I want nothing but to escape the bitterness and emptiness surrounding me....
I'm, Olivia Rey, a product of an unwanted pregnancy and since that day forward my world has not beeneasy. My mother's anger at not being able to hold on to my 'father' made her lash out all her hatred and venom at me growing up. So, I did the only thing I could to survive, I enclo...sed my heart until I can be in the light.
All I want is to be surrounded in darkness to not feel...
I'm, Phoenix Ryan, I have lived a life of privilege with no boundaries making me feel invincible. Then when I was on a high, tragedy came crashing down on me and cast me into a world where I was left numb. So I did the only thing I could to survive I enclosed my heart, so I could walk into the darkness.
Will theses two guarded hearts eclipse into each other to find love, or will they be forever guarded.
The cover was what drew me in first drew me in to the book. After reading blurb I knew this book, was going to be a book a loved. As soon as I read the prologue I was completly hooked and I knew this was going to be a outstanding book. The book is about 2 people finding love when neither ever thought they would and have give up on the idea of love. The story follows Nix and Olivia. They are both in college. Olivia is the president of her sorority. She is pretending to be somebody she is not, a party girl and the live and soul of the party. When in reality this isn't Olivia at all. Nix is at the college also. He's a DJ there. He is all trying to just get through life each day at a time to try and forget his past and forget everything in his past. Olivia grew up knowing that she was a unwanted child. Oliver's mother never let a day go by when she didn't have her mothers anger thrown her way about everything that was wrong with her mothers life. Olivia took all her mothers abuse daily and did all she could to survive before she could leave her was to shut her heart up from the light and that means never letting anything or anyone new come near her again so she never has to hurt again. Reading about Olivia's start to life was utterly heartbreaking. Reading scenes like that, when you are a mum yourself, breaks your heart. As a mother I can't understand how anyone could ever treat their child like that, verbally or physical abuse them or just not love your child. Reading about this tore my heart to pieces. Nix (Phoenix) grew up very differently to Olivia. He was bought up in a happy life, with privileges, no boundaries and he felt he could do anything because he felt invincible.that was until a huge tragedy happened and blew his world apart. He was left numb, hurt, being blamed and so closed his heart off as well that he shut his heart off to fro the hurt and everyone and thing around him. Both characters are totally broken. They both are holding so much guilt. I admired Olivia for wanting to make something of her life and become something, despite what her mother ever said to her. I admired her grit and determination. Nix just wanted to hide and change what had happened but can't and is still learning to cope. Both characters fall hard for each other but neither feel they deserve love, or deserve each other. It was a emotional journey watching them going this journey if healing together. It takes along time a lot of very emotional scenes of them before anything happens and feeling are admitted. Your defintly go on a roller coaster of emotions reading this book. I could never guess if they would end up together or if they'd both get there happy ever after because of how damaged they both were. I'd love to say so much more about the book, but I don't want to give away spoilers as you need to read this from going in blind without any preconceived ideas about anything or any body to get the true heartbreaking journey of healing. A great book. 4.5 stars
Wow! What an amazing book. This is one of those books that pulls at all of your emotions and heartstrings before bringing it all back in and wrapping it up with a pretty bow. This book was beautifully written and flowed well. Don't let the length fool you... this book packs quite a bunch. I laughed. I smiled. I cried. I frowned. I got angry. Right from the beginning, this book pulled me and didn't let me go until the end. This author is new to me and this definitely won't be my last.
This is Nix and Olivia's story. Olivia has grown up in a bad situation. Growing up being abused emotionally and physically, all she wants is to be free of the present and look forward to a bright future. She gets this by going to college. Leaving for college, she has no idea that what she wants is going to happen in ways she could never imagine. On her carefully planned road to find herself and rise above her past, her guarded heart is in danger when she meets Nix. Like Olivia, Nix is dealing with his past and it has shaped who he is today. He too has his heart guarded, not wanting to let anyone in. Can Olivia and Nix learn to trust again and love? Can these two damaged souls find forgiveness and redemption? With the obstacles they face, is it possible for Nix and Olivia to find their happy ending?
I loved both Olivia and Nix in this story. They were perfect for each other. I loved how their relationship didn't feel forced and naturally developed between them. I loved how they learned to trust and love. They learned to open their hearts again. It is always beautiful to watch two damaged people find healing in each other and that was them.
I absolutely fell in love with the Synopsis of, Guarded Hearts, and was ecstatic to received a copy in return for a honest review. Despite falling for the Synopsis, I was totally blown away by the Prologue of this book. The prologue focuses on, Nix, the main male character, and how tragedy has moulded him into the man he would later become. Such a powerful and emotional start to what would prove to be a great story. The story then moves on to tell you the awful start Olivia had in life, and her determination to become someone other than her mothers mirror image. I was hooked on the story of Livi and Nix, and I often found myself a teary eyed emotional wreck, grabbing for the box of tissues. First there was Livi, who wanted to escape her dreadful life and upbringing, to become someone or something. But, more importantly...to be loved. Then there was Nix, who wanted to hide from his life and demons that darkened it. Lived everyday full of guilt and regret. Wishing he could change what was done. Hoping the guilt would lessen...but it doesn't. There was a point in the story where I could have marked down my star rating, As I found myself becoming bored with the characters constantly saying how they felt about each other. But, that was my personal pet peeve and no reflection on the writing or story at all. This feeling didn't last long at all, and I was soon sucked right back in. Enjoying every bit of the emotional roller coaster that this story was. I'd loooooove to give more away, but that would just spoil it for everyone. So, I will just say that I absolutely loved this book, and highly recommend a read.
This is a story about two people finding love when they had given up on the idea.
Olivia never knew love. Her mother blamed her for her father wanting nothing to do with either of them and abused her all throughout her life. There was never a day that went by that she wasn't told she was worthless, etc. The only thing that got her through her childhood was her best friend Mandy and her family. But even then, there was a constant void in Olivia's heart. A void that was put there by her mother.
Nix thought his heart was forever broken. It wasn't a girl that broke it however, as you may assume. No, it was his own reckless behavior that caused the death of his best friend, Sky.
Olivia and Nix are both in college. Olivia is the president of her sorority, pretending to be the party college girl even though that's not who she is and Nix is a DJ.
Once they let their guards down and get to know one another, sparks fly.
It's not happily ever after yet though. Something happens that not only breaks Olivia but will have you staring at the page in shock and awe.
Will their love overcome such a shock? Is there more to the story then what meets the eye? Will the truth come out? Will Olivia find happily ever after or is she forever broken?
This debut novel is just amazing. The characters are flawed and real. The story is both tragic and sad yet somehow uplifting.
I look forward to more from these two ladies as I guarantee they have a great career in front of them!

This book had us from the very first line
” Death doesn’t give you a warning”.
This is Phoenix’s and Olivia’s story.
Meet Phoenix. Studying in college. Works as a DJ at a club, Poison. Keeps to himself, barriers are up. A devastating past which has left him racked with guilt. He will not allow anyone in. He can’t feel, he shouldn’t. He won’t give himself permission too. But why?
Meet Olivia. Studying in college. She’s a part of a sorority house. Educated and beautiful. The social queen. But is that who she really is? A devastating past has given Olivia a goal, but will she lose her identity by reaching it? Why is she so afraid to feel? Afraid to love?
Guarded Hearts is a novel about how we can overcome our pasts, no matter what that entails. It shows us that we can overcome guilt. It shows us that from the ugliest of childhoods, we can learn to feel, to trust, to love.
We found Guarded Hearts an explosive read. At times we found it a hard read. Why? Because at times it was heartbreakingly sad, unbelievably annoying (kindle was going out the window), and breathtakingly beautiful. We laughed, we cried, we got angry. We couldn’t tear ourselves away from it. Each word, sentence, paragraph we were completely absorbed in to it.
Never reading L.A Corvill works before, we are absolutely stoked we were given the opportunity to ARC Guarded Hearts. Overall we give this book 10 out of 10 and highly recommend to be put on your TBR list.
Only because it was a little hard to get into at first. Both of these characters have been through so much and feel as if they don't deserve love. It is sad and the story is amazing to follow as they grow and learn to trust each other. They learn to heal with the help of one another. It is hard to read at times when they are so broken and feel as if they deserve to just suffer in life. As these two grow and start to show the love that is deep inside of them that was so hard to show before, it becomes something that is beautiful and worth all the heart ache that they have been through. Fate has amazing plans for these two.
Olivia pretends to be someone that she is not, she hides behind this. But when Nix comes into her life it is hard to hide herself from him. Nix sees Olivia and knows that his life is never going to be the same.
I want to share so much more, but I don't want to give any spoilers away. But this is really a book that you don't want to miss.. Thank you LA for a wonderful book. I look forward to reading more from you in the future.
Guarded Hearts is an amazing read. I was hooked on this book right from the prologue. I did want to put it down until it was done. It's told in the dual POVs of Nix and Olivia. I love reading books in dual POVs because you can get into both characters heads.
Both Nix and Olivia have had troubles in their past. Nix has had his best friend pass away in a car accident that he survived. We get glimpses of the car accident through Nix. When I was reading the point where we get information on the car accident, I got a little teary eyed. That part is written so well that you can't help but be sad.
Olivia has had a rough childhood. Her mother didn't want her and isn't very nice. Olivia has study hard and go off to college with her best friend Mandy. Olivia is head of her sorority when she meets Nix. She is a master at only letting people see as much of her as she want them to see.
Nix and Olivia have chemistry right away but her party image puts Nix's off a little. Once they get to really know each other there relationship goes great. When they hit a bump, it's a major bump. There is a crazy turn of events that involves Nix and Mandy. Kylie and Tom also play a crazy unthinkable part in the story. This one is a definite one click.
'I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour in exchange for an honest review'
Olivia was the unwanted daughter of an unplanned pregnancy between a maid and her employer. Her mother made her life hell. So she studied hard so she could get a scholarship to college and get out of there. Her best friend did the same thing although she had a better family life then Olivia. Meeting Phoenix was not in Olivia's plans. But she couldn't resist him. But when she faces the ultimate betrayal she may not be able to find it in her to forgive.
Nix loves his family. But he can never forgive himself for mistakes made in his youth. When he first see's Olivia he is done. He knows that he has to have her. When someone that he trusts betrays him in the ultimate way he may just lose Olivia forever.
My Opinion:
Such a GREAT book! It is so easy to connect with the characters and feel what they are feeling. I can honestly say that I teared up a couple times while reading this book. Great concept and very well written. I was hooked on this book right from the start and I could not put it down. The author wrote a very emotional story with very strong characters. I definitely recommend reading.
So I did have some trouble getting into this one at first. It was kind of disjointing in parts and time moved really fast even within just a few paragraphs but once I got about half way through it really picked up!
I really liked both Olivia and Nix. At times they both completely frustrated me and I thought that they were acting irrational or even selfish. But they both have lots of demons to face.
This was definitely a very emotional read with lots of angst and some steamy parts. What started out as a book that I thought I may not like as much as others really surprised me. I'm glad that I stuck it out. It was very deep and heart wrenching at times but a very great read.
I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I read it in a few hours as I couldn't put it down. I felt it was a little disjointed to start with but then I got used to the flow, the timeline also seemed to move incredibly fast.
Olivia has moved away for college to get away from her abusive mother. Not really been a child that was shown any kind of love she guards her heart like nothing on earth. Then she meets Nix. Nix is also very guarded but the connection they both have allows then to let each other in.
This book has it all - friendship, love, betrayal and a little bit of soriety jealousy that has drastic consequences.
I was kindly gifted this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Totally loved the book. Was hooked from the first chapter. Its a very heartwarming story. It focuses on the relationship between Olivia and Nix. Two people who believe they don't deserve to be loved through no fault of their own. They both fall hard and fast and face trials and tribulations during their relationship testing everything they thought they had overcome. Do they have an happily ever after????
Olivia has worked hard for her chance to go to college and leave her past behind. After a rough childhood she packs up her life and heads to college with her best friend Mandy. Soon she has friends, a sorority and good grades, then she meets Nix who has the power to change her world and much like Olivia he has a past that has made him who he is. When life throws unforeseen road blocks at Olivia and Nix can they face the challenges together or will life push them in opposite directions? I liked the characters and the pacing in this story. Olivia is a gritty driven survivor, Mandy is the sweet girl next door, and Nix is trying to atone for his past and make a future for himself. There are twists and turns in this one and that made it all the better.
Wonderful story of two people who have guarded their hearts who meet each other and begin to let each other I in. Olivia has a mother who abused her. Hated her for what she feels she destroyed for her. To deal with this Olivia put her heads in her books, studied and shut off any emotion. As soon as she turned eighteen she left her life and began college. College where she had a plan so she can leave behind her life. And than she meets Nix. Nix who changed his life based on a poor decision that cost him his best friend. Consumed with guilt and a promise to his friend Sky who was lost to that mistake he closes himself off to emotion and changed himself to keep himself from being in any situation that could cause him to make a mistake. He withdrew into himself and let his world become swimming in guilt. And than he meets Olivia. The two have a instant attraction but misunderstandings of who they perceived each other to be kept them from seeing each other for who they were. Once this was overcome, the two began a deep emotional tie in which that got to see who they were. They helped each other begin to heal and open up. They saved each other as they got to see who each other truly was. When they finally became intimate they were bound by hearts that they once guarded from emotions and let each other in. They allowed each other to see each other’s insecurities, fears and pasts. These two will capture your heart as you watch them go from closed off to open up to possibilities to love to hurt and try to close off each other again. Accept only Olivia closes off again Nix can’t go back. He can’t close himself again. He becomes a anchor for some and grows up. How does this hurt come about? Olivia is so wrapped up in herself and her own career goals she doesn’t care to see what is in front of her. She takes Nix reluctance to go with her to something as him not supporting her and a betrayal and cuts him out This causes a chain of reactions and another horrible misunderstanding that gets her cold and hating him and her best friend. She doesn’t care to hear anything because she closes herself off and twists herself into hate. Hate and anger. She allows others to dictate her emotions and goes back into her past thoughts. Others caused this issue but she doesn’t want to listen to her best friend and boyfriend say something isn’t right. Instead she decided they weren’t worthy and cut them out. She let a snake into her life and goes on a self destruction. As the plot that took away everything is unfolded she sees that she let her hate and her past take over. Having lost everything and herself in the process the beginning of healing begins. A story of overcoming your past and guilt to allow something special and beautiful into life. About learning to trust and open yourself up. A sweet and sometimes sad love story that is sweet and kind. Each character is significant in their own way because they play a part in shaping Olivia and Nix’s life. Each character is given emotion and dimension. A story that will have you rooting for a HE A and hope that these two can overcome their pasts to be together.

I got hooked from the beginning to end. I highly enjoyed this read.
Olivia was a girl who got, not just verbally abused but also physically. Her mother disliked her and always blamed her for Olivia's father leaving her. As Olivia started growing up, the abuse ended but then started getting ignored. She preferred the abuse than to get ignored. Olivia didn't have the means to spend or do as she pleased, she lived in a trailer with her mother. She worked hard to earn a scholarship and leave to college and that's exactly what she was looking forward. Leaving her crappy life behind and starting new.
Nix came from a prestigious family, but what he lacked was happiness. He lost his best friend in a terrible car accident and he only blamed himself for it. He felt like he could never be happy and he felt like he didn't deserve it after losing his best friend.
When Nix and Olivia meet, there are sparks that fly and even though they both guard their hearts, they somehow find a way to start opening up to each other and start a relationship. They both start falling in love with each other.
But something unexpected happens that tears them apart. Can these two keep their guard down and not their obstacles get in the way of their love or will continue to keep their hearts guarded?
I really felt something when I read this because when children get abused it breaks my heart. I don't see how people can have children and neglect and abuse them. If you don't want children then you should take precautions in preventing a pregnancy or give the child up for adoption. He/she would probably be better off in a loving home.
When you lose someone is very painful and sometimes you feel like you can't get over that loss. But we can't blame ourselves forever. We need to just forgive ourselves. I know we will never forget, but we have to learn to forgive.
Nix finally finds it in him to forgive and move on. He truly feels alive after meeting Olivia. There was much love in this book and I loved how they both were so guarded at first, but started letting go little by little.
The author did a wonderful job with this book. My only complaint is that I felt it was a little rushed at the end. I think it could have been so much more better than what it was had they taken their time in the end. I still loved how it ended. I am happy that Livi and Nix got their HEA. I just felt like there was a lot more missing that would have made this book better.
Olivia and Nix couldn’t have had more different upbringings. Olivia knew only neglect and abuse as she grew up an unwanted child of a self-centered mother. Nix had a privileged background raised in a caring family but that did not stop him from overindulging in alcohol and drugs. These bad decisions culminated in the worst tragedy of his life.
Olivia had dreams and worked her plan to the letter as she strives to make something of herself. Nix struggled to find purpose as he worked towards atonement. Both were hiding their true selves until they met and realized, despite their struggles, love could be a part of their lives. Circumstances beyond their control brought unfathomable harm and hurt into their lives and tested their love almost to the breaking point.
I really enjoyed this standalone, new adult story. The author painted backgrounds, personalities and realities that brought the characters to life. I could almost feel the barriers that Olivia and Nix held up to the world and cheered as those protective layers slowly lowered. Switching between their points of views, the storyline flowed seamlessly and painted a complete picture of their relationship.
I cared about what happened to Olivia and Nix and shed a tear or two as they worked through incredibly difficult situations. Topics such as drugs, alcohol and rape were treated compassionately and with great empathy. The story’s conclusion left me completely satisfied and I am looking forward to more from this author.
I'm instantly drawn to both Nix and Olivia because their story and journey to adulthood appeals to my compassionate side. Olivia has endured an unhappy and abusive childhood in the hands of her alcoholic, drug-taking whore of a mother. Nix on the other hand is dealing with the consequences of his actions; he's partially to blame for the tragic death of his best friend and is struggling daily with the guilt as each new milestone in his life, brings back memories of the loss of a young life. The author is successful at showing character growth and development. As both Olivia and Nix struggle to find their identities, whilst dealing with the complexities for their mutual feelings for one another. As a reader we feel their emotions whether good or bad. I love the unexpected twist in the story line and whilst I despair at the heartbreak is causes one character, I equally applaud the responsibility and maturity of the other. And then there is Mandy, who stayed true to her roots but who in the end, couldn't cope with the results of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Overall Guarded Hearts has all the qualities I love in a story. Likable and relate-able characters, angst and romance with added heat & sizzle. I'm wondering if we'll hear more from Olivia, Nix and Mandy in the future, because for me, there is at least one unanswered question, however that didn't detract from my overall pleasure of reading this book. 4 Stars ***Arc received in exchange for an honest review.***
I read this book, Guarded Hearts, because it is completely different from my normal reads. After reading the blurb, I knew it would be a story that readers and myself would enjoy. The cover art is amazing, title totally goes with the theme and story of the book, and all around good story. This book is about two people, Olivia (she goes by Livi in the book) and Phoenix (whose nickname is Nix). They have both been through traumatic things in their lives, and are looking to overcome them at college. They aren't looking for love, but when their paths cross, Livi and Nix have trouble fighting the connection. Reading about Olivia's childhood is heartbreaking. Suffering abuse from the one person who is supposed to protect you, but thankfully she had her best friend to run to for support. Nix has his own demons that are equally heartbreaking. Survivors guilt can eat a person alive, but Nix pours all of himself into his music and DJ'ing. Both characters fall hard for one another, but feel that they don't deserve love. Or deserve one another. It takes an emotional rollercoaster to watch these two sort their feelings out, along with letting down the guards on their hearts. During the book, there were times when I was like "Come on, give an inch to see where the road takes you." But we all have to follow our minds and hearts to get the happily ever after that we desire. I don't want to say much more, because it will spoil it. Just one-click this 4 star read. You won't regret the coming of age rollercoaster of emotions it takes you on.
Two hearts broken by their past guarded from anyone that can possibly hurt them, until they found their other half. Olivia lived a life filled with abuse. Her mother blamed her for every thing bad that happened to her and let her know every day that she was to blame. Now in college she lives a guarded life hiding her heart and the truth of her past. Nix blames himself for his best friends death. His inner turmoil has broken his spirit and heart feeling unworthy he hides in plain site. When they meet it is like fireworks letting them love each other with their guards down. But happiness is still out of their grasp... An you will be shocked with the ending! i had to look back at it a couple of times. Needless to say I am eagerly awaiting the next installment with baited breath!!!! I need more of Olivia and Nix!!!
