Monkey and Elephant Get Better: Candlewick Sparks

Rate this book
When two friends who are not exactly alike come down with colds, figuring out what will make each other feel better can be a surprising endeavor!

Monkey and Elephant are very good friends who have a lot in common. They both like morning time. They both like shiny rocks. And they both like to hear their own voices: "TAH. TAH. TAH." But Monkey is Monkey and Elephant is Elephant. They are not exactly the same. So when Elephant starts to sneeze — achoo! — Monkey has her own ideas of what will make him feel better. And when Monkey gets the sniffles, Elephant has his own ideas of what will make her feel better. Maybe there’s more than one way to enjoy a soft pile of hay, some fresh water, and a bit of entertainment!

When Carole Lexa Schaefer was growing up, she wanted to be both a poet and a journalist. In an unexpected way, she feels she achieved her ambition. While studying for a master's degree in early childhood education, she once put together a picture book made of photo essays. "The lyrical, every-word-counts genre captivated the poet and journalist in me," Carole Lexa Schaefer recalls--and she's been writing stories for children ever since. Her first book with Candlewick, THE COPPER TIN CUP, traces the origin of a family keepsake that's been handed down for generations. "It was inspired by my connections with my immigrant relatives through stories and songs--invisible heirlooms--to keep handing on," she says.

The longtime director of a Seattle preschool that she founded in 1980, Carole Lexa Schaefer often draws on her experience with young children when writing stories. In DOWN IN THE WOODS AT SLEEPYTIME, not one of the baby animals in the woods is ready to go to bed, until Grandma Owl finally finds a way to settle everyone down. The author says she was inspired "by all my friends at Little Friends Preschool who like to play just a little bit longer--even at sleepytime." Luckily, preschool teachers now have some help at nap time: DOWN IN THE WOODS AT SLEEPYTIME, says PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, is a book in which "author and artist make bedtime about as appealing as it gets."

With her next books, Carole Lexa Schaefer switches gears from sleepytime to partytime. FULL MOON BARNYARD DANCE is a rousing read-aloud that showcases farm animals dancing as they learn to appreciate their differences. ONE WHEEL WOBBLES, a zany counting book, follows one fun-loving family on Family Parade Day as they roll along on an ever-increasing number of wheels--Gramma on a motorcycle, Sister on a trike, and Grampa on some snazzy skates. Of ONE WHEEL WOBBLES, Carole Lexa Schaefer explains, "I wanted to create a counting book for children with which they could have a rollicking good time."

Carole Lexa Schaefer, who has a master's degree in early childhood education from the University of Washington, taught school for ten years in places as varied as Taiwan, Switzerland, and Micronesia, as well as Missouri and Washington. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, the author now lives in Seattle.

The story was basic but cute enough, and the illustrations were fun and beautifully colored.

Monkey and Elephant are best friends and like spending time together. Monkey can juggle rocks so Elephant wanted to juggle rocks. They both liked to make sounds because the liked to hear their voices. But Monkey got defensive and asked Elephant to stop copying him. Elephant was not even aware he was copying Monkey he was just playing. Monkey sneezed and then Elephant sneezed Monkey thought he was copying him again. But then he realized Elephant was really sick. Monkey decided he would take care of Elephant. But how could he take care of Elephant if he did not know what made an him feel better or how would Elephant take care of Monkey when he got sick? They do things their own special way.

This is a story will make a child aware that it is okay to be different and is even okay to have friends that like to do things different. It is a way of learning new things or just enjoying others talents. It is nice to have a caring friend, too. The illustrations depicts the emotional feelings when the characters are playing and when they are sick by capturing their expressions. Monkey and Elephant are just too cute!

I highly recommend this book.

I rated this book a 5 out of 5.

Review: The animal friends are back from an initial book by the same author titled Monkey and Elephant. Monkey and elephant continue to learn about friendship and in this book, what makes them unique. Monkey tells elephant that, “you are you and I am me” when he asks him to stop copying him because he doesn’t like it. All is fine, until elephant sneezes after monkey does, but not because he is copying. Elephant is sick. In the next chapter, monkey cheers his sick friend elephant up by juggling rocks. He stops to sneeze and realizes that he is now sick. In the third and final chapter, elephant now takes care of his friend monkey by playing his elephant trunk trumpet. Both are feeling better, and the friends decide to get better at what they like to do so monkey juggles while elephant trumpets. “And, WAH, wah, WAH, they did.” Digitally created illustrations are colorful and fun, with cartoon character communicating their emotions and feelings about the situation. This playful and engaging early reader offers reading repetition that will boost the confidence of the emerging reader.

Monkey likes morning time. So does Elephant. Monkey likes shiny rocks. So does Elephant. Monkey gets tired of Elephant copying him. When Monkey sneezes, so does Elephant. But Elephant doesn't feel good. Uh-oh. Elephant is sick. Monkey takes very good care of him. She brings him cool water and warm hay. She juggles rocks to make him feel better. It works! But then Monkey gets sick and Elephant takes very good care of her. He even plays his trumpet-trunk to make her feel better. It works!

Monkey and Elephant learn that they can do their own things but together.

A beginner chapter book about a pair of friends, a monkey and an elephant, who want to be individuals and who both end up getting sick. Luckily, the friends aren't sick at the same time so they can both take care of one another as only they know how to do.

Digital illustrations are vibrant and expressive. These two friends are the definition of lovable. I'd recommend this for newly independent readers who are confident in their abilities.

I found the two threads of this story a little disparate and not as well integrated as I'd like, but the illustrations are much more modern than a lot of early readers. I think older beginning readers will be able to relate to the plot, even if it is a bit disjointed. Newer readers may have trouble because of what goes unsaid in the dialog and lack of exposition.

Elephant and Monkey are friends who do everything the same way. Then one day Elephant sneezes. Monkey takes care of him while he is sick. Then Monkey sneezes and Elephant has to take care care of him while he is sick. Elephant and Monkey take care of each other in their own ways. They learn that their differences make them good friends too.

Read for Librarian Book Group
Pretty much what the title says, though Monkey and Elephant have very different ways of fighting off a cold. Good three-chapter beginning reader. The librarians really liked the clarity of the font.

Meh, seems like a relatively solid early reader, but I not super inspired.

Each animal has a turn being sick while the other takes care of them. Ultimately, they learn that being yourself is the best thing for a friendship. :)
