Another great guide. I really liked the succinct restaurant summaries here. It will be a good guide to use for places to go eat next time I make it to Orlando! The information on the parks was basic and pretty much things I already knew.

Walt Disney World with Kids 2010 by Kim Wright Wiley (pp. 472)

Touted as one of the best vacation guides to Walt Disney World, the title is a bit of mis-marketing. It really should be ‘An Overview of WDW with Some Age Related Content’ – but that title doesn’t sell books. The book never explicitly says it, but less than half the park attractions will be appropriate for 5 year olds and younger. She focuses on parades, shows, and expensive character dinner experiences to satisfy the youngster set. Really 7 to 10 seems to be the best age range based on the content provided.

Wiley is clearly a Disney fan, but avoids talking about budgeting and cost strategies. The reality of the costs in today’s economy, the premium costs of Disney, and families trying to maximize their vacation dollar gets missed. She’s recommending it to everyone. But after reading the book, Chapter 0 should have been “How much should I budget? And What’s the best age ranges to take if I only go once?” She assumes that you and your family will go multiple times. There are people who do go every three years or live more locally, but as a vacation guide it seems more like consolidated list of reviews versus you’re a true travel guide. It’s just too generic.

There’s no real decent recommendations for large group stays and the book never clearly states that a 2-bedroom suite that is common at many of the indoor water parks and theme hotels nationally will cost you $800-1000/night rack rate here.

If you’re looking for a general overview of the property offerings and how to outline your must see attraction list while intermingling food offerings, this is a pretty good read. But you can probably save yourself the $17.99 by plunking down for 20 minutes at the bookstore and reading only the blue coded tips, the summary charts, and the reader submitted recommendations always included in quotation marks. Otherwise stick to Internet sites for your research or contact a travel agent to unravel the Disney experience a bit more.

I am a Disney World fanatic and have been for 23 years. This means I catch up on certain guidebooks each year to see what I can expect in way of changes (have been known to visit Disney World 4 times a year for the past 2 decades and stay up to 2 weeks each visit).

I usually don't look at Fodor's Walt Disney World guidebooks but decided I would do so this year just to see how it is.

It is not a bad book but if you really want to dig in to Disney and glean all the info you really need, skip this and reach for two other books instead- Birnbaum Guides 2012 Walt Disney World: The Official Guide AND The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2012 by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa. I get both of these each year. Birnbaum sugarcoats everything but get it for the photos and the glorious color maps and the current prices and other useful info but be sure you have the Unofficial Guide for the truth! They do not kiss ass like Birnbaum and they include advice from actual visitors and give you in depth info that you do not get anywhere else.

Fodor's doesn't begin to hold a candle to either and certainly not to both of those books. The info is limited and geared to people with big wallets. They do not actually go and check things out like the Unofficial writers do and don't have anywhere near the info these two books do.

Skip this one and get the other two or just ask me!

A reasonable overview for most families, but distinctly lacking in both information about Disney's new FastPass+ system and any information for parents of young children. Many rides that the author deemed fine for all ages were way too intense for our 3.75yo, and I really could have used indicators of which rides have dark or thunderstormy sections and which allow for rider swap.

I didn't really learn anything new here, but we go to WDW often enough that we know our way around the parks, resorts, and Disney policies. This would be a decent resource for someone who is planning a trip for the first time. I didn't think there were enough pictures, and I'll admin it - that's why I borrowed it from the library.

Most helpful for general planning, understanding the parks layouts and options and deciding which Disney add-ons to buy (dining plan, etc.) Wish it had itinieraries! Doesn't include the newest dining plan options or go into much depth about the on-site resorts- focuses on higher end ones.

A Simple and Essential Guide That Covers the Fundamentals …

This book was reviewed as part of Amazon's Vine program which included a free advance copy of the book.

Our family of 4 (with two daughters aged 6 and 3) visited Disney World (Orlando, FL) in July 2011 and are heading back the first week of January 2013. We exclusively used a travel agent to assist in planning our first trip and while we had a blast, we felt like we missed several experiences for the kids unnecessarily (although I’m sure everyone feels this way when they return). While the lessons learned from the previous trip were essential in preparing us for planning this upcoming trip, the FODOR’S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2013 actually educated us enough to plan our trip more effectively.

FODOR’S DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS serves as a nicely organized and fairly thorough quick-hit reference guide that answers the questions most parents need answered to make informed decisions about everything from accommodations, restaurants, rides and attractions.

- The book’s coverage is broad, but specific. Chapters are designated to each of the major venues of Orlando’s “Disneyscape” (Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and the 2 waterparks, etc.), peripheral attractions (Downtown Disney, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, Islands of Adventure) and even Disney Cruise Lines.

- Maps: A convenient and simplified overview map of each venue is provided at the beginning of the chapters.

- Reference Tables (plenty of them): Provide handy at-a-glance information on the rides and restaurants for each of the major Disney sites (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, nearby Disney hotels, etc.). Price ranges for restaurants and height requirements for certain rides certainly help in the planning process.

- Easily identifiable icons draw attention to specific, helpful information: insider tips, helpful hints, money/time saving tips, ride “scare factors” and Hidden Mickeys (various forms of Mickey Mouse images that are “hidden in plain sight” throughout Disney World).

- The book does a good job in steering rides and attractions to kids in certain age groups rather than “lumping” them into one group. Information aimed at kids is presented in more of a caution-oriented and suggestive manner, not pushy or fear-inducing.

- I found the summaries of the major attractions to be very descriptive, tantalizing and accurate.

Overall, I found the FODOR’S WALT DISNEY WORLD WITH KIDS 2013 to be an excellent and informative trip-planning tool. While I am a Disney World “veteran”, I still learned some new things from the guide, like the Hidden Mickeys and Disney’s “parent swap” method allows parents to test the suitability of a ride for their children. Additionally, I like the attention the book gives to Downtown Disney and some of the more obscure areas in the complex. While I wished the book had pictures to identify rides and attractions throughout, I don’t feel it tarnishes the overall effectiveness of the book. I was also surprised more attention wasn’t given to one of Disney’s most effective offerings: Fast Pass. Regardless, this guide was certainly an asset in preparing for our upcoming trip and we will definitely be using it throughout our visit.

I used this book to plan a trip to Walt Disney World with my husband and two sons who are five and seven years old. The most helpful part of this book was the detailed descriptions of the rides for each park and the discussion of what ages the rides were most appropriate for. There is an easy to refer to chart for each park of the "Don't Miss" rides for different age groups of kids. This was helpful because there were several rides that our kids could have gone on because they met the height requirement that would have been too fast and/or scary for them. We rode a couple of rides that the book said our kids were too young for because they really wanted to and both times the ride turned out to be too intense for them just like the book said.

The part of this book that I thought was lacking was the discussion of restaurants and food options. There is virtually no discussion of the quick service restaurants because the author says there is only so much to say about fast food. I think there is actually a lot that could have been said about the quick service options. I would have liked to know ahead of time what foods each one offered so I could have chosen to eat at the ones that had the healthier options. I thought the descriptions of the table service restaurants could have been more detailed as well.

Overall, this was a helpful guide for planning our Walt Disney World vacation.

I found this book to be useful, providing tips that I haven't found in websites or other books.

I especially appreciated some of the Quick Guides... for example, a listing of what ride is where, the height requirements, speed of line, time needed, and age range. That will be helpful when planning out a day and trying to make sure we see all we want to see within a specific time frame. The fact that these Quick Guides are on blue pages make them easy to flip to for quick reference.

There are also some great "Insider's Secrets" scattered throughout each chapter. For example: if you're closed out of a character meal and the Cinderella Castle, the book tells you other lesser-known locations to try.

Disclosure: I was given this book via The Amazon Vine program in return for posting my honest review on the Amazon site. My opinion is my own. I'm sharing it here because I found this to be a helpful book!

Just as a person's story cannot be told by one biographer, so it is that one place cannot be extensively reviewed by one travel book. I thought Birnbaum's was the only book I would need for Walt Disney World but, in fact, there are plenty of gems found in this one too. This book makes use of pictures and special sections where most guidebooks don't. I'm a bit of a nerd on this, but I like that the pages are glossy and shiny. The book details all of the rides at WDW, Sea World, and Universal, but it often skips some of the shopping and eating places. For that you will have to go to other guides to fill in the gaps. Get Birnbaum's for everything detailed about WDW, but make sure that you grab Fodor's as a nice complement and a way to learn about the areas surrounding Orlando too.

This is packed full of information (tips, prices, reviews) from hotels, restaurants, shopping for Disney's attractions, Universal and Sea World, as well as surrounding Orlando attractions. Opinions are scattered throughout the book from customers/visitors that add a "real" sense of what's good and what's not. Maps, listings and descriptions of rides and shows are aplenty and even a brief history of Florida is included in this book. A definite must-read for the first timer, and even for the seasoned Disney traveler (like I am), who wants to get new ideas on old traditional events/attractions, and even discover new things to do.

A travel guide to Walt Disney World and other touristy things to do in Orlando.

This was a decent way to do initial planning for Disney World and gave helpful reviews of dining locations in the parks. I did find once we got to Disney and started using their app that it is way more helpful. This book leaves out numerous rides (it only talks about the most popular or least popular ones) and is obviously limited by the print date. I skimmed the non-Disney parts of this book (which is about half of it) and it is helpful to have Universal, SeaWorld and everything in one book in case you want to mix parks because obviously none of them are going to provide info on their competitors.

(For the 2014 edition) This book was printed before the new Fantasyland opened, so I was disappointed. I checked out the book specifically for that information. For someone who needs general help with WDW, this book is excellent.

(For the 2008 edition) If you've been to WDW recently, this book probably wouldn't help. However, I hadn't been since I was 18; I could be wrong, but I don't think there was such a thing as All Star Resorts, FastPass, single rider lines, Animal Kingdom, etc. then. This book allowed me to keep my sanity while preparing a trip with a two-year-old.

I'm not going to give ratings to these books, but I am going to keep track of which ones I read.

This one was my favorite to read, which is funny because it is geared to families with kids. But I found the information so much more informative, since the author was going out of their way to explain why rides might be too scary for kids and when certain attractions are crowded because of the swarm of kids. So now I know that I want to hit up those scary rides, and avoid those other attractions! =)

PLUS, I finally got an in-depth guide to Universal Studios!

If ur going to DisneyWorld(Florida), this is a book I recommend taking w/u if you can. Not only is there info on Disney & the 3 other parks associated w/Disney, but there is also info on Universal Studios(Harry Potter's Wizarding World...I've seen this & it's awesome if u r a fan of Harry Potter) and Sea World....yup, there's more to do in Florida besides DW. My personal recommendation for those doing DisneyWorld, especially w/kids....get out of that area & do other things that don't have to do w/Disney...just to change it up...u'll be glad u did.

I thought this was a very helpful guidebook about how to do Disney with kids. Wiley provides tips for different ages of kids and seems to know quite a bit of inside info. I especially like her easy-to-read lists of "Must-See" attractions for each park and the recommended minimum age for each attraction. I ear-marked several pages and plan to go back and review right before our Disney World trip next month.

I will be going to Disneyworld in 2012, so this book was perfect. I've been to DisneyWorld a lot of times at this point. This book every year informs me of new things coming to the parks. Not only that, but you get to read about Universal, SeaWorld and all kinds of areas in Central Florida (Orlando area). Comes w/ a pull-out map and has reviews of all kinds of things like food and rides. Would def. recommend.

Too bad! I didn't know a newer one was out. I bought the 2014 edition.

I really like the level of detail in describing the attractions. It will really help me plan my trip. I confess that I'm having loads of fun reading it. The only thing I don't like is that they only list the food stops in Disney World that they like the best. I needed a more comprehensive list. We won't always need the best food, sometimes we'll need the most convenient.

This author knows what she is talking about, after all, she has been to Walt Disney World over 50 times. She offers great tips, fascinating strategies and many examples of what to do and what NOT to do. I found myself snickering throughout as I read her descriptions, opinions and knowledge about this great theme park. I'm all pumped up for going soon!

This was our first time in Disney with the kids and this book was a valuable resource. We loved the tips, the maps and the recommendations. From our experience Ms. Wiley was "on the nose" when it comes to recommending rides for the ager groups our children were belong to (two and four AND A HALF!!!!).

I've even showed it to friends who go to Disney every year and they found it helpful.

I normally use Lonely Planet guides when I travel, and browsed through the Unofficial Guide to WDW on my last trip, but found Fodor's guide to be really useful. The color photographs provided clear images, and the well-created maps gave me a great idea of location of resorts and parks. The restaurant and attraction reviews were also quite helpful.

This book had a lot of good information but it was WAY TOO BUSY for me! I like informational books to be in some sort of order. Print was too small and in my opinion, not very well organized. I ended up thumbing through it but decided I had other books on Disney that I liked better and had the same information.

We are planning a trip for next year, so I am in the research stage. I found this book extremely helpful, with excellent tips on traveling with kids. I especially appreciated the lists of rides that are must sees and broken down by age category. Good resource for anyone planning a trip with young ones!

I wanted to have an idea of what Disney World would be like and what all the rides, etc. are like so that we have a general idea of what to do. There are good descriptions of each ride with height restrictions, but also scare factors and suggested ages for rides. She goes into what rides are most crowded and when also. So far I think it's helpful. We'll see if that's still the case next week.

I consider myself to be pretty well versed on most things Disney World. This book gives a general overview on Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and other Florida attractions. The Disney portion only gives overviews of various attractions, and the overviews are extremely brief. This is good for a new traveler to Disney, but for someone like me, there is nothing new to be had.

I usually really appreciate Fodor's guidebooks but this just feels like they threw in a lot of extra padding. A third of the book is the parks and hotels; the rest is Orlando and Central Florida. Thumbed through it for the food choice descriptions, which were concise and informative; tucked into Orlando's other restaurants. Comes with a tough to rip map of Orlando.

I only utilized the Walt Disney World & area dining sections, but the advice in this book was invaluable for planning daily itineraries for each day in the four parks. My only criticism is the lack of up-to-date info on EPCOT. (Look elsewhere for details on "Frozen"-themed attractions in the Norway portion of the World Showcase and the Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival that replaces Captain EO.)

Imformative book. I like that it has favorite attractions broken out by age for each of the parks. "The Scare Factor" and "Helpful Hints" are very useful, too. Very good basic book without being too overwhelming.
