When Tara Blankenship's writing assignment takes her to an "eco village" on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, she anticipates a quiet couple of weeks in a quaint setting. (She's far too mature to use the word boring, thank you very much.) What she stumbles into is anything but quiet and quaint.Someone has been slaughtering livestock to scare the villagers, mysterious intruders are searching the property at night, and Tara finds a grisly welcome-warning on the porch of her guest cottage. To top it off, the surly neighbor nearly runs her off the road on her first day. Why are the handsome ones always such jerks?Malcolm Ashcroft is the last person a sane woman would want to deal with, but he may be the only one with the key to solving the mystery--and giving Tara the story of her career. Of course... he might also be the man behind all the trouble.
Mushrooms. How can a book about mushrooms keep you engaged and entertained? Somehow Buroker makes it happen. Tara is a girly girl - she drives a pink convertible, wears lavender nail polish and likes living in the city. But for the summer she's out on the Olympic Peninsula at an eco village to write about living in a sustainable community. But almost immediately she runs into trouble in the form of the village's hunky neighbor who is currently feuding with the village. And someone is leaving dead animals around the village and wandering in the forest at night looking for something.
This was a light, fun read - I enjoyed the characters and their interactions. The plot was fun - complete with Buroker's traditional explosions that her fans have come to love. I enjoyed every minute of this and found myself giggling through several parts. And I even learned about mushrooms!
Another book by Lindsay Buroker that grabbed me on the very first page with its well written characters and fast paced action.
Mushrooms are rarely the subject matter of mysteries, but this novel proves they are not as dull as some might think. When you add a firefighter with a tough past and a rather free spirited journalist/blogger to the mix the combination is ... rather combustible.
A very enjoyable read that only had one bad thing about it: it was impossible to put it down! (And it WOULD be nice to see what the main characters get around to doing next)
The author describes this as a rom-com, and that's as good a description as any. It's superficially an action mystery, but the romance is the core of it and also the part that works most effectively. If I tell you that the mystery part involves ruthless and evil - erm, mushroom researchers who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on a particularly rare specimen which will cure antibiotic resistent TB, you'll probably get the point.
The plot (such as it is) involves heroine Tara making a temporary stay at an eco-village to produce blog material for a local newspaper. She arrives in the middle of a dispute with a neighbour involving escaped pigs and decapitated chickens. The neighbour, naturally, is a hunky heap of muscular maleness, called Malcolm (after the Scottish king; hurray for Scottish kings!). Tara manages to exploit her blogging and website building skills to impress said hunky heap, but thereby finds herself sucked into the ongoing adventures, which involves much racing around hillsides in the dark, climbing out of bathroom windows and the like, while the hunky heap manages to get his shirt off at frequent intervals.
All this is fun if not terribly surprising. Nor is Tara herself a particularly plausible character. Although she's smart enough to set up websites in the blink of an eye, she's apparently not smart enough to bring along anything useful on a police-evading night-time chase, even when she stops at her own house along the way. Plus she trips over every tree-root in the state, seemingly, and ends up face down in the mud. I have to confess, I like just a tad more competence in a main character.
As for the hunky heap, he's got demons from his past to deal with, and, wouldn't you just know it, the climax of the book involves him having to face up to those demons. I realise there's a school of thought that requires characters to move forwards during the course of the story, making visible progress in the demons department, but frankly this was all just too contrived for my liking. A little more subtlety would have helped.
On the other side of the coin, the romance works really well. The banter between the two main characters is brilliant, and there are some very funny moments along the way. It amuses me to consider the research the author must have carried out for this book, covering (amongs other things) hallucinogenic mushrooms, pipe bombs and the feasability of operating a mobile phone using only your nose (and I'd have paid good money to watch the experimentation on that one). Apart from Tara's tree-root incompetence, the two main characters are well drawn. The gradual inching from deep suspicion through grudging tolerance to tentative trust and the inevitable romantic entanglement is perfectly judged, and completely credible. For anyone who likes their romance sweet rather than hot, with plenty of light-hearted action and a great big dollop of humour, this is ideal. Three stars.
When Tara Blankenship's boss sends her to spend a few weeks writing about life in an eco village on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, the last thing she expects is to be greeted by tales of slaughtered livestock found around the village and a cranky neighbour who nearly runs her off the road as she arrives and appears to have a bitter feud going on with the village. The villagers suspect he is behind the grisly animal carcasses, but Tara soon finds that the truth lies somewhere else altogether.
In a departure from her usual fantasy and science fiction adventures, Lindsay Buroker here tries her hand at a mixture of rom-com and romantic suspense. I had trouble getting into this short novel and staying interested as the story went on. Usually I tend to love her books, but this one just didn't really draw me in, perhaps simply because it's not a genre I care for all that much.
I was a bit surprised to see this author wrote an urban romance, and normally, that's not my kind of thing, but I like this author, so grabbed this one, and found it to be quite amusing.
Amazing! My biggest gripe about romances is the very clichéd way things progress and the whole thing doesn't feel very realistic. But this book portrays romance the way it happens in real life - the way love sneaks upon you when you are busy doing your thing. Add to that the most original premise for a love story I have ever read, lovable characters who don't take themselves too seriously and writing that drags you in and keeps you there and you have the makings of a truly great read.
This is one author who needs to write more romances. I have realised that fantasy/paranormal/UF authors - like Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs and, now, Lindsay Buroker - do romance in a way that even the critics of the romance genre would enjoy.
Lindsay, I really enjoyed all your fantasy novels and I hope you write more romance as well. I will follow you into any genre you choose to write in.
It was refreshing to read a contemporary mystery from Lindsay Buroker. Despite the change in setting like her other books, this one is filled with adventure, mystery and a little romance.
However this book lacks the charm, depth and humor of her AU fantasy series. I still appreciate Ms. Buroker's effort though and I like that it's set in my home state. 3.5 stars.
I have followed Lindsay Buroker's books for several years. Her work never becomes boring as she always comes up with something new. The setting and time of "Wounded" are current, an eco village in Washington.
The main character, Tara Blankenship, is a blogger who takes an assignment to work at the eco village and post daily blogs. While she expects this assignment to be slow, her visit turns out to be anything but boring. Along the way, she is attracted to a man who is keeping secrets and risks her own life trying to bring resolution to the village.
I read everything by Lindasy, and have for years. This is different than her usual writing style or theme, but it is an excellent read!
Tara Blankenship takes a job on Washington's Olympic Peninsula to work in an eco village and blog about it. Her first day she encounters her rude neighbor and a mutilated chicken. Tara doesn't let his gruff exterior stop her from getting to know her neighbor, Malcolm Ashcroft, who is not part of the eco-village.
I saw that Ms. Buroker normally does fantasy. That is not a genre I read very much but I saw this one and thought I'd try it since I love romantic suspense/mystery. It was more of a light suspense but I did like it. I may even try some of her fantasy books someday.
This story is a change of pace for Lindsay Buroker. Most of her stories are contemporary fantasy, Steampunk Fantasy or Science Fiction, This is a Romantic Comedy and a Mystery. It contains several traits that appear in most of her books however, a smart mouthed, inquisitive female lMC, a grumpy and somewhat befuddled male MC and a host of other whacky characters. It is amusing, highly entertaining and contains enough action to keep the reader enthralled.
While I know it's not your usual genre's, the characters are well developed. I would love to see further adventures of Tara & Malcolm. After they become a couple and things are looking good, and bang a big disruption. I read this practically non-stop in just over one day. Everyone should love this book. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship.
Another entertaining read from Lindsay Buried. I am a huge fan , I think I have read most of this author's work. This is a nice change of pace and I enjoyed it immensely. A.bit of a mystery that keeps you hooked and the simmer of potential romance. Some sassy dialogue always adds to the appeal of story.
Another thrilling adventure from Lindsay, but here on earth and in contemporary times. Still a wonderfully written story full of wit and danger. It doesn’t matter which off her books you pick up, the ride is always great.
Despite being slightly different to Lindsay’s normal fantasy worlds this still held all her wonderful writing style and quirky humour. Well developed characters and story. My favourite author
A switch of genre for Lindsay but an excellent story. I enjoyed the action and the twists and turns. The romance was sweet and had a laugh or two at some of the lines. Great book😁
Definitely different from Buroker usual but still good as you expect.Set near Port Angeles ,Washington in one of the most beautiful places in the country. A geeky woman has found either a broken hearted man or a murderer. She's not sure.
I enjoyed this novel as I do all of Lindsay broker's tales. I have read nearly everything I can find that she's written. Wish there were more of this character duo...it was a fun read.
I liked this as much Buroker's fantasy work. It was reminicent of Elizabeth Peters--a good fun read for a Saturday afternoon. It would be fun to see her do a few more of these stand-alone novels.
Nice short story, what one would expect from Lindsay,,good break before I start another of her long stories, start reading her books and you will be spoiled
I really enjoyed this book by Lindsay Buroker. It was an interesting change from her usual fantasy style, but as always she has great quirky characters that draw you in.
