Harm by Kayti Nika Raet is a tale of the true grit of a survivor, with ultimate dangers from all directions and hopes for a better future. Ms. Raet does such a wonderful and believable job of creating her world, setting the tone and the emotional wallop, that the lines of fact and fiction become blurred. Her characters are survivors, and it is written into their “author DNA.” Tough times, tough characters, soft hearts and learning to trust others, it’s all here from Niko on down as the struggle against the odds and the unfairness of “the system” in a world where the have nots are used like throw away rags. Following Niko’s journey is riveting, thrilling and unforgettable, as Kayti Nika Raet’s bold style uncovers a new heroine in a time of need in this addicting and well-written dystopian series.

Harm starts where Niko left off and given the events from the ending of Book One, Niko needs to lay low. Arriving on the outskirts of Cherai City, Niko adopts a new name ‘Harm’ - a shortening of her first name, a metaphor, and the reality of the world she inhabits.
Unlike Amaryllis City, Cherai is tougher and slither hunters aren’t as prized or revered. The gatekeepers of the city are cruel and that attitude pervades from inside the walls to outside, where survival is Darwinian.
Outside the walls, Harm builds alliances in order to survive in a world where falling on the ground will result in death by acid. And not acid that makes you want to stare at the pretty lights and party, but acid that will consume you whole.
New characters are introduced: Songhay and Roosevelt, two new favorites of this reader. Mysteries of the exploited Grey Men are explored and a deeper story ARC is revealed about the creation of the slither hunters and Niko’s connection to the same.
Raet has a vibrant writing style. Her characters have a ‘real’ aspect to them, even while grounded in a dystopian-make-believe world. There is also an ‘awkward’ quality to some scenes. For example, Niko’s shoes being eaten by acid resulting in her having to be piggy-backed a long distance. It makes me appreciate her characters more. They’re heroic AND human.
Niko/Harm and her supporting cast are a fantastic crew. I thoroughly enjoy the diverse world and also, the view from ‘below’ (the outsiders looking and working their way in).
My one bug bear in Harm is that some events are revealed and I believed there should have been more foreshadowing in the lead up to it. It would have enhanced some of the deeper mysteries that are emerging and will be important as the series continues.
In saying that, this series is highly recommended. I can’t wait to read it to its completion. I’ve romped through the first two books and will be soon onto the third.
Harm is the fast-paced, thoroughly engrossing second installment in Kayti Nika Raet's The Outsider Chronicles and picks up right where Niko left off, leading readers through the stressful twists and turns of Niko's journey after her narrow escape from Amaryllis City. Traveling with Ben and her brother, with hopes of making it to Ben's hometown of Cherai City, the trio encounter all sorts of obstacles along the way, before arriving at the city gates, only to be turned away without a thought when they fail to produce the entry fee. Deciding their best chance to get inside is to split up, Niko goes it alone on the outside, traversing the slums, encountering evil gangs, unscrupulous boot-sellers (trust me, you need some boots!) and finally meeting Songhay, a mysterious boy with some serious fighting skills. Songhay saves Niko, now calling herself Harm, from a rather horrible situation and together with Songhay's sister, Roosevelt, the trio learn to (kind of) trust one another and survive.
As exciting and unique as the first installment in the series, Niko, I especially enjoyed Harm because of the character Songhay. He is the one person in Niko's life who seems to soften her a bit, humanize her in ways that not even her brother, Jared, can. I have no idea whether Songhay will play a more important role in Niko's journey, but I do appreciate his ability to get under Niko's skin and show us another side of her, something besides her usual cold, calculated and very controlled self. (And I know Niko needs to be cold and calculated to survive this deadly landscape of acid rain, Slithers and corrupt individuals at every corner, but it's nice to see there is someone with whom she can let her guard down and genuinely smile, even if it's only for a moment.)
As with Niko, Harm is action-packed, full of exciting fight scenes, witty banter and general feats of Niko-badassery. Fans of the first book will not be disappointed with Harm, as Raet continues weaving her web of intrigue around Niko. This original, engrossing, quick read takes you on one hell of a ride, leaving you wondering what secrets book three will uncover and expose, hoping Niko's soul can survive them.
Book 2 is just as awesome as the first! In some series, sometimes book 1 is super good but then book 2 is kinda blah, but it is not the case with this series. We have a new adventure with new characters introduced that you will definitely love right away. There are also some reveals that were surprising and some twists as well. We still have Niko kicking butt and killing Slithers and we have a few of the old characters as well. Niko is a very strong character, I really love that the author made her the way she is but even though she is tough you can still see some of the girl in her that comes out. I have to say I am really conflicted with Songhay because I love him but do I want Ben for Niko or do I want Songhay? And I know what is going to happen to Ben and I am going to cry because I am really invested, I really like him, he is so good for Niko. But so is Songhay, the author is killing me here... I'm kind of hoping that something happens, some twist so that we can fix Ben. Oh and I must say that I do love the cover on this one, I even know what part of the story is this. Really great cover! Looking forward to reading the next one in the series. The end left me wanting more. If you want to read a great story with great characters and a kick@ss main character then this is the story for you but make sure to read book one first or you will be lost.
The action intensifies, and the intrigue builds in this second installment of the Outsider Chronicles. After the events in NIKO, she, her brother Jared, and fellow slither hunter Ben arrive at Cherai, a city that is as opulent as it is oppressive. Niko, going under the alias of Harm, is forced to remain Outside while Ben and her brother buy passage into the city. We meet a few new characters--Songhay and Roosevelt, whom I both loved. Roosevelt for her dry humor and Songhay for his cocky arrogance. Ms. Raet weaves this second tale masterfully, and she takes us from the heart of the slums to the eerie decadence of Cherai. There are some few creepy twists and turns, which I can't talk about without spoiling, but if you loved NIKO, read HARM as soon as virtually possible. You won't be disappointed.
First to recap: Niko, her brother Jared, and her sort-of-boyfriend Ben live in a futuristic world where natural water is highly acidic and there are scary, people-eating monsters called Slithers that everyone has to constantly hide from. Only certain people have the abilities, e.g. increased speed and reflexes, to attack and kill Slithers. The catch? Those people will eventually become Slithers themselves, and the early signs of this transformation are eyes that flicker between human and monster. Niko, however, is a special type of person that can kill Slithers but doesn't show any signs of becoming one herself.
In this world everyone wants to live in a city, because cities have safe water and provide protection from Slithers. Niko and Ben have just escaped from Amaryllis City where they were part of a Slither-hunting group called the Rose Circle. Along with Jared, they are now travelling to Cherai City in an attempt to hide from the Council in Amaryllis who want to trap Niko and use her as a test subject.
When they get to Cherai City they find out that they can only pay for 2 people to get in, and the third will have to wait in the slums outside the city. Ben used to live in Cherai City and has never been an "Outsider" (someone who doesn't live in a city), and Jared isn't trusted to be left alone without supervision, so that leaves Niko to survive outside until they can find a way to get her into the city. She quickly meets and befriends a boy named Songhay and his sister Roosevelt, and after seeing the destruction that Slithers bring to the unprotected Outsiders she decides to find people with flickering eyes and form a ragtag group of Slither hunters, teaching them how to defend themselves. That is, until a disaster forces her to stop waiting for Ben and Jared and find her own way into Cherai city.
I gave this book 4 stars because the beginning and ending were pretty abrupt, and the story moved at a very fast pace. It throws you into the action without any recap from the first book, so it took me a second to remember everything that had happened and what they were doing. Then during the story I sometimes felt like I was getting whiplash because everything was happening so quickly.
But everything else was fantastic. I loved the new characters, I loved how we learn more about Niko's back story, and I loved the new settings. Cherai City is pretty different from Amaryllis, and seeing their society from a different point of view really added more depth to this world. There definitely wasn't a dull moment, and I honestly wasn't expecting the twist at the end of the book. I don't really know what else to say, other than that this series just keeps getting better and I would recommend it to anyone. Especially because you get hipster bragging rights for reading a book that probably no one has heard of, as well as the chance to support a very talented and wonderful indie author.
Let me start by saying...Niko is my favourite book crush and I don't think it will EVER change! To quote the book; "...awesome... thing ...of awesomeness."
The likes and dislikes: ~The old man and Niko's foot...the H! (There might be a creepy short in there hehehe) ~The fact that every detail of the characters or the settings, weren't repeated like you find in most series, was GREAT! Because come on, if the story is as good as this one, you won't forget these details, because they stay with you and those you forget, don't matter. Kudos to Raet for that! ~Niko's resistance to Ben infuriates the romantic in me - I get her reasoning - but hell that boy better break her wall! With that said; her defensiveness when asked if he is her boyfriend... - *evil laugh* - ...you're getting close, Ben. ~There was a part that crossed over to a memory and while it worked okay, I wished it was more distinguishable, as I had to go back to make sure I wasn't missing something. ~The fight was awesome! I really would have loved to read a flashback or something about one of Songhay's fights, just to get that little something more. ~Songhay kissing Niko (shush, I like the 'romance') was an auw moment, but confused me as I feel a love triangle forming and I hate choosing sides. ~Malik in the dream...*ugly crying* ~The pace was once more spot on; no unnecessary lingering. There were a few moments I thought; 'I hope something happens soon' (I get easily distracted), but then bam! I was sucked back into a sleepless night of finishing the book. ~The Grey-men quarters and area or whatever, I wanted a little more detail around that, but it is still enough to work. ~Niko's attempts to make Jared be a 'good' boy, are so funny, especially when she realises the reason why he isn't. ~The suggestion over what to do with the girl (spy) had me giggling. ~The kiss with Ben...oh gosh! I was swooning and yelling hell yeah and freaking the hell out. Loved it more than is good for me, but Niko killed my buzz a little...still love her though.
Notes on characters: Niko - It is Niko, opinions don't matter, she is badass. Ben - *swooning* Jared - He is a cool 'kid' and he is a great character to show that in THIS world being a kid is not even close to the 'privileged' life we mostly have. Jorge is a good example as well. Songhay - Why aren't real guys as hot as he is in my mind? Roosevelt - She is a little monkey like Songhay, which is pretty cute. And she is so funny; has to be my favourite character in the book. Eva - I hope to read a little more of her.
The ending... Keep calm, punch a pillow and then read the next book. This was one hell of a book and I recommend the series to anyone...no matter what you are into, this actually has it all!
Title: A Sequel that will not Disappoint “Harm: The Outsider Chronicles Book Two” by Kayti Nika Raet
Reviewed by V 10/22/2015 10:03 p.m.
After narrowly escaping Amaryllis City, Niko and her small group must find a safe haven. Now venturing with her younger brother, Jared and Ben, they begin their search for Ben’s hometown. This plan, however, does not go as desired and Niko loses Ben in the chaos. Staying strong and pushing on as we know this heroine to do, Niko, who now goes by Harm, meets a new comrade: Songhay. Together, they fight off slithers, and continue their journey of survival in the twisted place that is now the world.
Picking up right where Niko left off, Harm is a thrilling follow up to the first book in the Outsider Chronicles. It will not disappoint. The new characters introduced are extremely likable, and well developed. Songhay brings out a side of Niko that we have not seen yet. He breaks through her strong, cold exterior and humanizes her in a way that was much needed. It was nice to see someone that she could finally let her guard down with.
The action scenes are just as compelling, if not more so, than the first novel. Packed with action, drama, tragedy, and even a bit of romance as a new love triangle begins to form. The banter between Niko and Jared will have you smiling. Once again, I must point out the connection to the Hunger Games saga- if you liked that series you must read the Outsiders Chronicles. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this book. Raet really out did herself this time. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Niko, her brother Jared, and Ben, escpae from Amaryllis City to find refuge in the Black City. But as it’s obvious together the three of them won’t get in, Ben stays behind, Outside. While Niko pleads with him, it’s no use, and she ends up going inside on her own. No sooner does she get inside, or she’s attacked. A young thief named Songhay comes to her rescue, and his fighting skills impress her enough to tag after him. He introcues her to his sister, Roosevelt.
Niko and Songhay grow closer to each other, forming a band of Slither hunters and trying to free the slums from their continuous presence. But when Niko thinks life is finally settling down, an unexpected secret from her past comes back to haunt.
I loved Songhay. He’s fun, charismatic, confident, and even a little bit goofy, which is quite a feat considering the dire circumstances they find themselves in. I also liked Roosevelt. She has a lot of guts, courage, and she’s also quite intelligent. It was great how she and Songhay started calling Niko “Harm” almost right away, as if they’d known her for years. They also treated her like family.
There’s definitely a lot of dystopian stuff going on, but there’s also a hand of fantasy and mystery that made it even more intriguing for me. The Slithers were cool monsters to battle too.
Harm came as a pleasant surprise. The writing is pretty good as well. Definitely looking forward to the next part in the series.
Harm is the second installment in The Outsider Chronicles and it is just as good as the first, maybe even better. The struggles that Niko finds herself overcoming is believable and astounding at the same time.
Since the trio of Ben, Niko and Jared only have enough money for two of them to enter the city, Ben and Jared go ahead while Niko enters the slums to survive. After a group of thugs pick a fight with Niko, Songhay swoops in to save her. She joins Songhay and his sister Roosevelt and they survive together.
During this time, Raet introduces us to a whole new set of characters that Niko integrates with and quite frankly, I enjoy Songhay and Roosevelt better than Ben and his group. These people are good people surviving on the outside and not taking anything for granted.
Niko continues to learn about her past and about her parents, and discovers things that I hadn't seen coming and that surely Niko didn't. Niko is challenged not only on a survival level but also on an emotional level.
I really enjoyed this book because we were able to see Niko's personality soften a bit and see a more compassionate side to her. The cold and calculating Niko is still there and will always need to be there in order for her to survive.
Harm is filled with action packed adventure and is fast paced. This book will keep you engrossed from start to finish. The characters are well developed and easily enjoyable. The descriptions from the author are placed well and are detailed enough to paint a picture in my head.
I gobbled this book up in a single afternoon. Yup, it was like that. The second novel in The Outsider Chronicles is a fast paced, action-packed ride through the Outside - "where the rain burns like acid and flesh eating monsters roam." The story picks up with Niko, Ben and Jared having escaped Amaryllis City. We are quickly introduced to Songhay and Roosevelt, as well as the tall, barb-wired city of Cherai City.
We get more insight into the gritty, tired lives of the Grey-men - Outsider volunteer-workers who are chosen to service those living freely in Cherai City. Through out this story, Kayti takes us deeper into the trials and tribulations of the Outsiders - their fears and their hopes - without allowing the reader to pity them. It's a well written and clearly well planned out journey.
Reader's of the first book in the series, Niko, know that Kayti's writing style is sharp and cuts quick. Not one to waste words, Harm starts of strong and continues its rapid clip until the end. Lovers of science fiction and fantasy will enjoy the slithers (though they aren't a major player in this book). And though this tome was light on romance, readers will enjoy the build-up of tension between Songhay, Niko and Ben - another escapee from Amaryllis City.
I give Harm 4 stars, for it's fast paced storyline and sharp storytelling. I'll be happily diving into Outsider (Book 3) and the recently released Monster (book 4).
Harmony Nico is in search of her brother Jared, lost since the first chapter of the first book, Nico. Now known as Harm, she leaves the safety of Amaryllis City behind and travels through the acid-scarred wilderness to the nearby refuge of Cherai, which is not only walled but has a dome under construction. But things are tough all over. Like Amaryllis, Cherai is difficult to get into, and the Have-Nots (called Outsiders) live in slum neighborhoods outside the walls.
Outside the walls, the Outsiders are in danger not just from the rain and shortage of drinking water, but also from the zombie-like Slithers. Fortunately, Harm is a skilled Slither hunter. A sort of makeshift family of poor kids, headed by the strong, fatherly Songhay and his "sister," the spunky Roosevelt, gladly take her in. Then they conspire to get into the city and find Jared, who they believe has escaped to safety there.
The hard labor in Cherai is performed by the Grey-Men, who if they can live long enough, gradually earn the right to live there permanently. Harm becomes a Grey-Man--the term is gender neutral here, BTW--and then things get interesting. The grueling poverty and nastiness of Book One gets even worse here. Frankly I'd rather pick apples in District 11 with Rue than be a Grey-Man in the Outsider Chronicles.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. Stop by Shh I am Reading to read more reviews like this.
Niko was one of my favourite reads ever and Harm quickly follows up with that claim. The author has quite the skill in world-building, creating a world that is so terrifyingly believable and creating characters who are real and relatable.
Niko adopts a shortened version of her real name, Harm and becomes one with it as she hides out in the slums of Cherai City, where acid is a real problem, like fall in and never get up again problem. She meets a thief by the name of Songhay who is trying to earn enough money to get his sister Roosevelt past the gates and out of that life.
I really like Songhay. He made the bad-ass soften a little. While Niko was still full bad-ass Slither hunter, she seems to really like Songhay too. To be honest, I'm more for Songhay than Ben, myself. Songhay has a humble side to him that Ben lacks, personally. And then there is Roosevelt. All sass and knows it too. She added great personality to the book.
Book 2 left me wondering what was going to happen with Niko as some truths were revealed. But I absolutely look forward to the next book!
I read Book One and Book Two of the Outlander Series in one sitting. Book One focused on Niko, and Book 2 explored more of the Outlander world where it rains acid and monsters can pounce on you at any time. I can’t get the picture of bones decaying in acid and then being stepped on by people wearing rubber boots out of my mind. What I liked Kayti’s writing style is beautiful. It’s full of metaphors and similes that will either melt your heart or make you squirm with disgust. I’ve never seen the power of language used with such evil intentions. This is a good thing because at its core Niko is a horror. The flow of the story. Niko had a goal from the get go, so there was always tension in the background. It briefly explored polygamous relationships.
What I didn’t like There were slow parts in both books, but the action more than made up for it. It kinda seemed like Book 2 was more of a transition book for Book 3, which I’m reading as soon as Book 4 is released so that I can read them both in one Niko binge. So yeah. If you’re looking for a new series to read, this is the one. Books 1-3 are now available now. Book 4: Monster is available for pre-order here.
OH NIKO! What's going on?!?!?!?!? You got me all twisted and nervous. LOL.
Kayti Nika Raet does it again and wrote another action packed intense book. The world building in this series is pretty unique which I truly enjoyed. Niko is just a great character that I think most people will like. I just think she is pretty bad a$$. I love that she kicks butt and is her own person. She does love and still has her humanity even after going through some $hit. Honestly, she's one of my favorite heroines in literary fiction. Harm is a really good follow up to book one and doesn't suffer from the sophomore slump at all. I would recommend this series for those looking for a good dystopian read and want to read something different.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
I was hooked after reading the first book. Shortly after beginning this book I became obsessed. It has a unique storyline which is different from the first book. New characters were introduced Songhay and Roosevelt. I am fascinated by them. I thought I was team Ben but I'm leaning towards team Songhay. Roosevelt is snarky and sassy. She is definitely a light in this very dark world. Niko is strong and complex. She continues to show how many layers this character has. I'm addicted and can't wait to start the next book of the series.
The second book in the series is great, fast-paced, and with vivid scenes and compelling characters. The action-driven plot involves the reader through the adventures of Niko, in a world of acid rain and slithers. A great read with diverse characters, thrilling suspense, and some tongue in cheek wit.
Harm picks up, right where Niko left off. There's some new (& awesome) characters to get to know. It sucked me right in, & left me excited for more. The pace is quick, & the writing is engaging. This series is amazing!
This is the second book in author Kayti Nika Raet's dystopian trilogy about a young woman struggling to survive in a very dangerous world. It's a world where acid rain falls from the skies, where even touching the ground with your bare skin can lead to death, and where humanoid Slithers roam the land eager to kill - and then eat - unwary humans. Niko - a rare human with the ability to kill Slithers - has escaped from Amaryllis City with her brother and a friend at the end of the first book. In this novel that are making their way to a new city where they encounter gangs and grifters before learning that only two of them can afford to enter. Niko - who has adopted the nickname Harm as a means of trying to stay under the radar - volunteers to stay Outside the city while her brother and friend enter. It's a dangerous decision but, because of her abilities and the fact that she has lived most of her life Outside the walls of Amaryllis City, she believes she is more capable of surviving in the slummy conditions that either her brother or friend. She's right, but that doesn't mean her life is going to be any picnic and it's not long before she is trying desperately to stay alive. Unlike the first book in the series, "Harm" is not as lyrical as "Niko." The plot is well imagined and the narrative remains strong but missing are those almost poetic turns of phrase that make "Niko" a delight to read. "Harm" also suffers from some editing issues: Missing words, occasional misuse of words ("their" for "there," for example) and other mistakes slow down the narrative. That's a shame because "Harm" contains all the elements of a top-flight novel; strong characters, a well-thought-out world, and enough mystery to keep the reader guessing.
