The Lightning Wastes

Rate this book
***What follows is a small collection of short stories set in the universe of the Traveler’s Gate Trilogy, which begins in the novel House of Blades. If you have not read House of Blades, or its sequel, The Crimson Vault, then you will not understand the stories in this collection.***

In the first story, The Lightning Wastes, Leah hires a familiar bodyguard to help her recruit some wayward Travelers of Endross.

In the second story, Caverns of Flame, a young Traveler-in-training is faced with a rival he can't beat and a test he can't pass.

In the final story, Ragnarus, the first Queen of Damasca gives her life fighting the Incarnation of Elysia.

***This collection is intended to give fans of the Traveler's Gate Trilogy a look into the Travelers and Territories that didn't quite make it into the novels. If you're happy with the amount of world-building in the novels, and you'd rather wait until you can find out what happens to Simon, that's perfectly fine! City of Light is coming in early 2014.***

Phenomenal job

Such a wonderful addition to the House of Blades canon. Your Simon/Leah story kind of read like fan fiction, heh, but it was right on with the characterizations. The other two were pure pleasures to read, insightful as well as advancing plot points. Tell me you're not really going to give up this world after the trilogy is complete? Your fans' hearts will bleed!

**spoilers, for my own records**

Oh. Shit. That last short story!! A bit of a back story around the first hanging trees / sealing the incarnations. Rhalia (alin's guide in Elysia) was the Elysian incarnation all along!! But got trapped in Elysia by Cynara, the first Ragnarus queen. I wonder if Rhalia tricked Alin into becoming an incarnation? But I thought there couldn't be two incarnations? Hmm... And then The Old Man (who is he?) tricked Cynara into becoming an incarnation... And then she sealed herself into the tree. And later, when she was released (in 2nd book of series) she passed it on to the dying king???

This series is well worth reading as it fleshes out the Traveler's Gate series beautifully.

After reading all of the Traveler's Gate Chronicle short stories, here's what I have to say. Most of them are great - giving some extra insight into the territories and characters I loved so much in the books. The biggest complaint (if you could call it that) that I have, is that they're just not enough. Reading these stories has made me desperately want more full length novels. The content of this world is so unique and plentiful, I'm sure that the author could write a novel about each territory - or about each character. I tip my cap to Mr. Wight for creating such an engaging world that yearns to be experienced. I am not sure if he is planning on additional Traveler's Gate books, but I will keep my fingers crossed and continue to hope that one gets written.

While these short stories were not as good as the main series, it is a nice way to jump back in and experience the world, albeit briefly. Looking forward to more from this author in the future.

In some respects, these three novella entries into the Traveler's Gate world are better than the actual novels (which /are/ good). Across the three, they detail an individual Territory's traveler, and an experience within said Territory that builds the worlds of them and shows the virtues/vices/powers of that Territory... for each of the core territories. The sum of the three is a short novel of pure, unadulterated worldbuilding, and the most Sandersonian I've seen Wight get thus far. These were /very/ good reads - so long as one's already read the core trilogy

It's hard to write reviews for really short stories, even collections of them. Suffice it to say that if you like the Traveler's Gate series then you will like these short stories, vignettes if you will, that add to the colorful fabric of this world. If you haven't read the series then you're missing out but the Chronicles aren't the place to start. I really enjoyed all three of these collections of stories and hope happens in this world soon.

Another good collection of stories, though I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed with the Simon and Leah story. It's not that I minded seeing how Simon and Leah were doing and what they're relationship looked like, but these other stories are just so interesting that I felt like we missed an opportunity to see the life of someone else.

Interesting read. It was great to read about the territories from different perspectives, although I really enjoyed the story about Leah.
