The Midnight Moon

It was a fun, holiday romance under a moonlit sky. After exchanging passionate nights and only first names, Peyton Watts and Logan Weaver go back to their lives.
For Peyton, it’s a return to her steady, conservative social circle and the not unwelcome overtures from attorney Margot Joseph. Meanwhile, Logan’s free spirit is happy again moving with the college crowd.
So when fate throws them once more into each other’s paths, it shouldn’t mean a thing…

Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix.
Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends.
Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise...
"I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."

Gerri Hill is funny, who knew!

Over the past few months I've read a lot of Gerri Hill and she is a wonderful writer. She doesn't try to reinvent the wheel with her books, she knows why people continue to look for stories like these and churns them out with consistency and she rarely missteps.

I have to say I prefer her straight forward romances like this one but her thrillers also do the trick and I will soon delve into her paranormal stuff, Johnston & Riley.

The Midnight Moon follows hard working Peyton Watts who after finding her girlfriend in bed with her best friend is convinced to take a vacation at a resort catering mainly to lesbians, she doesn't plan on getting involved with anyone but when she arrives she meets Logan Weaver, a charming womanizer with a heart of gold. Sexy times ensue but alas the two must depart back to their real lives.... but wait. (read the book).

Logan Weaver is my favorite Gerri Hill character hands down, she is sweet, sexy, considerate and most importantly so funny. I found myself laughing out loud at times which I don‘t remember doing while reading any of Hill‘s other works. I had a little hard time believing Logan would go after a woman like Peyton, she is so reserved and as Logan tells herself many times throughout the book, "sooo not her type" but opposites attract and all that and we see Logan have an immediate impact on Peyton early on.

The conflict I felt was non-existent though, usually there is large reason why our two main characters can't get together but here one of MC‘s refusal to do so right away without using odd tactics felt a little contrived but all is well that ends well and overall the ending satisfied me.

Other than that small complaint I thoroughly enjoyed it and I recommend it to all lesfic readers.

A sweet low-angst strangers to lovers story that gets going right off as Logan pursues Peyton in a forward but sweet way and gets the holiday romance she wants. But it's later on, when the girls go back to their real lives that the emotional elements really come into play and this story really finds itself. Their reunion is played out well. I'll say nothing about the "how," as I'll let you find out for yourself :)

As always, Abby Craden's narration brings the story alive. These days I do love audio (to rest my poor, tired eyes!), but it's really important who the narrator is, and Ms. Craden is one of the *very* best).

I thought this was a nice romance. It wasn't anything exciting or anything new to the romance genre. But it was sweet and enjoyable. Gerri Hill, is a great writer so it's hard not too enjoy her books.
I enjoyed both characters but at times wanted to strangle Payton. She needed to grow a backbone and learn to say no.
If you enjoy Hill, and want to read a nice, sweet romance, look no further.

I enjoyed this story immensely. It capture me from the beginning.I fell in love with the main characters all at once. Gerri Hill has a way of creating lovable and enticing characters. It's like your friends tell you their story and how they fell in love. The book ended way to soon (which means I hope for more to come on Logan and Peyton ;)

2.5 stars. It's usually not a good sign when the predominant feeling a character inspires in you is the urge to smack her in the back of the head.

A wonderful romance by Gerri Hill. I love Peyton and Logan. I love how they met and had a bit of a vacation romance, even though both wanted more. Logan’s personality is infectious. She’s so carefree and fun. She loves skinny dipping and midnight moons. She normal goes for college girls but when she sees Peyton there is just something about her that intrigues and excites her. Peyton has a more logical and set in her ways type personality. She tries to dislike Logan at first but she can’t help but give in to Logan’s charm. She finds herself having fun and enjoying the moment with Logan. I kept waiting for them to find each other again after their vacation. I wasn’t disappointed. Added bonus appearance of Logan’s best friends Jay and Drew!

As others have said, I agree this book has the most wonderful beginning. Logan's flirtation over Peyton is really a joy to read. Fun and sexy.
Unfortunately in the second part, the story lacks something. It's again partly the same old story: why don't the two main characters comunicate between them? Just to create the cliché angst.
As almost in all love stories, this is what happens: two people meet, then fall in love, then there is the big obstacle, separation and angst, and eventually love triumphs.
Here falling in love is 10 stars, the obstacle is 3 stars.
But I'm still saying I love this book.

This is one of those books that succeeds in delivering the essentials of a good lesbian romance.

It is not an outstanding book, mind you, but it stands out from the rest just because it ticks all the "musts".

1. Credible and flawed characters
2. Slow and credible fall in love process
3. Great chemistry
4. Fun dialogues
5. Happy ending

I wanted to read something sweet and easy and that book is just that.
The plot is not very original but enjoyable and the characters are likable. I especially loved Logan, she's adorable and I was really rooting for her.
It's also a reminder that it may do us good to go outside our confort zone, take some chances and do what make us happy.

This is a hard one to rate, I liked the two characters and their interactions, but the dating other people thing always annoys me, and I really don't like it when the main characters sleep with other people. Plus Peyton dating Margot even when she didn't want to went on far too long and dragged the story down. I won't read it again, hence the two stars. If you're after a good Hill book, try Artists Dream instead.

One of Gerri's lighter novels, but still full of fun and humor, as well as her first-rate character development. A fun read that left me satisfied. Wunderbar Gerri!

This review of The Midnight Moon contains spoilers and references absolutely infuriating moments from the book.

I'm agitated even writing this review. If there is one thing to encapsulate my feeling towards this book, it's JUST SAY NO.

I've read a few Gerri Hill books. I actually tagged The Secret Pond as legendary in my shelf. Just before starting The Midnight Moon, I read Storms and gave it 5 stars. I've favored Gerri Hill's book quite a bit in my reading history but this is the first time, her book has absolutely infuriated me. I ended up disliking one of the MCs. Peyton, by the end and that's not a good outlook for this book.

The story is pretty simple really. Peyton and Logan meet at a getaway resort, Logan is infatuated with Peyton and endlessly pursues her. For all intents and purposes, Logan is stalking Peyton to get with her and literally Peyton, Logan and Emma, Logan's sister, all point that out but it is played out humorously. That is definitely an issue but I guess it's fine? Peyton is reluctant at first but enjoying Logan's company, gives in and start having a vacation fling. They spend a magical week together and at the end of the vacation, go their separate ways, secretly wanting more but afraid that they're not each other's types and would probably not work out outside of this vacation setting. They don't even share their last names to each other. This is the first half of the book and that is where the good bits of the book end.

The second half of the book is them going back to their regular lives. Months have passed, Peyton considering dating Margot, a big name in the insurance biz, to reach a better place in her profession and Logan going back to college girls. But as expected, neither of them are interested in what their old ways entailed. Logan just isn't interested in sleeping with young college girls anymore and Peyton isn't excited about her business and her image in the public, and she wants the fun she had with Logan back.

The big ongoing conflict in the book is Peyton's relationship with Margot. Peyton feels absolutely no attraction towards her but has been going on dates with her. Coincidentally, Peyton and Margot go to a party for their third date only to find Logan in the party also. They reconnect but seeing that Peyton is with Margot and Logan is with Staci, a college girl, they go their separate ways. Peyton is jealous and sleeps with Margot, because it's the third date and it's expected. Ugh. She fakes an orgasm because she feels nothing. Logan breaks it off with Staci, they don't have sex, and decides that she wants to be with Peyton.

Things were kind of looking up at this time because Peyton and Logan start to hang out again with a let's get to know each other without hanky panky rule and all the moments with them together were great. But there's constant interruption here. Margot is relentless in pursuing Peyton and does multiple surprise lunch visits at Peyton's office, many times when Logan is there too. And every single time, Logan is sad that Margot is exactly Peyton's type and obviously Peyton would get with Margot and not with Logan. And every single time, Peyton accepts Margot's lunch date requests. Every single time this happened, Peyton could have said no. She really wanted to. God, she hates how complicated her life has become but no, she accepts. Logan is always dejected but does Peyton really make it clear that there is nothing between her and Margot? No. Even when there are rumors that Peyton and Margot are getting serious, Peyton still goes, We're not really a couple. We're not really dating.

Throughout this time, Logan has come to a conclusion multiple times. Whatever she has with Peyton is all good and fun but in the end, Peyton will never choose her. It's very disappointing.

And then, there's the big banquet. This big business dinner where it was decided months ago that Peyton and Margot will go as dates. When Peyton tells Logan about the banquet (not about the Margot arrangement), Logan asks if she can accompany Peyton, but then realizes that no, Peyton has to go with Margot. It was decided months ago. There's nothing she can do about it. Again Logan is hurt. Again Margot is here for her lunch date. Again Peyton says yes to Margot. It's just so so so frustrating that Peyton just cannot say no to Margot. If Margot was actually a good person, this conflict would have been much more palatable for me but Margot is self centered, only cares about herself and her image. She is even dismissive and insulting towards Logan. Peyton knows this. She has already said she doesn't want to date Margot, get this, while on a lunch date with Margot. Margot even tells her that she will not stop pursuing Peyton. But whenever Margot comes to visit her, Peyton just doesn't say no. Just say no. Just. Say. No.

Now, there's one more thing I was not cool with at the end. There's a big blowout between Peyton and Margot at the banquet. This is supposed to be the moment where Peyton finally decides she's had enough and goes after Logan. And that does happen, but the conversation with Margot is just sooooo long. The conversation goes like this:

Peyton: I don't want this any more. I have to leave.
Margot: But you're beautiful. I can give you everything you want.
Peyton: What I want is Logan. I don't want you. I want to leave.
Margot: Logan is beneath you. You deserve better. I can give you better.
Peyton: I don't want better. I want Logan. I don't want you.
Margot: I can give you everything though. You are so beautiful.

You see the pattern here? It's a long ass conversation with the same thing over and over and over again. Just go I don't want you. I don't want this. I don't want any kind of relationship with you. I'm in love with Logan. And then leave. Why do you need to justify anything to Margot? Why have this long unnecessary conversation?

There is a HEA it the end which is cute.

What's unfortunate is there's an entirely different angst drama that could have been brought it. That being, is this just a temporary fling and a bit of fun at the side or is what's happening real? There were hints of that throughout where Peyton is worried that Logan will always go back to young women and Logan is worried that Peyton will always look for a more sophisticated and high class woman than herself. This whole Peyton being unable to say no to Margot leading to a whole bunch of hurt for Logan was just so frustrating and I didn't like it at all.

Overall, I just did not like this book. I would have given 1 star instead of 2 but I did enjoy the first half so I think a 2 star is appropriate.

I'm literally eating a cookie right now to calm my nerves.

More detailed ranking: 3.5/5

The opening third of the boom was fantastic - quickly setting the scene, introducing the characters, and some very nice, er, 'summer highlights'. Ahem.

However I found the whole Margo angst dragged in way too long and didn't ring true. I also felt like I needed to know a little more about Peyton to understand what each of the women saw in her... Sure we know Logan found her physically attractive but nothing about what she found attractive about her personality

Finally, as is so often the case with f/f romances once the angst was resolved the end came way too quickly and was a bit trite but... I'm never going to knock a HEA.

Overall though a pleasing read, made a little better than average by the strong opening to the book.

This was a book of two halves, and while I enjoyed both halves, they didn't seem connected in the book. Odd. However, this is Gerri Hill, so the book draws you in gently, with great assurance, and the first half is terrific - great relationship and character development, plus hot sex. What's not to love? The second half falters slightly, and the lead character Peyton is a little too much of a pushover. But there's a happy ending, so I'll forgive her!

I liked it. Very standard Gerri Hill novel. The characters were likable - the ones we're supposed to like - and the love scenes were pretty steamy. Not one of my favorites of hers but also not one of my least favorites. A good solid "fine."

THERE MAY BE SPOILERS!

Ok, bear with me for a minute. Imagine, if you will, a song that has stayed with you, in your heart and in your mind, since childhood. This simple song tells a very brief story about an even more brief holiday romance and for whatever reason it makes you smile, sing along and wish you knew how the story ended. Or even how it began. All of this, of course, is magnified by the fact that the song is a duet between two of the most beloved singers of all time and two of your personal favorites. Now imagine that for years you wished you were even a little bit talented enough to actually write that story. Imagine trying so many times to capture the warmth and humor and romance that short song conveys and being utterly frustrated because you just can’t do it.

Ok. Do you have all that? Good. Stay with me. Now, I want you to imagine that you pick up a book by one of your favorite authors, already knowing there’s a great chance you’re going to at the very least like the story and right there…in black and white…is that song. Well, not exactly. The song I’m talking about was about Christmas time, but everything else was there. The humor, the passion, the romance, the setting, the feeling…it was all there. And it’s every bit as wonderful.

That’s what Gerri Hill did with The Midnight Moon. She not only wrote a romance, she wrote a love song. All the way through this book, I kept hearing those words: “Strangers when we met, lovers when we leave” and “fast talkin’ lover and some slow burning wood, but even in my wildest dreams it never got this good” “don’t know how or when but I know we’ll meet again, blowing back to somewhere like some wild, restless, winter’s wind”. Again, work with me here. This book takes place mostly during the summer and early fall. But, it resonated with me just like that song does.

What I love so much about Gerri’s books, particularly the romances, is that she doesn’t try to reinvent romance. She just writes it. Even if you can predict the way the story will go or the behavior of a certain character, Gerri will tell you their story if you let her. Is it always surprising? No. Is it always the same? No. But it is always, ALWAYS a pleasant journey.

It just so happens that this book was a particularly enjoyable journey for me. Everything about this story and these characters clicked. The chemistry between Peyton and Logan is off the charts. In fact, I haven’t seen magnetism this strong since Drew and Jay (who, by the way, make an few appearances in this book). It’s really one of those, “She annoys me but, damn she’s cute about it” kind of stories. And it’s funny and sweet and very spicy. Gerri is very, very good at writing the kind of sexy bits I like to read. She’s never overly graphic, doesn’t use icky words (you know the words that make you cringe whether you read them or hear them), and every scene has a purpose for the characters. It’s never just thrown in there just because.

Now, I’ll stop rambling and get to the point, The Midnight Moon will make you smile, laugh, sweat a little bit, sigh sweetly, sigh sadly, growl in frustration and might make you a little misty eyed. Just like that song does to me. I don’t know about you, but that’s my kind of book.

Peyton Watts goes on a holiday to help her move on from a bad break-up. She meets Logan Weaver and there they have a fun romance. Logan isn't her type, as she keeps telling to herself. Peyton has her life all worked out, or so she thought. But kisses under the Midnight Moon and the nights they spent together turned her world upside down. Peyton and Logan only exchanged first names and didn't share where they live, thinking their romance only lasted until they both went home. It is only by off chance that they meet up again. Will they pick up their romance where they left from? Can Peyton follow her heart?

Gerri Hill writes good romance stories. I enjoyed this book, however, I got annoyed with Peyton at times. That's why I gave a three star rating and not a four! Before she saw Logan again, she begun dating Margot Joseph, who is a highly successful lawyer, who is exactly her 'type'. However, it was clear to Peyton that Margot doesn't turn her world like Logan does. Yet, she went continued to date Margot... Will Peyton see sense or doesn't she?

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. Peyton Watts is a CPA and takes a much needed vacation at a Texas coastal resort. While there she meets Logan Weaver who is fun and playful. The two hit it off and have some fun outings and a holiday romance. They leave without making future plans. When they meet again in their hometown sparks are still there. But Peyton has just started dating a successful attorney so things are rocky.

I like Hill's romances (more than her mysteries) and this had a great set up. It slowed down for me waiting for Peyton to make up her mind on what she wanted. I am still enjoying making my way through a lot of Hill's backlog of books.

This was a nice story, had a cool moon, and is what I wish my vacations were like. Peyton was a little wish-washy and I started to get annoyed with her at the end. I listened to the audio book and the woman who narrates (She also did Hunter's Way) is really intense and does this weird thing where she makes her masculine leads have a super raspy voice which I didn't mind too much in Hunter's Way, but it kept throwing me off in this one. Maybe opt for the print edition.

This is probably my least favorite Gerri Hill. I was looking for a light and sweet read, and what better than a Gerri Hill read by Abby Craden?
The first part was great and I liked it very much. The sex was also great and up to then it was a fun read.
But then... I thought that Peyton was just spineless and whole story reminded me totally of another Gerri Hill (The Killing Room) with almost exactly the same plot and characters, just a different setting (minus the murder plot).

I was a bit annoyed at the wishy washiness of Peyton when is came to telling the ambulance chaser that she was not interested. I have noticed that sometimes the characters in Ms Hill's books seem to loose their confidence a bit to much. A confident character suddenly has doubts their overtake them way too much and just does not seem to fit in with their overall personality. All in all a decent story.

This book just did not hold my interest, but I kept going because it's Gerri Hill. The first half was much stronger for me, confident Logan pursuing buttoned up Payton. The second half was a disappointment that not even the narration of Abby Craden could save for me. It was really uncomfortable for me to read of Payton going on several dates with the awful Margot, but then sleeping with her when she had no desire to. Gerri Hill is a talented author but this is not one of her better books.

This is my third Gerri Hill book. She is becoming one of my favorite authors. The story is a nice romance, between two people that didn’t think they belonged together. It is nicely wriiten, nicely paced, I liked both main characters. Sometimes when you meet the love of your life, it clear at the time. This is just that kind of story. Great story.

The Midnight Moon 🌑❤️

Seriously cannot get enough of Gerri Hill books.

This was another great romance. I love Logan - her personality is so easy-going and fun. Peyton is a great character, as well, in contrast. But I think that's what makes their attraction and chemistry more 🎆💥🔥.

Also, an added bonus - we get to catch up with Drew and Jay from The Rainbow Cedar.🥰
