Gaul was divided into three parts. No, four parts - for one small village of indomitable Gauls still held out against the Roman invaders. BOOK 17 A multinational team of slave construction workers are to clear the forest around the Gaulish village and build a modern housing development forcing the villagers to take swift action to protect themselves against the Roman newcomers.
René Goscinny (1926 - 1977) was a French author, editor and humorist, who is best known for the comic book Asterix, which he created with illustrator Albert Uderzo, and for his work on the comic series Lucky Luke with Morris (considered the series' golden age).
This time, the Gaules must face one more threat from Caeser. He plans to raze down the forest and build a new roman city by the village in hopes of stopping the resistance against their invasion. This story is quite different, since the Gaules actually end up fighting with each other a lot. Some immediately take up Roman customs and others wish the Romans would leave them be. In a way it speaks about colonialism and how resisting against it is important to preserve our culture.
What I like about the story is that Asterix and Obelix did not have to leave the village for this adventure, it came to their forest. The interactions between the "barbarians" and the relocated Romans are hilarious and the comic twists throughout the book are lots of fun.
