I got this free on Kindle, and was pleasantly surprised to see that the book takes place in Columbus., ,y hometown. Who doesn't like the idea of a serial killer in a Cowttown hotel? The only problem is that it quickly became apparent that the story could take place anywhere. While I'm fine with poetic licence, I expect some local color; some reference to real things and places. Columbus just seems thrown in. The only local reference is Vets Memorial and that in passing. Youoo'd think High Street didn't exist. And what with The University of Ohio? There is no such thing. It's either Ohio State (Columbus) or Ohio University (Athens)

I want to assure readers that there are no scantily clad streetwalkers hanging out downtown. Not that we don't have pros, but the ones who "work" downtown work high end outcall and you seldom see them.(You might try NW Columbus for discount services. The Red Carpet Inn was recently shut down by the cops) We do, however, have a variety of droolers, delusionals, truants, Statehouse aides, and lawyers oon the street. Lots of lawyers. Pot dealers don't stand in front hotels either. Nor to drug lords knock off trops of cops.

Finaly, the characters don't talk like people in Columbus. We are not a town full of uptight, tight-ass judgmental anti-sex nuts. We have one of the largest gay populations in the country. And why would the onsite-owner be described as "over-worrying" her situation? Wouldn't anybody be more than passingly concerned if 13 guests were murdered in their hotel over a couple weeks time?

Anyway, I do like the idea of a serial killer running amok at a downtown hotel. The book reads like a first draft where the author was just getting the story out. I'd love to see a well-developed versoins, not a draft. I looked over some other work by James Kipling and it seems much higher quality than Metro Star, so I''m really stumped.

This is a classic 'Who done it?' murder mystery in the Agatha Christie mold.

That said unlike her novels which tend to focus on sophisticated highbrow characters, staying in 5 star places, The Metro Star Hotel featured in Metro Star Murders ain't no Ritz.

But Kipling like the great Christie manages to pull off a well paced suspenseful yarn with quirky characters and one twist and turn after another in the plot.

If you're into conspiracy thrillers then you'll like this book.

This should be a crime fiction best seller. It's that well written.I read it on my Kindle and couldn't put it down.

Think Murder on the Orient Express meets Psycho.

Not written well at all. The characters are extremely flat and the pace is slow.

Wish I could give it less than one star. The book was free, but that was too much for it!

Fascinating fiction.

This novel was somewhat strange but very appealing. When the murderer has been arrested and tried, the plot continues to unfold another layer like an onion. It takes the time to report on the future of many of the people who were central to the plot. Certainly different and thoroughly enjoyable.

Got this book free. I always try to finish any book I start, and since it was short, I did with this one as well... I thought the premise was good, but it was so poorly written that I started skipping whole paragraphs just to finish the book.

You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA

Things have been normal at the Metro Star, a top of the line hotel in a declining area of Columbus Ohio. There are few draws in the downtown area, the only professional team in town is the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL. The neighborhood behind the hotel has become the home to drug dealers and prostitutes. The hotel has been turning a blind eye to the “Lady” visitors that some hotel clients invite to their rooms. But since the hotel makes good profits from the in-room porno movies, to prevent clients from having ‘company’ would be hypocritical.

One morning security is called to a room by housekeeping. They can’t get in because the inside bolt has been set. When the door is forced open, the client is found dead in his bed but it’s hard to tell what killed him. He appears to have been strangled. Another client is found in the same way a few days later. So this appears to be a “locked room” mystery.

But that’s not how Kipling treats this story. The last part of the novel is a telling of what happened to the people from the Hotel and Hotel itself after the murderer had been caught. This part seems like a class report where people’s actions are listed for all to see but it’s boring.

Unfortunately, what could have been an interesting idea is just wasted in a story that doesn’t hold your interest. The characters are all like billboards and serve little purpose except to hang the story. Poor effort.

Overall the story was fine but lacking in the excitement and thrills area. With several grammatical errors which I can overlook considering the book was free from Amazon. Seems a good attempt for a novice writer and glad that the murders were not gruesome. As a matter of fact the novel contained very little description of the murders and deaths. The topic of illegal immigrants working in the States for less than what legal workers get paid was mentioned and I agree with the author that most jobs despised and not wanted by citizens get done by immigrants usually with outstanding results as these people are eager to come and work in America doing any kind of job that will enable them to earn a little money to send the family back home. The killer's identity surprised me. Only took me two days to finish the book.

This was an interesting mystery; it definitely had a whole bunch of available "suspects" that kept you on your toes to try and remember who was who and there were quite a few typos as well- granted t hey were real words for the most part that most spell checkers would have missed but still, a little annoying. I have to say, for the most part, I found the majority of the suspects with personalities that you wouldn't care for but find in every day life, unfortunately, quite a lot. When the killer was finally found, I don't know, it felt kind of anti-climactic to me; there wasn't a real urgency about it or a real surprise for that matter because basically the majority of suspects were built up as solid "possibles". All in all this was an "ok" mystery.

Good story...bad bad writing. This story read like the book of someone trying too hard to write a book. It just didn't have a readable flow. Very stilted sentence structure, and too much narrative. I think it would have been better had there been more dialogue between characters instead of having so much explained through the choppy voice of the narrator. It almost felt as though the author was trying to be a character in the book. Anyhow, it really probably only deserves one star...but writing isn't easy, so one star for the story and one star just for effort. Definitely wouldn't rush out to read more by this author, however.

This was a free download and even that was too much to pay. The characters did not seem to like each other, so why should the reader care about them. The writing is overly simplistic. At times you wondered if this was about solving a murder mystery or was it really about back-stabbing coworkers. But in the end, you just don't care.

I try never starting a book without reading through to the end. Sometimes a story just takes a while to get interesting. This is one book I wish I had never started much less finished. The story went off in too many directions, I didn't like or connect with any of the characters, and by the time the crimes were solved I could have cared less!

Interesting, lots of side trips but I didn't guess who it was by the halfway point - always a plus. No language, graphic sex, some gore. Recommended for when you want a longer read. TTS-enabled eBook. ©2014

Disappointing.

I had great hopes for this book. It started out very good and then about halfway through the pace slowed down way too much and I lost one.
