Edward Winslow Bryant, Jr. was born August 27, 1945 in White Plains NY and was raised on a cattle ranch in Wyoming. He attended the University of Wyoming, where he earned a Master’s in English in 1968 and ’69. He went to the Clarion Writers’ Workshop in 1968. In 1972 he moved to Denver CO, where he founded the Northern Colorado Writers Workshop. He helped found and run many other workshops and classes as well, including the Colorado Springs Writers Workshop.

Bryant was an accomplished science-fiction writer, mostly of short stories. He began publishing SF work with “They Come Only in Dreams” and “Sending the Very Best”, both in January 1970. For the next two decades he was a frequent contributor to magazines and anthologies, and though his fictional output slowed in the ’90s, he was still active as a critic. He was a familiar figure at conventions, especially in Colorado fandom. He was a frequent guest at the World Horror Convention, and chaired the 2000 convention in Denver.

With Harlan Ellison he wrote Phoenix without Ashes (1978), and solo short novel Fetish appeared in 1991. He also edited 2076: The American Tricentennial (1977), and was an editor for Wormhole Books. He wrote screenplays and occasionally appeared in films.

2024 #2: Trilobite

Don't be fooled by the menacing title: this book ain't about stories of Lovecraftian Creatures at the bottom of the sea. Rather, these are three (3) short and interesting stories filled with heart, humour, and wit.

Bryant starts with 1. "An Easter Treasure", about three kids trying to find a sense of normalcy and fun in an apocalyptic (?) future household. The trio is led by the eldest brother, Boo, who tries to make Holy Week (haha) a fun experience for his siblings starting from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. The ending is a downer but in a cartoonish way. Bryant follows it up with 2. "Coon Dawgs", a short and fun recollection of a woman about her family pets and how her mother used them to get rid of a parasitic (like in the Korean Movie sense) couple who constantly freeloads on every family they come across. The fantastic ending will have you cheering. Bryant ends the book with 3. "Drummer's Star" about a band who is in dire news of a drummer after the last one got his jaw shattered by a dissatisfied crowd. Soon, a stranger named Ringo contacts their manager and promises to replace their drummer. Ringo plays phenomenally but the manager senses something strange. Where did he come from? The answer (although not spelt out) will amaze and amuse you.

Those expecting a dark collection like Bryant's "Darker Passions" will be disappointed. But if you want something less disturbing and vexing, this book is right for you.
