A very enjoyable book with an engaging plot that took me back to the great American horror writers of the 70's and 80's. I was lucky enough to interview Paul Flewitt after reading this. To hear my full review and the interview check out May's Room 13 Radio podcast.

I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. This is in no way reflected in my opinion of this book.

Poor Jeffrey had all of the elements of a good horror novel. It was fast paced, gory, and even had a cannibalistic serial killer. All the things I usually love in a story, yet,,, I just couldn't get into it. I think part of the problem was all of the foreshadowing. Nearly every chapter had some. To the point I kept hearing,,,,Dun Dun Dun!!!!Or maybe it was the plot twists. There were a lot of them. We have the power hungry man who wants to be Mayor, the aging Sheriff who is having a power struggle with both the power hungry guy and the feds trying to take over the case, a priest that is crazy as a loon, teenage witches, a cannibal serial killer, and then there's Poor Jeffrey. Way too much going on in a town where 'nothing ever happens'. I think this could have been a very good book with a little more work. Paul Flewitt has talent as a writer and I would read more of his writing. This one just didn't do it for me. An ok 3 star read.

"In terms of Mr Flewitt’s writing style there is only one word that comes to mind. Easy. By that I mean easy to read. Easy to follow. Easy to set down and get immediately back in the flow when you pick it up again. I really enjoyed this one for that reason. This reads as if it has been written by someone with ten other novels behind them. It’s confident without being arrogant. It’s articulate without being snobbish. It’s intelligent stuff without being a know it all. I could definitely read a lot more of this."

This book has a very promising premise, and an okay narrative. Sadly the execution makes for a rather bland reading experience. The story shifts its focus so much that it hardly has the time to build up tension in any of the scenes that are portrayed. There are also characters that we spend a considerable amount of time with that doesn’t add anything to the story whatsoever. There are also a considerable display of toxic masculinity and ridicule of ‘soft men’ which does nothing for the narrative at all, but rather just makes me as a reader frustrated with characters I am supposed to emphasize with. This could have been a pretty decent book, but it isn’t in its current form.

Jeffrey, Tommy, Chloe and Jade. Jade was relatively new to the group, not having grown up with the other three, but she loved it they accepted her as sister and friend. For Jeffrey and Chloe, young love was in the works. As the other two look on, they smile at their two friends' budding romance. Not one of them wanted to let each other down. They each had the others' backs.

On a night that should have been spent studying for exams, Jeffrey trips, falls on the side of a road, gets hit by a truck and dies. The events following his death, and the resulting grief of his three remaining friends, begin the dark tale of base human compulsions and an evil that lurks in the shadows.

Tommy, the best friend who shared a common bond of losing an older brother, felt the most guilty. Trying to overcome his grief and inexplicable guilt, he turns to a grimoire and attempts to bring back Jeffrey. He solicits the help of Chloe and Jade and, poor Jeffrey, the attempt worked. In a very sorry way.

Jeffrey was now a walking cadaver. He can think, speak and still lend wisdom. What to do about his rotting body, now that is another thing entirely.

As the guilt and grief overcome the three surviving friends, a young mute girl disappears. This spearheads an investigation by the local police. Then Chloe disappears. Eventually, the FBI are called but are met with dead ends wherever they turn.

Chaos and anarchy start ruling the town and the killer makes his move on the available young girls around. As more and more bodies turn up, the killer is out and amongst them, gleeful in his anonymity.

This was supposed to be a simple zombie horror story. Instead, we have a zombie, experimentation with witchcraft and necromancy, cannibalism and dark spirits.

It can be very simple to write a review when all one has to do is relive the events of a story. It is downright difficult and disturbing to try and relive what happened to Poor Jeffrey, the town, its people, and the young friends.

Through this, we will get to know Cal Denver. The evil that is this creature is truly and remarkably depraved, yet fascinating. What kind of evil he truly is, we only had a glimpse, but it was enough. The horrors that unfold during his stint in this town is truly unforgettable and horrifying.

Paul Flewitt's style of writing is curious. His tale of horror is a surprisingly light read but it's grip on the mind is strong and it never lets up. The vivid imagery tells a tale that is more than what it truly is. He cajoles his readers, telling them to hold on and to keep reading. Readers will hold on, will keep reading, and will keep visualizing.

Poor Jeffrey is terrifying. It's calmly told tale of grief and the extent to which people will forget right from wrong to overcome their emotions, gives insight on just how low people will go for their own personal gratifications.

It's even calmer telling of the murders and killing... now that is even more horrifying.

Just remember. Don't. Close. Your. Eyes.

I'm not really a big horror buff so I went into this expecting that it would probably be a tough read for me. The surprise was on me. Aside from the killer's method for murdering people, and the fact that the first victim was a child, I really got into this book. That probably had to do with the fact that there was quite a bit of suspense, and that there were actually two stories unfolding.

First, poor Jeffrey. Sweet, clumsy, the voice of reason among his friends Jeffrey gets hit by a truck on his way home one evening, and dies. His friends in their grief decide to try to raise him from the dead. Not really expecting it to work, they are shocked when it does, but not quite right. This starts a chain of reactions that eventually lead several of them into the path of the serial killer now living in their small town.

Cal Denver is used to blending in. He moves from town to town looking for his next meal. Unfortunately, Cal is no normal man seeking employment, a place to live, and a home cooked meal. Nope, old Cal is a cannibal. And can I say YUCK!? I've got to agree with another reviewer, the detail of what he does is a bit much for me. And when I think about it, seriously gross. It isn't excruciating, but any description about eating live flesh is just UGH.

There is a lot of petty in-fighting amongst the townspeople. As a result, the FBI gets called in, and there is more fighting there. It takes a while before they start to find the victims and the two separate stories blend together seamlessly. Although a bit morose there at the end, both stories do wrap up and in a way that is not altogether expected. I think the author did a great job with this one and if you're a fan of horror or have the stomach for this type of book, I found it a good read and would recommend it to any fan of this genre.

Poor Jeffrey is a horror story about a town under the threat of a serial killer. The book starts with the back story of Jeffrey and how he dies. Then goes in to the serial killer and what he does (some of that could have been have been left to the imagination) although I’m not really into the horror genre, I did find this story to be a real page turner. The story is well written and author did an amazing job of developing the story.

What I didn’t like was just some of the details from the killer’s perspective. It grossed me out. Just saying.

The story follows Jeffrey, tommy Chloe and Jade, on their journey after Jeffrey’s death. The story looks at the grief that the 3 remaining friends share. Poor Jeffrey is stuck in the middle even after death. Soon after his death his friend Chloe sub comes to the serial killer and that’s is where the 2 remaining friends seem to lose themselves. Jeffrey I feel in some ways brings them all back together and helps the town’s people stop the serial killer.

All and all this is good read.

Poor Jeffrey by Paul Flewitt

Young Jeffrey Kinsey is killed in an accident. His three best friends, Tommy, Chloe and Jade decide they want to try to bring him back. They never expect what happens next. Add to this, girls in town have been disappearing, found dead and half eaten. Exactly what is going on, who or what is doing this to these young ladies? And what will become of "Poor Jeffrey"?

A fast paced psychological/thrilling/horror story. An original story line, with vivid detail that brings you into a world of terror. I highly recommend to those who love horror/thrillers filled with bloody gory details.

I enjoyed reading this book and loved the author's writing style which drew me in. The story begins with Jeffrey, a kind of klutzy kid who just can't seem to do a lot right, when he dies he realizes one thing he thought he did right was to have three amazing friends, unfortunately this may also be his undoing as well. From here the story takes a dark turn and readers are going to find the horror of a killer, the drama and evil of not only that killer but of what people are capable of when they suffer the loss of a loved one.

Unexpected surprise! Around 80% in the book, if you think you know what will happen, know instead that you do not have a clue. I LOVE surprises! 95% ~ I did NOT see that coming.

This is a quick read, and even with many POVs, never confusing. I enjoyed every single moment. Even if you giggle at the Prologue, just you wait. The horror comes, and it's stomach-turning! I'll be looking for more from Paul Flewitt.

Poor Jeffery is a master stroke of horror fiction. The characters are well rounded & it's easy to hear their voices when reading them. The basic plot of Jeffery's misfortune is but a baseline that holds together a far wider experience & nuanced story. Great characterization & an addictive writing style make this book an absolute must for the horror reader & wider fan as a whole. Paul has earned every one of my 5 Stars.

A very unusual book .. but in a good way. It took awhile to connect with the characters but they definitely grow on you. Once I got going I couldn't put it down, anxiously anticipating what will happen next. Jeffrey's character is really easy to love with all the pity at the same time. A great read!

Let me start out with the fact that this is not my normal genre. Poor Jeffrey is well written with no typos and no problems with grammar. I could not get into the story, however. It didn't catch my attention and was hard for me to finish. If you enjoy mystery with a touch of horror, this story may very well be something you would like. It just wasn't my thing.

This was not a normal read for me. It was well written but jumped around a lot. The last half of the story I started to get into it more and enjoyed it a bit more.
