his destined role of somehow delivering his world from enslavement by the same beast, no matter what dreaded path that eventually takes him upon. And their enemy? He knows their weakness. Unfortunately, it’s each other, and he’ll use it, like a dagger going through their heart.
The journey has been incredible, and we became invested in each one we have met along the way, including Ammo, Sojin, Neviah, Zeev, Tur, Nate, Mirah, and Gabe. Their struggles, battlefields, we experienced them, along with their deepest losses. It was bittersweet many times, for with each victory, it came at a heartbreaking price repeatedly. We also watched each companion change before our eyes so that they could face that final battlefield, do the impossible, and give it all if necessary.
Although this is supposed to be the end of the journey for our group, it didn’t feel like it. With the way it left off, it points for more as there were a couple of loose ends that beg to be tied up and a huge bombshell that is disclosed at the end. I’ll look forward to reentering this world if the time comes as I’m sad to say goodbye to it, but I loved every minute spent in it.

MY THOUGHTS
This is my favourite book out of the series. It is fast paced, suspenseful, has high stakes and is overall, the best written book. I did still notice a few grammatical errors and the final chapter of book 4 was repeated at the start of this one, making me think I had gone crazy, but it was easy to overlook this time as I was so invested in the storyline.

Cully Mack has mastered the art of cliff-hangers in this book. A lot of the time, something huge would happen and then it switched to another character. This made me read through the book a lot faster as I needed to know what happened next.

A great final instalment. I do hope that the author does a spin off series as there are a few loose ends not tied up and a big reveal at the end of this book that simply needs to be expanded on.

An indie author that you should definitely check out.

A satisfying ending...then the twist!

I loved the storyline and the way the story worked out for most of the characters. This fifth book was a bit difficult to read, though. The editing left in a ton of typos and phrasing, and incorrect wording that needed to be fixed. I don't skim when I read...I read each word, so when there are glaring mistakes, they slow me down as I try to decipher what it should say! Much as I enjoyed the story's progression, I was disappointed by the lack of quality editing. If I hadn't already read the first four books, I probably wouldn't have finished this one. I'm sure I won't read any possible sequels.
